This is one of the, if not the most beautiful performance of this Rachmaninov concerto I have ever heard. Love it so much. There is something about the Russians and their music that is so unique, special and awesome.........

Final thing… she was exceedingly gracious during her bows, often deferring to and including her conductor and orchestra. Most gratifying. The orchestra the same appreciation. Much love on that stage.

I believe some of the extraordinary strength and stamina of Rachmaninoff’s hands may have come back to life in Mechetina, and a great deal of his head and heart also. To hear and see her play through this concerto is like watching a great Olympic athlete: she plays with her whole body, head to toe, so that she has to adjust her bench from time to time. Her strength and precision give her Rachmaninoff’s staccatos and emphases, that bring the piano statements out from among the orchestra in the ensemble parts, so that the piano holds its own amid the whole. In her performing, every note is crisp, and never muddled by the pedals, so often a crutch for lesser pianists. She has Rachmaninoff’s sense of rubato too, and, to the extent an orchestra can follow it, this enlivens their expression of the composer as well. She seems tireless, bringing the same energy to the final cadenza as to the opening “bell” chords. Not being Russian nor even much of a student, I know I am not qualified to properly judge such distinctions - these are merely my impressions, as an appreciative listener, and as the son and brother of local ballet and musical theater pianists, one of whom (my mother) was privileged to hear Rachmaninoff perform in person, so that through her I have grown to love his music since my childhood. Thanks also to the magnificent orchestra and Maestro Van Alphen, who fully match Mechetina’s extraordinary talent and rendition here. And to the unseen and too-often unsung technical crew. I wish the violas’ first statement were more clearly audible; but this is a minor point, and more than made up for by the triumphant closing theme statement with the camera wheeling high above the stage - a truly cosmic moment, as though Rachmaninoff himself were gazing down approvingly on the entire ensemble. Thank God for RUclips and recording media. I would gladly pay much more than I can afford for one chance in this life to hear Mechetina play this concerto in live performance somewhere in the West. But based on what I see on the internet, I would probably have to learn Russian and come to Moscow to find such a performance. And I would have to be a tiny invisible will-o-the-wisp to see all that the cameras show us of the instruments and the faces of the musicians. Thank you, all of you, and once again and forever to Rachmaninoff, a composer for the ages and for infinity. You have done what all great artists do - show us and help us feel how wonderful being human can be, at its best, and thus enlarge life for all of us.

I can't understand how could someone change de wonder of an orchestra like this for an ornganized army in a parade. Yes, both are perfect about they do; discipline, order, focus etc for the best result.But the goal is completely oposite. I have heard hundreds of interpretations of this great work. Mechetina is second to no one. I bet Rachmaninov himself would love this, even though his own interpretation was very different and also amazing. Regarding the conductor, what a fantastic job! I hadn't checked his work before, but will look for everything by him.

I've cry at the end. I regret that people did not get up to cheer this wonderful pianist. A standing ovation she deserves. People look jaded. They don't know all the work and the talent this so difficult concerto requires.

I've heard so many versions of this by many great orchestras and pianists. They are all different in various ways. And somehow I like nearly all of them. This one too. What am amazing pianist!

I love how the piano melodies get merged with the orchestra, more than usual, saving that melody from becoming sometimes overdone. The violins are great by sounding different and more appropriately sounding for this piece than with some other orchestras. I hope i am respectful and make sense? I enjoyed this more than expected.
This is one of the first, maybe the first, classical music pieces I ever deliberately had played to me when 14 by a friend at school. I was hooked, of course, and have been listening to music, especially piano concertos ever since (50 years). Can one very grow tired of this utterly beautiful piece of music? Well I haven't yet and like other comments below, I have heard it many many times and crashed my way through the score at a piano many times too. From the first couple of pages this was clearly a special performance, so thank you from me too in England, Maestro, for making it available and thank you to Ms Mechetina and Orchestra for playing so ravishingly beautifully.

The “Fugue” section mid 3rd movement was so expressive.. and musically tight. The tutti directly after was powerful.

I have heard hundreds of interpretations of this great work. Mechetina is second to no one. I bet Rachmaninov himself would love this, even though his own interpretation was very different and also amazing.
Regarding the conductor, what a fantastic job! I hadn't checked his work before, but will look for everything by him.

Thanks a lot Miss Mechetina. Yes I agree @exa1803, for me too it's one of the great and amazing performance of this concerto I've ever heard. Another one is by Khatia Buniatichvili. I've cry at the end. I regret that people did not get up to cheer this wonderful pianist. A standing ovation she deserves. People look jaded. They don't know all the work and the talent this so difficult concerto requires.

I love how the piano melodies get merged with the orchestra, more than usual, saving that melody from becoming sometimes overdone. The violins are great by sounding different and more appropriately sounding for this piece than with some other orchestras. I hope i am respectful and make sense? I enjoyed this more than expected.

This is one of the first, maybe the first, classical music pieces I ever deliberately had played to me when 14 by a friend at school. I was hooked, of course, and have been listening to music, especially piano concertos ever since (50 years). Can one very grow tired of this utterly beautiful piece of music? Well I haven't yet and like other comments below, I have heard it many many times and crashed my way through the score at a piano many times too. From the first couple of pages this was clearly a special performance, so thank you from me too in England, Maestro, for making it available and thank you to Ms Mechetina and Orchestra for playing so ravishingly beautifully.
