Cops receive description of a white man in his 30s wearing a dark green/grey jacket and an orange hat. They go question a 60-year-old black man wearing an orange jacket and black hat. Shortly before questioning him, one of the cops says in the recording that he "doesn't even look anything like him" (referring to the description of the actual suspect). 3:23 All of that, plain as day from both this video and from the police's internal investigation, and yet there are still people in these comments claiming the police did nothing wrong. And people wonder why we say there's a systemic issue...
The police was just as wrong. Once they enter the store they should go to the Lost Prevetion office before making contact with the shoplifters. They run the streets and public, when they step in the store, they have to abide by store companies policing. The store is responsible liable for what happens to the shoplifters. The store is the one who will be sued. Once the police speaks with Lost Prevention or a member of management they can take over the case. The store tells police officers if they want to press charges or if they want to banned the shoplifters. Banding means the shoplifters are not to go on any property of the store even if they're out of the states. We used API, a computer base report that's Shared company wide. Which is one of the first things you look at to see if they have previous been caught shopping lifting.

The decision has always been left up the what the store polices are. Give you a couple of examples. If a homeless person came only stole some ready cooked food, would you have them arrested. A child put a pack of gum in thdir pocket. A customer come in the automotive business entirely open a bottle coil pour some of it on the floor lay down in it, wants to file a accident claim you get a call you look at the video see what that customer did. You have called the none emergency phone number to have a police officer to come to the store tell the operator what location for the officers to come so they won't go to the AP office. You Go out to speak with the customer with a accident floder get their information. Ask if they're alright listening to them tell you what happened ask them if they want to file a accident report. You have a associate to to stay and watch the customer you don't want to leave a customer who just had a slip and fall in the store to be left alone that may pass out. Once the officers come to your location you tell them what you got got going on that you've viewed the video what the customer did.. The customer doesn't know that you're speaking to police officers. They ask what you like to do. You already have your banned paperwork done. Go back to the location where the customer is the officers With the police telling the customer exactly what you viewed on video ask them if they still want to file a accident report. You do inform them that you're Bannding them from the stores. Reading the paper work to them. Ask their I'd have them to sign it. The police are going to ask if you want to have each of these of the people in these examples arrest. You make a decision based on company policy. Yes each one could be arrested. If you look at cost of each of these examples would it be cost affected for you to have to go to court for their hearings?. In order Banned to be put on a customer it has to be on record at the police you station called the police give a copy of the APIS report. Those are just few of the the things when a officer arrive at any of my stores. They will ask you want you would like to do. Which you go by company policies. Anything that's taken out of the store that is not paid for by law it's shoppingliting regardlessof the amount. Another thing is establishment communication with the police, by going by the station to introduce yourself. Business are private property. I have a Meijers store where I live. Today I witnessed the worst racial profiling I’ve ever seen in my life. A white female door greeter stopping 3 black couples in a row to check their receipt and cart. I immediately demanded customer service get me the manager. In all that time, not once did she stop white people. Those were the only black people I saw leave thru those doors. I chewed out the manager, filed complaints with their corporate office, waiting to hear from them right now, and tomorrow I will be boycotting outside their store. I’m a 60 year old white man and I have never seen such blatant racism in my life. I was shocked, disgusted and emotionally upset.
@@ladybug6117 I agree to an extent. The store was actively on the phone with police reporting the location of the real suspect. The manager stood there and didn't correct the officers.
Exactly, if a cop mistakenly questions anyone they should sue. I've been wrongfully questioned by cops and I was embarrassed, I want 10 trillion at least.
I commend this gentleman for continuing to press the point because obviously the people involved didn't know the seriousness of what they did and especially to a black man. Because of the attitudes and blatant disrespect and murders the police have perpetrated on men of colour, it is not unusual for them to be scared for their life anytime an officer is nearby. You'll notice he knew exactly that the police arrived before he did and even probably prepared to say that if he was illegally detained / profiled.

There was a robbery at a gas station a block from our house, and my son had gone to his friends house 3 blocks away where his other 3 friends were hanging out! as well. The police spotted my son who was wearing a black hooded sweatshirt jacket walking with his friends back to our house, when the cops showed up, pointed guns at these 5 boys because they thought my son was the one that burglarized the gas station!!!! Part of what is angering the gentleman is the fact that the officers were not making inquiries but affirmative accusations. The store “positively identified” as the thief yet he arrived after the officers. Even the officers weren’t sure but acted with certainty like he was guilty. The gentleman was faced with what, he knew were lies, from the beginning of the interaction. People that lie about you are trying to harm you.

Amazing how the police hear the description of the guy, and totally ignore it. I mean, come on - a white man doesn't look like a black man. Clothes are totally different. And the reason they SAY they went after this guy - he was "mirroring" them. In other words, he looked at the police officer. Yeah, something tells me this guy saw the cops and though, "Uh oh, bet these cops are going to go after me because I'm black" - and he was right!!! For real, questioning a black man should automatically give him 10 Trillion if he ends up not being the suspect. Personally I think we should just tell officers to let black people do whatever they want, just let them commit crimes and don't bother to question them because that would be racist.
The only way that this had been even more absurd is if the suspect was a white woman. The young cop didn't even have the decency to admit that the description given by dispatch included the fact that the suspect was white. That's just pathetic they walk in having the description of the person but the first black man they see that's does not fit the narrative they approach him but doesn't bother to look for the real suspect that is just a COPout they're not doing that job they're just doing whatever they want too!
The disclaimer even allows for officers making mistakes with impunity. Imagine being stopped by police as a white guy, and the description was of a black guy. This black guy isn’t even light skinned. He’s darker skinned. Those cops had confirmation bias. They probably were predisposed to believe that the shop lifter would be black. So, with that bias, they excluded every thing else that didn’t fit the bias, and made errors…. Then the Chief offers up hypotheses that weren’t possible, due to the fact that everything is already concluded. By saying that some times descriptions change. The reporter reminded him, that, that wasn’t the case. It was meant to keep him on track, and not move the goal post…
Exactly! And yes, the disclaimer at the beginning would be comical if it wasn't so terrifying. It's just a long-winded way to say that we should trust a cop's memory over concrete video evidence.
Yup everyone who makes a mistake needs to be fired. It's not worth it to stop shoplifters anymore. Imagine losing your job on this cuz some guy tried to steal 50 bucks worth of merchandice...but the officer questioned the wrong person and now is out of a job. This is why they just let the blacks steal now as long as it's under 700 dollars. It's not worth losing your job or bad publicity.

12:17 the best point that was made in the whole video. either the cops were lying or the asset protection guy was. Can't be both! Absolutely shameful police work.
"In a call to 911, a Meijer loss prevention worker described a white suspect who was wearing a dark green/gray Carhartt coat with a red hoodie underneath. Eric Lindsay, the innocent Black shopper stopped by police, was wearing a puffy burnt orange coat with a scarf." The Loss Prevention worker got it right. The dispatcher relaying the information also got it right. The police ignored the correct description and decided to accuse an innocent man, instead. I say "ignored" the description rather than made a mistake because it's evident from 3:23 that they KNEW the guy they were approaching didn't match the description.

I worry about the general intelligence of these police officers. From the start, they were told (by dispatch) that a man was actively shoplifting (i,e., placing items under his clothes, so as to _steal_ them, and that he was currently in “AISLE 14”. Why did the officer go to “CHECKOUT LANE 14”, as if the suspect were actually in the process of _purchasing,_ not stealing?
@@ed7519 The store and dispatch both relayed where the suspect was and what he looked like. This is on the cops for dismissing that info and on the store manager for not defending his LP employee when he knew the police fucked up.
Normally retailers don’t stop shoplifters until they try to leave the store with stolen merchandise. Seems like the managers weren’t doing things correctly as the officers normally go to the loss prevention room to pick up suspects. Officers also were wrong for walking around the store looking for the suspect.
The dispatcher said it was a Caucasian male with a tan jacket in an orange sweater hoodie, and they still walked up to the black guy because he was staring at the officers and they felt he was doing something wrong, I watched a whole Nother in the video on this and the officers have to pay this man because he sued, more taxpayer dollars going out because racist police officers get their egos and feelings hurt

Why didn't lose prevention met up with the officers to I'd the suspect. There's no way that they could've got the wrong man when the 911 operator told them it was a white man. These officers profile this man. I can understand why he's upset. As to why the Apc or the ApA didn't apprehend the shoplifters before the police officers arrived? Believe me that most shoplifters are white. Where most people believe other wise. When I was a Asset protection Coordinator in my stores more white people shoplift than any other race. National theft database reports these facts
In the store I used to work in, security ALWAYS detained the thieves first AND THEN the cops came and took it from there-- BUT before they even got to that point in order for security to even approach them, the thief had to be on their way out the door with the stolen merchandise instead of in the middle of a store aisle like we see in this video. The cops in my store would show up, go straight into the security office where the thief was being kept, then after about 10 minutes or less you'd see the person/people go out in handcuffs. I'm pretty sure that 10 minutes or less was spent with the police viewing the video evidence of the stealing that had occurred. They never just came into the store and took the person away or confronted the person straight away like they did in this video. Also, as far as who steals more, I wouldn't doubt for a minute that those numbers are misreported-- JUST LIKE how the true numbers are misreported about black people being the main ones who are on welfare.

The black man went a total different direction separate from the cops, he did not mirror any of them, which was a BS narrative that the police chief told the news media... The store manager was never contacted when the police arrived, he was with the actual suspect, yet the manager never stated that the black man was not the suspect when he was in front of him... The manager just casually guided the cops away from the black man... The police entered the store, walked past every white person and went directly to the black man... That manager wants the Police to respond for future incidents in a timely manner. If he makes noise it could take the police hours to respond.
The manager stood by and let it happen he didn't stop and correct the police the store manager was with them the whole time
The police was just as wrong.

A child put a pack of gum in thdir pocket. A customer come in the automotive business entirely open a bottle coil pour some of it on the floor lay down in it, wants to file a accident claim you get a call you look at the video see what that customer did. That has to stop. It’s absolutely disgusting that black people are being targeted every single time.
Does everyone see how nice they're treating the actual criminal?
I completely understand his frustration and anger. Racist cops 😠 😡
They just straight up lied...Damn!!!
Goes to show you, retail does not hire the smartest bulbs of the bunch. I would have been upset too.
How is this retail's fault? The cops were racist.
This is what happens when you give mutants uniforms, guns and badges.
I watch a lot of videos that are cringey on purpose like old '80s horror movies we used to watch. That being said I've never cringed so hard in my life. This man is a superhero and I'm proud of how he kept this cool 60 years in this game I guess he's got it down.
This officer needs to be fired! This was no excuse to accuse a man of something he didn't do. And the manager also needs to be fired as well.
This makes a person feel so degraded. Its a sinking feeling honestly. I was recently trailed by an older white female in Wal-Mart while looking for m&m's. She followed me for 5 mins.... I confronted her. I was livid but managed to keep it together. I had 120 cash and my 2cc and my debit card and I'm gonna steal $2 mm??? Its a sad day for any Black person to have to go through thus- and I single Blac because at this point it seems routine to try to victimize U.S.
Why you still here then? Go back to Africa
It’s not stealing until you leave the store I thought
12:17 the best point that was made in the whole video. either the cops were lying or the asset protection guy was. Can't be both! Absolutely shameful police work.
"In a call to 911, a Meijer loss prevention worker described a white suspect who was wearing a dark green/gray Carhartt coat with a red hoodie underneath. Eric Lindsay, the innocent Black shopper stopped by police, was wearing a puffy burnt orange coat with a scarf."
The Loss Prevention worker got it right. The dispatcher relaying the information also got it right. The police ignored the correct description and decided to accuse an innocent man, instead. I say "ignored" the description rather than made a mistake because it's evident from 3:23 that they KNEW the guy they were approaching didn't match the description.
Oh please....just open yoyr orange jacket. No need to start shrieking
@@mimibee626 Yeah, just subject yourself to unlawful search. That's a great precedent to wilfully propagate 🙄

Right I can’t believe the real shoplifter did get away he had many of chances to just walk right out the store with the stolen items! The racist cops didn’t care they was to busy looking for blacks that they hate

I don't think people get it; that is disgracefull
The evil never changed for me I am a old lady and it's the same thing over and over
I worry about the general intelligence of these police officers.
Maybe the store should have been clearer as to where the Police needed to be..?
@@ed7519 The store and dispatch both relayed where the suspect was and what he looked like.
This is on the cops for dismissing that info and on the store manager for not defending his LP employee when he knew the police fucked up.
Normally retailers don’t stop shoplifters until they try to leave the store with stolen merchandise. Seems like the managers weren’t doing things correctly as the officers normally go to the loss prevention room to pick up suspects. Officers also were wrong for walking around the store looking for the suspect.
That is the voice of frustration the voice of I'm tired of having to prove myself for everything I do the voice of I will no longer stand for this
The dispatcher said it was a Caucasian male with a tan jacket in an orange sweater hoodie, and they still walked up to the black guy because he was staring at the officers and they felt he was doing something wrong, I watched a whole Nother in the video on this and the officers have to pay this man because he sued, more taxpayer dollars going out because racist police officers get their egos and feelings hurt
Sound like to me the Asset Protection person is the only one that did tell the truth. It's disgusting how the cops stick to their lie as if they didn't have a FULL description!
Wow that manager literally asked him "are you still shopping?"
He my favourite guy of the crew. What an elegant Uncle Tom to seal this deal 😂😂
@@greatgownsbeautifulgowns I'm a retired Asset protection Coordinator, you're correct. You have to have your 5 elements before approaching shoplifters . If they turn the corner you lost eye sight there goes your shoplifter. You can not approach them. It's best to have other Apa or members of managements watching . Never go after one alone. They have to have passed all points of registers, unless there's a sidewalk sale. Most stores now are installing vestview in their stores. Which is a entance before you get to the main entrance to the store. Never have I had police to to come in the store without making contact with loss protection or management. With my Detective investigation skills, I've come to the conclusion that those two men are a dead ringer for each other. 😂😂
When the Police Chief was interviewed by a TV Channel, he said, "This was a minimal police encounter, the police acted professional".
1. This was NOT a "minimal police encounter"...It was "A Police Dentition" and an "Interrogation"
2. The Police could see that the man was black when he walked up to him...OK, maybe he could not tell he was black because he was a long way from him
3. The Police 100% accused him of being the "Shoplifter" and accused him of having items under his coat
4. The Police did NOT listen to Dispatch
***The Sr Police Officer DID NOT listen to DISPATCH or to his younger officer who said, "Thats not him" and "He looks nothing like him"
I think demotions are in order for these two officers. This is just incompetence.
And what about the store manager or who ever he was. STOOD BY AND DON'T RECTIFY????
You would think the police would talk to staff members, because you would think they would know who the thief is, before just walking through the store and taking pot luck in questioning anyone
The staff did come out and talk to the cops and they were also directed on their radios to checkout lane 14 and then further directed from there. Did you watch the video or just comment based on the title without actually watching?
@@jensen220 yes I did watch the video and all's I saw was two cops march in the store and walk up the lanes and not taking a blind bit of notice what was being said to them, because if they were listening they wouldn't have approached a bloke who walked in after them, seems like you wasn't watching properly
@@littlemissy2883 - 😂😂Maybe you should try watching all the way through. If I weren't "watching properly," I never would've posted to you. My reply didn't address the fact that they went up to the wrong guy; that was evident. It addressed the fact that you posted something without having watched what happened.
Why ask questions when you think you already know everything? That level of arrogance is what results in situations like this where a completely innocent guy that doesn’t even come close to the suspects description gets bagged up.
For 1 time the police men was man enough to say sorry which is more then any other cop say, still DONT excuse the fact they where nicer to the real criminal then him the way they to him was what started all this

This really burned me up they can't even follow a description of someone that was issued from they're dispatcher 😡😡😡🤬🤬🤬
What white people don't understand is that this kind thing has been going on for too long and sometimes it ends in tragedy. Well if F,,, had a color, it would be orange.
Nothing beats professionalism!!!! And respect!!
I mean usually the descriptions are more vague and general: "... black male, wearing jeans, measuring between 3 feet and 8 feet...". In that case I could understand a confusion, but here... COME ON! It's almost as if the brain had already decided who the criminal would be.
The dispatcher said the suspect was caucasian and one of the cops said the black man looks nothing like the man they are looking for but they STILL decided to go and harass him SMH
Walked up to him and told him to take his hands out of his pocket like he was a gun toting criminal.
OK, so the description on the dispatcher said that it was a Caucasian male, not black??? WTF? In my opinion the stop was racially motivated, because of the radio dispatcher’s description.
My heart goes out to this poor gentleman.

Dont you have to be walking out the store to consider it theft?
Nope as if it in your pocket and police catch you theft
Yes you have to attempt to leave the store, walk a bit past the registers

Here. If you put it in your pocket... That's guilty enough. Concealing merchandise..
You can actually put things in your pocket and they can’t get you in trouble for it. The only thing they can do is walk to you and ask if you need a buggie or something to carry them. I’ve worked in retail the past 5 years and we’ve had this happen multiple times where people thought they could carry items and couldn’t hold them all once they went shopping
@@jandrothaghost There is a such thing called scan as you shop, even Walmart has the App, so you can scan and bag your items while you're shopping, Amazon store you get your items and walk out and their scanned and charged to your credit card. Best to wait until people exit the store then it is considered theft.
Definitely racial profiling no doubt.
No amount of pretty costumes can improve the hiring practices, training, policy, history and most importantly; culture of a police department. There can be no accountability if none of the staff can handle criticism and seek to improve themselves and the department.
Yup, it's time to just fire all white people and hire only blacks. We the taxpayers can't afford to hand out the keys to the city and millions in dollar to every black person that gets wrongfully questioned in the vicinity of a crime.

The cop was disrespectful to the man upon contact... This "we are trying to figure it out" BS line... There was absolutely nothing to figure out, the dispatch call was clear... The black man walked in behind the cops that arrived to the scene, as the actual suspect was already in custody within the store... Everything about this encounter was racial... The information was of a "white suspect" that they were given... This was not a mistake... This was blatant racial profiling and a cover up attempt...
