Q to my French brothers. In French do you call the HK416 'quatre cent seize' or e.g. 'quatre seize'? Also is there a nickname for it yet? e.g. Famas = clairon (bugle).
In "civilian" we call it quatre cent seize but i am sure that military call it with a short name. for the new Glocks, (new sidearm of french military) the description is PSA GLOCK (Pistolet Semi-Automatique)but i am sure they refer to it as "glock" for shotgun, FAP (yeah you can laugh as Fusil A Pompe) Where i work we have the hk ump9, and we call it "le Hk"
We pronounce it "HK quatre cent seize". Same way French people don't say "dix-neuf quatorze" to say nineteen-fourteen, they say "mille neuf-cent quatorze" as in nineteen-hundred & forty-two.
@mysticaccount5845 this I know. Am pretty fluent, pour un rosbif. But the military are famous for shortening names, to aid communication. As is the French informal language. One could drop the 'cent' and it still makes sense. HK is also sounding realistic in everyday use as there are no/few other HK products in the system. "Ash kah".
Thanks again, Matt. It would be interesting to hear the numbers of units using NATO standard calibers vs. old Soviet ones. Logistically, it would be bad to mix the two. With France having replaced the FAMAS in frontline use all the surplus riflea and former Ukrainian FL troops would likely use them. Ukrainians also use they own bullpup the Malyuk (in 5,45 soviet, 7,92 soviet and 5.56 Nato), based on the AK74 mechanism, first models was not realy optimised (bad selector positon for example), but the most advanced version is now realy good and is use by the Ukrainian special forces...
An absolute great firearm that has proven its worth in many battles and was ahead of its time back then. Unfortunately internal politics, the frenchs aversion to NATO and their inability to adapt has lead to its demise and subsequent replacement. Had the french a bit of foresight and updated the rifle to NATO standard (30rnd STANAG, brass cartridges, picantinny rails etc. ) it would still be around. They should have done what the croatians did with the HS VHS2, which ironically was developed as a replacement for all the Famas types. Truly a shame, especially now where gun design has stangnated and every nation just adopts soje form of M4 clone. I hope the ukrainians that use the Famas can atleast get some use out of it.
What's worse, is that they did have the G2 version that made it more NATO compatible but, aside from the French Marines, it didn't achieve widespread service. And putting flutes on the chamber was apparently an easy fix for the ammo problem but for some reason it was never implemented.
@@kutter_ttl6786 The reason why is pretty well known. The reason is the guns are nearly 50 years old and the company that made them ceased to exist 20 years ago.

The F1 is the earlier version of the FAMAS, with the proprietary mags. But Ukraine said, give them to us anyway. As you said, the HK416 is replacing the FAMAS in France, so I would suspect more STANAG compliant FAMAS will be going to Ukraine.
This isn't the Famas but an improvised version that someone ( probably the ukrainians ), the gap between the picatinny rail and the barrel block is much larger than in the video
This war will bring many interesting things into future. For example the war accelerated acception of sights into Russian army, people went from: -oh, Ivan, conscripts will break it to -a usable optics? Yeah please! Also interesting to see what happens with captured arms, I already saw that a lot of NATO rifles are taken into Chechen forces or into PMC groups (often the buy civilian versions and somehow transport it into Russia).
You would think there has to be some simple way to modify the gun to use regular ole STANAG mags so that way the proprietary ones would not be such a pain in the ass. The Croatian VHS-2 ought to be obtainable in that area. I have the civvy version of the VHS, the Springfield Hellion and I love that gun. The trigger isn't near as bad as other bullpup rifles.
There is. Theres a modification package to the FAMAS called the G2 that gives is a lower that takes STANAG magazines. They are, for french reason, quite rare.
@@lougrims The FAMAS G2 from the french Navy is not a kit but a specific version...Other versions still in service are F1 valorisés or similar, compatible to M16 magazines and Nato 5.56, older versions F1's are scrapped ...
Every since the end of the war France has had a stick up their backside about all things military. As far as I am aware, they went with those proprietary mags out of stubbornest as the most obvious solution would be to use the same mag as the rest of NATO
The FAMAS was designed for M193, BEFORE the adoption from the definitive Nato SS109 ammo, this is the real cause from this probleme, but the older Famas with proprietary magazines and steel cases are scraped or improved (new barell and magazine attachment) to be compatible with M16 type magazines (Famas valorisé, Felin or surbaissé) or Stanag curved magazines (Famas G2)
We use Famas since the 70’s, when Germans used G3, Italians the BM59, Brits the FAL…. Nobody used stanag mags in EU 50 years ago, because there were probably NO stanag mags during this period.
I would be interested to know how the Ukrainian military decides decides which regiments are distributed with foreign weapons. I would also be interested to know which rifle the majority of the soldiers prefer to use. I've just recently come across a Ukrainian RUclipsr. He seems to have access to all kinds of weapons. On his latest rifle video, he claims the SCAR-L is the best rifle so far. He prefers this rifle over the AK-74, Bren 2, and Daniel Defence. I'm quite surprised considering the The SCAR-L's reputation is not very well received
Doesn't surprise me that many nations upgrading to new weapons systems would be "gifting" it's old armament to Ukraine and similar countries that they want to build good will with. With Ukraine however, they seem to have a zillion different small arms of all eras and calibers right now. I'm sure they're happy to have whatever they can get their hands on, but I can't imagine how much of a logistical nightmare that must be in regards to ammunition, spare parts, etc..
I'm starting to believe that this influx of so many different kinds of weapons, along with this conflict, will create a gun culture in Ukraine similar to that in the US.

I talked with a guy that served in the soviet army during the afghan war, I am pretty much sure he would say that ten mags are nothing. Also saw a video of a Russian that fought in the early stages of the war, he said that soldiers would often use dozens of under-barrel grandes, hand grenades, and hundreds of bullets in one fight. The soldier stated that he used around 12-14 hand grenades and one RShG (РШГ) to clear a house, and they would clear dozens of them as a unit....
Makes sense that the FAMAS was shown in the hands of soldiers that would not be expected to see intense firefights. The limitations of the magazine matter less for mortar crews or intelligence units that are not expected to find themselves under sustained rifle fire.
You have your law makers to blame for that one, especially this administration. There’s maybe 400 FAMAS’s in the US and they call for a hefty price when found. The FAMAS is probably to expensive overall to be their standard issue post-war. BUT it is a good firearm in some situations, such as driver pdw for vehicles, or rear-line guard duty.
The FAL, a full-blown battle rifle, good as a PDW? I served in the mechanised infantry, and it was a pain getting in and out of IFVs with that big lug. You must mean the FAMAS. Not exactly a PDW either, but a big improvement over the FAL.

One of my favorite rifles. Got to test an F1 and F2 when doing disaster relief security. I love the bipod. The rifle can just stand on its own, letting me get out from behind it and leave it in position like it was a placed machine gun. Also lets me put the rifle down on the ground without dumping it in the dirt. I looked into US production. No cooperation with the data package. Did a lot of napkin math. Nice, that's what I think about every time I see a famas or socom since 1998 when I was 8. And a stinger for that matter. 1 of best video games ever.
Q to my French brothers. In French do you call the HK416 'quatre cent seize' or e.g. 'quatre seize'? Also is there a nickname for it yet? e.g. Famas = clairon (bugle).
In "civilian" we call it quatre cent seize but i am sure that military call it with a short name.
for the new Glocks, (new sidearm of french military) the description is PSA GLOCK (Pistolet Semi-Automatique)but i am sure they refer to it as "glock" for shotgun, FAP (yeah you can laugh as Fusil A Pompe)
Where i work we have the hk ump9, and we call it "le Hk"
@@hrldp4394 merci pour la réponse intéressante.
Just HK
I'd imagine the armorers face significant challenges. Also, do you happen to know the mix of calibers for the Malyuks? Your previous vid is two years on now.
I always wanted to fire one of these on the range. They look very cool, and they started my weird obession/adoration of NATO standard 5.56mm bullpup rifles.
Thanks man, really interesting episode. Its amazing to see the range of rifles being used.
Edit oh I didn't know about the lower power round. And you know I love me an ss109.
It IS possible to adapt FAMAS to use STANAG, if memory serves. FAMAS G2 is one such rifle which French navy uses. Wonder if anyone in Ukrainian industry bothered to look into it.
For 1,000 rifles, probably not. Thanks for watching!

Ditching these in favour of HK416 was a crime
The Best FAMAS was the G2, i did use it in the frnech Navy and realy like it, but objectively, for me, the best bullpup on the market today is the Thales F90 MBR, a evolution from the Steyr AUG who appears ~in same time as the FAMAS in the 70's...The F90 was adopted from the Australian army after the previous version F88
@@leneanderthalien People say the reason for losing the FAMAS was the loss of production capacity, but if Thales can build a perfectly good rifle, I don't understand / The Russo-Ukraine war shows the necessity of being able to build for yourself when you can't rely on imports.
@@WanderlustZero Globalists are trying to defeat us from within. The US has lost most of our chemical plants due to the EPA so most of our ammo primers and gunpowder actually comes from South America.
Just a note, a lot of Ukrainians serve(d) in the French Foreign Legion so no doubt they would be familiar with the FAMAS. With France having replaced the FAMAS in frontline use all the surplus riflea and former Ukrainian FL troops would likely use them. Furthermore the French said something about deploying French troops to Ukraine but they are probably Ukrainians who earned French citizenship after the five year probation period.
Do you know if the VHS2 is currently being used in Ukraine as well?
Helghast bought them all :(
ive seen a few pics of them in ukraine but not in any large numbers
I was wondering a similar question: has Italy offered AR70/90 to Ukraine since it has recently adopted the ARX160?
Hey thanks for the video. Do you have the name of the channel that showcased the FAMAS with the acog?
Hk416 > baguettemas
What's worse, is that they did have the G2 version that made it more NATO compatible but, aside from the French Marines, it didn't achieve widespread service. And putting flutes on the chamber was apparently an easy fix for the ammo problem but for some reason it was never implemented.
@@kutter_ttl6786 The reason why is pretty well known. The reason is the guns are nearly 50 years old and the company that made them ceased to exist 20 years ago.

It’s a famas valorisé. The French updated some f1 rifles to add rails.
This war will bring many interesting things into future. For example the war accelerated acception of sights into Russian army, people went from:
-oh, Ivan, conscripts will break it to
-a usable optics?
The French Navy had a kit for that but IIRC it was quite rare.
@@lougrims The FAMAS G2 from the french Navy is not a kit but a specific version...Other versions still in service are F1 valorisés or similar, compatible to M16 magazines and Nato 5.56, older versions F1's are scrapped ...
Man what the hell was France thinking with those proprietary magazines they're literally right smack in the middle of NATO countries
The French copy no one and no one copies the French
Every since the end of the war France has had a stick up their backside about all things military. As far as I am aware, they went with those proprietary mags out of stubbornest as the most obvious solution would be to use the same mag as the rest of NATO
The French are stupid when it comes to weapons design.

Doesn't surprise me that many nations upgrading to new weapons systems would be "gifting" it's old armament to Ukraine and similar countries that they want to build good will with. With Ukraine however, they seem to have a zillion different small arms of all eras and calibers right now.

It isn't a G2, it's an F1 Valorise which didn't add the mag conversion.
So cool. They should issue ten magazines with each rifle, its really hard to run out of ammo if you have ten mags
I've seen soldiers go through 10 mags in an hour or two in an actual gunfight. Having to reload using boxed ammunition is a royal PITA

As an American, I would like a FAMAS. Are we not a friendly nation? Is our Government OF the people? The people demand FAMAS.
You have your law makers to blame for that one, especially this administration. There’s maybe 400 FAMAS’s in the US and they call for a hefty price when found. I don’t know how to explain this simply, but we signed a threat, Non proliferation armes petit calibre, we don’t sell weapons to civilians, only state to state. That’s stupid indeed, we could sell a bunch of old Famas to US, instead of destroying them.

@Jesses001 one million only to reverse engineer the "data package"? Seriously? And what legal issues? Any patent that has been used is now a public domain. Moreover, since it was made in 1970, materials, tooling, and processes have improved a lot. Rather, take Solidworks blueprints and start from scratch for industrialization processes. Injection molds using up-to-date polymers for plastics. Lost wax microfusion for small and/or CNC for metalics parts. The real challenge is metal alloys formula and hardening heat treatment PLUS barrel dimensions since it's specifically tuned for cartridge.
