  • How much can a person see when I've got about 6 hours to detour to Philadelphia?
The historic heart of the city is jam-packed with museums and historic sites, so you really need a week to see it all. But I did my best.
Do not expect to show up without advance planning and get to see Independence Hall - tickets sell out in advance! But to me, it was far more moving to get to get to see Congress Hall. A history teacher of mine once said that the REAL American Revolution was when George Washington handed over power to John Adams. One of the parks rangers added an important addendum to that: and Thomas Jefferson stood by. He did not raise an army like a European war of succession. He respected the will of the Electoral College (remember Americans didn't get to vote for President yet), and the peaceful transfer of power proved to the world that Democracy was possible.
I apologize for the cringey time I misspoke and said that the inkstand signed the Declaration of Independence. Obviously, it's the inkstand that was PROBABLY used by the signers of the Declaration... I could have left it out of the video, but then you guys wouldn't get to see it. I just show you my life, warts and all...
Places that I managed to cram in:
Independence Mall visitor center (I had to get my National Parks Passport stamp!)
    Congress Hall
    Old City Hall
    The Liberty Bell
    The Great Essentials Exhibit
Once Upon a Nation (Storytelling sites scattered around the city)
Christ Church Burial Ground/Benjamin Franklin's Grave
    Arch Street Meeting House
    Betsy Ross House
    Elfreth's Alley
    Old City Pizza
