I remember playing this game in a really low moment of my life... Kicked out of the house at age 18, sitting in an obscure little one-room flat in a shitty neighbourhood, broke up with girlfriend... On dark, rainy nights i was just firing up this game, loaded a mission in China and listened to "Streets of Hong Kong" track for hours, smoking up one cig after another. Really bad times... loved the game tho, beat it about 5 times.
Its amazing how these small moments in our lives can become memories when we grow up. Personally i have so many memories with videogames and hitman contracts is one of them. I come back here listen to the amazing soundtrack whenever i feel like i miss my childhood.
James Rustles Silent Assassin had no story, same as any other Hitman game except Absolution. You get two missions that explain why you need to do a bunch of contracts, do a bunch of contracts, and then the story picks up directly from the beginning in the last 1-2 missions.
Yeah without a doubt the music played a big part in contributing to the overall creepiness. Jesper Kyd's talent is so underappreciated that guy is a master at what he does. There was just something about the overall atmosphere in Contracts that proved to be much darker than any of the other games...

Couldn't agree with you more. I think I read on the Hitman wiki that it's raining in all of the missions because it represents 47's foggy memory/confusion about these past hits. When I read that my mind was blown and I was just like holy shit that makes perfect sense! Amazing game, still playing it to this day.
Contracts and the original game have the best soundtracks of the series. I do prefer the original Hong Kong theme music over the one in Contracts. So atmospheric.

33:00 Winter Night, plays in the mission Bjarkov Bombing. The mission you are in flat out barren artic cold of Siberia no daylight with the moon over you. That mission gives me goosebumps

I've listened to this music off game ever since I was a teenager, back in the 00s. I've always felt like a weirdo for doing so, because it's so dark and brooding, and not at all what people around me usually listen. It's nice to see so many other people here in the comments find this soundtrack brilliant.
Installments in the series like "Blood Money", "Silent Assassin" and "Absolution" work so well because they have a bit of a colorful, adventurous (sometimes darkly humorous) tone. For a murky game to play on cold and stormy night, however, "Contracts" is hard to beat...and this score has a lot to do with that.
Contracts has the best atmosphere out of the other games in the series in my opinion. The dark and gritty tone fits 47 and what he is doing perfectly. I would love to see a return of that darkness in the next game...

Nikitoz9595 not true. The ambiance is meant to contrast the environment. It's supposed to reppresent 47's mental state and mood, obviously it would be weird to hear creepy and dark tones in a sunny resort like Sapienza, and that's why it would work. You should feel out of place.

Slaughterhouse + " 47 Detected " are awesome tracks. i wish music composer for upcoming new hitman game ( 2016 ) was Jesper Kyd :(( . music style matches game mood and attitude. these track are really good and well done

I prefer the old Hitman games, but that's obviously not true. Absolution is not that "positive"... Yes, there are a lot of funny conversations and stuff like that, but the main problem is not the game's atmosphere but the fact that people who played the previous Hitman games can only enjoy purist or expert difficulty :) (I agree with your first sentence, this game is amazingly creepy sometimes)

I still remember when I was young, playing through Blood Money, it was way more light-hearted than Contracts. Then I installed Contracts (I have a Hitman 3 game pack, H2, H:Contracts and Blood Money) the prologue was confusing and eerie and then my God, the "meat party mission" as I used to call it xD Such a disturbing ambiance and atmosphere, made me feel so uneasy.

If I were a billionaire, I would totally pay EIDOS Interactice (Square Enix) so they make a whole Hitman Codename 47, Hitman 2 Silent Assassin and Blood Money with today's last generation graphics and with a last Gen game engine with larger better made maps that will make you spend ours in each mission, but without that bullshit gameplay of Absolution with that stupid instinct and that you can carry large unconcealable weapons inside your black hole pockets, take that out and we have a perfect billion making set of classic Hitman Games.

A very dark, gloomy and eerie soundtrack. Fit the game perfectly. Some tracks makes me think of the OST from "Full Metal Jacket" (the Kubrick movie), 90's Nine Inch Nails and Recoil, solo project from Alan Wilder, former member from Depeche Mode. My "greatest" memory from this game is the f*cking ghost in the "Budapest Hotel" mission. I played this game as a kid and it freaked me the hell out. Still the same nowadays; always a chill on my spine when I turn around the corner of this dark, windy hotel corridor...

Never played the original Hitman but SA, contracts and blood money were brilliant...up to 2016 its great but there was a misty darkness to contracts that they haven't been able to capture since regardless of innovative and creative game mechanics Still my favourite in the series
Absolution was the very first shock when it came to music, but the new ones are even worse. James Bond music, no brooding elements, music doesn't imply that you do gloomy stuff. It feels like saving the world from James Bond villains. No sexual undertones, no darker stuff involved.
This is like coming back home from a long trip only to find what was once good has turned bad. When you try and revisit certain places, they are dark empty and devoid of the life that once belonged!
The soundtracks are all beautifully composed. With it, it matched the dark tone Hitman Contract was going for, especially the soundtrack you hear during the first level (where you escape the Asylum) it gave me chills down my spine. Out of all the Hitman's this is my favourite one.
I found this game used for the PC at a Goodwill for like 3 bucks over a decade ago. I had no idea it even existed at the time. I'd only played Hitman 2 and Blood Money, so I wondered where this fit into the series. Needless to say I was extremely impressed by it, and it remains my favorite in the series. Blood Money is damn fun, but you just can't beat the feel and atmosphere of Contracts.
0:33 is still my fav of all themes of contracts by far! They catched the feelings and scenario so well waiting in a dark rainyy night for his target while looking out of the window in the menu.

I love Blood Money but you can't top the tone of Contracts and music, just amazing. I love this concept that 47 is an amoral predator in the midst of evil. Blood Money did a good job of capturing a hint of supernatural by just the existence of evil that contracts really hit hard. Anyway you can feel all of that in this music. Incredible Jesper Kyd.
Sometimes at night i put on a black suit, red tie and black leather gloves(i am also bald) , i put a headphone in one of my ears while playing 23:02 and than just walk around the city, take public transport, enter bars and even go into the bathroom and not piss. People get so scared when i happen to walk near them.

I have played all the hitman games. Agent 47 was decent to me. Silent assassin had a really great story line. Contracts is just overall the best one to be. Blood money has amazing gameplay. Absolution is up there with contracts.
Cheese McGee A lot of Absolutions maps were linear and far too story driven, load-outs and purchases are not available which basically means that your hard earned cash is just a score and that you can't prepare for your future hits. Not forgetting that that shitty scoring system replaced the newspapers from blood money, which was an immersive scoring system that also told some of the story. Aside from the graphics and new game mechanics (instinct, athletics) absolution isn't particularly good, it's actually pretty "meh". .....And bad characterisation of 47. .......Also too many cutscenes. 1. Blood$$ (good maps, newspapers, cash bonuses, purchases, load-outs, story) 2. Contracts (atmosphere, soundtrack, good maps, story) 3.Absolution (instinct, athletics, story) 4. Silent assasin and Codename47, didn't play them but i know that the gameplay and ai is inferior.

47 a clandestine superior genetic multiracial Caucasian like clone but the unique chosen one. Who has stealthy cunning manoeuvres with decision and kills like a work of art. Only he has Baller 45. ACP handguns with a custom logo which are exclusive to Agent 47. He was the chosen one because he was the only clone out of his brothers from the Series that had conscious thoughts.
Definitely has the best atmosphere in the series. It's probably the best game in the series if we're objectively looking at things, because there's not a single mediocre mission to be found here, as compared to Silent Assassin (which had Tunnel Rat and At the Gates for example) and Blood Money (the tutorial mission is too slow, and Death on Mississippi overstays its welcome among other things). Won't even mention the first game and...THAT game from 2012.
when i was like 10 or 11 i remember my cousin brought me random two games : hitman 2 silent assassin and contracts. i didn't understand a thing that happened but i still loved the game so much. i never finished the first mission but played it for hours and hours. now im 16 and i got some free time during quarantine, had the best idea to relaunch this game and finish it for real this time. TOP NOTCH gameplay and music.
I have a theory as to why this game was the game with most creepiest atmosphere and soundtrack, as well as why you see the ghost. It all takes place in 47s dream, as flashbacks, and remember dreams or seeing them as flashbacks wouldn't be 100% like they happened, mixed in with dreams which includes the subconscious, and the in-humane things 47 has seen in his life (and done) would create a nightmarish picture that he sees, and in such we see the same. The ghost could be a subconscious hint on what direction 47 should go in his life, as well as say where the player needs to go.
Excellent analysis. I believe the dark foreboding aspect was really a subconscious exaggeration of the human mind. In a way it brought a whole new level of seriousness to the original levels from Codename 47 that were otherwise quite sanitized.
The second one was good. But man this one was a beast. It's definitely my favourite one in the series so far. I like the second but this one was my favourite. Man I love the soundtracks and the gameplay in this game. :) the slaughter theme is really scary and creepy. :)
The music made this game for me and definitely the darkest Hitman game in both the missions and music. I remember playing contracts when i was 8 and some of these tracks made me shit myself that my cover was going to be blown haha. This game is close to being a masterpiece, in my opinion, largely because of the atmosphere, tension, fair challenge, themes of digging deep into 47's complex mind and, of course, the MUSIC! 2 : Silent Assassin was amazing for its time, as well, but the gameplay is really dated now and the music in its Middle Eastern and Indian levels is a bit cheesy. Blood Money was fun and had the most solid, fluid gameplay of the original four but I actually feel as if it was too "Hollywood-ized" and in-your-face when it comes to the music and story with staged tension appearing more often. This, however, was balanced well enough and felt a lot more real, colder, grittier and more intense to play, to me.

They should be doing what capcom is doing, they should go back, look over what people initially liked and what was better, and just redo it all, start afresh but make it a REAL hitman game. Entirely nerw and different engine. Keep the pacing and overall progression like the 2nd game was. Keep the reason for doing the missions like codename 47 and blood money, make it about the CONTRACTS. Hitman contracts atmosphere needs to be duplicated somehow. I think this would be a good basis for a solid hitman game.
Exactly the Hitman games in general could not provide the player with the full experience without Jesper's composition and I think Contracts showed was him at his very best out of the series

I loved the gameplay of Absolution (meaning the movements such as hiding, strangling, disguises, distractions etc) but what the game lacked overall was the EXPERIENCE of playing a Hitman game!!! When I play the Hitman series I want to TRAVEL AROUND THE WORLD (russia, china, columbia, middleast, beverly hills, africa, and definitely europe), performing assassinations on high level drug lords, corrupt politicians, sex slave traders, aka bad people!!! Not roam around the desert in fuckin south dakota lol! Oh and I want to be an actual HITMAN again working for an agency or any other rich clients whom are in need of a silent assassin and getting paid six figures for it! Basically I want it to be like a 007 plot except being a straight up hitman. All those traits I listed above made the Hitman series so enjoyable imo. Not to mention disguises, characters, silenced weapons, and just playing as 47!!! Along with Jesper Kyd aka the greatest video game composer of all time !(who was not in absolution unfortunately) I I am extremely passionate about the Hitman series and was sad to see a game with so much potential turn out the way it did. I did like it a lot but it could have been a 11/10 with the right ideas that is my main point. Anyways I like what you said and fear we may never see a real hitman game again...

Nikitoz9595 not true. The ambiance is meant to contrast the environment. It's supposed to reppresent 47's mental state and mood, obviously it would be weird to hear creepy and dark tones in a sunny resort like Sapienza, and that's why it would work. You should feel out of place.

Hitman Contracts probably has the best promotional art of any game ever.
The Silent Assassin/Contracts Hitman style is impeccable: it represents Agent 47 as the true evil product of genetic modification, he looks sinister, like a messenger of death.
The atmosphere in this game is like a horror movie.
The atmosphere in Absolution is like a pink unicorn crossing the blue sky....
I prefer the old Hitman games, but that's obviously not true. Absolution is not that "positive"... Yes, there are a lot of funny conversations and stuff like that, but the main problem is not the game's atmosphere but the fact that people who played the previous Hitman games can only enjoy purist or expert difficulty :) (I agree with your first sentence, this game is amazingly creepy sometimes)

I still remember when I was young, playing through Blood Money, it was way more light-hearted than Contracts. Then I installed Contracts (I have a Hitman 3 game pack, H2, H:Contracts and Blood Money) the prologue was confusing and eerie and then my God, the "meat party mission" as I used to call it xD Such a disturbing ambiance and atmosphere, made me feel so uneasy.

If I were a billionaire, I would totally pay EIDOS Interactice (Square Enix) so they make a whole Hitman Codename 47, Hitman 2 Silent Assassin and Blood Money with today's last generation graphics and with a last Gen game engine with larger better made maps that will make you spend ours in each mission, but without that bullshit gameplay of Absolution with that stupid instinct and that you can carry large unconcealable weapons inside your black hole pockets, take that out and we have a perfect billion making set of classic Hitman Games.

Some tracks makes me think of the OST from "Full Metal Jacket" (the Kubrick movie), 90's Nine Inch Nails and Recoil, solo project from Alan Wilder, former member from Depeche Mode.
My "greatest" memory from this game is the f*cking ghost in the "Budapest Hotel" mission. I played this game as a kid and it freaked me the hell out. Still the same nowadays; always a chill on my spine when I turn around the corner of this dark, windy hotel corridor...

What Hitman Contacts has in common with first Max Payne? This games are not horrors but in few moments can make you sleep with lights on.
This is my very personal favorite Hitman game, the atmosphere, the story, the soundtrack, it catch me like no other title at the time

Never played the original Hitman but SA, contracts and blood money were brilliant...up to 2016 its great but there was a misty darkness to contracts that they haven't been able to capture since regardless of innovative and creative game mechanics

Absolution was the very first shock when it came to music, but the new ones are even worse. James Bond music, no brooding elements, music doesn't imply that you do gloomy stuff. It feels like saving the world from James Bond villains. No sexual undertones, no darker stuff involved.

The soundtracks are all beautifully composed. With it, it matched the dark tone Hitman Contract was going for, especially the soundtrack you hear during the first level (where you escape the Asylum) it gave me chills down my spine. Out of all the Hitman's this is my favourite one.

I found this game used for the PC at a Goodwill for like 3 bucks over a decade ago. I had no idea it even existed at the time. I'd only played Hitman 2 and Blood Money, so I wondered where this fit into the series. Needless to say I was extremely impressed by it, and it remains my favorite in the series. Blood Money is damn fun, but you just can't beat the feel and atmosphere of Contracts.
0:33 is still my fav of all themes of contracts by far! They catched the feelings and scenario so well waiting in a dark rainyy night for his target while looking out of the window in the menu.

I love Blood Money but you can't top the tone of Contracts and music, just amazing. I love this concept that 47 is an amoral predator in the midst of evil. Blood Money did a good job of capturing a hint of supernatural by just the existence of evil that contracts really hit hard. Anyway you can feel all of that in this music. Incredible Jesper Kyd.
Sometimes at night i put on a black suit, red tie and black leather gloves(i am also bald) , i put a headphone in one of my ears while playing 23:02 and than just walk around the city, take public transport, enter bars and even go into the bathroom and not piss. People get so scared when i happen to walk near them.

Great soundtrack but by no means complete. Doesn't include Beldingford Manor, training room and Meat Kings Party (Ambience).... these are some of the most foreboding immersive tracks in the game.
I thought the new hitman games were so good there's no need to play the older titles, then Contracts assainated me with its atmosphere... so good.

Agent 47 was decent to me.
Silent assassin had a really great story line.
Contracts is just overall the best one to be.
Blood money has amazing gameplay.
Absolution is up there with contracts.
Cheese McGee A lot of Absolutions maps were linear and far too story driven, load-outs and purchases are not available which basically means that your hard earned cash is just a score and that you can't prepare for your future hits.
Not forgetting that that shitty scoring system replaced the newspapers from blood money, which was an immersive scoring system that also told some of the story.
Aside from the graphics and new game mechanics (instinct, athletics) absolution isn't particularly good, it's actually pretty "meh".

47 a clandestine superior genetic multiracial Caucasian like clone but the unique chosen one. Who has stealthy cunning manoeuvres with decision and kills like a work of art. Only he has Baller 45. ACP handguns with a custom logo which are exclusive to Agent 47. He was the chosen one because he was the only clone out of his brothers from the Series that had conscious thoughts.
Absolution was trash. Do not compare that crap sandwich to the masterpiece that Contracts is.
Definitely has the best atmosphere in the series. It's probably the best game in the series if we're objectively looking at things, because there's not a single mediocre mission to be found here, as compared to Silent Assassin (which had Tunnel Rat and At the Gates for example) and Blood Money (the tutorial mission is too slow, and Death on Mississippi overstays its welcome among other things). Won't even mention the first game and...THAT game from 2012.
when i was like 10 or 11 i remember my cousin brought me random two games : hitman 2 silent assassin and contracts. i didn't understand a thing that happened but i still loved the game so much. i never finished the first mission but played it for hours and hours. now im 16 and i got some free time during quarantine, had the best idea to relaunch this game and finish it for real this time. TOP NOTCH gameplay and music.
I have a theory as to why this game was the game with most creepiest atmosphere and soundtrack, as well as why you see the ghost.
It all takes place in 47s dream, as flashbacks, and remember dreams or seeing them as flashbacks wouldn't be 100% like they happened, mixed in with dreams which includes the subconscious, and the in-humane things 47 has seen in his life (and done) would create a nightmarish picture that he sees, and in such we see the same. The ghost could be a subconscious hint on what direction 47 should go in his life, as well as say where the player needs to go.
Excellent analysis. I believe the dark foreboding aspect was really a subconscious exaggeration of the human mind. In a way it brought a whole new level of seriousness to the original levels from Codename 47 that were otherwise quite sanitized.

The music made this game for me and definitely the darkest Hitman game in both the missions and music. I remember playing contracts when i was 8 and some of these tracks made me shit myself that my cover was going to be blown haha. Tbf even playing this now gives me the chills, that meat kings brother is quite creepy too

This game is close to being a masterpiece, in my opinion, largely because of the atmosphere, tension, fair challenge, themes of digging deep into 47's complex mind and, of course, the MUSIC! 2 : Silent Assassin was amazing for its time, as well, but the gameplay is really dated now and the music in its Middle Eastern and Indian levels is a bit cheesy. Blood Money was fun and had the most solid, fluid gameplay of the original four but I actually feel as if it was too "Hollywood-ized" and in-your-face when it comes to the music and story with staged tension appearing more often. This, however, was balanced well enough and felt a lot more real, colder, grittier and more intense to play, to me.
It is funny that Contracts was released with the hardest shortage of budget for the entire series, yet it is the most atmospheric part

The easiest stages to do this on in contracts are Traditions of the Trade, Seafood Massacre, and Hunter & Hunted.

They should be doing what capcom is doing, they should go back, look over what people initially liked and what was better, and just redo it all, start afresh but make it a REAL hitman game. Entirely nerw and different engine. Keep the pacing and overall progression like the 2nd game was. Keep the reason for doing the missions like codename 47 and blood money, make it about the CONTRACTS. Hitman contracts atmosphere needs to be duplicated somehow.
I think this would be a good basis for a solid hitman game.
Exactly the Hitman games in general could not provide the player with the full experience without Jesper's composition and I think Contracts showed was him at his very best out of the series

I loved the gameplay of Absolution (meaning the movements such as hiding, strangling, disguises, distractions etc) but what the game lacked overall was the EXPERIENCE of playing a Hitman game!!! When I play the Hitman series I want to TRAVEL AROUND THE WORLD (russia, china, columbia, middleast, beverly hills, africa, and definitely europe), performing assassinations on high level drug lords, corrupt politicians, sex slave traders, aka bad people!!! Not roam around the desert in fuckin south dakota lol! Oh and I want to be an actual HITMAN again working for an agency or any other rich clients whom are in need of a silent assassin and getting paid six figures for it! Basically I want it to be like a 007 plot except being a straight up hitman. All those traits I listed above made the Hitman series so enjoyable imo. Not to mention disguises, characters, silenced weapons, and just playing as 47!!! Along with Jesper Kyd aka the greatest video game composer of all time !(who was not in absolution unfortunately) I I am extremely passionate about the Hitman series and was sad to see a game with so much potential turn out the way it did. I did like it a lot but it could have been a 11/10 with the right ideas that is my main point. Anyways I like what you said and fear we may never see a real hitman game again...
