It's not just the rifling that limits the use of round. The recoil delay system itself is designed for the lower powered steel cartridge. Using the higher power SS109 rounds poses an increased danger of failure over time.
Ukraines logistic situation has to be a nightmare.
maybe, probably isn't that bad for small arms and ammo. Vehicles and tanks are probably harder to maintain
Arguably one of the worst in modern military history they have to call Germany USA uk to get spare parts for a broken tank or artillery piece and instructions. Then they have to convince Vietnam the next day to sell them Soviet ammunition.
@@rklkify I was gonna say most of the guns they are getting meet the NATO standard for ammo/mag so different housing but same ammo largely. Obvi there's a lot of exceptions to this. Just generalizing

The French naval FAMAS does use stanag mags. they did use the steel cased ammo originally because of the high pressure curve you get with a lever delayed blowback. it also has a fluted chamber for that same reason. They've changed the barrel and worked out the issues so firing brass cased ammo is fine
The F1 showed in the video is an earlier model and does not accept Stanag mags, don't know if they could be easily converted tho
Yep French navy FAMAS are the G2: reconizable with the gard from the pistol handle and can use curved STANAG 30 shot magazines, also M16 type ...
@@mrreziik the FAMAS whe see here is a F1 "valorisé", with a new barell adapted to NATO 5.56, but compatible only with M16 type magazine, only the G2 can use curved Stanag magazines
As much as Ukrainian logistics must be a fucking nightmare, I honestly think that it's a very precious learning opportunity for NATO logistics. From the get-go, the entire goal behind standardized interchangeable equipment like STANAG magazines, picatinny rail systems, 5.56 and 7.62 calibers, etc. was to make logistics simpler, especially even when faced with different member countries' varied weapon designs.
The Ukraine War is the true testing ground for NATO logistics that GWOT and joint military exercises could never be.
research the Coo that happened in Ukraine in 2014. The people of Eastern Ukraine voted to join Russia again and a few days after the vote passed a violent overthrow of the government and installation of a puppet leader prior to Zelinski happened. Then for almost 9 years they have been shelling the cities of Eastern Ukraine and have been killing civilians daily. Totalling almost 20,000 civilians in almost a decade. Putin had warned Western leaders for years to stop killing ethnic Russians there and encroaching on Russian territory but They Refused to abide by there own (Minsk accord) and Putin finally said enough is enough and started the Special Military Operation. You have been lied to by Corporate media your whole life.
NATO exercises, protocols and requirements are all compatible for ammunition, ordnance, magazines (STANAG) etc it's never been an issue and was proven decades ago. Ukraine is not NATO, hence it is no testing ground nor proof of concept. Afghanistan was.
If I recall correctly, when the FAMAS F1s went through the revalorisé process at Nexter Mechanics, they were re-barreled with 1/7" twist barrels made by Beretta

Nice, that's what I think about every time I see a famas or socom since 1998 when I was 8. And a stinger for that matter. 1 of best video games ever.
Man what the hell was France thinking with those proprietary magazines they're literally right smack in the middle of NATO countries
The French copy no one and no one copies the French
Every since the end of the war France has had a stick up their backside about all things military. As far as I am aware, they went with those proprietary mags out of stubbornest as the most obvious solution would be to use the same mag as the rest of NATO
The French are stupid when it comes to weapons design.
The FAMAS was designed for M193, BEFORE the adoption from the definitive Nato SS109 ammo, this is the real cause from this probleme, but the older Famas with proprietary magazines and steel cases are scraped or improved (new barell and magazine attachment) to be compatible with M16 type magazines (Famas valorisé, Felin or surbaissé) or Stanag curved magazines (Famas G2)
We use Famas since the 70’s, when Germans used G3, Italians the BM59, Brits the FAL…. Nobody used stanag mags in EU 50 years ago, because there were probably NO stanag mags during this period.
They'll probably end up armory oddities like the M14s & FALs due to the lack of magazines.
Really sucks that the FAL and M14 are oddities rn they’d both make killer DMRs
Shit the FAL can shoot some rifle grenades too I believe
Stanag work on Famas
FAL are largely used in Ukraine since they are still made by FN. A shit load of them have already been sent with good reputation
They've had M14s for a while. I forget why.

Ditching these in favour of HK416 was a crime
The Best FAMAS was the G2, i did use it in the frnech Navy and realy like it, but objectively, for me, the best bullpup on the market today is the Thales F90 MBR, a evolution from the Steyr AUG who appears ~in same time as the FAMAS in the 70's...The F90 was adopted from the Australian army after the previous version F88

As an American, I would like a FAMAS. Are we not a friendly nation? Is our Government OF the people? The people demand FAMAS.
You have your law makers to blame for that one, especially this administration. There’s maybe 400 FAMAS’s in the US and they call for a hefty price when found. After playing Ghost Recon and FEAR games as a kid, I always wanted the FAMAS or HK SL8. Hell, I’d quit my job and become a arms dealer to obtain a G11 or any rare gun.
@@mmmmburgerz9442 Man, if you could get a G11, you could quit your job and just live on what you could make selling it. I first learned about the G11 from Delta Force 2 way back in 2004-ish. My love of the FAMAS comes from Metal Gear Solid.
I don’t know how to explain this simply, but we signed a threat, Non proliferation armes petit calibre, we don’t sell weapons to civilians, only state to state. That’s stupid indeed, we could sell a bunch of old Famas to US, instead of destroying them.
Blame American importation laws.
I was wondering a similar question: has Italy offered AR70/90 to Ukraine since it has recently adopted the ARX160?
It IS possible to adapt FAMAS to use STANAG, if memory serves. FAMAS G2 is one such rifle which French navy uses. Wonder if anyone in Ukrainian industry bothered to look into it.

An absolute great firearm that has proven its worth in many battles and was ahead of its time back then. Unfortunately internal politics, the frenchs aversion to NATO and their inability to adapt has lead to its demise and subsequent replacement. Had the french a bit of foresight and updated the rifle to NATO standard (30rnd STANAG, brass cartridges, picantinny rails etc. ) it would still be around. They should have done what the croatians did with the HS VHS2, which ironically was developed as a replacement for all the Famas types. Truly a shame, especially now where gun design has stangnated and every nation just adopts soje form of M4 clone. I hope the ukrainians that use the Famas can atleast get some use out of it.
Hk416 > baguettemas
What's worse, is that they did have the G2 version that made it more NATO compatible but, aside from the French Marines, it didn't achieve widespread service. And putting flutes on the chamber was apparently an easy fix for the ammo problem but for some reason it was never implemented.
@@kutter_ttl6786 The reason why is pretty well known. The reason is the guns are nearly 50 years old and the company that made them ceased to exist 20 years ago.

That’s literally every war ever. Still need rifles.
I'm starting to believe that this influx of so many different kinds of weapons, along with this conflict, will create a gun culture in Ukraine similar to that in the US.
You would think there has to be some simple way to modify the gun to use regular ole STANAG mags so that way the proprietary ones would not be such a pain in the ass. The Croatian VHS-2 ought to be obtainable in that area. I have the civvy version of the VHS, the Springfield Hellion and I love that gun. The trigger isn't near as bad as other bullpup rifles.
There is. Theres a modification package to the FAMAS called the G2 that gives is a lower that takes STANAG magazines. They are, for french reason, quite rare.
The French Navy had a kit for that but IIRC it was quite rare.

Doesn't surprise me that many nations upgrading to new weapons systems would be "gifting" it's old armament to Ukraine and similar countries that they want to build good will with. With Ukraine however, they seem to have a zillion different small arms of all eras and calibers right now. I'm sure they're happy to have whatever they can get their hands on, but I can't imagine how much of a logistical nightmare that must be in regards to ammunition, spare parts, etc..
Thank you.
I would be interested to know how the Ukrainian military decides decides which regiments are distributed with foreign weapons. I would also be interested to know which rifle the majority of the soldiers prefer to use. I've just recently come across a Ukrainian RUclipsr. He seems to have access to all kinds of weapons. On his latest rifle video, he claims the SCAR-L is the best rifle so far. He prefers this rifle over the AK-74, Bren 2, and Daniel Defence.
