Such a shame Escobar was so badly tarnished by this play. He was a great footballer who made a mistake while trying to defend against a very possible US goal. The reality is that USA may very well have scored anyway had he not touched the ball (see the US player open beyond Escobar during the cross pass - but who knows). I originally recorded this game on my VCR. It was not until after Escobar's murder that I went back and reviewed the tape. I must have rewound it a million times. Even now, after seeing this RUclips version, I'm still saddened by his pale face after that goal. And after seeing it again and again, I think he must have known what was waiting for him when he got home. Even more sad, are some of the comments I see here, and how this game (this play) can still cause such political and social divisiveness so many years later. Football (or any sport) should never be worth the price Andres Escobar paid...
Poor Andres...I wish he never went back to Colombia after that loss. He died over a mistake and because money was involved. Such a evil world we live in. RIP
As a USA fan and American ,I remember how happy I was we won this game, but back then I nor America hadn't known the details that transpired before or after the game. Today I have nothing but respect for Andres and his teammates. Andres really displayed true honor and character. I kind of wished we lost that game to Colombia, thanks to these documentaries, the world knows the real story, the truth, and Colombia keeps honoring a real hero.
So many things are change here in Colombia, it's not a bad country, I invited you coming here and you dont want to go, cuz the love of the people make that you feel as home.
I remember IMMEDIATELY after the game thinking it was justice for us, as we felt we were screwed by the ref disallowing Lalas's goal (he was NOT offside). However, we felt horrible for him after we heard about his death. That was so wrong.
Its really sad for me as a colombian, i remember watchin this game and seeing that i coudlnt believe it i was mad at 1st but after i got over it, when i heard about his death all i did was cry and watched all his games he played, he lost a great hero, he lost a create player, he lost a person that showed loved for his country and his team. Now im planning to get a tattoo of him, in memory of Andres Escobar...WE MISS YOU QUE VIVA COLOMBIA
@ramosxp you said it exactly right. as an american i now wish we would not have won against colombia. Unbelievable pressure they were under and it was not fair. i could never imagine that kind of pressure.
That's true I've been so programmed associating Colombia with just cocaine trafficking and exploitation by oil companies that I was kind of shocked when a Colombian friend of mine showed me in pictures the city of Medellin when he went home and it was one of the most beautiful places I have ever seen - clean, colorful and lush looks like a real paradise. In 2012 there should be other documentaries made because I hope Colombia has moved ahead from what it was in the 90s. Much love from Bulgaria
@SuoBella an "own goal" is when you put the ball in you own net. The player is credited with the goal and it goes into the stats as an "own goal" So Escobar was credited with the goal, not the last US player to touch it.
this film came out in 2010 but those Maturana interviews are from anytime from 1995-1997. You can see Maturana wearing the Ecuador national team polo. He coached them from 95 to 97.
Escobar sacrificed his life for the US player right of him who would inevitable hit the pass for a score. Would they had sent an 'Alberto the Shadow' to do the job? If every athletic, who fight for his country, get paid by his country in such way, then the days of sport as I have them in memories, are counted.
@grahamgrider I suppose it's a matter of opinion,we judge our heroes by different standards. I called him one not because he got killed, but because even in defeat, he left such a legacy of how to be loyal to your country, to handle pressure and adversity but still be humble regardless . We're still talking about a losing team 15+ years later, but at least now we know more than what the score was. Ironic that an Escobar began to change the country for the better, glad Andres will be remembered.
A bit confusing. On one hand, I read in wikipedia that the death threat had also been received before the match against Romania. But then in 4.15, this video said that there was too much party in the team hotel (describing over-confidence). I am really sorry but this video (and wiki) are bit confusing for me. How come people had too much party and in the same time the people received death threat. I mean if wikipedia is correct if the death threat is also received before match against Romania.
@pedrojosetrujillo92 That's a silly thing to say. Regardless of whether or not he stood up for himself, he was killed for scoring an own goal. Had he not scored the goal, there wouldn't have been a conflict. You make it sound like he was asking for it just cause he stood up for himself.
that was just one part of the big problem colombia had in the 90´s, that was a bad decade, fortunately colombia has changed a lot since the last 10 years
there was no death threat prior to the Romania match. The death threat came after the loss to Romania. The gamblers did not want Gabriel Gomez to play in the USA match. Gomez played 90 minutes against Romania. The partying was prior to the Romania match. The threats were prior to the USA match.
Una tristeza a donde llega la gente sin corazon que descanses en paz Andres Escobar. Que Dios te tenga en su santa gloria Que Dios bendiga a nuestro mundo y que toda la gente mala sea buena
If someone could please clarify....what does "own goal" mean, I"m not a soccer follower/player and am ignorant as to what this means, sorry. I saw another documentary on Columbian soccer and this infamous goal was mentioned, but I didn't quite understand why it's called "own" meaning he scored a goal for the U.S. team? Please help, thank you!
@M40snip wasn't "some drunk" it was the Gallon brothers, former Medellin Cartel members who turned their backs and joined Los Pepes. They were high on being part of destroying Pablo Escobar and felt that no one could talk back to them. That was the only reason they killed Andres Escobar, he talked back to them. their bodyguard was later prosecuted for the murder instead of them after they bought off the prosecutors office with the help of Carlos Castano.
Andres Escobars death, believe it or not, did not have much to do with his own goal...he just went out at night to a dangerous zone in Colombia and raised his voice (you have to understand he's a pro athlete, he had at least a bit of an ego) at the wrong people at the wrong time at the wrong place...That's all...I have strong reasons to believe my sources more than this documentary
The moment Andreas Escobar turned round after scoring own goal he knew something going happen to him you can tell by look on face. Maybe not killed but he knew something was going happen Just a dam game football
nice country pride..so do they train for home games in bullet proof vests?i know its not all coumbia but tht majority tht caused this death its sick..would scare you to play for your country..an playing for your country is suppose to be the biggest honour in football?...truely shocking..r.i.p... shame when ur career is remmebered for such a faith...
@buaysong why dont you look up all of the information? Colombia was one of the best teams in the world at the time, in fact most picked them to win the '94 world cup... and the country was making millions upon millions of dollars from soccer, not just "a few dollars"
I'm sure Colombia has other nice features, but it's hard to get over the fact that for most of the 90s it was world leader in cocaine production, murder and kidnapping for ransom. Right up there with post-Apartheid South Africa and Haiti in terms of crime rate.
That's like if Hasslebaink playing for Chelsea got murdered by a Chelsea hooligan for scoring an own goal at Newcastle in 2002-03. Didn't happen of course but that wud be a Premier League version of Escobar's fate!
The last words he heard were 'Thanks for the own goal' at gunpoint. don't believe me, search it up. I wouldn't play football in Colombia if I was a pro after this incident, Id give it a few years. The aftershock is still around it. It was an unlucky O.G anyway.
I am at absolute disbelief at how condescending this journalist is towards Colombia. I am aware of Colombia's violent past, but it never escalated to the points in which this journalist claims. Although there was a substantial amount of crime occurring during the reign of Pablo Escobar, the numbers were nowhere close to 80 murders a week. I also noticed how the story drifted away from "Escobar's own goal" to "Look how shitty of a country colombia is". The description is irrelevant to the story!
@SurvivorFromKansas yeah, after the first game they lost many players were getting death threats from colombian drug lords becasue they betted so much money on them and to lose, so when escobar scored his own goal i think he knew he was dead
este video fue subido en el 2010.. creo ke es una falta de respeto el ke subio este video al categorizar la ciudad de Medellin como una de las mas peligrosas de mundo.. por favor aclare ke fue en los anos 80 - 90 ... gracias I believe you need to have some respect categorizing Medellin as one of the most dangerous cities in the world, you uploaded this video in 2010, this happened on the 90.s.
we will never know...the American player might have flopped and kicked it out, and it would've have been one of the greatest misses. Or the Columbian Keeper might have blocked it. Or it probably would've straight went past all of them...OR OR OR OR OR. We will never know. R.I.P Andres Escobar!
I know alot about him so if you want to know somthing here it is andres went out his friend said not to because every one was raving about the goal after a couple hours he was walking to his car when people from the other escobars gang came up and shot him if you want to see how I know this look up 50/50 but it has to be about him trust me there's no way you won't cry I know I did RIP
why is everyone arguing its only a fucking game. He didn't deserve to die for it !
I know, it's not fair.
sad, because he really looked like a normal down to earth guy.
He was a good man.
Such a shame Escobar was so badly tarnished by this play. He was a great footballer who made a mistake while trying to defend against a very possible US goal. Andres should of stayed in America.
I remember watching that live. Even at my age (junior high), I knew he was a dead man.
The comment section of this video is disgraceful. So much hatred and vitriol.
sk m Go fuck yourself
sk m Screw you. Simply Put
I agree. It makes me sick
surely if you knew what it was like in Colombia, you would never return, and you would run straight off the pitch to tell your family where to run to.
As a USA fan and American ,I remember how happy I was we won this game, but back then I nor America hadn't known the details that transpired before or after the game. Thanks for posting this! It seems like every subject that I want to explore has a documentary on youtube
Awesome story...thank you for posting
wow..look at the goalies reaction he knew..
Excellent journalistic work!
Yea let's lay down some death threats before the game....that always get the boys pepped up. No wonder mistakes were made under that kind of pressure.
So many things are change here in Colombia, it's not a bad country, I invited you coming here and you dont want to go, cuz the love of the people make that you feel as home.
I never used to watch or pay attention to football until this moment in time when i became a fan of the sport.
I remember IMMEDIATELY after the game thinking it was justice for us, as we felt we were screwed by the ref disallowing Lalas's goal (he was NOT offside). However, we felt horrible for him after we heard about his death. That was so wrong.
saludos hermano uruguayo desde colombia gran gesto,
@Lanzig Thank you for clarifying, appreciate it.

what is the name of the sound that comes in at around 0:39
@SuoBella
an "own goal" is when you put the ball in you own net. The player is credited with the goal and it goes into the stats as an "own goal" So Escobar was credited with the goal, not the last US player to touch it.

Dude, that would be an unbelivevable amount of pressure. Knowing that screwing up in a soccer death = your pre-arranged death?
escobar seemed to always look worried and nervous
What is the music name in 6:53?
0:23 There were 12 “GOAL”s shouted by the commentator. And 12 bullets were shot to him (according to his girlfriend)
RIP Andrés Escobar😭😭
nice upload my friend. what year is this from
This comment is from 7 years ago😲😲😲😲we are in 2021😲😲😲😲

@alejonsu You're so right. Colombia has changed so much since then. Now the Medellin Cartel is leaving after 8 years in the presidency.
Channel 4 should have used Richard Sanders more he did a great job
@grahamgrider I suppose it's a matter of opinion,we judge our heroes by different standards. hermoso ver esos vídeos del verde o de la selección de esa época de los 90

anybody knows what jazz piece is playing at the beginning? starts at like 0:35? PLEASE!
Can you figure what those players felt of receiving death threats before their game against USA. It's scary to think you will die if you don't win.
He should have ask for Asylum in the United States.
Pierre Louis he could've but how would he know that when he landed back in Medellin he would die?
You think he would be safer in US?
It was strongly suggested to him that he at least hang around for a few weeks, to give this all time to cool down.
That would make his family safer!!!
good video man
that was just one part of the big problem colombia had in the 90´s, that was a bad decade, fortunately colombia has changed a lot since the last 10 years
He didn't deserve to die from that. His killer wouldn't have done any better
Eerie the way the announcer uses the word "tragedy" to describe the own goal.
como me dolio ver este video :( ke tristeza colombia a veces me dueles! :(
0:03 scary begining!
They would have scored anyway look at the guy to Escobar's right 0:20. Escobar was only trying to stop them from scoring :/
He said the coach took Columbia to the World Cup finals in 1994, when the final in 1994 was Italia vs Brasil, when R.Baggio missed the penalty!
No that's what the world cup is called, the world cup finals, it's not the actual world cup final game
No that's what the world cup is called, the world cup finals, it's not the actual world cup final game
+Kothiria Kothiria is Colombia not Columbia!
es un dia inolvidable recuerdo su autogol como si fuera ayer descansa en paz andre que injustica

does anyone know why andres escobar WASNT on the team when they beat argentina 5-0 in the final world cup qualifing game???????
thanks!
This happened in the 90s, now Colombia is different. more respect please
If the game would’ve ended 2-2 Andres still be alive
If he didn’t touch it he would be alive or miss the goal or maybe just the goaly blocked it
I wish he didn't kicked it.
where's the documentary from?
happysappy21 I hope you find it some day!

Descance en paz. Un errror fatal que lo costo la vida.

@pedrojosetrujillo92 Well, the own goal may not be the main reason Escobar died, but it was a reason, or am I wrong?
I lost all respect to humanity after seeing this video
I Feel Very Ashamed But Colombia Is Changing Again
:c

Esas caras de preocupacion y de angustia, no eran de derrota sin embargo, algo no andaba nada bien, y peor a todos se les paso por alto.
escobar's own goal led him to his death how sad....

eso solo pasa en medellin
Que tragedia. Ahora Colombia tiene la mejor selección desde la del '94. Soy Uruguayo pero junto con mi país hincho por Colombia.
@wittgenstein83 SOUNDS LIKE HECTOR LAVOE SONG "QUE LIO"

The people who shot him were from the gallon brothers they use to be in Pablo escobars gang but left
@coque198
I'm not writing a term paper here pal.
why would you willingly live in Columbia?
i would also like to know
soy de colombia y creo q a andres lo asesinaron por problemas personales, sin relación al autogol.
Sería por lo que tú dices? Ya lo había escuchado
Realmente sería por eso?
injury i believe!
Stop feeding the troll, people!
if only pablo escobar was alive then. andres would have not gotten killed:(
este video fue subido en el 2010.. creo ke es una falta de respeto el ke subio este video al categorizar la ciudad de Medellin como una de las mas peligrosas de mundo.. por favor aclare ke fue en los anos 80 - 90 ... gracias
I believe you need to have some respect categorizing Medellin as one of the most dangerous cities in the world, you uploaded this video in 2010, this happened on the 90.s.
Why would you willingly live in Colombia?
Because they don’t let dipsh!ts like you in
we will never know...the American player might have flopped and kicked it out, and it would've have been one of the greatest misses. Or the Columbian Keeper might have blocked it. Or it probably would've straight went past all of them...OR OR OR OR OR. We will never know. R.I.P Andres Escobar!

My last name is Escobar
E Higuita se salvo , con todas las cagadas que tambien el hizo .
RIP
@TheSeattlegreen im sorry you were born that way, but hey, there are always treatments
