Pro tip for camping at Afton Canyon: Even though it seems dry, everything is going to be thoroughly soaked by dawn due to condensation as it cools. So if you are tenting, set things up as if you are going to be in heavy rain.
There is a campground in Afton Canyon near one of the rail bridges over the Mojave River. When a train comes through in the dark of night, the locomotive headlights illuminate the canyon walls brilliantly.
When you were low on seniority pole Vegas to Yermo was where you worked. After you got more seniority you usually worked Vegas to Milford. More time off Vegas to Milford.
Can't get to the mountains out there that the railroads run through but the videos says it all. That's what america is all about the stunning beauty of it all. The running of the trains thru the mountains is awesome. Such a blessing to see that and anywhere else and our great land of America
I SPENT A LOT OF TIME IN AROUND THAT ENTIRE STRETCH OF RR FROM BARSTOW UP AND THRU RAINBOW CANYON. THIS IS THE VERY BEST OF FILMING THAT IVE SEEN !!!!!! 7idea production is super great!! I traveled this route by car , alone. What a thrill. I will buy your production’s FOR SURE!!! THANK YOU Joe Peters sr. 6.16.23.
Been through many times in jeeps and buggies. Camped on a old mine tailings plateau on the north east end that over looks the desert towards the east. Cook a steak and watch trains coming for miles from the east. At night you can see the signal lights for many miles go on and off in sequence as the train heads east.
I'm from Switzerland and my first time in the US was in 1981/82. We bought a metallic green station wagon in SF and used it to drive across the US. One stop I remember very well was off the Interstate between LA and Las Vegas - Afton Canyon. They had a campground there and we spent two or three nights there being the only guests. I remember the rail line and an Amtrak passenger train that went by. Cute video and a good approach to also show the scenery a bit, not just the trains. It's a wonderful place.
In the early 70s (we lived in a haunted house) right next to train tracks. I would time my sleeping with the night train(s). It drowned out all the banging/noises in the house, and put me to sleep
My brother and I used to duck hunt in the area when the rains created a temporary lake nearby. Remember walking under that overhead bridge structure just wasting a good Saturday morning when dad was out in the duck blind. Found a really cool blue crystal that I still have to this day
I was an AMT engineer out of LAUPT. I ran the Desert Wind trains, 36/36 LA to Las Vegas. It was the best road job I ever had. It was a fast run LA to Vegas. In October 1988, I got run off the mainline by the 3519 West. He pissed away his air and lost a 12,000 to port ash train going to the Port of Long Beach. The engineer gets me on the radio and wanted to know where I was at. I told him I was at Kelso and she had me lined into the hole at Hayden. He comes back and tells me to "shake it" cause he's not going to make! We got in the clear and here he comes down the mountain, 60/70 mph in emergency, sparks from to back, pinwheels. After that, off to Vegas.
Before the demise of the Wind, I was working in LA and enjoyed an overnight turn on the Wind between Pomona and Milford, UT. Darkness prevented seeing much beyond Las Vegas, but I can say I rode the line that far. Staying awake in Milford for the layover was a bit of a challenge--no coffee shop, no bar, nothing.... Not even a freight to rattle things a little. Oh, but it did snow for about 30 minutes.
@@glennfoster2423 It's to bad you couldn't see anything. The desert has a beauty all its own. South of the main line is the Devil's Playground, at around Sands. It never looks the same day to day. F4 Phantoms from Nellis AFB would buzz the train all the time. They would be about 100-200 yards away at almost train level!, Awesome sight and sound! coming up from behind us, what a treat.
I enjoyed seeing the old "coded lines" (telegraph lines) as they have almost completely disappeared everywhere else. Perhaps in this very dry location, the poles will take a very long time to rot and so they may survive for a few decades more.
Thanks Dan! By the way, folks, if anyone likes drone footage of trains, Railfan Dan has a ton of great videos right here! www.youtube.com/@TheRailfanDan
yeeeep i was stationed at FT irwin 07-09 worked for Grumman there… that’s the only years i got videos out there…. talk about a base in the middle of nowhere 😅 😎👍
Great Video. I always wondered what the line looked like once it leaves the south side of I-15 west of Zzzyx Rd at Baker. We dont see the tracks again until just south of Vegas near Primm.
There are many places to film Cima sub if you go off road. For 4WD: the river depth frequently exceeds 24 inches, so other than a few models of jeeps, there arent many stock vehicles which are going to make it across without getting water in the axles. However, a stock 4wd with a high clearance package can take you the whole length of the mojave road on either side of the river as long as you have the right tires. Do not go on the road with ordinary passenger tires! You need a on/off road tread minimum.
Another great railfan adventure near here is between Barstow and Amboy, which features the famous Ash Hill and driving historic Route 66 that parallels the BNSF tracks pretty much the entire way. Amboy is home to Amboy Crater and Roy’s Motel & Cafe of Trainz computer fame.
Terrific upload! Never saw this canyon before. Great rock formations! Could have shown the river a little more especially for late tuners-in. I'm 79. July 23, 2023. St. Joseph, MO, USA

Yes but not long for the world. Just west of the canyon they were in jumbled up piles. I talked with a UP signal maintainer that said this was the first line on the UP to have CTC.
Yes especially when compared with the BNSF Transcon that was seeing around 80 per day at that time. I think UP was around 12 per day when we were there.
fantastic video superb creation enjoyed
Thank you very much!

Yes that is the second crossing featured at 7:14. The campground is on the far side of the bridge from this angle.

A visually stunning production. The stretch of railroad between Yermo and Modena, Utah is the most amazing desert railroad you'll find anywhere.
Thank you very much! I agree on the scenery. That's the best part of the old LA&SL line.

The whole area is magnificent. Cajon Summit to Needles and Barstow to Las Vegas is extraordinary. 😊
Magnificent canyon, with the erosion the mountains transform into a colorful cathedral, 17:33, 17:39, 17:47 and 19:23.

Does anyone here find desert country beautiful? My relatives think it is ugly. Not me.
Will you be filming Union Pacific Big Boy #4014 on it's West Coast Steam Tour when it tours the PNW states.
Magnificent :)
Good video, like.
Very Nice Video 👍
Thank you!
I've noticed in this video that on two occasions, the UP signals take a bit to drop. Is that a UP thing? Or something else?
I have noticed that too. I am wondering if that has to do with lag time of the PTC system? Just a guess.
@7idea Productions Interesting. I'd kinda wondered if that was it. I live in CSX territory, and they drop a lot quicker.
Also the north of the border has beautiful country
MANZARALAR HARİKA!
I like train videos on RUclips 👍
Excellent video, beautiful scenery. How they manage to keep those rails so perfect 12:03 even in such extreme weather?
Thank you for commenting!
Regular maintenance is key here in the canyon. The slow order I mention in the program was due to ongoing track work.

What are the chances you’ll do BNSF’s Angora Sub? There’s some AMAZING rolling hills between Sterling and Bridgeport
Is there any trains run threw blythe ca
Is it usual to see Eastern motive power (CSX and NS) out west? Also...this is beautifully shot and edited.
Yes it is quite common.
Great work. I always need to know what year railroad films were shot. What year was this video made?
This was shot in 2018.
What made you decide to use "lunar" as a noun? It's an adjective.
What camera do you use

Is there a webcam at Afton canyon or Dagget?
SEMA ? Or could it be Cima ?
The dog toys are on their way!!!
Must be annoying to be woken up by a train horn at 6 AM every morning. Those houses right next to the rails are at point blank to the sound
King train
The world sure is over populated
CIMA not SEMA
I didn't realize I was saying it wrong. That is how I have always heard it so I assumed it was correct.
@@7ideaproductions it's pronounced SEE-MA, but spelled Cima. Beautiful videos. I live in Las Vegas.

I understand the line,LA,SALTLAKE is lightly trafficked!
Yes especially when compared with the BNSF Transcon that was seeing around 80 per day at that time. I think UP was around 12 per day when we were there.
BNSF doesnt belong there.
Ukrain relief.
Do I see pole lines still in service? that is unusual
Yes but they were not long for the world when I shot this in 2018.
