Flesh & Blood & Bone Episode 5: Creating Daft Punk's Helmets

- Join Kyra and Tony Gardner as they discuss his work creating Daft Punk's iconic helmets. Hear how his team had to pull in a range of specialists from jumbotron technicians, to astronauts and... auto body shops? Once again it is a reminder of Kyra's unconventional childhood since she knew Daft Punk's faces since she was around ten years old, and their helmets were at her dad's work since she was a toddler. The two discuss the creation of the helmet designs and get into some of the changes to their helmets and costumes over the years.
Tune in next month for a deep dive episode on Hocus Pocus!
It's been such a treat to hear Tony speak so fondly about the helmets rather than treating them as 'just another job'. They served as a perfect representation of what the band would become. Tony really gets what the helmets mean to us fans especially with the fan-made replicas, and getting to see the originals on display at certain exhibits in recent years.
With enough research online I've come across the Alterian archives, a great Mixmag video, a few behind the scenes clips uploaded by GotWub, and now this super insightful podcast. I think I speak on behalf of most to say that we would love to better understand everything there is to know from the creative process - detailed circuitry, design drafts, and even present day images of castings and molds.
There's still a lot about the original helmets' construction that remains a mystery, for example - many recreations I see (even one featured in this video) have 8 rows of LEDs for Thomas' visor running off several Maxim 7221 chips, but the real Thomas helmet made by Alterian had 11 rows of LEDs...
I would spend good money on a publication which gives Tony Gardner's fully detailed account on how he assembled the helmets with plenty of never before seen images. As a book, it could be a real collector's piece - both for Daft Punk fans and people with a passion for prop making - What better way to celebrate the upcoming 25th anniversary of the helmets! Couldn't thank you guys enough for talking more about your incredible journey with the robots and hope to hear more soon!!! 🌟
RUclips could not have recommended a better video for me to watch.
What an absolute treat to see this come up on my algo. Many many thanks to your father!
Lovely conversation, thank you both! ❤️
Amazing stuff! I wasn't really into Daft Punk until I saw them live at Coachella 2006 (their first US show in over a decade, and first as the robots).I was watching Depeche Mode at the main stage, and noticed a lot of people leaving early to go over to the Sahara tent... and something in my gut told me I should go over there too... even though I had absolutely zero idea of what to expect. I was alone and worked my way into a prime spot near the front, and then had my life changed.
Oh my god that's AMAZING! I would have loved to see them at Coachella too! Although I would have been 9 then haha. Also seeing Depeche Mode at Coachella seems amazing too!
Good Job to mr Tony Gardner for the amazing work with Daft punk since 2000
What a treat, fascinating to learn the history of the original development and ongoing adjustments. I had no idea. Great contrast in your personalitie makes for a wonderful podcast, your enthusiasm and your dads chill delivery.
Thank you! We are new to this and just finding our legs. Happy to know it’s landing so far!
I checked out Tony's IMDB after watching this. Wow. Amazing.
Wow what a story! Love the Daft Punk bandana as well. So cool! Thank you for sharing with us 😃
This was so fun to watch! I would love to see more daft punk content in the future.
P.S. I love your bandana!
Thank you! Definitely want to do more
Great discussion. I hope to one day get something like this sorted for my music project. Thank you for blazing the path Gardners

Loved this. HUGE Daft Punk fan. This was incredible to hear.
@@andyfox7107 yes we kept forgetting another 5 the whole time 😂😂 woops!!
@@fleshandbloodandbone it’s ok it hardly bothered my OCD…. Hardly.
🫶Thanks for the ep x
Also it’s impossible to put into words how much your Dad’s work has affected my life. Just so unbelievably cool.
Thank you, for the stories !
Your dad is a legend! He has worked on so many classic films, any chance you could do a interview about nightbreed?
I have to watch it first (I’m the worst) but yes!
I always thought the Japanese Space Sheriff Gavan was a huge inspiration for he designs, I’ve seen them having toys of those in their studio.
this is incredible, thank you for sharing!
The one reminds me of Tokkyuu Shirei Solbrain - SolBraver's Helmet. My next print after I finish the Yosh Hellbat suit.
Cant wait to hear about Electroma too!
Thanks so much for putting this together. Prime Time of your Life was one of the first times I remember being truly frightened by a piece of media. Tony was kind enough to respond to a facebook comment I made about a decade ago, talking about how the camera used on that shoot was an original Sesame Street camera, purchased by Thomas. The whole Human After All album cycle had such a gritty feel to it, and I'd love to hear more from Tony about what those discussions were like between him and the band.
Woow amazing story about Tony make the Best Daft punk helmets
did you consider how different metals resonated/transfered/differentiated signals to the specific ear surrounded? or was it just an aesthetic consideration with previous generalized findings considered in coordination with weight and cost?
Thomas and Guy-Man hello ! 👋
Hi Kyra. Good show! I am a special effects makeup artist as well, and remember when your Dad made a name for himself with that Half corpse in ROTLD.
I'd love to get the helmets.
Beautiful! Thank you for such a detailed process history. Also need alert: it's THX-1138 not 1000.
Thank you!! I totally realized that after the fact - woops! We both had a long work day haha
@@fleshandbloodandbone Maybe I did, too. I meant to write Nerd Alert. Can't wait for future Daft Installments!
súper interesting! thank you for sharing! can’t wait to watch more about Daft Punk stories! xx
If I’m not mistaken, the microphones are backward… generally the front of the microphone you’d want pointing toward the hosts! Pointing away like this has made it much more roomy sounding and more “echo”.
@@mjrausch thank you so much!! I couldn’t understand why my audio sounded different this episode. I know camera gear much more than I do microphones and I was hoping someone would comment with advice or tips!! Thank you! We will flip them next episode haha
@@fleshandbloodandbone Sure thing - keep on trucking. The content is so compelling it hardly matters, so hopefully you didn’t take my criticism as anything other than constructive. I know your Dad is proud of you, I hope I can raise my daughters to be as amazing. God Bless!
The real stars of Daft Punk, lol.
that’s the coolest thing ever
Well this is nifty. I had no idea.
did you pollish the masks after the 9:09 creation time? does that count as work? should that extend the timeclock2paycheck transference? or your definition of happenings in one term?
what was the year on MARS?
Absolutely amazing!! Thank you 🙏 can't wait for more awesome stories
I might be wrong, but I think your microphones are backwards, looks like you're talking into the back of them vs the front!
Yes thank you! We got another comment like this - so helpful! I am new to podcasting and was wondering why the audio sounded so different! Thank you for the help! We'll adjust :)
I swear I can literally feel the pride beaming off of her.
Great video, great relationship ❤
Wooooow!!❤
So your dad was THE MAN and you never asked?! hahaha I guess there's tons of memorabiblia on your house about the french duo you never cared of too! LOL GREAT podcast and interview, I've subscribed for more!
@@DaftRebel it was so normal in my household I didn’t understand what a big deal it was! Haha.. thank you!!
I hope one day the technology will advance enough to make full synthetic robot versions that do concerts with them being programmed. I think that would be awesome but they both probably wouldn't allow it to become a reality. Kinda like the weird hologram thing that they tried to do with dead artists.
It wouldn’t be the first time the helmets let one or both of them to sit out gigs.
oh yea, well my dad was a Calculus professor, which is pretty darn cool too :-| .... ;-[......... 😢
does the D!P in the MMM add or reduce? why is (boom boom boom boom) so celebrated in a musical sense?
and math sense
Not 555 but 5555 🥲🤭
Yes thank you 😂 I was so tired that day! I didn’t catch it lol
did you design the leather suits? you should have put them in Eddie Murphy's red leather wonseie from delerious
I don’t think so! I believe they were made and designed by a French designer
Nice episode, nice work…..
Awesome!
LEGENDARY. THIS IS WHAT WE’VE BEEN WANTING 💯💯
