Awesome video as always EFRT. Happy Birthday Pete and all the many ways to use maple syrup was so interesting I didn’t know you could use maple syrup in so many ways. Thanks for sharing y’all’s adventures with us.
I thought I was doing well with storing supplies in"my she shed!" but I can see I have a lot to learn abott food preservation! You people take it to a whole new level! Thanks for the insight into saving food for "a rainy day!"😊
Love that you are using the syrup in different ways. It's very good on nuts. Roast for 20 mins. Stir a couple times while it bakes. Real maple syrup will be thinner than store bought. Also, you really need to filter it. It will collect all the sugar sand, etc. Amazing how much stuff is in the syrup you don't know about. Digital thermometer also works great. You know when you hit that 219 magic number. Tips for next year.
Here is a nice kitchen hack for you the next time you place seasoned/marinated pork belly in a zip-lock bag. The top half of the bag is turned inside-out covering the bottom half so only the inside surface of the bag is exposed. Place the pork belly in the bag and re invert the top half of the bag and no mess.
You can that’s what I do. I don’t buy flour anymore. I use the wheat berries and you need a fine sifter to get all the berry grains out so it’s not grainy.
I love storing food for the future as well, mostly with a food saver and whatever can fit in our freezer. I just started helping my brother-in-law making maple syrup and it’s a fun relaxing but long process. Love the show please continue
We bought my mom a freeze dryer a few years ago. Everyone uses it. It’s fun to experiment with, perfect for hunting camp meals, and great for the garden veggies and fruit we can’t go through fast enough.
Very glad you shared this with us. Lots of Lessons Learnt from it. An idea is to design a storage shed with access when there still is snow on the ground. Years ago I saw mountain cabins with a main entrance at ground level for use when the snow can be moved.shoveled. A second entrance at a higher level, my guess was for when the snow got too deep to shovel or occupants got trapped inside after a blizzard. Will apply similar thinking for a food storage shed. BTW, recipes that have milk as an ingredient, that is a good place to use up the powder milk. I do this for various recipes when camping. Thanks for sharing.
I love the descriptions of all the things made with the maple syrup!! Sugar? wow never would have guessed yummmmm Happy birthday Pete!! Drone footage is beautiful😊
Very nice video, I envy you, such a wonderful nature, dain the small island, wonderful beautiful. Why don't you dig a bigger hole, concrete it so that it is watertight, store your supplies in it with a cooling system that covers your solar system electrically? That would be a good option. Why are you making yourself dependent? Isn't it better to buy an amphibious vehicle so that you can be mobile at all times? We had these vehicles / boats in Russia, only good experience, the floor should be made of solid stainless steel sheet, so you can move it well on ice, snow and water. Greetings from Frankfurt and stay healthy.
@geroldknoebel3836 This is their first time in trying to access the island while it's still iced in. They were grateful to learn a neighbour had a fan-boat and stated in that video that they are definitely looking into the purchase of a fan-boat of their own after some more research into them. Remember they've only JUST returned home from an epic trip and have many demands to address . I'm sure if you're patient you'll see a fan-boat in their lives in the near future. They also will not have previously budgeted for such an expensive item so that may also dictate the time of acquiring one for themselves. I hope you continue to enjoy their videos as the explore and expand their horizons. 🙂👌👍🇦🇺🤗💞🙏
These Emergency Food packages…just seem like such an expensive and complicated endeavor. I suppose my “emergency food” supply consists of boxes of canned sardines which I eat fairly regularly. I also grow my own sprouts in jars. This episode reminds me that I should firm up plans for the next crisis that the SeeEyeAy has planned for us.
Fresh Cab Mouse Repellent, Balsam Fir Oils Repel Rodents from Nesting in Car/RV/Boat/Garage/Shed/Cabin, 2.5 Oz (4 Pouches) This is what I use in my trailer when were not there. No mice no nothing! Stinks but we air the trailer out and all food is sealed in tubs or buckets no problem. No mice they hate the smell!
Hey guys, here in Australia you can get pet friendly rat sack (poison) that would be safe for wildlife. A few years back there was a large scale mouse plague here and many eagles were lost due to a build up of toxin from eating the dead mice. Since then alternatives have become available- maybe there could be something similar in Canada.
Another great video, HBD to Pete! thanks for sharing your experience with the food storage. These are the kind of thigs you want to learn from someone else, before you ruin a bunch of food!!
Great process of the rice and as long as you also alow the moisture to escasp also befoer you vacum seal it. As for your sealig meathod, using a O2 absorber is great accrodding to what your storing, do not use plastic as you have. Only use mylar as that is the best for ensuring long term storage. If your using plastic vacume sealing, if it is for a year, that will be good, plastic has a permiable aspet that willl let air in. Hope ths helps God Bless
Ahhh Maple Sugar and Maple Butter. Yummo!! My Dad used to make these when I was growing up around Ottawa, my home town. Since moving to Alberta (1979) I sure do miss the maple trees as we don't have any here. Especially in the fall when the leaves turn red. BTW It's time to get another Canadian flag.
So close to ice out! Happy Birthday Pete and all your maple products look amazing. So cool to have this resource in your backyard! Happy your food storage and processing did so well…Hoping you have open water very soon. Been in the 30’s overnight here in MA still but tomorrow looking at 60’s and creeping up to 40’s! As we say this this time of year, hope springs eternal and Go Sox 😊 Barret
Happy Belated Birthday Pete. I use the Canadian Tire food grade Buckets and find they are resealable. I only use the Gama lids for stuff I frequent and the solid lids (no spouts) for less frequented or long term storage. The maple syrup adventures was very interesting - I don't have sugar maples so I order syrup and maple butter from out your way. Good video!
Great video of many many little adventures ! Yes storage in important being prepared , Use & replace the pails work great :) Who doesn't love maple syrup :) That is something I'd love to do but no maple in my area, So I just have to wait for little gifts :)
I remember how my mom would put food in sealed containers. But this time is very different. I would like to have your permission to take notes on the current ways you seal the white buckets.
I'm really amazed about the Maple syrup. Just goes to show God created the earth as a resource for us. Makes me at least want to read the bible to see what he requires of us. Thanks EFRT

Wonder about the fan boat. Such a great thing but does it have a reinforced bottom? I would think the ice would be very hard on it and scrape and abrade the metal. Last thing you need is a sudden leak!
Wheat is a grain not a berry. Berry is a fruit My uncle had been growing wheat on farm since before Oklahoma was a state. I know wheat. My aunt would take cleaned wheat and using a 75 year old hand turned grind into wheat flour. Which is brown White flour has been bleached
Another substitute for flour... when you garden grow lots of zucchini. Cut into long thin strips and dry it. Dehydrator if possible, oven if not. When it's dry you can chop and grind it into powder and go half and half with flour.

This year for the first time ever in my lifetime a rat got in my house and literally chewed through plastic containers I used for storage. What a mess. I had to call someone to set poison baits around my house. I now have three restaurants abutting my property behind me so I think that is the source. I have lived in this house since 2009 but actually grew up in the house next door. Moved away for my youth and career and back in 1996 to care for parents. Never ever before did we have rats on this property. Things are chnnging!

Long term or winter mouse trap solution is a bucket trap with RV antifreeze. Non toxic and easy setup and disposal.
I like using the wheel of death mouse trap here on the west coast of Canada .
We’ll definitely try that. Thanks for the tip!
