Time Team S19-E10 How to Lose a Castle
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 30 сен 2024
- For generations a family of Somerset farmers have been wondering if there was ever actually a castle on top of the hill they call Castle Hill.
Records show there was a Norman castle in the area, but they are not clear about exactly where and there are several likely locations.
The only answer is for Tony and the Team to dig - once all the kit has been hauled up the steep slopes.
The geophysics looks exciting, throwing up almost immediately what looks like the outline of a perfect castle keep. But as the three days progress everything is far from clear.
Finally the pieces of the jigsaw do join up, but only in a very unexpected way. Do the farmers have their castle? Well... while the Team give with one hand they take away with the other!
R.I.P. MICK, you brought so much thank you and bless you.
Id like to add RIP Robin too. His segments were terrific.
Yes I enjoyed him as well.
I agree with Anna! I miss Stuart!!!!! My favorite!!
Nothing wrong with Alex but why did they replace Stewart? Big mistake.
I like how Tony plays devil's advocate. Playing a skeptical viewer, not only does it keep the archeologists honest, it lets them get a bit of well mannered banter in :)
And you have no idea how much it helps me grasp what they're doing. I am a 78 year old woman, widow, and totally uninformed re archaeology. So long times alone and uninformed. And Tony's questions are exactly what I would have asked, were I there.
@@corneliawissing7950, I am a 74 year old widower and since my wife died 6 months ago I have been steadily working my way through all the TT episodes. They have kept me entertained and enhanced my will to live!
@@blaggercoyote, When Sir Tony reaches heaven, think how surprised he'll be by being honoured for the help he gave two elderly people that he never even knew!
Miss Mick, so much, sad he passed away. He needed to rest more after he broke his leg. He was having difficulty walking to these bigger sites. It was easier for him in the back gardens of old cities...may he Requiesce in Pace! (In Latin "Rest in Peace".)
ive recently become a Time Team Addict, after binge watching and not really reading comments it just Crushed me when I found out that Mick had passed. he was a lovely man in every sense of the description.
@@mikeholton3914 Same! I found Time Team randomly last month. It took me a few weeks to realize that Mick had passed away. I have a hard time watching the episodes where he isn't a part of the show. I love Francis but he isn't Mick. And I just don't get the Mary Ann spin; I just don' get it! RIP Mick!
We all will miss you Mick .. from Canada EH
When I first started watching these I had no idea how funny Phil was. The entire team is/was absolutely amazing. I’m 66 years old and I wish I had this back in my early school days.
I wonder what Phil’s take is on someone like Zahi Hawass and his covering up our history.
Phil seems more focused on British and Irish history, Neolithic cultures.
Hawass will eventually be proven or disproven. Not holding out with the fundamental ideology in that part of the Middle East.
May you run forever, you magnificent, tenacious, archaeological gnomes of the old country.
Alas your plea is several years too late.
I suspect at that elevation and date, a cistern to store rainwater would be more likely than a well dug by hand to reach the water table. A well would have been labor intensive and taken a long while to complete during the turmoil of war when a soldier was more valuable than a digger or stone worker. Just thinkin'...
The Well theory also shows a singular lack of knowledge/understanding re Hydrology.
"Ahh... it might be a wall, but is it a castle?" 26:08
Classic Phil :D
That conversation... my favorite moments from this ep
The addition of eye-candy did not improve the show. It was fine the way it was. Like Top Gear was fine the way it was. The bean counters can fuck up anything. And they will.

Mary Ann makes me realize how good of a presenter Tony is. These changes are just modern ratings orientated, thus showing the intelligence and priorities of our time. Also, the music director needs to look up the word "Atmosphere".

Yeah, I can't stand Mary Ann. I much preferred Helen Geake. Some of the others, I didn't care for either. Nial was one. I do miss Mick though. Adored him.
I am sure Mary-Anne is a lovely lady but, I don't think se did much for the show
Great eye candy though.
Unlike Helen, and all of the other departed, she never even got her hands dirty. Even Tony and Mick dug when needed. Never contributed any knowledge and her questions weren't anything outstanding or profound; a schoolchild could make identical comments and contributions.
Wotdermatter
Alex and Mary-anne did not add to the team work. the rest are a team and these 2 are just there, being given busy work.
grandma lynda I am sure they where but, didn't impress me at all. Also it didn't stop me watching the program hahaha It's a shame it's still not on, I enjoyed it

never saw this show until I gave up TV. now I luv this show a lot. I especially like the Ireland and Scotland ones. That is where my family came from 3 generations ago. Nice way to learn some of the history without all the hard to read books. :)
I really don't have a problem with Mary Ann, I mean Tony couldn't run the show forever, and well I don't think she could pull the every man/ challenge the experts role as well as Tony, she could have easily pulled off the role he used to fill in the early days of the show. Physically running about the site so we could get an idea as to it's size as 3D does not translate well into television.
Mick Aston's complaints are very justified here as a lot of useful information was lost with Stewart, Helen, and Victor. I really think they should have worked younger experts into the show, as after nearly 20 years it was clear that the team they had just couldn't keep working on the show forever, but it was the role the experts provided to the show was really key to the show's success, and it was the loss of the brain trust that hurt the show not the inclusion of a young co-host.
I have one problem with Mary Ann: she seems to speak prescribed words. She's never natural, spontaneous.
I agree, I think she gets a bad rap.
But she had no control over that and apparently was not her expectation when she was hired.
The season when tv execs dumbed down the show and ruined.
I want Helen and carenza and Stuart. The spirit of the show is just gone
yea this lot suck . .
Carenza as replaced by Helen.
I never was a fan of Mary-Ann
Huh??? In this episode, they still have Mick, along with Phil, Raksha, Matt... I enjoyed the various youngsters in the field with their excitement, but for god's sake, the show lasted 20 years. People in academia are bound to have other opportunities. And I remember all the Carenza bashing, not to mention everyone going crazy over Bridget's butt cleavage. Make up your minds about who's essential. IMO, the show would be dead without Phil. As long as he's on, I'll watch. I always learn SOMEthing.
How long do you think they will be able to keep doing this? They needed replacements for them, Stuarts eyes were giving out, hence him needing glasses, so Alex was brought in to replace him, no one though Alex would be Stuart, but he was a decent replacement. Tony was really showing his age a few season before the show ended, he couldn't whip around the sites anymore like he did in the beginning, so they brought in Mary-Ann to take his place, again no one expected her to be just like Tony, but she would have been a good replacement if the writers hadn't dumbed things down and made her sound like an airhead at times, which coincidentally, from what I understand, is why she left as soon as her contract was up, she was presenter on four archaeological documentaries and shows before she was on Time Team, and two shows after, one of which I believe she is still presenter on. Mick made the decision to leave before Mary-Ann was hired because of format changes that dumbed down the show. Carenza left because she was misdiagnosed with breast cancer and the treatments were too much for her to take while still doing the show, so she left, then she finds out the diagnosis was wrong and her body was ravaged by the treatments for nothing. Whether you like it or not change is inevitable, especially in a long running show like this, all of the original people getting older and close to retiring they needed people to replace them if they were even going to try to keep the show going.
R.I.P Mick, legend.
Pondering in situ. RIP Mick Aston
i didnt realise he had died.....I used to enjoy watching time team brilliant programme and they made a great team
Mary Ann and Alex brought in as eye candy fluff?
bad joice
26:08 Mick and Phil, Brilliant. Nice camera work and editing there as well. ^-^
I miss Helen, Brigid, Stuart, Casandra and the original crew . They were so interesting. Thanks for keeping Raksha, Paul, John and Matt. All of them are real. BUT, this Mary Ann all teeth and Alex aka Del boy, both one dimensional. NOT GOOD.
Alex isn't a Stewart, but he's not over-trying to be one-of-the-gang like Mary Ann does. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. Too bad the producers didn't heed this ole saying. I miss Helen, too. It is good to see Matt and Raksha given more air time, though. I really like those two. Mick Aston was wise to leave over these changes, especially the addition of Mary Ann. We miss you Mick! RIP, Dr. Aston.
True ain't broke don't fix it the show would still be going loved the old show don't like this one
It seems that Mary Ann was added as "eye candy" to try and boost viewership. I know people say that these are all great archaeologists, but it seems that many are actually just actors or actresses hired to play a roll.
Viewership had been declining for years so from the view point of Channel 4 and their advertisers it was broken. Unfortunate how they chose to "fix" it but after a 20 year run maybe it was inevitable. I've been binge watching and the archaeology is getting repetitive so I can see how viewers might have drifted away. Phil and the crew still make it worthwhile to me and obviously a lot of other people watching these old episodes.
Yes...sad. But his image and contributions will live on in these wonderful shows...
The fact it's called "Castle Hill" rather than seeing any documentation of an actual named castle speaks well, imo, of the unfinishedness of it. I can easily imagine people for decades after pointing to the hill and saying "oh yeah, that's the hill we started the castle on" and it becoming "Castle Hill", maybe even with a sarcastic tone to start with. lol
So this was the episode that apparently was the last straw for Mick Aston. Only one "expert", labeled vaguely "historian" without any credentials. One can see the loss of investment clearly here - in earlier seasons they would have been digging the sides to find the Iron Age fort and to explain the abnormal symmetry of the hill. Except for the nice computer landscaping there is no real map work, no helicopter views. Mary-Ann probably could have been taught to demonstrate things the way Tony did, but remember the entire production crew had also been changed for this season.
As to the ridiculous music, doesn't anyone else think the traditional background music they used was also ridiculous? The wild-western harmonica and the banjo pieces always made the digging seem like comedy. I noticed those pieces the first time they were introduced, early on, and always thought the music was ridiculous.
lol Lisa I loved that old cheesy background music ... lol i can;t stop laughing but yes, what a sad ending to it all. A friend of Mick's had some interesting comments here on RUclips on another episode that were interesting about it all
So sad that they added more "talent" (i.e., personalities, presenters, call them what you will) instead of more scientists. I don't think the show needed more people to restate the obvious. Let the trained scientists present their findings and get the "spokespeople" out of the way.
Let me guess - your Astroloical Sign is "fixed" not a "mutable" 😉
Can't stand Marianne. Ugliest eye candy useless presenter. Missed Helen Geake and even Carenza, shame they had to ruin a winning cast combo.
Viewers who enjoy TT are not impressed by poorly briefed attractive female presenters.
I just notice that some of the wemen are always showing to their boobs or plumbers crack.
I can't even watch. I don't doubt Mary Ann is an intelligent woman but equally it seems to me the producers were hella keen on not letting her intelligence show. And the eternal grin on her face is just creepy.

If I had teeth like hers, I'd be a grinning fool. Seriously, though, it's one of my pet peeves with TV. On the few period shows where they try to get everything correct, the actors still have teeth you could use for flashlights. Game of Thrones drove me crazy with all those peasants with $40,000 in dental implants. It was such a relief to see some of the older actors with true British teeth.
@@lucygray6162 , Perhaps we can, from time to time, have a drawing of Elizabeth Regina I. I've read that her teeth were all black, because, as a wealthy person, she could afford sugar and so black teeth became a status symbol.
Slightly Megan Markle.
The show ran its course and was doomed by these late episodes. The only good comment was they should have had trainees under the presenter Mr.Robinson and lead supervisor Mr. Aston so the public and the team could have gotten used to them as regulars and part of the time team family. And kept all original crew members they shelved.
Best episode of season 19. It took them too long to find their stride. At least Mick was supervising this time.
While I didn’t attend a prestigious uni, or any, for that matter; I have no difficulty understanding the discussions of Mick, Phil, John, etc.
Mick and Phil were a comedy duo!
Helen and Stewart had become the best parts of Time Team... Mary-Ann is too uncomfortable and out of place despite the looks, and Alex is just unlikable and in terms of the information that Stewart would offer and decipher for us, Alex is completely useless...
So many other good Team members gone now.. Phil has been turned into a cliche of himself by production. John Jimmy, the GPS guy, 3D artist/architect, the soil sample lady, Mick the Dig/Twig, Carenza, the original historian, brunette who went blonde and ran several trenches for seasons and became a preservationist, lil Naomi, young Ian being phased out by old Ian, the historical artist chap who was ALWAYS around in the back of every shot with his art board.. Alex even just seems redundant because Matt is a young likeable male... They've removed all personality and flavor from Paul and Guy... but really Helen and Stewart were the clinchers.
Great example of how to kill a show.
They wanted a reprieve and they're relaxing on a beach.
Digging Clams now. 😀
Just have to agree .. .
I agree with on Alex replacing Stewart. It's like someone who is way out of his depth. Strange.
god I miss Victor, ma main man!
45:45 why would someone dig a well beginning at the top of a hill that high? surely it's a long way from the water table and the depth of the well would have to be the height of the hill and then some more...
@alanrtment porter that rhyme is meant to show how silly they were
I've seen a fresh water well dug straight thru granite on a 5 acre spat of land off the east coast of nova Scotia. If you are going to live on an island u have to have water.
Just skip past the bits when Mary Anne speaks, you ain't missing anything
Well, you get the eye candy, but no real insight.
ouch!
Mark too.....
To be fair its not their fault that management did this.
And thus ended Time Team.
Maybe the castle nestled up to the bars and...Vooom!
The quarryman was named England and the landowners Irish! All in Somerset!
Some of my family came from around there to Australia in the later 1800s and their surname is England.
I noticed that too. Wonder where their family was from? 😆
Thanks for posting. Really enjoy these!
I miss Stewart
I just looked at that hill and told myself, "There's my sledding hill"😊
I agree I prefer Stewart. Oh man, what's with the music? just keep with the instrumental music.
Man, Berghaus got product placement like crazy during this whole show's run. I'd have deliberately worn Columbia had I been asked to appear on a episode, just to piss those bastards off lol. Unless they gave me some free stuff, then I would have just, y'know, totally caved and worn it like everyone else obviously did.
But Mick never caved with those rainbow sweaters his mum knitted for him.
***** I love this comment. Every word of it.
Mick's "mum" didn't knit his stripy jumpers. He was asked by one of the producers, after the first series, if he had anything colorful he could wear, and history was made.
+schradeya Except it's nonsense from beginning to end. They got a special price on the fleece jackets and Mick was asked to wear the stripy jumpers.
E! Carroll Noooo! NO WAY! Ohhhhh that just... breaks my heart a little, especially about Mick's silly sweater! Is that really true? I've never heard that, but I'm not British so it's possible that it's common knowledge there that I'm just not privy to...
+schradeya I'm in Utah, USA, and have watched every episode, extra and special, read interviews with the original members of the Team and archaeology reports, and bought three of Mick's books. The truth is out there...
It is so obvious that Mick has no use for tha new lady - why did they keep her?
I can see why Mick was so pissed!
Me too!
Another Diana, mysterious thought of as nice looking and totally boring
Mary-Anne =Yoko Ono,not her fault but...
lol! ... sadly
Just fast forward thru the annoying parts. Kind of reminds me of a recent ex-royal.
I loved Mick and his archeology team…..not liking the pretty boy and girl trying to sell “tickets” to the show!! Let the real diggers do their magic!!!
Did not realise this was season 19 when I clicked on the video and just could not make it past the 10 minute mark. The show is just hollowed out a shadow of what it was just a few years before

England must be the most beautiful country on earth!!
By 'England' ....I think you mean Scotland :o)
I have seen beautiful places on almost every episode but must say they can keep London.
British People think everywhere in Britain is nice, it's bollocks, there are lots of beautiful places but get real, Scotland is however a special place i agree
USA! USA! USA!
Interesting bit on how they quarried the stone . . but I wish they would have showed more of the "henge" in the background.
Lactic acid in beer????

What's the story behind that wall in their Courtyard there cuz that looks pretty interesting
Shows this 19th season seem lacking.
Why did she say "forced labor" when talking about the 12centure war and building the structure on the hill,,, I didn't hear that from the expert when talking about it, that was the "hired help" that said that. There are hints in this episode that shows that the team is sick of Entertainments Company calling the shots I believe,, Show has a different flavor beside the BBC hired help.
Hired by a sword at your back.
Stop thinking modern with pridgouus please 🙏 😊
I'm first watching a piece of the Time Team. Can anyone tell me something about everything in doing the parts has changed (I'm sitting in Berlin)?
Hallo uw1955, was genau möchten Sie denn wissen?
Hi uw1955, what is it you would like to know?
It's quite difficult to understand your question.
I presume you wanted to say, that this was the first time you have been watching Time Team. But it is impossible to work out what you would like to ask. I am not critcising your English, we have all started once, but I doubt your question can be answered this way.
....do you have 5 hours to explain it?
At the point in history that the site is dated at, wells on top of the hills, under the keep are quite normal.
what's with the crap music?
There’s Mick with that same ole pastel striped sweater lmao 😂😂🤣🤣
theres more than one... and his wife made them I believe.
it's only pastel now because it has faded over the years, probably!
I have seen many episodes and there have been several, as in Barra, that a lot if delicate items and bones have been found and partially uncovered in the 3 days you have on camera. What happens to the sites and finds after the Time Team leaves? Who takes over in the work to complete the dig then? Or does ANYONE?
Of course the site is taken care of.
Well, if nothing else, the Normans produced some decent architecture. Unfortunately, they destroyed a lot of equally good and often superior architecture in the process.
We use similar technology to Ushed to map radio transmitter coverage.

Do we know that Stuart and Helen weren't asked back? Carenza apparently left to pursue other interests. Maybe they took teaching positions or something that didn't allow them to continue. That said, something went down that Mick didn't like, and I doubt it was just the addition of another presenter. Note: I love Stuart. Don't know why. Just do. Hard to know what went down, if ratings dropped, that would have meant budget cuts and emergency triage, like format changes. I've been binge-watching these, but I can see how the casual viewers might have lost interest. They all seem to blend together after a while, and a lot of Brits don't give two shakes about history.
mechanicalmusic Yes, that is common knowledge. Mick Aston left because he was the lead archaeologist, and the production droids AXED half of the team *without consulting him* in any way.
The production was moved from England to Wales and a lot of people didn't make the move. The 3 day format is because most of them have "real" jobs and they chose not to relocate. Stewart and Helen are still in some, as is Guy. They seem to be there if there is a specific need for their area of expertise/interest. Carenza left years ago because of health issues.
Pissed Mick off for dumbing down the format with Marianne. Can't stand her. Shame they had to ruin a great format with ugly eye candy chasing ratings. Miss Mick terribly and Robin. The new show was crap too.

Hallo Nicole, Ich wolllte wissen, was für einen Ärger es gegeben hat, daß die Kritik hier über das neue Time-Team so hart war. Ist es weil die Producer das alte Team hinausgedrängt haben?
Uli
Hallo Uli.
Scheint so.
Never change a winning Team. Und das darf man wirklich nicht tun. Du hast !"Wetten das . . ." angeführt, da wurde gewechselt und Markus Lanz hat den Karren an die Wand gefahren. Ein prominenter Name allein reicht infach nicht aus, das was man da machen soll muß man auch können.
Und ob die Sendung gestoppt wurde kann ich auch nicht sagen. Leider kann ich Channel4 hier in Deutschland nich sehen.
Viele Grüße aus Berlin
Uli
with such thick walls it might be a castle!
Mary Anne catches to much flak, its not her fault that the producers of the show decided to change the format.
...hmmm I wondered this myself then i thought if i were approached to be a host on a long running show and sat down for a moment and thought of the implications of my new role, i think id pass... "see that family reunion picnic over there that has occurred for the past 20 years? Walk over, grab a corner of the blanket the food is set upon and give it a good yank"
I watched this carefully, because THAT WOMAN was an irritant....landowner last name “Irish” quarryman last name “England”....follow my theory:
Flyover footage shows a landslide very near Phil’s big trench, it looks to be fairly old, perhaps timely to building failure. Irish has a 6ft stone wall in the background of the 3 minute mark. How about it was an attempt at a longhouse that a landslide undermined?
They did in Dover!

I wonder if another reason it was never completed is because they could never hit the water table while digging the well?,

Mick explains to Tony how his thick timber was surrounded by a tightly packed mound
How tall is Mary-Anne? 6'?
7 feet 8 inches
Tony may want to seriously consider legally changing his name to Negative Nancy!! At times he makes hard to watch the show!!
They need to spend longer on each site. Three days is simply not enough.
Jana Oh 1) It’s called survey archaeology; it’s not intended to be a full-on months-long excavation. That’s not what they’re there for. 2) Most of the field archaeologists are professionals and academics who have other responsibilities during the week- teaching classes, etc.
Mary Ann has such pretty skin.
Why don’t we give them 5 days. They are always about to find something but never have enough time 😑
why three days?
...on the fourth day they rested, except for Phil the Human Digging Machine
The archaeologists are professionals and many are academics. They have jobs to go to during the week.
Why do these reality programs always set an arbitrary timeline for completion of their projects. From auto restoration to archeological projects, it is not necessary to make it appear urgent to viewers.
The 3 day limit was the entire premise of the show. When it was first being discussed Mick was asked how long to get decent archaeology and he said he reckoned 3 days would be enough.
This is not arbitrary, all these people have week time jobs
Budget.
All this complaining is pathetic. The girl presenter should make all the people complaining about Tony. Amazed show made it this far.

...the same way decorators think of that deadline on those reno shows... i dig, i get it but....
Why would they think anything? It’s called survey archaeology. Kind of like exploratory surgery, the goal is to find out what’s there, or find out what they are asked to determine. Their work isn’t intended to be a full-on excavation that could last for months. Once they do the exploration work, then either the a question is resolved and there’s nothing that needs done further, or the local county archeological society continues the long- term excavation.
