When choosing my new MINI the end of last year I drove a few combinations Cooper S, JCW, Cooper SD and Copper D. I decided on the Cooper D which shocked me! I traded in my mildly tuned R56 Cooper S which was obviously much faster made a much better noise. However, after 18,000 miles I love it! Has more torque than my old R56 Cooper S! On the motorway it flies. For a B road blast I’d always choose petrol but for everything else I’ve no regrets! You can still throw it around, hang the tail out with a dollop of lift off oversteer which brings just a big a smile to my face as my old one. Oh and I still have a R55 Clubman Cooper S... you know for when I need a little popping and banging in my life 😁
Petrol Ped You are most welcome. I suppose you can be forgiven for not agreeing that a Diesel MINI should wear the Copper badge! After all your channel is called Petrol Ped, not Diesel Ped 😉👍
Doesn't the newer Cooper S pipe engine sound through the sound system? Makes it sound like you're driving a more verbal car. Saw a video on this but not sure if it was try.
I own a diesel mini and it’s a yes from me. I’ve got a 2014 R55 Clubman Cooper D. As someone who does over 30,000 miles a year it’s the perfect daily. Small, practical, frugal and yet on a B road it really delivers the grins. I also have a 250 BHP R53 Cooper S and a well sorted MK3 MX5 and yet I still relish a drive in the diesel mini despite its stable mates offering objectively better drives.
Got a R56 Cooper D, saving for a R56 JCW N18 so no real point in remapping my Cooper D. I personally love it, i love the torque and how it's such a good motorway cruiser yet so good on the back roads.
How time flies by.... I bought my JCW, modified it and now it will be up for sale soon. Not for the reasons you think. It's so fun and everyday you get in, it just begs to be driven hard all the time.... and that's the problem. Let's just say I got caught allegedly doing almost double the speed limit by the local town paedophile in a camera van. And it's very very hard to drive my 280ish HP Mini sensibly, so i'm looking at calmer alternatives.
Its a yes from me. They handle fantastically well and the engine is punchy enough to make it interesting. People will probably also say should a Cooper be electric but it's a sign of the times and the company has to evolve with that whether we agree or not. The Cooper name will always be synonymous with handling and driving dynamics despite the powertrain.
I have to admit that even though I'm a pure MINI fan ( now on number 7), I was surprised at how good the diesel version really is. The only reason I would buy one is the fact that it does accomplish those mileage numbers. How do I know ? My neighbour & ex BMW work colleague drives one every day & constantly tells me just how good the fuel numbers are. The car has the same amount of room as any other F56, take the boot board out, tilt the back seats you get even more. Should it be called a Cooper ? Yes, why not. It's a brand now , not a model. Waiting for the flak, but I'm a big boy now (lol). Cheers Peter, another good one. Geof
i realise this is nearly 2 n half years old but having a mini cooper D 1.6 N47 engine London edition 2012 for just over 2 years now, the driving performance is brilliant and MPG is around 52-56 around town. Sport mode with a remap (139 bhp) once the car is at optimum temperature is about as fast as the cooper s of the time so very happy with the performance and zero road tax, whats not to like.
I've just rented automatic Cooper D five door for 2 weeks. Maybe it's my driving mood or the hot weather or it being a auto but i's been left in standard mode all the time and I'm finding it a really relaxing car to drive. Economy claim for auto is 72mpg, no where near is is the biggest lie for a diesel engine 48mpg but that has included evening( so not to busy) London driving and some hot weather Dartford bridge congestion. The worst and strangest feature of this hire car is that it comes with Michelin Energy 175 tyres on skinny 15 inch alloys. While they ride well, will probably last a long time, they squirm horribly in tight corners and the noise they make on concrete surfaces is horrendous. You get used to it but it's always there.
phew..im glad you have the same 48mpg as me.ive just replaced my front michelins as they were down to 3mm but i also changed the rears because they were 7 years old and would have lasted another 2 oh and one of em had a slow puncture, but they do last well.
Hi Peter, I have driven and owned all 3 generations of the Diesel powered Minis so R50, R56, and the latest F5x, 1.5 3 cylinder Cooper and the 2.0 4 cylinder diesel fitted to the clubman F54 Cooper diesel. On average the new car returns 62mpg real driving. The older diesel in my humble opinion always lacked the punch even the R58 2.0 SD I owned was quick and economical but lacked that low down grunt that my recently returned F54 clubman did. I plan to try either a F56 Cooper SD or the F54 Cooper SD as soon as I see them available on our list of cars. Top channel by the way some honest reviews keep up the good work,
Hi Tony. Thanks for the info. I love hearing from owners about their experience and actually what it's like living with the cars I am reviewing. Cheers. Ped.
bought a 2013 model one D 1.6 90hp, did a stage 1 tune on it, now it got 147hp (not dynoed) it flies, easily 215 km/h and it shaved of 0-100 from over 11 seconds to 7.9, its incredibly impressive! works amazing both for highway and backroads, also it uses less fuel with stage 1, i have a supercharged M5 e39 so im used to fast cars (600hp) but the mini impresses me every time i drive it, always makes me smile, also very easy to wrench on ☺️
I own a SD that has been remapped to 199bhp. And i can say its a great drive and great fun, but still giving me 50mpg so its a must for me as i drive lots of miles each month. Great video!
I'm going with yes. It sounds from what you have said that it sort of catches the spirit of what the Mini Cooper is. It's got style and it's quick for a little diesel daily. I like to redline myself but hey it's worth a look.
I changed my petrol Cooper R50 for a Cooper D R56 2012 London and best decision I ever made. Love driving this car, fully loaded and enjoy driving again. I can guarantee it will not do anywhere near the mpg, maybe high 50's, no where near the 80's. Did like the video, but maybe you need to do a yes or no video on if the Mini should wear the Cooper badge. I'm typing this while watching video and you just asked my question. Great minds think alike. My personal opinion No.....they just smoked the badge on every other car. Its not earned it. Well not all have.
It's a good car. I previously hated diesels as I'm a noise boy but the thing is really surprising with the handling and the low down punch is actually more useful for general motoring. I still hate running out of push at 4000rpm but I've my gixxer for the 14000rpm fun and screaming engine noise.
Good review - for a diesel they are about as good as they get, but unless I did monster miles (or wasn’t a ‘driver’) then I wouldn’t buy any diesel - and in this market, I’d only lease a diesel in case the market absolutely falls apart. I think it’s ok calling it a Cooper, bearing in mind it’s actually only a trim level these days, just like you get diesel M Sports, and AMG’s and GTD’s ..
I have a 2010 Cooper D R56- no it's not a Cooper S but the fuel economy is great. I followed your advice, ditched the run flats and got a completely different car. The Cooer D still has go-kart handling just not the petrol performance
I think these days the Cooper name is more to do with trim level than engine power. If I’m right, if you had and original Mini Cooper you knew it had the Cooper tuned 1.3L engine. I might be wrong but I assume BMW use the Cooper name for a bit more sporty styling but it’ll have the same engine as the Mini One?
As a somebody who drives a hulking great old diesel landrover as my daily, I can't wait til diesel fucks off. Even filling them up, the pump handle is always stinking. Roll on the electric JCW.
2013 cooper D auto has the 2 litre engine of the SD. it remaps from 110 bhp to 180 bhp. 0 to 60 was just under 10 seconds, now its just under 7 seconds!
It wouldn’t be my first choice but if you need an economical diesel, I don’t see why you should be denied a fun sporty car. In my experience the diesel engines seem to be more reliable too… My wife has an R56 Mini One Diesel. It’s now done over 123k miles without a single problem! In contrast the petrol Cooper S seems to be plagued with reliability issues. It is also tax exempt, averages 60mpg and thumps you out of corners with an unexpected 159lbs ft of torque.
Hi there Pete, just seen this video. Should a Diesel be called a COOPER. Oh hell yah, you get Ruby against my Laddie (Cooper D) and in five laps I’ll beat yah lol, HAVE IT 💋
They used Diesel engines in Indianapolis 500 cars a while back. Of course the displacement was a big bigger, a lot more torque...What about the different levels of Coopers, S and JCW...I know the difference is mostly under the car, but what the heck, it may prove something to some one....
Cool video. I am a Cooper S owner. I am Ok with a diesel variant. I am a former owner of a diesel Audi A3 that was part of the U.S. emissions settelment. Audi had to buy back my car at the pre-scandal price plus pay me a $7,000 penalty. No brainer. I took the deal and bought my Mini with cash. Audi diesel was a great car. I am curious about the S version of the Mini diesel. What is the HP? Review please.
Maybe twice the fuel economy but not twice the fun factor 👍 still a good review Thanks for that one Peter. Think I will keep my Cooper S Supercharged 220hp You need to come and review it one day 👍🏁
Does not deserve the Cooper name in my opinion Pete. Diesel, 3 Cylinders, narrow torque band. No fun. Luke warm !!! Enjoyed the review though. Petrol new Mini or even better a classic Cooper!!👍
I love my diesel Fabia (yes its diesel gate) but I have it on a remap and its a nippy little car! The torque and economy is amazing as I do a lot of miles it was a no brainer!! The mini diesels are great units!! Like others mentioned the cooper is just a trim level and its a shame the cooper name has been lost. Lots of sport versions of cars come with diesels now. Also the mk1 skoda fabia vrs only came with a 1.9tdi!
Yes, I believe the cooper name is valid, it is a sporty version, no doubt. Don't judge it, if you haven't driven it! Good fun, mini character, but can also be daily commuter. Hence a car for every one, as the original was designed to be!
You get 40mpg from your JCW Coupe?? How slow are you driving? I've got an R56 2007 Cooper S and I manage mid 30's at best. Might be down to having a heavy right foot though and always driving the Cooper S in "sports" mode. In "normal" mode, it feels sluggish. As for buying a Cooper D. Err.... Nope. Diesel cars are (Supposedly!) on the way out anyway due to their pollution and my Cooper S would kill it performance wise. Plus it sounds loads better too with bangs and pops when down changing :-)
I get 42 average out of my 2014 R58 (JCW Coupe). I don't drive mine with lambswool slippers, I just use the gear box to obtain maximum power & fuel economy. I had a 2005 super charged Cooper S hatch & no matter how I drove it I could never better 23mpg. Sometimes when I really gave it the beans it was nearer 18 mpg. Really miss the sound of the blower whistling from under the bonnet, don't miss the bloody uncomfortable, saggy drivers seat though !!
I totally get it also, and I suspect BMW sell more giving the car the 'Cooper' tag. Thanks but not for me, I'll stick with my uneconomical but brilliant fun petrol hyper blue R53 JCW 'S'.
Good Question. Remember the Cooper S was the race/rally one, but agree with you that BMW have lost the plot. A Mini One Diesel ok, but for me, that is where it ends. I understand the UK Govenment have done an about turn on diesel, so it will be on its way out, but an electric one will be on its way. Maybe a Mini One Electric is ok, and should be where the Mini One spec should go.
Hi their recently in the news they say after 2040 There will be no more petrol or diesel cars What’s your opinion on this Please reply or even make a video
It is a goal that has been set but I'm not sure it has been thought through. Two problems for me. If all cars go electric where does the power come from, and if you are the government where does the fuel excise duty come from. I think we need to put far more work into Hydrogen fuel cell technology.
@@PetrolPed Totally agree- people forget where the power from their plug is generated. We have a missing link between renewable generation and usage. I'd like to see investment in home solar storage- collect it all day and plug the car in at night.
I think a more pertinent question would be should this bloated leviathan be allowed to be called a Mini? I recently found myself behind one of these monstrosities and was staggered at not only its bulk but also its eye watering ugliness. Great review though buddy!
Nice 👍 vid! The Cooper SD is a much better beast by all accounts..0-60 in 7 secs and loads of torque with a better 50-75mph time in 4th than a petrol S!!
for that mileage, i would personally recommend the mini with the PSA engine in. i had one which, once it was sorted out from the last owners lack of maintenance shall we say, i averaged 64-68 mpg. so yeah if you still after one, go for it and should be cheap as nowadays.
Well they put Diesel engines in Maserati’s now so anything goes now I guess. The writing was on the wall when they started putting diesels in roadsters like the SLK and other convertibles like the Alfa spider, who wants a tractor engine in a sportscar? Ugh!
Nonsense move to fit this car with a Diesel engine. Shocking idea and glad to see the tide is turning on why we're so into economy over refinement. Stick to Petrol power!
What can I say? It's a travesty and an abomination! :¬D :¬p My mum owned 3 different BMC Minis during one particular decade waaaay back. a Mk1 850, Mk2 1000, and a Clubman 1000. And I've owned a couple myself, a 1340 tuned monster back in the 90s and a bog standard and rather rusty Mini City about 10 years ago, cos it was going cheap. And if you really want to know how I feel about the late shape Mini, read the first line. I do understand that they have achieved something in the handling department, but that will never ameliorate the appearance of the thing. (Just as a by the way, yours looks like a baseball cap with wheels.) ;¬)
The classic Mini Cooper was voted in the top five driver's cars of all time by British motoring journalists just a few years ago. Grab a chance to drive one down a properly twisty road if it ever comes up! It's a real eye opener and will have you grinning like a fool. :¬D
Hi Richard. Rev Matching is basically the car 'heel and Toeing ' for you. As you change down the car revs the engine to bring the RPM up to the same speed as the incoming new gear. This means the gear change is far smoother, you don't upset the balance of the car and you are able to get into the lower gear earlier and therefore improve engine braking. You can do it yourself but braking and revving at the same time.
Does it really matter? It’s only a BMW MINI. It’s not a sports car or even faithful to the original. I guess though, in the world of mini purists (ignoring the fact it’s now a giant German car) a diesel Cooper is historically sacrilegious. The choice is not to buy it. Free market and all that :)
It's a good point you make but I asked the question to see what people think and it's probably had more comments and points of view than any video I done certainly got people talking ;-)
The big push for diesels in the UK actually came from its growth area of Europe. So yet another reason to have voted Brexit then.lol Remember Governments are advised by the automotive industry and scientists, so a good sales job that got found out ,may be a little late for some people.
Yep it’s is a Dooper….with a stage 1 remap these are good for 145bhp….and more importantly another 80Nm of Torque so 360!!! …. Really does fly!!! £299 money well spent …. Better than a man SD and a Cooper petrol and great economy!!!!
Really? I can get over 750 miles from a tank in my 320D. A 320i would get a maximum of 500 miles from a tank. My car is just fast as the 320i, but uses a lot less fuel and is far cheaper run. Why on earth would I want the 320i? I'm not a boy racer, I'm a family man who doesn't have money to waste by spending 40% more every month on fuel. There's nothing special about run of the mill petrol engined cars.
Having just become the proud owner of one of these I can honestly say I am very, very happy with it.
Congrats 👍

Has more torque than my old R56 Cooper S! On the motorway it flies.
For a B road blast I’d always choose petrol but for everything else I’ve no regrets!
You can still throw it around, hang the tail out with a dollop of lift off oversteer which brings just a big a smile to my face as my old one.

The diesel is amazing. Put it in Sport mode and the power is really fun. Most fun car you can get with the fantastic mpg figure.
Yep, very impressive :-)
Does sport mode not effect fuel efficiency though?

I had a 2005 super charged Cooper S hatch & no matter how I drove it I could never better 23mpg. Sometimes when I really gave it the beans it was nearer 18 mpg. Really miss the sound of the blower whistling from under the bonnet, don't miss the bloody uncomfortable, saggy drivers seat though !!
2.0 diesel SD yes Cooper . smaller engine diesel NO. Cooper is performance over economy
I JUST BOAT A COOPER URBAN IN TEL AVIV 2018 AFTER FACE LIFTING. HOPE TO ENJOY IT🤔
You will love it :-)
Petrol Ped woww tnx mate love from Tel Aviv City
Another informative and enjoyable review. I thought the engine sounded quite good. Should it be called a Cooper, yes; just.
Those black stripes look bloody awful on a deep blue car.
I totally get it also, and I suspect BMW sell more giving the car the 'Cooper' tag. Thanks but not for me, I'll stick with my uneconomical but brilliant fun petrol hyper blue R53 JCW 'S'.
Sounds like my kinda car Pablo :-)
But you could also ask should a cooper be a cabriolet ?
Very true :-)
Good Question.
Remember the Cooper S was the race/rally one, but agree with you that BMW have lost the plot. A Mini One Diesel ok, but for me, that is where it ends. I understand the UK Govenment have done an about turn on diesel, so it will be on its way out, but an electric one will be on its way. Maybe a Mini One Electric is ok, and should be where the Mini One spec should go.
Not for me. Still love my 2013 Cooper, 3 door petrol. And no desire to change it.
It should be called “mini D”
I agree !
If that's what you want, there is the ONE D
Hi their recently in the news they say after 2040 There will be no more petrol or diesel cars
What’s your opinion on this
Please reply or even make a video
It is a goal that has been set but I'm not sure it has been thought through. Two problems for me. If all cars go electric where does the power come from, and if you are the government where does the fuel excise duty come from. I think we need to put far more work into Hydrogen fuel cell technology.
@@PetrolPed Totally agree- people forget where the power from their plug is generated. We have a missing link between renewable generation and usage. I'd like to see investment in home solar storage- collect it all day and plug the car in at night.
Done well.
I think a more pertinent question would be should this bloated leviathan be allowed to be called a Mini? I recently found myself behind one of these monstrosities and was staggered at not only its bulk but also its eye watering ugliness. Great review though buddy!
You're not a Mini fan then Nick ;-)
I've had 4 minis coming up for my 5th never had a diesel not for me always 3 door option don't like any of the others
I have one in real life, and it's blue with white stripes!
I owned one a couple of years ago, would never buy another Mini as they depreciate like a stone, the market is flooded with them.
They are pretty common :-(
YES
Nice 👍 vid! The Cooper SD is a much better beast by all accounts..0-60 in 7 secs and loads of torque with a better 50-75mph time in 4th than a petrol S!!
I drive 20000 km at year, so yes I want a diesel mini
for that mileage, i would personally recommend the mini with the PSA engine in. i had one which, once it was sorted out from the last owners lack of maintenance shall we say, i averaged 64-68 mpg. so yeah if you still after one, go for it and should be cheap as nowadays.
Well they put Diesel engines in Maserati’s now so anything goes now I guess. The writing was on the wall when they started putting diesels in roadsters like the SLK and other convertibles like the Alfa spider, who wants a tractor engine in a sportscar? Ugh!
I know what you mean. I remember when the diesel TT came out...err not for me :-(
CANT BEAT THE PETROL COOPER S
Nonsense move to fit this car with a Diesel engine. Shocking idea and glad to see the tide is turning on why we're so into economy over refinement. Stick to Petrol power!
What can I say? It's a travesty and an abomination! :¬D :¬p
My mum owned 3 different BMC Minis during one particular decade waaaay back. a Mk1 850, Mk2 1000, and a Clubman 1000.
A mini is hardly a Porsche or Ferrari. There is nothing special about this chunky BMW MINI.
Tell that to Pedro!
The classic Mini Cooper was voted in the top five driver's cars of all time by British motoring journalists just a few years ago. Grab a chance to drive one down a properly twisty road if it ever comes up! It's a real eye opener and will have you grinning like a fool. :¬D
Baseball Cap with wheel ?! That was actually part of the design language for the Coupe ;-)
I am a Classic Mini fan too and appreciate them both.
Hahah! Now you mention it, I seem to recall reading about that detail too.
Its shouldnt be called a mini so calling it a cooper diesel or not makes no difference. Whats Rev match? Excuse my ignorance.
Yes but it should never be allowed to be electric. Electric is a lie. Oh, well, they just announced the Cooper Electric, there goes my brand loyalty.
The new E Mini is a superb car. 60,000 people already registered interest. I think it will do really well for the brand 👍
The US sucks and has left this out of our markets. I would love to own one
So yet another reason to have voted Brexit then.lol
Remember Governments are advised by the automotive industry and scientists, so a good sales job that got found out ,may be a little late for some people.
Ps think bigger diesel better.
Its a Dooper.
Yep it’s is a Dooper….with a stage 1 remap these are good for 145bhp….and more importantly another 80Nm of Torque so 360!!! …. Really does fly!!! £299 money well spent …. Better than a man SD and a Cooper petrol and great economy!!!!
The question is, should the F models be allowed? Damn Fugly.
Great car …. Retains all the mini character, plus great economy and up to date tech … plus actually caries 4 adults 🇬🇧🤷🏻♂️
The only things that should be diesel are agricultural machinery 😂
There's nothing special about run of the mill petrol engined cars.
stubones They say diesel is worse for the environment now and petrol is better. Also diesel is the same price as petrol now.
Light the blue touch paper and retire to a safe distance !!!!
Being automatic is worse
No
No.
Short but sweet :-)
That car is HUUUUUUGEEE. Its bigger than a MK5 golf now.
They are not mini anymore :-)
Stinking Diesels!
First
Francois G 🎉
stubones Thank you 😊😊
Another informative and enjoyable review. I thought the engine sounded quite good. Should it be called a Cooper, yes; just.
No.
Short and to the point !
