So happy to learn this recipe..I used to buy do Dominican style oatmeal from the breakfast street carts in Washington Heights for breakfast and it looks exactly like this!
I love making this avena. The only difference is that I put my canela (cinnamon sticks) at the start with the water so the flavor gets in there. The lemon sends it to another level and less sugar for me but this is spot on.
I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart♥️ when I first moved to Washington Heights, I lived with this Dominican family and I remember having an overnight job and when I would arrive at the apartment in the morning, they were leaving for work and they would always leave me a big giant cup of this and I didn’t know the recipe so much as I thought it was simply hot chocolate so I would try to emulate the recipe not knowing what actually went into it step by step. When I moved out I was obsessed with it and couldn’t find the recipe anywhere until coming across your video. A big thank you ♥️♥️♥️🦋🦋🦋🦋
I just made this with one minute oats & it works perfectly. They barely need to be pre-soaked. I like my oatmeal not thick but not smooth & creamy, so the texture of instant oats worked amazingly! Thanks for bringing my country 🇩🇴 back into my kitchen!!! 💟
I made this and me and my grandchildren love it. Now my daughter has me making it all the time. Thank you, I haven’t had this in years and always wanted to know how to make it.
Excellent presentation on how to simply make avena. Your way of making it is so much like my parents. Avena and mangu with fry cheese was our thing back in DR. Thank you for it.
I’m so happy to have found this channel. I’m Dominican American but for the life of me I can’t cook like my mom or grandmothers. This is the way my mom made it with fresh baked Italian bread, that was our breakfast. LOL! Can’t wait to give this a go my self. Can you teach how to make Torta de maiz, please. ❤️❤️❤️
I'm so excited to try this!! I used to work at LaGuardia Airport and I'd get Avena (or Mangú) from LaGuardia Cafe about once a week. I've been missing it a lot since I've moved! Thank you for uploading.
I absolutely agree with you! Avena is the way to go on a hot or cold day...It's such a homey meal. Thank you for being amazing Chef Zee. I'm so glad I ran into your page. Wishing nothing but great things for your future!
I just did your chocolate one and all I can say is OH MY GOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And of course with bread!!! From the moment my brother and sister in law told me about this channel, I have been HOOKED! For lunch I’m doing your baked ziti!!!
TEAM CHOCOLATE 🍫 & whole avena lol 😝 thanks! Love this recipe! I had forgotten to make it & I looked it up on ur page cuz I knew you would have this.. thx 🙏🏼 ❤👍🏼👍🏼
I made the chocolate recipe yesterday and it was delicious. I had leftovers for today which I thought would be a gloppy mess. Wow, was I wrong!!! (So happy to be wrong) It's better today than yesterday. It's creamy, spicy, chocolate avena!!! YUM!!!! Thank you for this wonderful recipe. New Thanksgiving Day breakfast tradition - got you covered!!!!
You are the best who ever done it! People like you make me love my culture.. Sigue Matando en la cocina.. Much love from Washington Heights, ill be watching!
Omg Chef Zee I really missed eating the Dominican avena specially from the vending cars when i lived in Washington Heights your vidio seriously brings back memories of that unique delicious flavors that the Dominican ladies add to the preparation of this delicious comforting dish. I can't wait to make the recipe myself Cari 😍
I'm TEAM ERRRTHANG. I will eat anything! Gracias Mami this looks amaaaazing. Gonna serve this up to my guerito for his morning breakfasts TO-GO STYLE❤️❤️❤️
Btw a few months ago I was going. To comment and ask you to make the Dominican avena recipe bc mine wasn’t coming out like abuelas does. But I felt stupid for asking to make an avena video like c’mon it’s just avena compared to all the delicious recipes you have so in sooo glad you did this. And btw, I now see what was missing, the lemon wedge lol
This looks delicious! Wow I’ve never heard of this! I live with Jamaicans and this reminds me a little bit like the different porridges they make. I realize lot of Caribbean countries have similar dishes just made a bit differently though. Thanks much for sharing I am definitely going to try! Love learning about different cultures etc and Especially foods! really nice🤗🥰🙏
Aww thank you!!! This is hands down one of the most memorable comments that anyone has ever left me. Thank you so much for sharing. I'm touched and actually tearing up as I write this. Wow! Thank you again. Kisses & hugs to you and your grandkids!!!!!!!
Let me just say my son hates oatmeal because he is a Farina lover. But he loved it! Ask for seconds during his first spoon lol thank you so much I got him eat oatmeal finally thanks to you! 😁😁😁😁 Have a great holiday!
Girl! You just took me back to my Grandmothers kitchens. Both my Mamás made this for breakfast and sometimes Sunday dinner. 😢 Chocolate or not both make me happy. I had to have butter on my bread.❤️❤️❤️
You're welcome!!! If she hates oatmeal, definitely strain out the oatmeal pieces for her. She'll get used to the taste and as she ages you can try and introduce the pieces of oatmeal. My sister was the same way when she was little and now we fight over the oatmeal that's left behind from when we strain it lol
Just to be clear this is a new style or her version of how to make oat milk. I'm old school and this is definitely not how the abuela used to make it. But her version works and I love her voice. Thank you.
@@Chefzeecooks Yes. I was just telling my wife about Dominican Avena, she is not latina so i have been making a bunch of Dominican dishes for her. I will be making this soon
Excellent recipe just like I grew up with. Thank you so much! Also, I recommend you try substituting monk fruit sweetener if you can source it instead of sugar because it’s healthier, tastes even better and won’t your spike blood sugar 😅 win win!
I like regular like both but I prefer no chocolate but my daughter is on the chocolate team she loves both them but she prefers chocolate.. thank you so much for the recipe it was my first time making it and thanks to the following your recipe I did it real good me and my daughter loved it..
Chef Zee wow that looks delicious omg. You know what I miss since I'm no longer living in Queens, when I used to work in Jackson heights 82nd street I got off the 7 train and the little Mexican Lady sold arroz con leche in the morning during the winter. Mmmm. Btw, I agree using fancy cocoa powder is sometimes tough because it doesn't dissolve as it should. Nesquick is better. I make my own hot chocolate and the cocoa powder gives me a hard time sometimes.
Chef Zee I really Love watching your videos your voice is so soothing. I wanted to see how you make your Oatmeal (Avena) because everyone makes it different but I like the way you make it. I can also make Avena, the Haitian way. I will be making it this way with chocolate thank you
I’m Puerto Rican but honestly hands down - Dominicans make the bestttt avena for me!!! 🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼
Gracias Dios te bendigas pero ustedes no se quedan atrás ❤❤❤❤❤😂😂😂
So happy to learn this recipe..I used to buy do Dominican style oatmeal from the breakfast street carts in Washington Heights for breakfast and it looks exactly like this!

Is that keto ?
@@CallMeTimte no as it has oatmeal
If that's what you need, but the original is just as healthy.
