Here's my experience taking Ozempic for 1 year as a person living with type 1 diabetes.
Get through diabetes burnout 👉 amzn.to/3th5QF7
Ozempic was intended for people with type 2 diabetes and for those living with obesity under the name Wegovy. But Ozempic can have a huge impact on type 1 diabetes, too.
Even people with type 1 diabetes can struggle with insulin resistance, weight gain, and difficulty managing your appetite.
Beyond insulin, there are five other hormones that people with type 1 diabetes don't produce normal amounts of. These hormones play a big role in managing how you digest food, your insulin sensitivity, how much sugar your liver makes, your appetite, and signaling to your brain that you're full!
This is my experience taking Ozempic for 1 year.

I have just gone on Ozempic 2 days ago as a Type 1 of 30 years. OMG, and now I use no short-acting, and my sugars are perfect. My story is this story exactly. Thank you
Congrats! Awesome! Thanks for sharing your experience!!!
My dr told me about that today but mine and most insurance don’t cover it 🤷🏻♂️
@@lilspicytuna Gotta get a doc who knows how to write the prescription! Check out DiabetesNP.com -- Chris Szoke is an NP and he can write RXs for Ozempic and understands how to get past insurance.
Same , started mounjaro . But that doesn’t cause ketones ?
@@pamelasfeir6876 Nope. SGLT-2s are high risk for ketones in T1D.
TLDR: Ozempic can be beneficial for managing Type 1 diabetes by reducing insulin needs, managing insulin resistance, suppressing dawn phenomenon, reducing morning blood sugar spikes, and helping with weight loss and appetite control.
00:00 📌 Ozempic can benefit type 1 diabetes by decreasing insulin needs and managing insulin resistance, despite exercise and a healthy diet.
02:26 👩⚕ Ozempic helped manage Type 1 diabetes by suppressing dawn phenomenon and reducing morning blood sugar spikes.
04:14 👍 Ozempic helped maintain goal weight and reduce insulin needs by almost 50% due to appetite and weight loss.
05:55 👍 Ozempic helped with weight loss and reduced irrational hunger cues for type 1 diabetes.
07:22 👩⚕ Lower dose of Ozempic worked well for managing insulin sensitivity and reduced negative side effects.
08:28 👩⚕ Ozempic for Type 1 diabetes can cause occasional nausea and fullness, but lower doses can still provide blood sugar benefits with changed insulin timing.
10:16 🩸 Ozempic smoothed blood sugar variability and reduced insulin sensitivity, but also caused a severe low due to miscalculated insulin dosage for high-fat food, leading to emergency glucagon and eating two bowls of cereal to feel safe falling asleep.
12:30 👩⚕ Working with healthcare team to reduce insulin doses, Ozempic helped with appetite and insulin needs for type 1 diabetes, but difficult to access and wishes to continue taking it.
Reduced insulin sensitivity? Or increased insulin sensitivity/ reduced insulin resistance?
I was researching GLP1 tonight and stumbled on your video. I think you just added on some years to my T1D health. Thank you! So many relative points in this video correlate to what I've experienced and questioned. I feel we as T1D are just as educated as the professionals. We live this!
I'm so glad! I have a couple others on Ozempic that might be helpful too:
Getting Ozempic with T1D

My First Month on Ozempic
ruclips.net/video/YylFyOW-e1Q/видео.html
I started looking at weightless jabs for my wife who is disabled, I am a diabetic and found this, O thought that lots of these feelings were just me, especially the dawn phenomenon as the consultant seemed to think it was rarer than previously thought, but It has come apparent that this is an issue with me. Its great to see that this has worked and has given me hope that things can work. thanks for this :)
So glad that you’re putting this out there, I’ve been on it for 6 months. A warning that When I first started my blood sugar completely dropped so I had to start on just 10 clicks of the pen and increased it by two clicks each week until I hit the lowest dose of .25mg. That ensures that you have no nausea and less hypoglycaemia to start. I have reduced all insulin quite a lot because ozempic smooths out spikes and I have lost 13 pounds.
Thanks for sharing those tips! Great advice -- and something doctors don't really always consider. Thank you!
OMG - your video is mind-blowing for me. In these 16 minutes I have learned more about T1D than in the last 6 years since I have been diagnosed. I live in Germany and we are years behind the US concerning diabetes treatment. I have never struggled a lot with weight before, but then gained 40 pounds since taking insulin and cannot get them off. I did not know, that it is also due to the lack of further hormones.
Since in Germany it is not very common yet to prescribe Semiglutides, and definitely is not approved for T1 diabetics, I managed to get a presciption for Mounjaro from an online doctor, so am relying on researching myself. Your video is gold! I had no clue how much decrease of insulin I could expect. At least now I have a rough idea.
YESSS. I'd recommend watching "Hacking Insulin Resistance" next to help learn strategies for reducing your insulin needs that will help with gradual weight loss! So glad this was helpful.
I was on Ozempic it made me very tired, I stopped it right away, all I wanted to do is sleep so now my doctor put me on Jardiance.
Great information, great channel. Thank you looking forward to seeing more video.
Interesting! I haven't heard anyone experience that side-effect before. Thanks for sharing that -- and for watching!
What is jardiance? Ive been T1d for 58yrs and have always had a hard time balancing my blood sugars. Hoping my endo will prescribe me ozempic.
It is amazing that drug companies haven't created something like this for T1's a long time ago to help out with these different hormones.
They haven't bothered to get it approved by the FDA for T1D because our population is so small and it costs millions of dollars. There are other research groups trying to demonstrate its efficacy to help get it FDA approved for T1D!
@@DiabetesNerd since I started Zepbound I am in range over 90 percent every day and my best day was 99%. For anyone interested there is a great Pharmacy in Vienna VA called Generation Pharmacy that has free shipping if you don’t have insurance it is $650 which isn’t bad. Still a lot but if your endo will prescribe you a GLP-1 it does amazing things as Ginger has outlined in her video.
So grateful for your video. I’ve been considering it as a type 1 because managing my weight is really challenging, and I know insulin is one of the factors. My doctor is on board, so this helped me to make my decision!
dawn phenomenon gotta be one of the most aggravating thing about being T1... as soon as i wake up doesn't matter how good my Blood Sugar is i still take some insulin even if i wake up by accident I just know its gonna rise lol
Yes it’s so frustrating! Metformin helps. Ozempic helps even more!
Hey, first time viewer and you’ve made a subscriber! I’ve had Type 1 for 30 years so I’m connecting with everything you’re saying. It’s great to hear your stories. ❤
Aww, thank you!!!
65 yr old type 1 here. Same story, late 30's. Insulin dependent since 2003. Went on Mounjaro instead of Ozempic. Short acting insulin use went to nothing. 4 days with no injections required. More importantly, no ultra low episodes. Should be easy for Type 1's to get.
@@hoosierbud704 awesome!!! Thanks for sharing.
Thank you so much for sharing all of this. I never would have considered it until hearing your testimony. I have been on both Symlin and Metformin in the past but still deal with many of these issues with my type one diabetes. Is it possible as a sensitive person to start at even less of a dose than .25?
You’re really a natural at these videos and I thank you for your research, time and energy to educate us. Very helpful and appreciated! 😊
Hi Cynthia! YES, you can start lower than .25. There are a few clicks to work your way up to .25 so if you just choose the number of clicks, and be consistent with that, you could start there.
Thanks so much! I will consider this medication.
This is exactly where I’m at. My weight shot up these past few years (gained 25 lbs) and my doctor told me it was probably due to my Basel insulin. She wouldn’t prescribe me ozempic or similar semaglutide meds. She did recommend taking Wellbutrin with Naltrexone which apparently are used in combination with each other for weight loss. I didn’t want to do this as I’ve taken Wellbutrin in the past and felt like a zombie. I was able to get ozempic injections and I’ve immediately noticed my appetite change and my insulin needs have gone down.
Oh that's frustrating they wouldn't prescribe it! Glad you found your own way to get it!!!!
20 years T1. My endocrinologist has been advocating using ozempic due to how high my insulin rates are and my frustration around the insulin resistance i experience. But I'm so nervous about becoming dependent on it long-term. Is it something you can see yourself being able to stop at some point? Or is it something you see yourself taking regularly alongside insulin?
And do you have another video on the other hormones under-produced in T1Ds?
A great video, thanks for this. Just a quick question what dose of Metformin are you currently taking (or have you found most effective)?
Hi there! I take 1000 mg at bedtime. I have a video about this here: ruclips.net/video/wAeoDMybBds/видео.html
@@DiabetesNerd thanks for the quick reply. I’ll check it out now
I’m curious on how you are able to get Ozempic? My endo has tried to get it for me, even tried Mounjaro and insurance denied bc I’m not a type 2. She prescribed Symlin but I’m super nervous to try it bc of the lows and taking 3 times a day isn’t ideal when you have an insulin pump.
Great vid, G! 😉
Thank you, Mr. Franklin!
Enjoyed this video. Can you tell me what the 5 hormones that we produce little to none of that you reference in the description box? Thanks! I just subscribe to your channel!
Thank you! The 5 hormones are amylin, ghrelin, glucagon, somatostatin, and polypeptide.
Thank you ! I’m type 1 as well and my insurance refuses to pay for Ozempic. I’m struggling to lose some weight I gained after stopping Ozempic. Also, my BG went out of control for a while. I wish the insurance companies would allow us to have this medication. Glad I subscribed to your channel! Take care.
@@redbarron6559 Your doctor could help you get Symlin, which has to be taken 3X a day and works similarly to Ozempic, but with more digestive side-effects. Metformin might be worth chatting with your doctor about, too! Much easier to get.
I have an appointment next month with my Endocrinologist and will discuss as you’ve lined out. Thanks so much!
Makes sense that ozempic would help with overall insulin needs and in turn; less insulin=less weight (insulin is an anabolic hormone) but how does metformin help you?
Hi Ginger what about compound semiglutide instead of brand name? I just started and pay $150 out of pocket but its worth it. I did have a scary low today and i am sooo glad i found your video (your book was incredibly helpful during my pregnancy) I have decreased my basal and turned off control IQ on my tandem hoping this helps with the lows,i have only had one but as a t1d one bad low is enough 😣
@@yanetdmitri8520 ah yeah I had a rough low on Ozempic too! Just gotta get your dose adjusted like you said. Your version should be the same experience as the branded version! Keep us posted!
Thank you for this information! Super helpful!
So glad! Thanks for watching!
Thank you for sharing this! It's great hearing from an actual T1D who has used Ozempic. It does confuse me being so successful, not just for weight loss, but T1s and T2s, that it was not offered or much discussed at the endocrinologist or any T1 discussion groups (unless I missed it). Regardless, I know lots of folks taking it today that are not Diabetic and knowing the effect on digestion in particular, this could be helpful if it could be added to our insulin? Have you ever experienced Symlin or Pramlintide? It is supposed to work similar to GLP-1s and back in maybe 2012, it did help me with resistance. I tried it again today but it doesn't seem to work any longer.
Symlin was kind of a failed experiment. It's nowhere near as good as Ozempic. You take it multiple times a day and it leaves your system very quickly. Ozempic is far superior! The delayed digestion can help make it easier to time your meals with your insulin doses and prevent those post-meal spikes! I plan on sharing more details about my Ozempic experience -- including next week: Getting Ozempic Without Type 2 Diabetes! Stay tuned!
@@DiabetesNerd Thanks so much! It may be a failed experiment but at that time there weren't many options and it did help me. Today, the options are better of course such as Ozempic. Looking forward to your next video about getting Ozempic without being T2D!
How did taking a Ozempic affect your use of Afrezza?
I take Mounjaro and I definitely notice a slowdown to the release of food from my stomach and therefore the spike in my blood sugars after meals. ( It's wonderful, works even better than Ozempic!). I'm thinking about trying Afrezza this summer. Does the impact of these medications affect the timing of your inhaled insulin use?
Afrezza is so flexible that it works really well with Ozempic/Mounjaro. For most meals, I take my Afrezza dose when I start eating, then I take a follow-up dose an hour or two later depending on the type of meal. If it's higher fat, I know there will be a delay for that second dose. Afrezza is so fast that it is a great fit for Ozempic/Mounjaro because you can watch your CGM and act quickly.
May I ask what your goal BG level is? i.e. 80-100 (normal) or higher? I know it will go up higher than 100 after eating, but do you then try to bring it down into the "normal" range or are you okay with it being within 100-130? With less basal (to prevent lows), I find the day time norm is higher and wondering if I should correct to the "normal" range. Use Afrezza for boluses.
@@denisepalmer5105 I aim for 70-150. I certainly don’t want to be at 150 all day, but that’s the goal for after eating. Gotta be flexible and do your best. Don’t stress out over perfect numbers.
What are the other hormones (besides insulin) that T1 don’t produce….the ones that regulate how much sugar our liver produces, how hungry we are throughout the day, how full we feel when eating, and how quickly our bodies digest food and distribute into bloodstream? I’ve watched this a few times and taken notes to discuss with my endo but would love to know the hormone names.
I explain them all right here in this new video: ruclips.net/video/YHt9G45g3Ws/видео.html
I have had no luck getting insurance to cover it! But, I should be starting semaglutide the compounded version of ozempic tomorrow!!! My doctor is sending my script to a local compounding pharmacy today!!! I’m super excited! But, a little scared as well. Any tips for starting a a type 1? Thanks!!!

Great video! Is there more you can share on the process of getting Ozempic approved? @@estherparry-jones3145 the study on retinopathy is more complex than it simply causing it. It said people with a huge number of other health concerns had higher incidence of diabetic retinopathy while taking ozemlic than those who weren’t taking it. That doesn’t mean it causes retinopathy.
@@DiabetesNerd that’s certainly true it is more complex and the drug wouldn’t cause but I thought it could increase The risk of more complications from it. Although I wouldn’t be sure how though. Thank you for your reply
My endo prescribed this to me with zero education or counseling. I couldnt find a single video about it back in march 2024. I decided not to take it. Im 29 and overweight due to multiple factors but my endo only wanted me to lose weight with this, not to primarily help blood sugar. She ridiculed me and i didnt feel confident taking it. It's still in my fridge. Idk if I'll try because the side effects seem bad. I have severe hypo anxiety and food anxiety
There's little research for t1d with ozempic so thanks for sharing this. There is also research that says that many individuals gain back about half the weight they lost with ozempic, so counseling and dietician advice is still necessary.
PS I just realized you're the author of the book, When I Go Low. Someone in a facebook t1d group sent it to me to use with my type 1 kids class. They loved it

I thought Ozempic isn't supposed to be used for thye one at all. What doctor signed off on that? I hope you were monitored very closely. I was on Ozempic for type 2. I lasted six months. Could not stand it. And I didn't give me any instructions. Now I've learned you have to really increase your protein intake a lot to keep from losing a lot of muscle. I am T1D and have been for 15 years. I want to try Ozempic and even went as far as getting a prescription and have my first package waiting at the house. However I’m scared to take it. The reason I’m anxious is because with ozempic out of the picture I know that when I suddenly change my diet and exercise to a healthier routine I so quickly have to reduce the insulin needed. If ozempic does that on its own then I know if I start ozempic and start eating healthier and exercising I will need so much less insulin at a very fast rate. Increasing the chance for dangerous lows. Then the most anxious part for me is if ozempic is also slowing the rate at which the food is digesting then does this also mean fixing dangerous lows become more difficult?? If my sugar is 60 and I chug a bottle of soda will it still spike to highs within minutes? Basically, will I still easily be able to save my own life if in a dangerous low situation? You even said yourself you had two bowls of cereal AND an emergency glucagon and woke up at only 250. I’ve never used an emergency kit in my life and then two bowls without insulin would easily have had me in the high 200s…
I wanna do it in just scared of the lows… is saving yourself from lows still easy?
Hi there! Yes, starting Ozempic means making immediate adjustments in your insulin doses. Ozempic isn't going to slow down the absorption of straight glucose. It has a bigger affect on digesting meals that contain fat and protein. Your usual treatments for lows will be just as effective.
But definitely work closely with your healthcare team to quickly reduce your insulin doses.
If you're prepared and careful, you shouldn't need to be so scared.
@@DiabetesNerd I really appreciate you responding and so fast that means a lot thank you! as always I will follow up with my doctor, but you did give me some immediate relief knowing that treating my lows with sugary sodas, or snacks will still be just as effective even if on ozempic. That was my biggest concern and what caused so much anxiety around me giving it a try. Knowing that even on ozempic if I hit a low and chug some juice my sugars would correct the same they would regardless helps me mentally A LOT.
