What can you do for a tooth abscess at home?

  • A tooth abscess is a painful condition caused by a bacterial infection. It requires prompt medical attention, but there are some things you can do at home to help alleviate the pain and discomfort until you can see a dentist.
    First, you should rinse your mouth with warm salt water several times daily. This can help to reduce swelling and kill some of the bacteria causing the infection.
    You can also apply a cold compress to the affected area to help reduce pain and swelling. Wrap an ice pack or a bag of frozen peas in a towel and hold it against your cheek for 15-20 minutes at a time.
    Over-the-counter pain relievers like ibuprofen or acetaminophen can also help to reduce pain and inflammation.
    It's important to note that while these home remedies can provide some relief, they are not a substitute for professional dental care. If you suspect that you have a tooth abscess, seeing a dentist as soon as possible is essential to prevent the infection from spreading and causing further damage.

      @@gamingwithyusairah4866 yeah I was there on Monday, but they couldn't do anything but give me antibiotics, since it was very inflamed. Today they opened the pus bubble and squeezed it out which was really painful, but I feel so much better now. Next step will be extraction of the tooth, since I already had a root treatment on it before. I could let the root be cut shorter and keep it, but since that would actually involve removing bone to get to the root I rather let them pull it.

    One word...BENADRYL. You may be sleepy for a few hours after you take it, but it WILL get rid of the swelling, pain, and infection. The pus from the infection is nothing more than poisonous mucus. The benadryl is made to help sinuses (a lot of it is controlling mucus). It worked for me within 20 minutes. Knocked the pain out QUICK, took down the swelling, and after 2-3 days passed, the abcess was still gone.

      @@TheKarldav At some point of course it's recommended to get the problem fixed if you can by having the tooth removed. This is a fix for if you can't afford to get it fixed at the moment. They abscesses may still come back once or twice out the year if you don't get it fixed because 9/10 the problem is a cavity in the tooth or food getting under the tooth... but it is a fast way to get it back under control so you can continue going on with your days. By the way, I'm not a doctor or professional. I'm just giving my advice based on what I've been going through myself and others around me. You can Google it though, professional dental sites will tell you benadryl helps because it's an antihistamine

    • @gracietilert8952
      @gracietilert8952 6 месяцев назад +18

      Don’t do this. A bacterial infection is not cured by an antihistamine. You need an antibiotic.

      @LDavis1293 6 месяцев назад

      @@gracietilert8952 I didn't use any antibiotic and I STILL don't have an abcess. Matter of fact, when I took antibiotics the first time I had an abcess they wore off and the abcess came right back. Antibiotics don't always work for everyone. Everyone is different and antibiotics take too long to work most of the time before the symptoms die down. Benadryl took 20 minutes and I felt it working. I never said it was a complete cure. You should still work on getting the tooth fixed but this absolutely works especially when you're in pain to the point of thinking about killing yourself or ramming your head into a wall. It actually DOES cure it in a way because it gets rid of the mucus hence the PUS which gets rid of the swelling and pressure. You don't know what you're talking about. I do KNOW THIS from experience, and I googled it after I realized it worked. My husband has done it as well when he got an abcess. Please hush. Google says you CAN take a Benadryl because of the power behind it that you mentioned for a jacked up tooth.
      A dentist actually told me this was smart of me and if it worked, that's all that matters. There have been no issues since I did it, there was no infection seen later either.

      @@gracietilert8952Really? I was on 10 different antibiotics and not one cured the abscess. It may help some people and it helped her so yeah Antibiotics don’t help if not caught within 48 hours of abscess infection. Look it up, past 48 hrs it only helps to keep infection under control yet it will not eliminate it.

    One time I had a abscess on the bottom of my gums by one of my chewing teeth and everytime I stretched my bottom lip, I could easily make the pus from the abscess come out. In some way it felt therapeutic. I just brushed my teeth, used mouth wash/ warm salted/peppered water and pulled on my lip but no needle was involved but eventually the tooth needed to be removed.

    I have had my wisdom tooth cavity drilled out & filled last year because they said that it was causing the pain in one of the front molar teeth,it did fix it for a while but this year the pain came back around the front molar.
    I flossed the tooth & it bled but it felt better but the inflammation occurred on the other side of the tooth,I flossed that & it bled slightly & this mucous stuff came out & the pain deceased the next day.
    But I have been needing to take aspirin because the throbbing occurs when I go to bed,I have a cracked tooth but there is no cavity inside of the tooth,he will blame the wisdom tooth for the pain that he said may need removing.
    The inflammation has only occurred between the teeth !

    Do not attempt to squeeze or pop the abscess. We know it is tempting to “deflate” the bump that develops on the gums when you have a tooth abscess. The problem is that when you squeeze or pop the abscess, you actually introduce even more bacteria into the infection. Leave it alone.
    Thanks to improved dental hygiene, modern dentistry, and antibiotics, tooth infections are rarely life-threatening. However, the longer you wait to get your infection treated, the more likely it is that the infection can spread to other areas, such as the jawbone, cheek, neck, and beyond.
    If you are waiting to see a dentist, it is best to : Gargle warm salt water often, buy some clinical grade tooth paste / mouth wash. Try your best not to poke, push, or squeeze the abscess, as this will just make it worse or possibly infect more areas.
    HEY YOU, worried about having a tooth pulled? Look it sucks, probably should have taken better care of it. Yeah I know, but dental implants are a thing and very affordable if you shop around. Check medical tourism in places such as Mexico or Turkey.
    In the end, leave it to the professionals, don't give allow this to turn into sepsis, because then you'll wish you would have gone to dentist or uuuh you know...*coffin dance*
