      @@DavidTipton101 Well, from the point of view of the electronics repair you may be right. But your ingenuity and attention to detail in approaching the repair of plastics, wood, rubbers, brackets, perishing insulation and anything else you lay your hands on, is worth watching just for those aspects too! Your videos are incredibly satisfying. I will say, though, that I am the kind of guy who hates to throw things away that could be refurbished. I don't belong to this throw-away world! Neither do you, clearly!

      That "quality unit" as you call it was not cheap in those days. Germany was just barely recovering from WWII and the Wirtschaftswunder had brought prosperity to a great deal of Germans. The better off could afford to buy such cabinets while common people bought a small transistor radio. Considering its age this combination is in a really good state also because it was Made in Germany.

    i really like the effect of the new scale background, so fresh/bright looking :-D
    i don't think it would look as good as that from new.
    It's nice to see you have an easyer time fixing a radio, not a pain in the bum in comparison to some of the others you have restored.
    You and your neat bracket making, so many times you have made them look original.
    I appreciate nicely hand made parts, it's a skill that less and less people have :-(.
    If the radio was case less, i bet that chassis would look nice in a normal tabletop radio case.
    Imagination working for no reason :-D

    Looking forward to this one, David! A small note to all viewers, when handling a Grundig chasis, be careful of the selenium rectifier on the side of it. Back in the late 60s I built a stereo amplifier from a circuit in Practical Wireless which used the ECLL800 output valve (two push-pull output valves in one bottle, a little like 2 x EL84s). I remember when I went to my local electronics shop the guy refused to believe there was such a valve and insisted I needed an ECL80. Only when I went back and showed him the article did he do some research and grudgingly admit he was wrong. It continued to be a bit of an obscurity and I'm delighted to see it again in this Grundig set.

    Hi Dave. Great job. A couple of things I'd like to mention. You can't simply determine the dissipation of that resistor by measuring the average D.C. voltage across it, as the current waveform is in the form of pulses. To do that correctly, you need a true RMS meter that also takes into account any D.C. component. The actual dissipation will be considerably more that an average D.C. voltage would suggest. Also, I can suggest why your home made "litz" wire didn't work too well. In actual litz wire, the strands are arranged such that each one is in places running along the surface of the bundle, and in other places more towards the centre. It is to minimize the "skin" effect, of a wire carrying RF current. I hope that helps. 😊

    • @highpath4776
      @highpath4776 3 года назад +1

      does that explain the sensititivity (or lack of?) , so factory would have woven with some kind of moving shuttle

    • @DavidTipton101
      @DavidTipton101  3 года назад

      Hi Stuart, thank you. Good point, I have a true RMS meter but whether it takes into account the DC component I don't know. I can still touch the resistor without the heatsink so it's running cool enough.
      My faux Litz wire was a hasty decision and I later realised that is isn't twisted and as you say it's laid in a specific way. There is a Wikipedia article on it which I will read at some point. Thanks again Stuart 👍🙂

    Great radio you've got David!
    The amp is stereo for the turntable and (probably) the tape recorder.
    One tip: sometimes the polystyrene capacitors can fail, the failure is that they get intermittent (the leads will lose the contact with the foil).
    I had one capacitor like that that was intermittently killing one of the shortwave bands, moving it slightly would bring the band back.
    It is always great to see how you come up with solutions to make things look neat, Love your videos!

    Funny what flashes through one's mind when you see a video such as this posted. First, of course is joy at a new video, it always seems as though your video's are almost like having coffee with a friend, then there is the familiarity with the name, David, ("David and Goliath" cartoons on Sunday Morning here in the US sponsored by the Lutheran Church - A boy and his dog story in puppet form teaching not just religion, but living the just and good life,) Davy Jones (Singer in the 60's) Dave Nelson, a buddy of mine in Vietnam (wonder what ever became of him?) and many other David's that I got to know in my 70 years haunting this old earth of ours. Thanks a million for giving me something to eat up some of the uncountable hours that God keeps piling on my plate to be spent trying to make the world a bit better place.

    Hi David. That is a really nice project you have there probably from around 1962/65. In the UK we got the FM version and my late uncle had one, and the sound was superb. The auto record deck was rubbish when playing recordings with plenty of bass in the music. I put a Garrard sp25 into my uncle's radiogram and it performed very well. My school never did work out where their turntable went, that was back in the 70s. Look forward to seeing the next episode. Cheers Chris.

    David, that kind of a chassis surface gave me a problem with a tube socket. The sockets metal rings are also connecting ground to different connections. The FM first stage/oscillator tube had an intermittent problem with shifting frequency 1 MHz. ALTHOUGH the tube socket connection had also its own ground with a firm wire to the tuning capacitor ground, the chassis or its layer was oxidated (not visible) between the chassis and the socket (connected with the hollow rivets). Somehow a ground loop was made by that, and disturbed the FM oscillator. I had to drill it out, put in a screw and nut, and after that SOLDER it all solid to the chassis before I got the FM stable. When I heard your intermittent pre-amp problem I thought of that first.

      @Ragnar8504 3 года назад

      @@DavidTipton101 ERO100 are paper caps that had the ends dipped in some kind of epoxy, which is quite deceiving but doesn't improve matters much. Kondur (a manufacturer I know absolutely nothing about, except that Philips Austria used their products in many of their radios) did the same thing.
      ERO100, Eroid (both manufactured by Roederstein), brown WIMA Tropydur "cough drops", colourful Kondur rolls and blocks and the even brighter, resin-coated Czeija & Niessl capacitors are the ones I throw out immediately in European radios, similar to red and orange Roederstein and yellow or orange Frako electrolytics in newer equipment (70s through early 90s). Blue Philips electrolytics don't have the best reputation either but at least they don't usually short out. Those smaller than 220 µF do tend to drift a lot.
      I don't have a lot of experience with British radios but the few Hunts and Dubillier capacitors I've had were just as bad as the list above, although they were completely encapsulated in some kind of black (Hunts) or blue (Dubillier) plastic.

    It must have been back in 1972, my Army Unit had just been ordered to transfer from our mountain/forest training area around Fort Lewis in Washington State to Desert warfare training at a base called Fort Bliss Texas. My wonderful wife was pregnant with our daughter at the time, when I notified my commander, he gave me the choice. I could transfer to another unit in Fort Lewis, some artillery outfit I believe it was, or go with the Advanced Party for our Unit moving out in just 2 weeks. A brief conversating with my wonderful wife and we decided to go to Fort Bliss. That was a move that I indeed never regretted as we fell in love with the Desert Southwest of these United States! When I got there, the base had been pretty empty for several years. The buildings had suffered for their lack of maintance, so first off we became a cleaning crew. When off duty, my wife and I began exploring the pawn shops that surrounded the Fort. They too had suffered with the movement of troops so their prices were quite low for a hawk shop. That was when I first found Grundig. I purchased a Grundig Reel to Reel recorder/player. It was very high quality but didn't much look like the Teac that I had over in Vietnam. The sound it put out though was fabulous, and I fell in love with that brand name. All while I served in the Army, Grundig was on my shopping list in every pawn shop and thrift store I could find. Over the years many units passed through my hands but at the end of my career, which came while I was out Recruiting in Minnesota I had resold every Grundig unit I ever had. It wasn't until a few years back, perhaps 5 or 6, I don't recall the exact date that Ebay had a nice little Grundig AM/FM/SW travelers radio. It had suffered puppy damage to the back, so the battery cover was gone and a pop out lean support was also filled with puppy teeth marks. I bid on it, and my opening bid brought it home. I found the necessary parts to bring her back into shape and she has served me well. I guess I should say she served my wonderful will well for many years, as once I had it put together, she saw it and instantly fell for it. She had it in her computer desk and used it every day to keep up with the local news on our local AM Station. Now that she has passed on, I retrieved it and cleaned all the grease from it's skin, as she did take it with her to the kitchen many days, it still works like new. The only thing that has failed is the bulb for the dial light. I removed the back cover but could not get to it, and not wanting to do more damage, I simply put it back together and now it rests on my desk, I keep it in the nylon case that it came in, it too has the Grundig label so I am quite sure it is proper for that set. My biggest disappointment, however on receiving it was the label: DESIGNED IN USA> ASSEMBLED IN CHINA! It is still a great little radio and I would not give it up but I miss that MADE IN GERMANY that used to adorn such sets.

    Hi Dave,
    Lovely radiogram you got there! Grundig manufactured some superb radios, televisions, and tape recorders in their day. I’m not surprised most, if not all the resistors measure within spec’. It’s quite possible the West German component manufacturers, as well as the radio and television producers, used the finest of materials. My guess is, when comparing West German manufactured stuff of the 1950s, and 60s with GDR manufactured stuff of that same period, there was barely no contest - West German stuff was always far superior. I remember a few GDR manufactured radios and televisions of the late 1960s: despite being reasonably well built, they generally looked as atrocious as they were reliable - probably the reason they were, along with virtually all Soviet manufactured stuff, “Cheep ‘n’ nasty”.
    What is that signal, or functions generator you use for realignment purposes? It looks to be small but it appears to do a brilliant job!

    David, true Litz is not just parallel strands. It is formed like a rope, eg bundles of multiple strands, then each bundle in turn twisted together. The idea is that each strand spends an equal amount of time in the center and in the outside of the rope, which reduces capacitance between adjacent turns. Bottom line: it's difficult to make you own Litz without the special winding machine.

For some reason I couldn't get it to open and the second best option according to many was Shotcut. It's also much easier for beginners so I ran with that. I think now with a better understanding of what's required that I'm ready to try DaVinci developed by our neighbours across the ditch. Looking forward to next week, you really are doing a magnificent job with restorations. Cheers.

      @@grahamserle7930 Thanks Graham, DaVinci is a steep learning curve and the free version works well. I will start producing with it in a month or so when I get comfortable with it.

    I was wondering if you thought you could "reinstate" the FM section (even though it was never added)?

      Hi Brian, it's pretty unusual in Oz, although I have seen a few since I got mine, that's always the way. It would be much to difficult to refit the FM, certainly more than I could be bothered with. I could fit Bluetooth 🙂

    I waited specifically until after dinner so I could legitimately sit down with a bowl of ice cream and enjoy this vid as a part of my evening. As ever, I am *NOT* disappointed. As for twisting the wire - It's not pointless if you learned something, even if that something was that your action was pointless because you already had what you needed.
    My brain went there after your beginning description, so just out of dumb curiosity: Could you add FM to that radio? Would it be AT ALL reasonable to do so? Would you need extra tubes and tuning... bits? Is there room on the chassis? Would you need to make an all new dial, or just a retrofit? I think I know most of the answers already. But, you know....

    • @DavidTipton101
      @DavidTipton101  3 года назад

      A bowl of ice cream and a video, what more could you want 😀 The chassis is made for FM but not fitted so it would be possible to do but would require a lot of parts. I can fit Bluetooth which has none of the problems you mentioned and I can stream FM or streaming music, that might be an option 🙂

      @@DavidTipton101 Nah. No Bluetooth for the Grundig. No one sane would want that for that particular radio. I've been toying with designing and building a new entertainment console with all the mod cons (and some older ones). Bluetooth would work there. But a classic like yours only deserves tubes and string dials and such.
      Thanks.

      Thank clasicradiolover, we did not have FM when this was imported so no FM is fitted, I was hoping it had been brought over by an individual from Europe and may have FM. If you mean you expected me to fit FM, it did cross my mind but there are no dial markings and it would be a big job, it would be easier to fit Bluetooth 🙂

      @@DavidTipton101 I suppose so. I've always been interested in boards and chassis that had the space for an alternative circuit some that seemed as if one or two components added would add a feature to the system. In some Citizen Band radios there are simple modifications to add channels or increase power output.

      @@highpath4776 The ECLL800 is a push-pull output valve and a triode preamp as well. There is also ECC83 dual triode before the two ECLL800 acting as a preamp. So the signal goes through one half the ECC 83 then to the ECLL800 preamp into the push-pull output per channel. I don't know if there is a similar valve that could be engineered to replace the ECLL800.
