      Great video, I live in Central Florida also for 36yrs(since I was 5) I've been a fan of Metallica for at least 30yrs and yes James's mother and father were both Christian scientist and would not go to a hospital or any doctor for her cancer.
      The experience among others were really hard on James and his relationship with his dad, you should also check out the song "Mama said" and definitely the live version from 1996 where he plays it solo it is amazing\m/

      This sort of fundamentalism is where all religions lose me. Not just Christians, but others as well. And that worries me as someone who grew up Catholic. In fact in my age 40+ life (I'm 46 now) I have grown quit critical of religion the more I learn about it and other institutions. When I learned that the Catholic Church along with the International Red Cross helped Nazi Officers escape southern Italy after the fall of Germany in 1945, I'm like damn...hard for me to take the self righteous teachings of the church seriously when you're aiding Nazis escape justice.

    James' wording, "pride that you felt when you kneel" is so brilliant. Many religious people forget that pride is one sin that God hates the most.
    Pride blinds people. People who believe to be 'the chosen ones' or 'the true believers' are the ones who do attrocities. Instead of staying in God's path, they become the very thing that God hates.

    • @cooperlittlehales6268
      @cooperlittlehales6268 9 месяцев назад +2

      @@giovannicella7817 The betrayal, I think, is in reference to how James' mother refused modern medicine because she believed (and had been told by her church I think) that god would cure her cancer. And that if it wasn't working, she just needed to pray more and stop listening to people around her. This, obviously, led to her death, which happened when James was still young (around 15 I think), and left James without either of his parents. So I think he's talking about how the church betrayed his mother.

Even once Bede translated it it took centuries for mass and liturgies to be in anything other than Latin which was withheld from those without an formal education which in itself was controlled by the Church. Eventually he died, and was angry with god. God responded with, I sent you warnings on the radio and tv. I sent you neighbors with cars. I sent you a boat, when the water rose. I sent you a helicopter, when the water got higher. What else could I have done for you? God works, and helps us in many ways. It's up to us, to take action.

    It's about his mother and Christian science in general. There's also parts of the lyrics referring to a case where the parents, Christian scientists, would not let the doctors help out a young child who was sick. They believed in praying and their faith in God will heal the child. So the lyric trust you gave, a child to save, left you cold and him in grave is in reference to that. They had the belief that their 'god' would heal, so when the child died it left them cold with the thought their god had failed while the child was in the grave.
    Healing hand held back by the deepened nail is a reference to the healing hand (doctors) held back by the religious beliefs (deepened nail (on the cross)) so to speak.
    Its a brilliant song and by far my favourite in terms of lyrical context of any metallica song.

    Christian Science and the "fire and brimstone" style gospel of the early 20th century turned a lot of people away from Christ. My grandparents experienced these practices firsthand and essentially became atheists because of it. Modern day churches that focus on the love of God rather than on the punishment of hell are the only real way to bring people to the gospel. Trying to convert people using fear tactics is a losing effort.

Slayer with South of Heaven and Seasons of the Abyss, Anthrax with State of Euphoria and Persistence of Time. And even OverKill with Taking Over, Under the Influence, and Years of Decay. When my mom is almost die for Covid 3 years ago, some Jehovah' s witnesses trying to help me, to change my mind in a moment where I'm very weak , but my faith in the REAL GOD helps me, and helps my mom. I prayed for 7 months no stop, talk to him, like the Father who He Is, and he saves her! Every doctors says that it was a miracle that she's alive, and I know for sure that was the hand of God, because I trust in him, and I lay my and her life in his hand. The Jehovah's way of take me in this horrific situation, and trying to get me into their "religion", was really awful and disrespectful. They trying to convince me that the saint doesn't exist and even the Mother Mary. Instead of Heatfield I don't lose my mom, but I understand his anger for this person who kills her. We always believe in God, and if you ask , He always respond. I always reading Jeremiah 29.11-13, its one of my fav because he gives me so much hope when I'm down. thank you fro this video. I was in a cult when I was 18 years old. It damaged me so bad that even today, I have panic attacks if I go inside a church. I’m no longer a Christian. I ran off an joined the pagan Druids and found some healing in the quietness of nature. I like to volunteer at some churches locally but going inside causes my heart rate to spike, my breathing to go shallow. I know it’s mental but the trauma persists. I was put through mental, emotional, and even physical abuse. It is hard for me to separate my experience in a cult from that of real Christian churches because the packaging on the outside is the same. Something deep inside me cannot follow Christ because of my experience in that cult. Logically I know the difference but psychologically I will never be able to. I’m not usually up in my feelings but when you talked about the CS god being counterfeit I really felt that. I’ve never been able to put words to it. That was over half my life ago. Yikes now I’m feeling old.

    By the way... this song is a litmus test. Or, rather, a persons's consideration of this song is a litmus test on how willing they are to think and perhaps change their minds when provided with new information.
    A religious thinker will take it on the surface and consider it heretical. Dig, and the false god concept appears. Dig even deeper to the writer's backstory, and it's obvious that it's little to do with Christianity at all, and all about the 'false prophets' that wronged them. But does the original consideration stick, or is a mind changed? That's the test.

      @saturnaliamiracle Certainly as an educated person, you would have to agree that one example does not set the precedent. His point isn't necessarily that religious people are uneducated, it's that they are more likely to experience a knee-jerk reaction to any medium that criticizes god. Listing your credentials doesn't make your argument any better, as again, one example cannot upend the precedent. If you are as educated as you claim to be, surely you would try to make a logical argument rather than flippantly insulting him.

    "Trust you gave, a child to save
    Left you cold and him in grave"
    hes talking about all the children who have died over the years because of idiotic cult beliefs like how the Jehovah's Witnesses say taking a blood transfusion is a sin so they refuses life saving blood transfusions. Did you know if you're baptized as a Jehovah's Witness and you go to the hospital they will actually have a person from their "kingdom hall" who will go to the hospital and police the patient to make sure the hospital doesn't give them blood? Even if the patient/family says its okay? There are people who force kids to die because of their religious beliefs. This should not be legal in the US.

    I read the lines "I hear faith in your cries, never you hear the discouraging lies" as in indictment of faith based belief systems, to me the story of this song demonstrates exactly why using faith as a path to truth is a bad thing. If faith can be used to justify horrible beliefs like faith healing how can we expect it to be reliable in any other context? It's this sort of system where legitimate doubts are taught as "discouraging lies" that often produces people who will never be able to question their beliefs or their actions that are tied to those beliefs.

Because kids in school would criticize me for listening to Metallica and other secular bands because I claimed to be a Christian which I still am will be forever. Anyway that would be great if you guys could do that song and break it down.

    Just to clarify if someone else hasn't: His mother wasn't just a Christian Scientist. She also died of cancer while refusing to get medical help because of her beliefs. The song has a lot of metaphorical meaning relating to that. So the stuff about her religion being compared to a parasite is also a reference to her dying of cancer, same with the whole concept of "the god that failed" because "her god" didn't/couldn't save her like she thought he would by not going to a doctor. Hence the lines about god leaving his child to die and "left you cold" is also a reference to her being left to die by "the god that failed".

    Another good Metallica song to listen to is Leper Messiah. You mentioned the prosperity gospel, Leper Messiah to me sounds a lot like he's talking about the televangelists of the 70s and 80s and the false faith healers I think some of that plays into much of people's hatred for God. Before I realized the truth I was a huge Metallica fan they were my first favorite band. Slayer was another big influence on my thinking of who and what God is, partnered with the traumatic events of my existence. I was abused in many ways as a child I'm only 42 years old now. I grew up very fast. Jehovah's witnesses played a big role in much of my hatred for God in the past. I believed so many lies and medicated with drugs and alcohol. You're doing an amazing job God bless you and keep doing what you do.

    "The healing hand" lyric means the "healing hand" is jesus' hand and the gift of medical knowledge being held back back by her false version of Christianity symbolized as the "deepened nail".

    • @Villani_AV
      @Villani_AV 4 года назад

      A bit off there, the healing hand concept is actual real world medicine, the nail is his parent's belief in Christian science and how it fits together is that when he was a teen his mother died and her faith in her religion caused her to not seek medical help

They may not believe in creation but there souls guide there life. Metal brings me closer to God and test my mind. If we never question we will never know.

    Thank you for this reaction. I didn't know James' mother was a christian scientist and that is what the song was about. Always thought he was singing about Jesus which always kind of made me sad when I listened to it. Also, I think that James probably didn't understand the nature of christian science at the time of writing and so he possibly was aiming his grief at Jesus (incorrectly).
    Wonder if he knows the difference now.

    I think your interpretation is very interesting, considering you’re a pastor and all. I like that you’re not right away condemning the song, you’re trying to understand and justify it in a way. But I think you’re interpreting it wrongly. These are my thoughts about it:
    I want to almost say that I don’t think Hetfields mother believed in Christian Science. At least not strongly, or in the “cult” kinda way. I think she just genuinely trusted that her faith in god would heal her. Either way, that’s what she believed, cult or no.
    I think when hetfield says “the healing hand held back by the deepened nail”, I think he is referring to Jesus, not to oneself. I think he is saying that Jesus cannot heal due to the deepened nail (the crucifixion). I don’t think it was meant to mean that your own hands. I think it was a direct reference to the Jesus’ death.
    Now when you interpreted the line “trust you gave, a child to save, left you cold and him in grave”. You interpreted to mean that hetfields religion was killed. But I think it was meant to reference Jesus’ death again. I think it was basically saying “you trust god to heal you, but he left his own child to die”. That kinda thing, the impact of that hits really hard.
    This is kinda why I think his mother was just flat out Christian, and just really believed god would heal her and she didn’t need medicine. There are too many references to real biblical events (the crucifixion, Jesus, etc.). But of course this is still just my opinions :)
    Besides what I personally think you interpreted wrong, this reaction was wonderful. When I saw this was the reaction, I went “well he’s about to scold the entire song”. I was pleasantly surprised that you guys just laid your insight into it, it was really refreshing to not see someone scold something for not being religious. I was raised Christian my entire life, and currently I want to say I’m sorta a religious atheist??? I’m not really sure, but for anyone like me who struggles with their faith, this song really is a beacon that helps us express our doubts and confusion. Because yeah, I wonder the same stuff. If you believe in him so much, why wouldn’t he heal you? Why would he heal you when he left his own son to die? That kinda thing.
    Either way I really loved the reaction, keep it up guys❤️

      Christ claims to be the only way to heaven, to be the only way to be saved. If you claim to be a Christian, this is the truth to them. A lot of other Faith's claim a lot of different things, but really only three really preach the heaven type Gospel. Christians, Jews, and Muslims. There are off shoots but if someone claims to be of the Christian faith and preaches something other than what the Bible claims as truth, is a cult.
