    I’ve drawn nature all my life but I found myself with no time to draw during my undergrad and master’s degree in biology. I struggled the whole way through from conceiving my study through the publication process, and all this time I keep thinking about how badly I miss making art. You give me inspiration to embrace my real self.

    "I have never drawn before", this..! You have lifted such a big weight off my heart, as I, too, have not much drawn in my life. I’m graduating in biology in 2 months, and had no idea what to do afterwards. Thank you, this is so encouraging!

    Im so glad I stumbled across your video. I’m at a roadblock where I have a Masters degree in Pharmaceutical Medicine with a background of microbiology and biochemistry but I have a romantic affair with art. I have a really strong creative side. I’m currently in an internship program but feel like I’m failing. I feel like I wasted my time studying and I don’t want to damage my career before it could actually begin. I’ve been doing some research on how I can combine science and art and came across being a science illustrator. The transition is difficult especially in South Africa. But your video does give me hope to pursue it. Thank you very much.

      Hi Deidre, trust your gut feeling and go for what you feel right for you. It will be very rewarding regardless of the outcome. I have faced insanely difficult challenges because of my decision to become a scientific illustrator while living in a foreign country. However, the funny thing is, I have since then felt that I am doing what I am suppose to be doing. It makes me feel very alive and grateful for all of the experiences, both good and bad. So I strongly suggest everyone to take the leap to do whatever they feel like doing. Everything is "figureoutable" once you set off on the journey. I took this word from #MarieForleo. I can relate to this message and what Jon is saying. I'm also in South Africa, almost done with my honours in Plant Pathology and after having a taste of what research is like (literally exactly what Jon said), I really want to try and combine art and Plant Pathology. I want to make these complex scientific articles more understandable to farmers and I have soooooo many ideas. Just not sure where to start. There is like NO ONE studying Plant Path (which is crazy - food pandemics are real and no one is trying to prevent them). And I can't study anything else now. But have taught myself a lot of things (illustration, design video editing, like literally anything creative), but am not using the right tools/ apps... Like I'm am using powerpoint for graphic designing, don't have money for other tools. So yes... I would love to hear tips about how to start without money for classes and apps.

      I'm a CGI illustrator with a background in architecture, which has a little in common with your background. I'm also self taught. The thing that helped me early on was to develop a portfolio (not a very big one) and then start marketing it by reaching out to companies that I thought would have a need for my kind of illustrations. At first it was very hit or miss, but I did start to get projects here and there. I continued to work my regular job for security. Yeah, I was working like 60 -70 hours a week sometimes. But after a year or so I finally got the courage to go off on my own and it worked. . . ! I hope this helps a little. I'm in U.S., can you describe why this transition is especially difficult in South Africa?

    Hi Jon. I really liked your video. I'm a PhD candidate and I'm facing the anxiety you mentioned. I studied Molecular Biology and did my Master's in Medical Neurosciences at Charite in Berlin. For my PhD, I've shifted to Machine Learning in Neuroimaging. So I've changed my field and transitioned into what I wanted when I was studying my Master's. Just to realize it's not meant for me. I've been drawing for almost all my life. I do surrealistic works and sometimes I use inspirations from neuroscience. The interesting thing is, when someone sees my artwork they assume I studied art and when I say I'm a PhD student doing deep learning with MRI scans they seem so confused like I'm talking about someone completely different. On the other hand, when I show a drawing to some of my colleagues, they ask why am I doing this PhD then? It's a really stressful situation. Specially because I've come so far it's hard to let go. To be honest, all I really want to do in life is creating art but it's not easy living off of. So right now I'm seriously thinking about my options. Would I have to do another master's or bachelor's degree to get into scientific illustration or taking some courses will be enough to find a job?

    • @DrawBioMed
      @DrawBioMed  4 года назад +2

      Hi Shahryar, I am happy to get your message! I actually have given a workshop to the PhDs at
      Charité (Einstein Center of Neurosciences) last year. I had a really good time with the PhD students there. Photo in the link shorturl.at/cnZ56
      To answer your question very quickly. You don't need a degree to be a freelance scientific illustrator. I know multiple people who are doing that.
      For jobs, I suggest you to contact AMBOSS in Berlin. They are a medical education content company that needs many different talents including scientific illustrator. You can see what kind of skills they need and start building them, which is the homework I wish I had done while transitioning in the scientific illustration career haha. I actually just filmed a video about this very topic on whether you need a degree. Stayed tuned ;)
      You are right about it is very difficult living off of art. That being said, I alway suggest people to live by the "no regret" policy, because that prevents people from becoming bitter and resentful. My decision of becoming a scientific illustrator has made my life extremely challenging, but I feel that I am doing exactly I am suppose to be doing in every second. Evaluate your own risk tolerance and just do whatever your intuition tells you to do.

      I just found out that my girlfriend was at that workshop! :D so I was looking at the Maastricht's program. But if I can learn the essential skills by taking courses I'd rather stay here in Berlin, finish my studies and learn those skills on the side. If you can recommend any courses it would be great. I really look forward to that video :) I think it would be very helpful. Thanks for the help.

    Hi Jon,
    Thank you for sharing your story. It's really fascinating the way the images are illustrated inyour videos.
    I did my bachelor's and master's in biotechnology, now I'm first year Ph.D student in the field of computational and structural biology.
    I came across your videos while searching for ways to improve the figures in my research articles. I've always held a deep appreciation for art and possess some drawing skills. In fact, my PI, who is also an art enthusiast and carver, encourages my artistic approach and he always encourages all of us to have figures like those seen in Nature journals. He even recently introduced me to Photoshop basics.
    After seeing your work, I'm more confident in my artistic potential for scientific illustration. I'd be incredibly grateful if you could offer some advice on how to excel in this field. Your efforts in raising awareness and inspiring others like me are commendable.

      The more I know about you the better advice I can offer. Heidelberg is such a lovely city! I visited there last year. Can you also tell me how it is like studying/doing research there? Super curious.

    Hello! Thank you for interesting video! Is it difficult to find a job as a medical illustrator in America, in Europe, in a freelance?
    Is it important to have an education in medical illustration or is it more important to have a good partfolio?

    • @DrawBioMed
      @DrawBioMed  4 года назад +3

      Hi Margarita! Most medical illustrator works as freelancers, as far as I know. Indeed, it is quite difficult to find a conventional "9-5 job" as a scientific illustrator, because there is no industry for this niche yet. I know there are alumni from my master program who works at Leiden University, Maastricht Uni, AMBOSS Inc./Miamed GmbH in Germany, St John's Uni in Greneda who are in a regular position. The portfolio is more important. I know a few MDs started the craft without a degree in medical illustration.

    Hi Jon, I’m Emily! I’ll get a bachelor’s degree in biological science in Italy, and I’m very curious about this medical illustration profession because I’m keeping my passion for drawing only as a hobby. I’ve never heard of it before and I would like to ask you if you know if this profession also exists in Italy and if there is any course to follow? Thank you, I’ve really enjoyed this video!

      Hi Emily! There use to be one at the University of Bologna, which was actually the oldest one in Europe. They are no longer operating as far as I know. You can still go ask them. Let me know how it is now when you find out :)

I also interested on applying scientific illustration in netherlands after I finished my postgrad study. So, any advise for applying to Maastricht? Is my degree eligible? Is the admission competitive?

      For the Maastricht program they accept both people from science and art background. Though It is better to email the the programs to confirm with them.
