Audio Book Agatha Christie Short Story: Parker Pyne Investigates 06 / 12 The Case of the Rich Woman: A New Beginning Parker Pyne, the renowned problem-solver, meets Mrs. Abner Rymer, a wealthy widow longing for joy in her life. Mrs. Rymer, once a farmgirl, married Abner Rymer when they were penniless, enduring years of hardship before he developed a successful engineering process that brought them immense wealth. Initially, they enjoyed their newfound luxury, but it soon lost its allure. Abner's health deteriorated, and he passed away at forty-three, leaving Mrs. Rymer wealthy but lonely. She feels disconnected from her old friends and distrusts her new ones. Seeking fulfillment, she turns to Pyne, who promises to reignite her passion for life for a fee of one thousand pounds. A week later, Pyne arranges a mysterious meeting with a doctor who diagnoses Mrs. Rymer with a mental illness and gives her a drink that causes her to fall asleep. She wakes up in a farmhouse, being called “Hannah” by those around her. Mrs. Gardner, a kind woman, and an elderly doctor explain she had a seizure and has been unconscious for two days. Confused, Mrs. Rymer realizes she’s living the life of a farm servant, complete with a newspaper story claiming she’s been moved to a nursing home due to delusions of being “Hannah Moorhouse.” Though furious with Pyne, she adjusts to her new life, reconnecting with her rural roots. As months pass, Mrs. Rymer grows content with her simple life and forms a deep bond with Joe Welsh, a widowed farmhand. She contemplates confronting Pyne but hesitates, enjoying the peace she has found. Nearly a year later, Pyne appears and reveals the truth: it was all an elaborate ruse. Mrs. Gardner and the farmhouse were part of Pyne’s plan to restore her happiness. Mrs. Rymer, now engaged to Joe, admits she is truly happy. She requests just seven hundred pounds from her fortune to buy a farm with Joe, asking Pyne to donate the rest to hospitals. She insists her new life remains a secret from Joe, and Pyne agrees, leaving another satisfied client. what a magnificent story of the second chance.....this brief story is probably the finest thing Agatha Christie ever wrote....its Dicken's Great Expectations with a happy ending.
Love the Parker Pyne series, i have read Agatha Christie since I was a young girl, and have never heard of it. I do not know how i missed it. ❤❤ from Australia ❤❤
Don't know how I missed this invention of Agatha Christie when reading was a thing. Pretty much combed through at least two public libraries but somehow Mr Parker Pyne remained on the racks. But now here he is and I'm happier for it.
added it in edit, from my own collection. in the middle of putting together a video of some of the music I use in the audio books along with a few other tracks. other people have also have ask, thankyou for listening
