Honestly as a Jeep person I never see big trucks off road. They tend to be too big and too heavy. I mean I'm watching this video and obstacles that have to be taken SO SLOW would be a joke in a Jeep. Wranglers are king off road and the new Gladiator will be the first truck I really see off road. I off road in New Mexico, Colorado, Arizona, and Utah and that's been my experience. I do like the Rebel and I would probably get one if I needed a truck. Then again, I'd most likely get a Jeep since they have a truck now.
I am super stoked to have seen this video. I've been going back and forth over a rebel and power wagon and one of my big questions was the fuel economy and towing capacity of the new power wagon. I've also been trying to determine if opting for a 2019 / 2018 it's worth it and to me I think I'm much more likely to go with the new power wagon. Thanks for the great comparison and review. Well done!
I am in the same situation as you having the same questions. The tradesman power wagon option best buy for me for off road use especially the beefed up tires.plus with the power wagon package off road use the same as the much more expensive loaded power wagon at a MUCH LOWER PRICE !
Bart Macmanus I tow and haul with mine. Zero problemo. But I did add Airlift bags in Daystar cradles with an Airlift compressor. With that Towing is a breeze and no sacrifice on off road capabilities. 👍
My big thing with the power wagon towing numbers is three-part... 1. How much more confidence can you have towing the maximum weight with each? Being a heavy duty, the power wagon must stop better and sway less (at least hypothetically). 2. Like a 2.5 ton military truck (5 tons on road and 2.5 off road) how is the off road handling with a full payload/trailer? With a lot of off road trailers coming to market it has to be said that they can make a huge impact. 3. Has anyone looked up what 10000lbs looks like on a trailer? I know it's not the 30000lbs a 3500 diesel can tow but most of your tandem axle campers, livestock, and car trailers (most twin axle, bumper-hitch trailers with single wheels) will be pulled by the power wagon. I know there's an argument with both but the bed length and confidence of the power wagon due to being over-built for its ratings I still see a lot of utility. It's a 3/4 ton truck in all aspects but it can take that 3/4 tons with it to moab or just about any job site or campground. It does keep stuff In the bed while still towing a trailer too whereas the jeep may have a single axle overland trailer you sleep next to but cant haul much more in a Rubicon. The rebel seems more like a raptor fighter for going fast offroad or on really terrible roads that rallies would happen on (where independent front suspension really shines).
I have the 2015 Power Wagon. I've owned Fords and Chevs and they treated me well. I love my Power Wagon. I don't offroad as much anymore but it sure is nice buying the truck with all the goodies already installed. The lockers have come in handy twice in the mud and twice in snow. And it pulls a trailer with little effort. I only have 50 thousand miles on it so I plan to keep it for awhile. The only downside is the cost. It would be nice to see a diesel version though.
@@davidmitchell5638 yup i have a 14 1500 outdoorsman with the 8 speed and i can get down to 8L per 100 KM on the highway, thats what like 28 mpg. i sit around 15L per 100 normally with wind and hills
I got 16.5 MPG off my 2018 Power Wagon on it's last road trip from TX to CA and back to TX. I run mine on slightly taller tires (35" MTs). I like the 2019s but that abominable rotary shifter I will always question why? The column shifter is way better and they could've easily hooked that new transmission with the HEMI but NO they went with rotary.
Those are some great numbers, after leveling and putting 35's on my 18 I average around 13 MPG. I only run ethanol free 91 as well. I just test drove a 19 for a day and was getting noticeably better fuel economy, it towed my dump trailer so much better as well. The 6 speed in the PW's has horrible ratios for the gas engine in my opinion. My 19 should be here mid May, can't wait to put her to work.
@@WilliamStewart1 I think their just fine on mine, I also have a calibrator for my 18 so that kind off takes care of it. I like the 19 but I just can never get past the stupid knob shifter.
@@1234567890ZETA Yeah it was driving me nuts everytime I got in it and kept reaching for the handle ha ha. Small price to pay for the transmission though, literally night and day. Pulls way better, accelerates way better, gets 1.5 MPG more during my test, and the crawl ratio when I put it in 4 LO was insane.
@@WilliamStewart1 IDK man, I love the Power Wagon in general well its a love hate thing. I love it just because of it's burliness and it has that commanding presence, the 6.4 HEMI is by far the best engine I've driven given I've spent time testing every truck I can get my hands on before I settled with a 3/4-ton pickup. I hate it that Ram didn't put a nice exhaust note for this particular model but well marketing it as such it's still a work truck after all the cool 4x4 hardware it packs. I thought of getting a 2019 TBH but it's just not worth trading a vehicle that basically has the same shape and only got fancier items, its a truck not a luxury car and I'd be goddamned the day it goes away with manual transfer case. I'm keeping my 2018 for sure since it's the last Ram HD to feature the traditional "big rig" styling. It actually would have been nice if Ram trucks started going with 8-speed when they did the 2014 update, oh I also hate that they went away with 4.56 ratio and went to 4.10s another thing that I want to upgrade down the road.
Fun video guys! My 18 Power Wagon has been my most favorite truck I’ve ever owned. I daily drive it, travel in it, tow with it and haul with it. It’s a beast and does everything well. Love the newest PW but I’m waiting for the PW in the next generation build. Interestingly my “old” 18 Power Wagon gets identical hwy MPG. But I do run 89 octane with non-ethanol gas. I’m sure that is why. I’d like to see how the 6.4 with 8spd does with 89 non ethanol. 👍 Just to add, towing and hauling is a non issue with mine. Zero problemo. But I did add Airlift bags in Daystar cradles with an Airlift compressor. With that Towing is a breeze and no sacrifice on off road capabilities. I have also been smart about my mods. I don’t add unnecessary weight and I’ve actually saved around 150lbs with an AFE exhaust and going with a synthetic cable. That just adds back in to my payload capacity. 👍
It is a shame but I see why. The weight and size of the Cummins limits axle travel and flexibility due to spring rates and engine size, and the intercooler would force the relocation/removal of the winch. I think ram should make a diesel offroad package that is Similar to the power wagon but maybe toned down on offroad suspension to keep towing and payload (Ford is doing that with the tremor package). It would still be hugely capable but maybe call it the "work wagon" and make it a package for diesel 2500 and 3500 trucks. (Same tires, lift, skid plates, and lockers but give higher towing and payload) unfortunately their would have to be compromises made
The Cummins that does come in a 2500 4wd. Needs to have 4.10 gears for 35" tires, 4.56 gears for 37's. The stock 3.42 ratio will pull great. But the throttle sensitivity is poor at low speed. 3.73 rato would be okay with 33" tires. If the transfer case had a 4.1 low range. Rock crawling could work with the taller 3.42 gears. My wife has a 2018 Ram 2500 Crewcab Tradesman 4wd 6.7L Cummins 3.42 ratio. The payload is 2500 lbs, tow rating of 17,000 lbs. The Cummins is a beast. I have a modified 2016 Ram Quadcab Tradesman 4wd 3.0 Ecodiesel 3.92 ratio. It has a 4" lift, and is nicer to go Overlanding in. A Power Wagon with the Ecodiesel would surprise people. But the 4.1 low range from the Jeep Rubicon would be highly desireable. The weak link of my 1500 is the frony control arms. I have replaced the uppers, with Ready Lift pieces. And will soon replace the lowers with Mevotech TTX units. Use Bilstein 5100 shocks set at the max on the front.
@@mpsangha that's if they use the standard bumper. AEV makes a larger bumper that is able to fit a winch on a Cummins-powered Ram. I'm really interested to see what AEV has in store for the 2019 Ram HDs...
Both are fantastic trucks for off-roading and towing but for heavy off-road like rocks a lot of twisting involving big gaps and big dips I’d choose the power wagon only because of the bumper clearance of course both solid front axles and both locking rear and front diffs plus discounted sway bar but the rebel is still a beast Thoe at off-road
@@wildandliving I'm not sure this is true. Accident #1, in my Tundra 4x4, hit at +50 mph from behind at full stop (red light). Totaled the Nissan Rogue that hit me. Had to replace my rear bumper and tailgate and associated lights/etc. Accident #2, in my Ram 2500 4x4, complete side hit at +45mph by a Tacoma. Massive front end damage to Taco, Had to replace my hood, left the front wheel, strut, left fender and drivers door/window/mechanicals. No damage to either driver. Great to see the 8 speed helping the 6.4l mpg. Could you please try a regular 4x4 2500 6.4 with less aggressive tires to see how much more mpg it could pick up for us work truck folks
Plus lose the 2" lift and 500lbs of PW equipment a volume crew 4x4 will be a major improvement in performance and economy. This is exactly what the 6.4 needed.
Another great video. Both the Rebel and the Power Wagon are excellent off road vehicles, but the Power Wagon being a 3/4 ton with solid Dana axles, two lockers, sway bar disconnect and the winch clinches it for me as a solid purchase.
2019 Ram 1500 Bighorn North Edition ,I discovered that around town or combined driving I get 16.5 mpg no matter what gas I use. On road trips though,my MPG goes up to 21mpg if I stick to 89 Octane . Running the stock 3:21 gears.
i love the power wagon, basically my favorite truck. but a single rear weel ram 3500 with off road pacage ( under carriage protection and tunned up suspension) is a better truck in payload and towing numbers pluss the cummins diesel option and being the only heavy duty truck with manual transmission ( the other ones are tacoma, navarra and the new jeep gladiator ) that one is a basic and reliable configuration
A) I’d like to see a more direct comparison of the two, for example on the same trail, not just an older video of the Rebel on a different trail. B) Can you please do a comparison of the old Rebel vs the new Rebel? Is it worth the upgrade? Thanks for your awesome, hard work!
I would take the Rebel. Off road for both is great and granted the Power Wagon rocks! But i have a family to haul around and the Rebel shines here. Daily working or hauling plywood and 18 gauge steel would work for both trucks. Thanks for the video.
I wanted to “Limited”, until my wife got me the “Rebel”. She said the Limited is too girly with all the chrome. I’m glad she got me the Rebel, I’m not disappointed. 😊 ❤️
After living with and offroading a lifted 2019 RAM 1500 now for a few months, I believe they really need a front solid axle version of the 1500. I'd snatch that up in a second. I haven't run into a trail too skinny for me yet, but I've had some tight squeezes where I'm wondering if the powerwagon could have made it through.
Great video FLT! I've never owned a Ram, but these trucks are really nice and look great in and out. Yes, they come with a hefty price tag as well, but all new trucks are getting up there. Im a Ford guy, but I am impressed with what Ram is putting out. Be curious to see if Ram decides to put a Cummins in the power wagon in the future.
Remember '70s Dodge Power Wagon, like on Simon and Simon, Rick or A.J., had one. Single Cab!! Wheelbase wasn't so darn long. LA series V8, gear reduction chrysler starter!! Loved them!! Ok, done crying now. It's a fricking 5th Avenue, with a bed!! New ones!! Ok, I do love the new ones!
I greatly appreciate this review, I've been on the fence between these 2. I'll go with the diesel Rebel for better over the road MPG and occasional offroad experience. Keep the videos coming guys, you rock!!
The rebel looks to be much more daily livable compared to the power wagon which feels like has a niche role no other vehicle on the market has. That being said for a heavy duty vehicle I'd rather have something with a diesel.
Exactly, I tell everyone that looks at my truck and loves it that it's not for everyone. They don't ride that great and get horrible fuel economy, if you don't need one I don't recomend them. That being said I don't think I'll ever own anything else until I retire.
I run 93 octane and get get a big increase in gas mileage over 87 octane . It cost LESS to run the better fuel it shocked me of how much less it cost to run .
This review makes me want to go with the rebel. Yes not as hard core off roading but the real world truck use such as towing and fuel economy make the choice for me clear.
I love these reviews it's good knowledge to have when you get into a truck arguement so u dont get yourself into a corner😂 Also I'm not a dodge person but I'd take the rebel
My 2006 Chrysler Town and Country gets that gas mileage. Time for a trade-in. The Rebel is one heck of a truck! The only thing is lacks is the front locker, factory winch and the heavier axles.
I am going to put out there that the results of the drag race had more to do with the different gear ratios more than the weight and power output. The Rebel with the 3: 90 something gearing intended more for normal daily driving where the Power Wagon probably has 4:10 or 4:56 gearing that's intended more for hauling. Also as far as the ground clearance goes, the Rebel had more but how much bigger could you go with the tires, even with additional lift before stuff starts breaking? The Power Wagon with big beefy solid axles is easier to apply a lift to and will do much better with larger tires, therefore I declare the Power Wagon has better ground clearance capability.
Great video and comparison. It would be interesting to see how these trucks do with a tire size up to 35". Definitely for the PW but the Rebel would need minor suspension modes to get there.
I'd love to see this done with the Gladiator, Rebel, and Power Wagon. To see Money Vs Capability. Being a Mopar lover, those are my three trucks I'm looking at currently.
The Heavy Duty truck is the 3500. The power Wagon would do just fine with the Ecodiesel. And maybe 4.56 gears to compliment 35" tires. The solid axles will last at least 5 replacements of the Rebel front control arms.
Chris McLaughlin I never understood why they still only put 33”s on the power wagon. I’ve seen people fitting 37”s on those with just a leveling kit, so I feel like they should be able to fit 35”s from the factory.
@@williamfrancis402 I'm pretty sure it's not that. Safety requirements for 3/4 ton trucks are pretty minimal. The government considers anything over 8400lb GVWR to be a commercial vehicle. There's plenty of commercial vehicles that have a way higher COG than the Power Wagon. I believe the issue of cost that someone else brought up is the best explanation. A set of 35" 315/70-17s cost a few hundred bucks more than some 33" 285/70-17s.
In the video it is a tradesman powerwagon. Is there a difference between the Powerwagon interior over just adding the trim “powerwagon” to a tradesman?
If you want better mileage and overall performance, use the 91 octane not the 87. I've noticed in my Rebel that if I use 89 or 91 octane over the 87, mileage is better. It might be different for other people but this has been my experience using higher octane fuel. This is by no means scientific, just what I observed.
You really really need to run the mpg loop on the rebel on recommended or above octane. I'd be very curious on the results. Might be a good video too If the results are better, and you can do a comparison vs pump price.
well that explains part of your poor MPG ... I have a 2019 RAM Bighorn / North Crewcab 4x4 with non-etorque 5.7L and 3.21 gears... noticed in the MPG segment the Rebel was turning 1900-2000 at 70MPH ... mine with 3.21 spins about 1600-1700 at indicated 70mpg ... my past EcoDiesel which did have 3.92 gears did seem to take a toll on the MPG
On the MPG comparison - what was the wind speed and direction for each run? I notice large differences with the wind at my back versus in my face in my Rebel (and in my MDX for that matter).
The new Power Wagon looks great and if you're going for off-road and money doesn't really matter, the Power Wagon is the way to go... for the most part. Love the Rebel for day to day driving though.
When I bought my Power Wagon the dealer ensured me no one would bring a tape measure anywhere near me.

The 8-speed makes a world of difference behind the '19 6.4 I wouldn't touch an '18 6.4 with a stick regardless of price.
Bart Macmanus I tow and haul with mine. Zero problemo. But I did add Airlift bags in Daystar cradles with an Airlift compressor. With that Towing is a breeze and no sacrifice on off road capabilities. 👍
Excellent review, thanks guys.
I love y’all’s channel very entertaining and informing. I bought a 2020 power wagon identical to the one that y’all test drive
I don’t have a Power Wagon, but I do have a 2019 Ram 2500 Laramie Mega Cab. Let me just say, it’s AWESOME.
you guys are the best auto show in the world. You are just awesome.
Granny HD vision glasses! I always wanted one of those...
I always wanted to see this comparison. Thank you for doing this! Now I know which one I want to get.
I just got a 2021 ram rebel and I absolutely love it.
Man, I love that front camera. Both very capable.
Lmao, nobody buys Hemi V8s for good gas mileage.
Yet, they manage to get better mpg than the Ford ecoboosts haha
@@mrvwbug4423 with my driving I average 9MPG in my 1500. Spirited drive 3.6MPG! it's crazy but I love it
@@davidmitchell5638 yup i have a 14 1500 outdoorsman with the 8 speed and i can get down to 8L per 100 KM on the highway, thats what like 28 mpg. i sit around 15L per 100 normally with wind and hills
stfu, that comment really offends me soooo much.
My dad drives a 2003 Dodge ram 1500 and it gets an exact 6 miles per gallon in the city
Paulo Abesamis what’s the calibrator do and who makes it?
Fun video guys! My 18 Power Wagon has been my most favorite truck I’ve ever owned. I daily drive it, travel in it, tow with it and haul with it. It’s a beast and does everything well. Love the newest PW but I’m waiting for the PW in the next generation build. Interestingly my “old” 18 Power Wagon gets identical hwy MPG. But I do run 89 octane with non-ethanol gas. I’m sure that is why. I’d like to see how the 6.4 with 8spd does with 89 non ethanol. 👍
Just to add, towing and hauling is a non issue with mine. 👍
How do you lik the AFE Exhaust?
If only the Power Wagon came with the Cummins....
Andrew Rife : The small 3.0 oil burner would be perfect. More torque than the 6.4 and better mileage.
If only it came in a stdcab
If i remember correctly, power wagon did care on Cliff hanger 2.0... Cared a whole lot
Well in Nathan's words.... It cared a little bit. Lol
I mean it looked like diver error to me.
I have been waiting for this mpg test on the 19 2500 for a while
Great job comparing guys, been wanting to see some real life results between those two. Thumbs up to this one! I was surprised at the PW MPG.
Ram should make a 3500 Power Wagon-like truck on 37s, a Cummins, a winch and a cantilever rear suspension, and call it the FACTORY WAGON 😋
And the 6 speed manual as an option 😍
The winch won't fit with the intercooler, that's why the power wagon is gas only.
@@mpsangha that's if they use the standard bumper. AEV makes a larger bumper that is able to fit a winch on a Cummins-powered Ram. I'm really interested to see what AEV has in store for the 2019 Ram HDs...
I agree
It would be super heavy.
I bought a 2020 power wagon identical to this one. And I got it for 44,000 new. I think it was a great deal.
Where I live, the Rebel is more expensive then the Power Wagon. Id go for the Power Wagon hands down.
Powerwagon wins every time! I have a 17 tradesman powerwagon that doesn't care what's in front of it!
Yes it cares. It does terrible for a truck in a crash. Almost all the ram trucks are death traps in an accident
@@wildandliving Again, the Power Wagon doesn't care about anything, including your feelings.
WildandLiving Ever seen a real world accident? Most scenarios a HD Ram will drive off with maybe a little dent.
WildandLiving As most pickup trucks are, what even is your point? Don’t think this guy plans on crashing his truck honestly.
My point is, I feel if either of us were in cars the damage would have been much higher w/more chance for injury. Just my $.02
Great to see the 8 speed helping the 6.4l mpg. Could you please try a regular 4x4 2500 6.4 with less aggressive tires to see how much more mpg it could pick up for us work truck folks
Yes! A 4x4 crew cab short bed would be the truck I'd be after for myself if I upgrade from my 03 QCSB 4x4 2500 hemi truck
Plus lose the 2" lift and 500lbs of PW equipment a volume crew 4x4 will be a major improvement in performance and economy. This is exactly what the 6.4 needed.
Subscribed because of minimal commercials. Thank you for that.
Another great video. Both the Rebel and the Power Wagon are excellent off road vehicles, but the Power Wagon being a 3/4 ton with solid Dana axles, two lockers, sway bar disconnect and the winch clinches it for me as a solid purchase.
The axles are AAM. Ram hasn't used Dana in years except on dullys.
You guys are awesome and it makes me sad I moved to California from Colorado. I’m a huge fan of you guys!
The power is the best truck you can buy from the factory for off road! They are a awesome truck!! 👍👍
They should of made the Rebel
a mini Power Wagon
I wouldn’t mind a Power Wagon, unfortunately those are never available in the UK. Great video, you certainly give me ideas for my next vlog. Cheers
Trucker Steve why not?
Олег Науменко A model not available. Probably too big for the UK.
Trucker Steve bring it from USA by your own
Олег Науменко that would cost a fortune!
I’m bring my to Ukraine . It costs me 15k $
I'm with Nathan. Power Wagon all the way.
Exactly what iv been waiting for!! Power wagon true mpg. Thanks guys. New power wagon it is!!
6:58 The Ram Tough Bumper withstood the impact of a tumbleweed!
Power Wagon would be the first vehicle I'd buy after winning Lotto!
The MPG numbers are impressive. My 2003 Silverado doesn't come close.
Chris Baumann I sure do. I’m currently looking at my 76
I greatly appreciate this review, I've been on the fence between these 2.
Love the comparison video. Would love a Power Wagon but for me I "settled" for a quad cab Rebel. Love it so far
Power Wagon just dont care...
I want to see TFL race the Raptor and 3.5L Ford 150 vs. The Power Wagon and Rebel. Please! Love this channel.
I love my 2006 Power Wagon... 4.56 gears with the 5.7 hemi 👍
When you showed the back seat all I could think about how big the back of a super duty was
I run 93 octane and get get a big increase in gas mileage over 87 octane . It cost LESS to run the better fuel it shocked me of how much less it cost to run .
I like that power wagon, I'd like to get one of them
Nate it’s a flat out awesome rig. Worth every penny. Good luck! 👍
@mike a Maybe useless for you, the only tool for the job for me.
@@nucl3arfamily906 thanks!
I love my Ram Rebel but highway MPG I am pretty sure the EPA measures at 55 MPH.
This review makes me want to go with the rebel. Yes not as hard core off roading but the real world truck use such as towing and fuel economy make the choice for me clear.
I love these reviews it's good knowledge to have when you get into a truck arguement so u dont get yourself into a corner😂
Also I'm not a dodge person but I'd take the rebel
This show is great
As always an amazing video. I’d love to see a comparison video of a fully loaded rebel vs a fully loaded power wagon.
Surprised you guys didnt mention that yhe new powa wagon sounds much better then the old one did.
The Heavy Duty truck is the 3500. The power Wagon would do just fine with the Ecodiesel. And maybe 4.56 gears to compliment 35" tires. The solid axles will last at least 5 replacements of the Rebel front control arms.
Wow shocking, smaller axle and same size tires has more clearance...mind blown!
Chris McLaughlin I never understood why they still only put 33”s on the power wagon. I’ve seen people fitting 37”s on those with just a leveling kit, so I feel like they should be able to fit 35”s from the factory.
@@splewy its gotta be just saving money and fuel economy. 35s from the factory would be perfect. I feel the 33s actually look small on that truck.
splewy i put 35s on mine with no mods, no problem . Definitely should come that way!
@@splewy It makes the center of gravity too high for the Gov. safety sally.
Power wagon is amazing! Can’t beat the price with tradesman with those options
Nice Blue Blockers
In the video it is a tradesman powerwagon. Is there a difference between the Powerwagon interior over just adding the trim “powerwagon” to a tradesman?
2:36 someone got a tad bit scared... papa be gettin the grandson in trouble today!
RAM Power Wagon is more badass than the just the rebel. BUT..... The new RAM Rebel TRX Concept looks like the Raptor version of the RAM
I wish ram did more with the interior on the power wagon like they did with the cool red stitching in the rebel
I hate all the red in the Rebel. Should be an option.
It's basically MPG or Power for acceleration and towing.
C'mon guys, those HD glasses from the basic cable infomercials? TFL that hard up for cash?
Love the work you guys do. Both trucks look great.
The Rebel did not have a truck bed cover and the Power Wagon did..... that helps with highway MPG
On the MPG comparison - what was the wind speed and direction for each run? I notice large differences with the wind at my back versus in my face in my Rebel (and in my MDX for that matter).
Amazed by the improvment on thr powerwagons compared to last year. Probs to RAM
Does Ram use a cylinder deactivation system as Andre described?
Yes it does, on both the 5.7 and the 6.4 liter Hemi.
I have the 6.4 in my challenger scatpack, I get 25.5 on the hwy and 19 city. It has cylinder deactivation from 8 to 4 when all the power isnt needed.
The new Power Wagon looks great and if you're going for off-road and money doesn't really matter, the Power Wagon is the way to go... for the most part. Love the Rebel for day to day driving though.
