All heads of state cost quite a lot, and most of the fabulous "royal wealth" is inherited. I don't condone the whole caboodle, but i think it could - and will - be reformed and modernised when HMQ dies. Charles knows it, and William knows it even more. Many things could be done to reduce the wealth and privilege, and legal and taxation anomalies without drastically changing the Constitutional arrangements.

US Americans believe the American identity is one that is separate from England, a rejection of it. What I find extremely fascinating when watching pro-democracy/anti-monarchy videos like this, from people in the UK, is that it really demonstrates how American culture is just a relatively minor mutation of the English one and has been so for centuries. Instead of monarchs, Americans advocate for their own subjugation by industrialists/billionaires. In spite of American religiosity, we have created a superior class of aristocrats within the US whose status is derived from essential/inherent (god-given) talents/intelligence, which is virtually identical to the religious rationale that was used and is still used by royalists within the UK to justify the existence of the monarchy (while the UK has a majority of non-religious people.) Murdoch's ability to corrupt US and UK politics through the same tricks of nationalist rhetoric seems to stem from what is, at the core of it, a shared imperialist identity that is easily threatened by any notion that it will, at some very near but unspecified point in time, stop being the same imperialist power it has always been.

A very elegant synopsis. But a few comments:-
The Queen is, by definition, apolitical, being only a constitutional monarch. Now I think that I would be extremely naive to believe that she has not, at times, exercised her considerable 'soft' power to influence events, but never overtly. (quite whether non-overt exercise of power is good or bad, well hmm). But non-overt exercise of power can be be a force for good if it deflects more extreme governmental action without disturbing matters general. And this has not just been in the UK, but all over the world, remember.
And I don't believe that I am subjugated by the Monarchy. But I do believe that I am subjugated by big business and the media. In this respect I think your comparison between the two fails.
Possibly America is going through the (not trauma) but radical adjustment that the UK went through when the Empire evaporated. America is going through the same, with the rise of China.
And of course, jackals and hyenas are waiting on the sidelines.

As a portuguese, I want to say that, once you get rid of them, its stupid to bring the monarchy back, but if you still have them, you should keep them.
When the republicans killed king Carlos in 1908, and the monarchy ended in 1910, we had 16 years of one of the most unstable regimes in history (45 governments in 16 years, wich is more prime ministers in 16 years than kings in 800 years, for you to see, one government get us in the WWI, the next was pro german and abandoned the soldiers in the front), then we had 5 years of military dictatorship, and then Estado Novo was established, the longest fascist dictatorship. Then we had half an year of comunism, that was also removed by another military cue to avoid becoming a comunist dictatorship. Then we had 5-10 years of social instability, party sponsored terrorism, famin in the south, etc...
I cant even think in bringing our monarchy back. Its so stupid of an idea that the monarchist party got 220 votes last national election. But if I could turn back time, I would be in that square shouting that someone is going to shot the king.
The monarchy is stability, and is associated with national culture. They dont hold any real power, but more like pieces of "national furniture".
The british and spanish royal families are particulary toxic (they are next door, so any news from Philip VI, the king emeritus and the princesses make their ways into our tabloids very easily, and they are prety toxic to), but you can see how the royal family of Belgium is the only thing keeping the country together, and the examples of the netherlands, danemark and the scandinavian monarchies.

I think it is disgusting that we are celebrating this woman's birthday and spending millions(or is it billions?) of pounds of public tax payers monies at a time when there is a major cost of living crisis going on where people are choosing to heat or eat and when some can't even afford to buy food and have to visit a food bank to get by.
I think the bubble will burst once the queen who incidentally hasn't done anything for the people she professes to serve passes away. She chooses to miss the state opening of parliament because she was supposed to be too sick yet a couple of days later she is opening a new Tube line and is at the horse races. She shows more emotion towards her horses and dogs than she does the people. Remember, this woman had to dragged kicking and screaming down to London after the death of Diana who only did so after the people dared to ask the question where was she and talk about becoming a republic started in the news media.

Strangely England is stuck with it. One unelected person head of the church the military and the people. Scotland on the other hand still retains its own Crown as written into The act of Union 1707. A fact that Westminster, almost all politicians and the media chose to ignore, the same way that they have treated other annexed countries. Scotland's sovereignty lies with the people and a King or Queen are subject to the will of the people. This is why no English monarch has been crowned in Scotland since Queen Anne. To do so the Coronation Oath of Scotland must be taken which reduces them to the leader of equals and can be sacked by the will of the people. We wouldn't want the English to get that idea would we?

The last time I had a Netflix subscription I binged watched The Crown. If that series is anywhere near accurate members of the Royal Family don't even dress themselves. They have servants to do that for them. And if news paper rumours are true Prince Charles has a servant to wipe his backside after having a number 2 and another servant puts toothpaste on his toothbrush when Charles cleans his teeth. Whether he actually brushes his teeth himself or has a servant do even that I don't know but these people are bloody lazy to the nth degree. Can you imagine what people would say if you or I were that lazy? Royals get away with it though.
