As I posted yesterday, there seems to be very little mention of the recent revelations that the Queen often interfered covertly in the framing of government policy to protect her own massive financial interests. For all its failings, The Guardian does provide some useful information at times.
I'd like to mention at this point that if King Charles should at any point find the "duty and sacrifice" that are required of him too onerous (and the BBC make the "burden" of reigning sound almost beyond human endurance), I'd be perfectly happy to do a 50-50 jobshare, though I'd be expecting a pro-rata payment from the Sovereign Grant of £83.6 million per annum and corresponding payments from the Duchies of Lancaster and Cornwall.

As someone who believes in justice and equality I'm a staunch anti-royalist. I feel extremely uncomfortable right now at the pressure to succumb to cloying sentimentality and nostalgia. My mother died a few weeks ago aged 93 and I was blessed to be able to be by her side for a few days, holding her hand. That was a blessing denied to so many during the pandemic. I don't expect Mrs. Windsor had to wait in a queue to get an appointment with her doctor, and I don't expect her family will struggle to pay for her funeral costs - they have taxpayers for that!
I struggled through the nonsense that was the Jubilee this summer; now we will have weeks of sycophantic fawning about how 'our Queen' was a wonderful person. And I've just realised that we still have the disgusting spectacle of an expensive coronation at a time of public anxiety over the cost of living to look forward. I wonder how the establishment will spin that one. 🤨

Hi Jacqui, i subscribe every single word you wrote. My father died aged 91 this january after spending his last 40 years severely disabled as afterrmath of a surgery to remove a brain cancer.
He died alone in a geriatric public hospital where we was moved from home upon a kidney disfunction, because in italy (we are italians and we live in this fake democracy nation) due to the hateful covid restrictions,no family member was allowed to enter into hospital, no matter if vaccinated or not.myself and my brother (the only relatives he had) could therefore not even stay with him while he was passing away. That said, i respect the death of anybody but i do not find fair that the dignity of death is based on one's supposed importance and richness. My father was a working class hero before his cancer but, though lacking education, he was very clever and with huge personality and fought his poor health condition with strenght and courage. So to my eyes, his common citizen life was as important as the life of any person with power

As a non-Brit, I find this whole mourning thing extra weird because there's plenty for Brits to be proud of, and yet there's this strange implication people should feel affected by this. The vapid speeches about the queen's "reign" and her "great achievements" in building modern Britain despite the fact she's not supposed to actually reign and is more of a ceremonial tourist attraction. The insistent pushing of the idea that she provided stability to the nation despite the fact the UK has in no way been sheltered from global and domestic volatility throughout the last few decades. The hostility towards people who dare bring up the extremely unsavoury acts she/the monarchy had enabled because "now is not the time" or "respect the dead". She and her family are lobbyists for their own interests. I can recognise she meant a lot to other people for reasons that make little rational sense to me personally, but it doesn't stop it feeling odd, antiquated and whitewashed. My first thought after receiving the news was how many awful policies would be rushed through that will make countless people's lives worse while the media are preoccupied with this emotional nonsense instead of fulfilling their duty of holding the government to account. It's hard not to be cynical about this stuff if you bother to look around you.

But again having said that I don't feel particularly sad, I'm not happy just not sad. It's as if a celebrity has died that I never paid too much attention to. My heart goes out to her friends and family just as it does to anyone who has died.

    • @steveharrison76
      @steveharrison76 2 года назад +8

Same here. I also think it’s worth pointing out that the sort of gleeful reaction to this expressed by some is extremely unhelpful to the republican cause, because it just gives them emotional ammunition to push back against a serious conversation about it. We do have to accept and come to terms with the fact that, whilst we do not feel the same, there are many, many folks who feel genuinely bereaved and upset about this, and responding in a certain way will damage the republican cause by hardening people against the idea, because what they will remember is that, in their grief, they were mocked and the object of their grief was vilified.
Basically, it’s a rhetorical and political own goal. It’s like this: Yes, I am well aware of all the terrible stuff involved in the monarchy and the end of the empire; I’m just saying that now isn’t the time. Let the grieving process end and let people get back on track. They’ll remember your kindness and support despite your differing beliefs. But they will also remember your (as they see it) spite and hatred.
Hope that makes sense. I’m just worried that we will have to go through another go-round of not having a proper discussion about it because of the hangover caused by perceived hostility at this crucial point in time for the debate. “We don’t need to talk about this with you; you lot made yourself clear when the last monarch died” is going to be difficult to circumvent with logic because it appeals to emotion and ‘tradition’ and the idea that all republicans are like that.

The British monarchy is not even "nearly thereabouts" a continuous line since the Conqueror....Richard II was deposed by his cousin Henry Bollingbroke; Henry Tudor was several degrees removed from the crown before winning the throne by right of conquest. William of Orange became king of England purely by invading from the Netherlands; and the Hanoverian line of kings and queens were literally imported from Germany after a Britain's Got Talent style process in the late 1700s. Even the House of Windsor may not be the last line of British monarchy. History tells us different.

Constitutional monarchy means that the prestige of state is held by someone who doesn't weigh in on political issues, and so can be seen as a symbol of stability and calm. An elected head of state would have many of the same trappings of prestige, meaning the high expenditure - actually, very high, because without the monarchy, the Windsors would just become landowners paying vastly less tax than they currently do, and we'd either have to buy properties back off them to make them state residences, or build an entirely new one - along with the costs of election cycles, *and* would then be an inherently divisive figure, simply by virtue of having been elected on the basis of having opinions. A monarch doesn't need to have opinions; in fact, it's generally beneficial if they don't.

I was planning on moving back one day, but Brexit destroyed that - Brexit made me lose a lot of respect for our British cousins across the pond. Didn’t think y’all could look any more backwards than Brexit…until the Met started arresting people for asking “Who elected [Charles]?” and holding blank signs of paper, in peaceful protest of the monarchy, imperialism, and colonialism.
Don’t get me wrong, the US has its fair share of gross behavior (see, recently: Trump). BUT: we also have the choice to remove our heads of state democratically. That people as “civilized” as the Brits have reverted back to peasant brain immediately upon the death of a 96 year old monarch, made me rethink what remaining respect that I had left for you folks post-Brexit.

I think decades ago and during times or the two world wars monarchy had a much greater and more significant role as Britain seemed to still see the kings and Queens as equal to if not more important than Westminster. Now and for the last few decades I've seen no point to them apart from the charitable deeds and sometimes Charles speaking up about things in society that aren't good, highlighting them. Yes they've given Britain some form of shrouded awe and attracted travellers to London but the fact of the costs of their upkeep, all their lands houses and squirreled away money outweighs their usefulness. She was 96! I feel no need to 'mourn' but I do cry for those in nursing homes who died because of covid mismanagement, the people who died providing us with services. The people who've died because of the dwp process and those who will kill themselves because they can see no way out of their lives, those who have and are dying due to lack of nhs healthcare, those who will die because they're cold poor sick. I have no idea why hero worship is a thing be it monarchy or a singer or an actor. The heroes are the ordinary people who against all odds manage to get up every day. It seems to me to be the biggest gaslight ever to believe that one woman's life is worth so much more. There are times when the good of the one, the life of the one outweighs that of the many but those are when the life of the one will help so many more like ghandi, Martin Luther King, Oscar schindler, mother theresa so many brave men and women who without them more people would suffer. The majority of the time the lives of the many outweigh that of the few or the one and I feel this is one of those times ✌

To think, her reign as a monarch started with huge promise, Everest conquered by a subject of Her Majesty, she was head of a nation that had pulled through a perilous economic period, after the successful restructuring of the economy after a long, painful war, where Britain was seen as the moral colossus who stood up to Nazism/fascism.
We had nationalised industries and utilities, a welfare state was in operation and a new NHS. Labour relations were not great but they had improved. Trade Unions were as knitted into the economy, just as much as the captains of industry.
When HRH Elizabeth II hit her arse on that throne, a national House building programme was at its height.
Society underwent transformation and progress through the 60s. The Post-War settlement was both real and an acceptance of the system embedded itself in UK politics.
Then Thatcherism and the destruction of the Post War settlement began in earnest. Thanks in large part to UK membership of the EU, the benefits economically delivered. Despite Thatcherism, not because of it. Yet, we have never escaped that stench of decline.
The return of the Labour government in 97, delivered a true boost to both economy and to a social improvement for UK citizens. When 2008 struck, the rest they say is history. Decline, confusion, decay, corruption, incompetence and Brexit...as we now undergo the roar of the dinosaurs, who rage at a world that is changing around them and contend with the imposing winds of reality, that they have hid from, for far, far too long. Maybe the greatest service Her Maj has done, is departing, as millions now have to contend with 'real change' ...the departure of a constant feature can only impose the necessity of reflection. A reflection that monarchists and brow-beaters cannot change. Our new King knows only too well...change is coming. This could provide hope!

Lots for all of the UK to think about and ponder during your long cold winter ahead. Elizabethan Republican gay Australian lefty here. Wishing you all the best and I hope you make it through everything you have got yourselves into. Best of luck, if it keeps getting worse why not come and migrate here! Better weather better wages AND we still have King Charles. 😜

For gods sake the body not cold yet. Critcism of the role of Monarchy in a modern state is a valid subject but could'nt it wait till after the funeral?

Something I find interesting is that, among other things, Charles has suddenly become head of the Church of England. In the past he made a statement that he wanted to be defender of faiths rather than defender of the faith. There has been speculation that he is closer to being something like a druid or a agan than a Church of England Christian. Could this eventually lead to disestablishment of the church? This is something which I would welcome, and which I believe would be good for both church and state.

A journalist pal of mine who was there has told me on that apparently she had a stroke. Might have something to with the mobility issue references. He might be wrong but this got out to several people

I think she died days ago, they just had to delay it due to the timing of putting in the PM.

Expected better from Novera….her lot do us no favours along with the Politicians who defend the status quo !
Yes you were respectful in your report of her passing but could’ve just been watching the BBC imo…..oh well then ☹️

Yes rather. Very disappointed in the coverage. It’s a good time for England to return all the stolen treasures, and make amends and come to the realisation that they are really a piss ant country now, full of stolen ideas, peoples and treasures and very little else. But that isn’t just the torries it’s all of them.
