What a job. When was this canal constructed?

Erica Meehan. The canal was started in 1813 and finished in 1816. Was built to allow access from London to Portsmouth during the French wars. However, when completed the war was over! Railways saw its demise and it was abandoned on 1871 by an act of parliament. Will be a very pretty Route when completed as is passes through several woodland sites. About a 1/3 has been completed to date, although not in a continuous stretch. Approximately 30 miles in length, with the same number of locks and several bridges to rebuild. Standard locks and bridges costing approximately a million to rebuild it is not a cheep exercise!
