    • @crustyoldfart
      @crustyoldfart 2 года назад +13

      " Charles did nothing to convince the welsh people they benefit from having a Prince of Wales "
      If this comes as a surprise to someone, then that person does not know much history. I was given to believe the creation of the title was in response around 1300 AD by Edward I to the Welsh people to give them a prince of their own, one that spoke no English. His response was to appoint his new born eldest son who was too young to speak anything. IOW the creation of the office was a trick. So I doubt if the Welsh have ever been fooled into thinking that the PofW was anything but a symbol of foreign rule.
      On a personal note I spent several months living in South Wales in 1956. I lodged with a Welsh speaking family and came to know them and respect the Welsh people. They are truly a nation who genuinely loves and appreciates choral music and poetry in all its forms. After they had learned to trust me that admitted that their general view of the English [ Saeson ] was that they were nation of barbarians - a view which in time I was able to understand and accept.

      You only have to see the footage of him snarling at a serf to take the inkwell away during the signing of his Oath - or know that letters of redundancy were sent to Clarence House staff during the Thanksgiving service to the Queen at St Giles' Cathedral in Edinburgh on Monday. Spoilt, privileged, entitled and totally out of touch with those 'beneath' him in supposed importance and social standing. I'm a republican, detest the Royals and all they stand for and feel hardly anything about the death of the Queen - but I doubt even she would have behaved that viciously or callously.

I have a better idea of how a long word breaks down ,how each bit might sound and how to distance myself from being an Englishman wanker.

Cue tedious story about a holiday in Sorrento (I've never been there) thirty years ago or "I wish I could speak Italian; it's so musical." (It took my five years grafting as a very underpaid university assistant). When they discover my other working language is German they ask me why. So I tell them the truth - it's a beautiful language for telling jokes, being tender, talking about big ideas and nature, and it's much better than English for explaining complicated technical and intellectual subjects, whereas Italian is great for swearing, insulting, and generally letting off steam. One of these days I would love to learn Welsh but I'd have to move to Wales to learn it as it is not widely spoken on Tyneside.

    Talking about civic nationalism in Scotland and the increasing discussion around Wales. Why won't the Labour Party even acknowledge that civic nationalism is a thing or even a type of Nationalism which is a good inclusive nationalism. The party line is simply ALL NATIONALISM IS BAD, which we know (in Scotland) is P1sh! That's the reason for Labour's collapse in Scotland, they ignore what the SNP is about. I love how you guys respect what the SNP are trying to do - yeah, disagree with it, but you respect the process and the technicalities of what we are voting for in Scotland. Keep it up.

    I think Charles and all the royals should have freedom of speech and be able to talk publicly about political issues they care about, I just don't think they should be saying that while being royals and monarchs. Abolish the monarchy and the whole dilemma disappears!

    The BBC's written mandate is to inform educate and entertain. Not to editorialise on behalf of the establishment. The deliberate editing out of the crowd's /complete/ response to the arrival of King Charles is sinister. And the BBC has previous form with this in the shape of Boris Jonhnson, and disapproving noises being edited out of the footage of his platinum jubilee cathedral arrival. This is before we even get into the whole area of Newsnight photoshopping Corbyn's face in front of Russia's Kremlin. The BBC's much vaunted impartiality is at this stage now clearly a sham and it is past time we had a discussion about the future of this organisation.

    I was thinking today, Charles could really put his money where his mouth is and give over Clarence House to refugees and the homeless. Wouldn't that be a real positive and a positive change for what the British monarchy could do for those in need? Instead of saying that they care while doing the opposite....

    5.31, have you ever reflected on the saying "taking the Mick"? Especially thoughtless here, it's a slur based in anti Irish Racism, we were traditionally portrayed as "thick" etc by racist Brits, one of the several derogatory nicknames given us is "Micks" taking the Mick is abound winding up somone considered "thick" or "stupid". No offense taken, but in good faith please reflect on the colonist legacy the Irish People still grapple with.

    When do William and Kate start their Welsh language lessons?
    I’m sure the people of Wales are thrilled with having yet another English Prince appointed to lord over them, I’ve heard he’s planning to run a coach from Cardiff or Swansea twice per month straight to Birmingham to watch his beloved Aston Villa, he can bond with all his new football loving subjects (although he’ll be travelling by helicopter from one of his palaces).

    What you say about Westminster was well illustrated by Mhairi Black, one of the Socialists in the SNP. Her election in 2015 against Douglas Alezxander, Shadow Foreign Secretary and touted as likely next leader of the Labour Party was a huge shock and Labour's death knell in Scotland. Weeks after the election she complained that she had been promptly allocated a hook on which to hang her sword (swords are banned in the chamber, so every MP must have a personal hook on which to hang ... umm ... "his" weapon). But she had not yet been allocated as much as a desk, let alone part of a shared office, to deal with correspondence and respond to issues being raised by her constituents in Paisley. She was making do as best she could by working on a window ledge in a corridor.
