Those three upper tabs determine the proper distance spacing top bumper to hood. Recommend before pulling them out mark current position of those three tabs. That way when installing new grille you'll know how far insert those tabs. I replaced those rivets with automotive screws held in place with clips. Looks really nice OEM. Better than those pain in the ass rivets. This way in the future need to remove front bumper it will make things a bit easier. Thanks Chase for sharing.
@@akosilakas That's a good question. I'm having my old grille swab with the new diamond grille in a few weeks. A custom detail shop will help me removing the bumper to do the swab. I'll see if those three tabs can be used.
@@akosilakas Going to have a custom shop help me with the grille swap end of Jun. They will remove the bumper since they do this all the time with other high end vehicles. Unfortunately I won't be able to make a video of the process. However, I will try to provide video after the install with some comments how they did the install. I will post it on my youtube channel Joe A.
Took a few hands to help but just completed my install. Looks great. Was a little tough getting the new grill in under the bumper clips but got it done. Thanks for making this video and showing that it’s possible
Dude, i did the same on my 2016, no chance in Hxxx to do it without taking of the bumber. So many rivits have to be drilled out, than you have to take of or out other plastic peaces that hold the grill in the bottom + remove the foam peace that goes across the inside of the bumber. What is needed here is just to take out few plastic clips in the wheal housing and some screws and the bumber is of. Never done it before, and it took me 3,5-4 hours in total, to figure out each detail by looking in the manuel etc. And you have to rivit the grill back on, it will not work with any kind of screws. Lot of work i would say.
Someone just hit my grill while I was in my house. And now I need to replace it myself. Can I send you a pic of what it looks like and you can tell me what grill I need and if it's more then a grill I need to replace
Wow finnaly a video for the facelift 212 ... I have a 2015 e400 sedan and been dying to change that ugly 2 slab grill but been hesitant....I wish u shot a actual video of the removal 😪. But thanks for the heads up about the non removal of the bumper cover ... Thanks ..I'll subscribe and once I get the grill I'll b emailing you lol
There is absolutely no point whatsoever to change the grill without removing the bumper. The complete bumper removal took me as an amateur about 1 hour, the rebuild was the same. Changing the grill itself, about 1,5-2 hours. And I saw right away that it could be done a lot faster with the complete bumper on the floor. Thanks for the video though, it was sorta helpful..
I'm half way through this job. I've got the bumper off, GTR/panamerica grill in (with a bit of a gap at the bottom of the chrome). The Mercedes star badge does not fit the GTR grill. I've tried for hours, spun it every direction. The clips on the back are nowhere near touching and the star doesn't even want to fit in. Car is 2013 e400 with the "amg" 2 horizontal line factory grill. Did you have to get a new star badge (mine has distronic, so just plastic badge), or did you modify the original? Any tips greatly appreciated and I will attack it again and hopefully finish it tomorrow. What a nightmare of a job!!
So it’s just the rivets up top and clips down below? Just received mine but a little hesitant. I wanted to know if that’s the only things holding the grill in place?
If you take off the bumber, is it realy neccesary to take of the chrome/steel trim if you have full access to a grill from the inside and only want to replace it with a same new one? Why removing steel rivets?
Can the luxury style grill be installed after the sport one you have is removed? I can't find any videos on anyone doing that for this particular model
So if you are talking about the chrome frame bezel that goes around the outside perimeter of the grill just take a plastic tool like shown and start at the top. Wedge the tool between the chrome frame and the car and it will start coming off. There are no screws. Just about 20 small clips.
There are 4 torx T10 across the inside of the grill holding on the chrome outer ring. You can probably snap them and remove the grill without removing the bumper as this guy has.
So with the steel rivets . You basically just drill them out and I'm assuming they get replaced with the new rivets that come with the new grill ?.. also my OEM grill has the OEM illuminated star .. any info on removal of that? Is is jut a simple harness connection? Thanks
Also, dont do this method. Even if you get all this stuff off, there is not enough space to pull the grill out. The grill has a lip that is under the bumper cover and the foam behind bumper prevents any extra room. I tried this method and ended up having to remove the full bumper to finish the job.
Recently installed my diamond grille on my 2016 E400 W212 and yes removing the bumper is the correct way doing this. That chrome ring trim around the ground does have 4 tiny screws located behind the grille. Yeah you can prey lose the chrome ring trim with a plastic trim tool but you'll be breaking off the tiny screws. I posted a video in my channel of the end result of installation.
You think I took the bumper off... Removed the grille... Re-installed the bumper... Shot the video... Then installed the bumper... Put the new grille in and then re-installed the bumper for a second time?! Genius. You just be a genius.

Can you do this with the 2014 cls model?
Only if you don't have the distronic system and or the sensors up front 👍
Where did you get the side skirt inserts? I literally cannot find them anywhere on the market. A little help would be greatly appreciated :)!
