If Bran tells his father, Lord Stark would bring this to him. Jaime, Cersei and their kids would all be executed if Robert believes Bran, and a child would have no reason to tell such a lie.
Jaime even saves Bran from falling to his death before pushing him. Under pressure from Cersei, he knows making sure Bran can never speak is what will protect Cersei & the children

I was confused when everyone points to the bath tub scene as the one because he already spoke of his lose-lose situation, it was back when Catelyn Stark visited him in his cell and he started explaining his contradictory Kingsguard vows then she scolded him anyways. That was when I was certain he has been misrepresented. The first inkling I had that Jaimes reputation is unfair was back in season 1 when Ned Stark gave him shit for killing Aerys, and then pretty much in the same breath gave him shit for not doing anything when Neds dad & brother were killed. Jaime couldn't win and it's been there the whole time, everyone just gets too distracted by his pompous attitude to really listen to what he had to say until the bath tub scene. Great character

"And to be honest, Jaime doesn't help with his attitude either."
You're definitely right about that, but I think that's part of what makes him such an interesting character. We never get to see what Jaime was like as a teenager before killing the Mad King, but from the way he's talked about back then, I believe he was much more optimistic, bright eyed and eager to be a good knight. But he's grown into a jaded a-hole because of what he's been through. Serving the Mad King would have been a shocking reminder that reality is much more cruel than his naive ideas of what being a knight meant. And then he did something truly brave and heroic, killing the King to save hundreds of thousands of innocent lives, and he was condemned and mocked for it. It wasn't just Ned Stark who judged him, it was the entire 7 Kingdoms.
"Kingslayer, Man without Honour, you all despise me". Jaime became the sarcastic prick because of what happened. The one moment of true heroism in his life is the sane thing that lead to him being hated and mocked. It's all a cruel joke to Jaime, he wants to be respected, but it feels futile to him. And so he becomes incredibly jaded.
And that's why his dynamic with Brienne is so compelling. He sees his younger self in her, that naive boy who thought he could be a true, heroic knight. Which is why at first, he mocks her relentlessly. Because he's subconsciously trying to make her jaded to reality like he is. But Brienne surprises Jaime, he starts to realize that she has been mocked and laughed at her entire life. But unlike him, she is steadfast in her commitment to being an honorable knight, she doesn't let other people's opinions sway that. With that, and her competency in battle, Jaime starts to respect her.
And their dynamic is so strong because they both help each other grow as people. Brienne makes Jaime realize that he can be good inspite of what people think of him. And Brienne, who sees the world in very black and white terms, learns that the world can be a lot more Grey than she had imagined. That "bad people" aren't inheritantly bad.

  • @brendanoconnor1550
    @brendanoconnor1550 2 года назад +43

Jamie was the youngest person made a Knight of the Kingsguard. It’s one of the greatest honors a Knight can rise up to, usually a sign of a skilled warrior with unprecedented honor, and undying loyalty to the king. Aerys chose Jamie, but not for those reasons. He hated and envied Tywin, his old friend and Hand of the King, and chose his eldest son to be his guard to rob him of the heir he wanted to inherit his house. Tywin stepped down as Hand and went back to Casterly Rock soon after, and Jamie was left to follow the commands of a madman, and told by his other sworn brothers that “you swore a vow to guard the King, not to judge him.”
If Ned Stark, Jon Arryn, or anyone else on Robert’s side had killed Aerys they would’ve been considered a hero, Jamie is despised for it because he swore an oath. I even think Ned might’ve respected him a little if he died defending Aerys, the man who murdered his father and brother, because it would be the “honorable” thing to do, and that thought makes my head spin.

This way they're stripped from their individuality entirely. AND THAT is how Greyworm is a blessed name in a way none of his previous names was.

Jaime's reveal in this scene was paradigm-shifting for so many reasons. It makes so much sense that he has that attitude now; he's despised and considered completely without honor, because of what _he_ considers to be his most honorable act. He's actually filled with self-loathing for the most part ("the things I do for love"), and the one thing he built his self-esteem around (his skills) have now been taken away. He's quite lost, and has been for a long time.
Especially when you consider that, at least in the books, Jaime was, at most, 17 when he earned the name, "Kingslayer." And the show barely touches the surface of all the layers, history, and politics behind why Jaime became a kingsguard at the age of 15 in the first place, his hurt when he found out that what he thought was an honor given as a reward for his skill was actually just a power move by Aerys against Tywin... which I don't think factored into his decisions that day, but it did factor into how his personality was shaped.

Jaime uses his cockiness and general air of superiority to mask the fact that he's completely broken inside. The one thing he wanted above all else was to be an honourable knight. Instead he's known throughout the kingdoms as THE dishonourable knight for his most honourable act, killing the Mad King before his madness brought down all of King's Landing. His bitterness towards Lord Eddard Stark arose from the same place. Ned was known throughout the kingdoms as THE man of honour. Even when he fathered a bastard son, he somehow did it with honour. He was dripping with it. Jaime could have done with a drop of honour, yet he had none. We see his psychological pain exposed in this episode. A man without honour.

I love the bathtub scene, not because it shows Jaime as a good guy, but because it shows Jaime as human. He was essentially a child progeny with the sword, and was played as a political pawn between the Mad King and his father. Eventually he faced the ultimate conflict, between upholding his vows to serve the King and killing his own father. He chose both family and perceived good over honor. Arguably the wrong choice in the eyes of Ned Stark, but not an unreasonable choice.
None of this changes the fact that he pushes Bran out a window. He is still a prideful man, and he still has a weakness for his sister who is objectively evil. But remember his quote from a few episodes ago “we cannot choose who we love.” I believe that he genuinely loves Cersei for reasons that I cannot understand. But Bran surviving would risk Cersei’s life, as brother-sister incest is punishable by death.

Children being used by their parents in arranged marriages was the norm up until the early 20th Century for most of the Western World. Marriage based on romance and love wasn't considered viable and was left to romance novels. Marriage was about socioeconomic or political gain/alliance. Emotion had little to do with marriage. That's what lovers were for.

It's hard to understand until this point what that label did to Jaime's life. He was forced on the kingsguard at 15. It was his entire life. And all of its glory and honor was ripped away from him while barely an adult at that point, for saving all the people in the city. How could he function if he let people know how much their disrespect hurts? That moment is why Jaime is who he is. It has defined him his entire adult life.

The Jaime/Brienne scene is one of my personal favorites from the series, even in the books. George R. R. Martin and Nickolai Coster-Waldau do such masterful jobs of portraying Jaime as a callous, dishonorable man who killed the man he was oathsworn to protect, impervious to the "Kingslayer" insults that everyone is constantly throwing at him to disparage his honor, that we have no problem believing it. Then in this scene we hear what actually happened from Jaime himself. He alone saved everyone in King's Landing from the Mad King and his pyromancers, and we realize all at once that his hard exterior is an act: "Jaime... My name is Jaime." He's neither callous nor dishonorable, and he's deeply pained by the reputation he now has as the Kingslayer.

One thing I thought was interesting was Shireen‘s (Stanis’ daughter) blonde hair. Remember Ned reading the great book of houses determined Joffrey and his siblings were all Jamie’s based on their blonde hair. The great book of houses reflected that all Baratheons were black of hair. But here you have Stanis and his wife, both black of hair, produced a blonde child - Shireen. Now she’s not a Lannister platinum blonde, but she is blonde. So if two black haired Baratheon/wife can produce a dirty blonde daughter why couldn’t a black hair Robert Baratheon and a blonde hair Cersei produce blonde her children? I think Game of Thrones realized they made a mistake as Shireen’s blonde hair gets darker as the episodes go along.

I really loved getting to hear Jaimie's story regarding the mad king because that was something we've been waiting for for a long time... the reason why he killed him. The scenes with Brienne were amazing, as usual. I love their weird chemistry. lol.
ARYA AND GENDRY. OMG that scene was so sad. I loved when she said he could be her family. The way she delivered that line was just so good. And then him saying she'd be his lady... I love them.
Tyrion having to marry Sansa... whatttttt. So creepy and weird. But at least he would be a kind husband to her and protect her and not take advantage of her or treat her badly. I have a feeling thats the plan thats going to go through. Cersei having to marry Loras.. serves her right for laughing at Tyrion.
I enjoyed this episode for Robb but I am worried for him. I dont think he made the right decision losing all those men. He should have listened to his mother and wife. With that said, he could have punished the guy in another way, like cutting off his limb or something lol. And now wanting to contact the man he betrayed? No. I dont see this going well.
Dany is so sweet. I loved how she treated one of the soldiers and told him to pick a new name.
One thing I really love about this show is that it remembers its history and brings things full circle and doesnt drop storylines.

The way he uses Tyrion and Cersei makes you wonder how Jamie gets away with being unmarried and providing no Lannister heirs

@@eurongreyjoy1008 yes I know that's a Kingsguard rule of course, not actually a bozo thanks very much, but why did Tywin allow Jamie to take that choice in the first place is what I wonder as marrying him off to some house that would gain power seems more like his method. Maybe there was some gain to being Kingsguard that outweighed that? Anyone who's read the books got any insight?

@@xoxoxANGExoxox at the time Tywin was the hand of the King and he actually was responsible for everything good happening on the realm. everyone was talking about how Tywin was the real ruler and not the actual King. bcs of that the Mad King put Jaime in the Kingsguard to piss Tywin and Jaime accepted the place despite Tywin telling him not to bcs he wanted to be on the court with Cersei. Tywin after that resigned from hand and returned to Casterly Rock with Cersei. Tywin didnt want Jaime to join the Kingsguard but he couldnt rly do anything about it. He had no power over the King

To be honest, Jaime never intended to even try to explain anything. Ned found him sitting on the throne with arrogance, the corpse at his side. Ned never gave him an opportunity but neither did Jaime. Also he was alone with the king, the rest of the kingsguard died or were already prisoners of the rebels. He could've imprison him, knock him out, lock him in his chambers etc etc. Its an amazing scene but Jaime is still full of bullshit.

I said Ned never gave him a chance, but Jaime also never intended to explain himself to him because he's an arrogant asshole. He was, is and will be a fucking prick and his redemption is overrated as hell.

It sucks that Jaime chose pride and foolishness over being honest in a way that ultimately ended up hurting him. His whole "Ned Stark has no right to judge what he doesn't understand" thing is just about the stupidest thing I've ever heard.
Imagine if you had to kill someone in self defense, but say nothing to the cops who come to the scene. You'll be arrested for murder, not because cops are judges, but because they have to work with the information they have, and you didn't say anything when they got there. If you also choose not to tell your story at trial, you'll probably be found guilty. You can't then say, "you're just gonna find me guilty on the evidence alone? Without considering my side of the story that only I know? That's not fair!"
All anyone can do is the best they can with the information they have at the time. Jaime saw Ned operating without a critical piece of information and chose not to resolve the misunderstanding, resulting in Jaime's honor being questioned everywhere he went for decades. He played himself.
