      it wasn't the drivers complete fault, and he was acquitted, he put on 7 brakes. you can follow all the rules, but if the company doesn't maintain the equipment it's only a matter of time.

      @@drift318company policy contradicted the Canadian Railway Operating Rules though... I'm sitting here at the monument now, and I work on the railway. It's a pretty somber experience...

    I wonder when transport Canada will be held responsible. They authorized single man train crews which is not safe, you can’t do some of the safety tests to make sure your train is secure with just an engineer. Yet transport Canada approved running trains like this.

    trains should have breaking systems that engage automatically when the train is shut off, not parking brakes that need to be engaged manually.

    • @KOLANI
      @KOLANI Год назад +14

      here's the thing. they do, and this one does too. but that's only if the airbrakes disconnect suddenly. however the power was disengaged on the main engine by fire men because there was an engine fire. that caused the pressure to release slowly and it didn't engage the emergency brakes. there were not nearly enough handbrakes for the weight of the train and it just went down.

    • @Ass_of_Amalek
      @Ass_of_Amalek Год назад +1

      @@KOLANI that sounds like a clearly not fail-safe system

    • @KOLANI
      @KOLANI Год назад +4

      @@Ass_of_Amalek if the guy had used handbrakes instead of the engine's airbrakes this wouldn't have happened. airbrakes are great cuz it makes the train stop if a car decouples from the train cuz it cuts off the airbrakes and puts the train into emergency stop. it's just the guy didn't take that into account when putting on the brakes for the night which is terrible

    • @paulmustermann7068
      @paulmustermann7068 Год назад +5

      The train operator DID apply some handbrakes, 5 in total, but the train was parked on a slight slope and he had to apply at least double the amount of handbrakes. It's the combination of offline airbrakes, too few handbreaks and a sloped terrain that caused this accident.
      This is what I heard in another documentary.

    • @Traumatree
      @Traumatree 11 месяцев назад

      The train was left with the engine running as the company instructed the engineers to do, because otherwise, the train itself (the wagons) automatically brakes on all its lenght if no pressure it put to release the brakes.

    TLDR, the dude followed company rules(which were against federal laws, but still), was overworked and exhausted, and still expressed concern to both the firefighters and his colleague.
    (Train had a smoke and overheating issue, stopped for the night, brakes were put on, but the test was done with both air brakes and dynamic brakes. Fine by the company he had enough dynamics by their rules, but not fine legally as he was on a slope and air brakes are active not passive. He goes to sleep and leaves, fire breaks out in the engine filter, firefighters put it out, this cuts the power which disables the air brakes. He offers to come check it out, co worker and firemen say it's fine. Hour or two later the air brakes have mostly bled off and the dynamics can't hold it on a hill alone. Rolls downhill, derails at the curve through downtown, downtown gets wiped off the map)

    MMA and its Canadian subsidiary entered Chapter 11/CCAA bankruptcy protection in August 2013 as a direct result of the Lac-Mégantic rail disaster, a runaway train incident in July 2013 which resulted in an estimated $200 million in damage and the deaths of 47 people.

      Le conducteur a misnles freins sur 7 wagons et locomotives. Il a laissé une locomotive avec le moteur allumé pour garder un soutien de freins a air mais il a eu un feu dans le moteur. Les pompiers ont fermés la locomotive, faisant en sorte qu’ils n’y avait plus de freins à air. C’est pas de sa faute.
