  • Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky, Mick & Tich were a British pop/rock group of the 1960s. Two of their single releases sold in excess of one million copies each, and they reached number one in the UK Singles Chart with the second of them, "The Legend of Xanadu".
Five friends from Wiltshire, David John Harman (Dave Dee), Trevor Leonard Ward-Davies (Dozy), John Dymond (Beaky), Michael Wilson (Mick) and Ian Frederick Stephen Amey (Tich), formed a group in 1961, originally called Dave Dee and the Bostons. They soon gave up their jobs (e.g. Dave Dee was a policeman) to make their living from music. Apart from performing in the UK, they also occasionally played in Hamburg (Star-Club, Top Ten Club) and in Cologne (Storyville). Ward-Davies had acquired his nickname when he unwrapped a chocolate bar before absent-mindedly discarding the bar and attempting to eat the wrapper.

Who’s viewing this in Oct 2021? My appreciation for this upload is enormous, thank you soooo much!! I was born in the 60’s and have fond memories of listening to these songs on my siblings 45’s. With all the 24/7 covid crap going on in the world today I wouldn’t mind getting into a time capsule and head back there. I love the music and cars of that era, just phenomenal.

Great song by a great and original band. No-one else sounded like them. So many good songs and they wrote them all.

They were indeed a great band but all of their hits were written by the producers Ken Howard and Alan Blaikley. The band themselves wrote a few of their b-sides and album tracks.

I watched this on Beat Club when I was in Germany in 1968. Today I have it downloaded along with many other Beat Club performances you never saw in the US. Anybody who was never in Germany and saw Beat Club doesn't know what they've missed.
Forgot to mention that I also have the complete Beat Club series on DVD.

I agree with you. I first saw and heard all these great groups through the Beat Club. Because at that time there was no better source of information in Germany than AFN or the Beat Club from Bremen. Only a few who were able to visit the Star Club in Hamburg.

Tich ain't gone yet, I'm sure!
Dave Dee (David Harman) passed away in 2009 and Dozy (Trevor Ward-Davies) passed away in 2015. I may be wrong (I hope I'm not!), but I'm sure Beaky, Mick and Tich are still with us.
I grew up listening to this band from the age of six and fell in love with their music. Of course, The Legend of Xanadu is the most memorable.
I can't sign off without mentioning that Dave Dee (when he was a policeman) was at the scene of Eddie Cochran's car accident. Gene Vincent was also in the taxi as well as Eddie Cochran's girlfriend whom Eddie Cochran covered to protect from the crash, thus dying in the accident himself.
I just thought I'd share that with you.
P.S. A thought has just crossed my mind. You may have been unwittingly guilty of thinking that Trevor Ward-Davies - because of his size - was Tich. He was called Dozy, all on account of a chocolate bar, where he threw away the bar and started eating the wrapper, apparently. If so, I made the same mistake when I was young.

All the best mate, from a poor UK citizen who has seen his country - in its hubris - blow the wonderful EU experience to smithereens.
P.S. But I'm glad you liked Dave Dee, Dozy, Mick & Tich.
I grew up listening to them. They were a quality band.
P.P.S. Smithereens comes from the Irish word smidirín (smiddereen), meaning small piece. Hence "blown to pieces"
