23:10-24:25 gives me chills. Nixon was far ahead of his time on addressing privacy concerns with emerging technology. It's clear he envisioned the dangers of losing privacy rights with respect to personal data and use of our personal data by growth of technology systems (i.e. the internet, google, facebook, amazon, etc.)
Fun fact: In an interview with Barbara Walters he was asked if he regretted that he didn't burn the tapes and he stunned her by saying "I probably should have"! Lol
reading the comments on here is always a waste of time. Anyone with any intellectual comprehension at all will know that Nixon was speaking here of great visionary policies for America & the world.
Almost 50 years later, it's still the same - One side of the aisle refuses to applaud achievements just because of a "D" or an "R"... and even THEN healthcare was a problem...
At 42:00, says he has "no intention of walking away from the job the people elected him to do". Ooops, Nixon broke that intention not too long after this.
True, but that isn't the point. The point is that the war on drugs reinforced the taboo against psychoactive substances. Nixon even called all forms of drug abuse "public enemy #1", Also, the war on drugs is shown to have targeted minorities, and has been demonstrated to have had a terrible effect on not only American society, but societies around the world. What do you mean "We'll never know"? We do know. It's been happening since Nixon and it's been awful the entire time. The war on drugs simply does not work.
Because of one subject? Obama has broken so many international laws. Nixon was a Boy Scout compared to Obama. Nixon never taped the phone conversations of other world leaders.
He deliberately interfered with the Paris peace talks to keep the Johnson administration from getting a peace agreement prior to the 1968 election - he could have been convicted of treason for that action.
Yep, and remember donald trump said “make america great again” but what we have seen, he has fucked up america left in a coronacrisis and screwed up the world, hahahaha what a joke.
this should be more appropriately called his “1974 State of the Union”, as it is the entire speech. Nixon did not bring up Watergate until AFTER he had given the SoTU - the Watergate remarks were off-the-cuff.
This guy was a politician in all the wrong terms. Just think what direction history and his political legacy would have taken if he had admitted to doing wrong regarding the Watergate break in, rather than lying and scheming to cover the break in up. Then again, his political history up to that point had been one of so much criminal behavior, it would have been difficult to imagine him as an honorable politician even if the Watergate break in had not destroyed his political career. Saying all this, Richard Nixon did accomplish some significant things as President. Nonetheless, nothing good he did outweighed the fact that his character was severely flawed.
Nixon made the mistake of doing what attorneys tell their clients NOT TO DO! He is talking too much. I would not have even mentioned Watergate. He gave it fuel. He was wrong what he did, but he gave the special prosecutors office additional information, so to speak. He did not help himself.
39:24 Translation: "I believe the time has come to call off the heat now that it's my only remaining hope for stopping them finding the evidence proving my guilt they will inevitably uncover...." The gall of this man was beyond belief....
I like how richard nixon talks about when he was with john f kennedy together in 1947 during the state of the union of that time, then he said, when looking 27 years forward in 2001, i hope you will call back to this moment and will realize that you were there, well i wonder if some pf those politicians just did that once 2001 arrived, Also for years i always tout (Unless i lived under a rock)that richard nixon was a rival from john f kennedy and lost the dialection to become the next president, but i guess once john f kennedy was killed, i suppose richard nickson took his place to be the next president? Right???
I'm watching the former Speaker of The House Carle Albert and contrasting his behavior with that of our present Speaker of The House Nancy Pelosi. Speaker Albert had no fondness for Richard Nixon, but he remained respectful of the Constitutional process and conducted himself with dignity. Not so with our present House Speaker Pelosi as former PoTUS Donald Trump addressed the nation during his SoTU addresses. Let me be clear: I loathe Trump and the RepubliKKKlans on Capitol Hill; but I respect the Constitutional process and the Constitutional exercise of any and every President's State of The Union Address.
Nixon was railroaded by Congress, the courts, and the liberal press. He wanted to change too many things to help the average citizen. He needed to have fought impeachment after destroying those stupid tapes.
He actually starts talking about Watergate at 38:42
thanks for that shoutout, i dont think i could stomach listening to this whole clip
Thanks!
Thanks. I came to the comment section for this info
38:42
Imagine what this man could have accomplished in two terms.
He's a criminal, just like Trump
A new war
Greatest peace President we ever had.
He would have been one of the greatest presidents ever if not for Watergate
@Telive Qwenton LMAO 😂

Holy shit your right. Not joking. Wow
Wow
Yeah. That is pretty true that he was way ahead of his time with this.
@Elsa 0o actually all the more reason why
Wow, you are right
I love how uneasy the crowd looks in this
Not even Ford looks impressed
39:30 calls for end of watergate investigation
He almost sounds likes he about to cry towards the very end.
Fun fact: In an interview with Barbara Walters he was asked if he regretted that he didn't burn the tapes and he stunned her by saying "I probably should have"! Lol
reading the comments on here is always a waste of time. Anyone with any intellectual comprehension at all will know that Nixon was speaking here of great visionary policies for America & the world.
yea, he was pretty good and the people liked him until watergate happened
Indeed. He sounded like a liberal today.
Nixon was the last great Republican president. If I could bring back any president in our history to be our president now, it would be Nixon.
Almost 50 years later, it's still the same - One side of the aisle refuses to applaud achievements just because of a "D" or an "R"... and even THEN healthcare was a problem...
Nixon's health care bill was excellent. It's a tragedy that it didn't pass.
At 42:00, says he has "no intention of walking away from the job the people elected him to do". Ooops, Nixon broke that intention not too long after this.
He didnt walk away he was forced out
@@ajay999999 good.
Watergate was BS,just like the BS on Trump Nixon was not a traitor like many today
This is “rich”. Can we stop with the punch lines of promises and get to the true point!
Trump makes him look presidential.
God Bless President Nixon!
J.H. Kampmann Amen, he got us the hell out of Vietnam.
Lol, his solution to drug addiction was the "War On Drugs". How's that working out today?
We'll never know because Reagan cut funding for rehabilitation.
@@benkleschinsky We do know. It doesn't work. In fact, making the drugs totally illegal makes people use them more, looking at Portugal as an example.
@@temperaterainforest5857 Nixon did not make any drugs illegal while he was President.

What do you mean "We'll never know"? We do know. It's been happening since Nixon and it's been awful the entire time. The war on drugs simply does not work.
In fact, during the Nixon and Carter years most states had decriminalized cannabis. Reagan stepping into office changed that.
.....if a guy got a medal for "beating around the bush".........Nixon would get it
What a disgrace of a statesman.
Why bring up Obama? This guy was a pretty good President during the 70’s.
You're right it is
Some Nixon-apologists in the comments.
Not gonna work. He was a terrible human being.
Because of one subject? Obama has broken so many international laws. Nixon was a Boy Scout compared to Obama. Nixon never taped the phone conversations of other world leaders.
Nobody gave more to serving his country than Nixon.
He made mistakes what politician dosent.
They were wrong to kick him out.
It's one thing to make mistakes. It's another thing to deceive the nation by attempting to cover up those mistakes.
Nixon was never a traitor to his country, like many today
He deliberately interfered with the Paris peace talks to keep the Johnson administration from getting a peace agreement prior to the 1968 election - he could have been convicted of treason for that action.
Nixon’s final State of the Union Address given Jan 27 1974
What a troubled soul
We shoulda wore Garfield masks
FUNNY HOW HE WANTED TO BRING THE INVESTIGATION TO AN END...SOUNDS FAMILIAR HUH??
Dante Ferrise Trump didn’t break in to the DNC committee. Nixon did.
Read the Transcript.
I don’t believe he should of even mentioned Watergate toward the end of the SOTU.
Same lies different politician
Yep, and remember donald trump said “make america great again” but what we have seen, he has fucked up america left in a coronacrisis and screwed up the world, hahahaha what a joke.
He just got caught
YEAH RIGHT NIXON THERE WAS A RECESSION BACK THEN AND YOU DID NOTHING FOR ENERGY!
Sam Ervin is looking @ Nixon like "Keep on dreaming crook. Your days as President will be coming to an end" haha 39:47
blinkzone1 truth
GFY
😂 True.
this should be more appropriately called his “1974 State of the Union”, as it is the entire speech. Nixon did not bring up Watergate until AFTER he had given the SoTU - the Watergate remarks were off-the-cuff.
This was the only SOTU where Ford was vice president. Would he be thinking that a year later he would be giving the speech himself?

Well put!
Nixon made the mistake of doing what attorneys tell their clients
NOT TO DO! He is talking too much.
I would not have even mentioned Watergate. He gave it fuel. He was wrong what he did, but he gave the special prosecutors office additional information, so to speak. He did not help himself.
Unless you like this video, the Republican IRS will audit you. Less than eight months later, Tricky Dicky resigned in disgrace on Aug. 9, 1974.
Was he a crook ? Because this is all lies
1:41....with Steve Buscemi
as The Speaker of the House.
Pretty sure that is Joe Biden on the lower left at 6:23 in front of George McGovern. Biden would have only been 31 at the time.
oh dang
That is him. I wonder where his hands are?
Yes it’s him which tells you all you need to know. His ass needs to stop being a politicians
Was Nixon shunned by Washington for a few years after his resignation? I imagine until at least 10 years later he wasn't a very popular ex president
Best president Trump or Nixon
Shifty eyes .......
One of the greatest presidents ever

Watch out 'Tricky'...There are Bush's lurking in the Bush's...
When he brings up 2001? That’s when Bush Jr will be a President. Not anyone in the chamber.
The war in Vietnam was still continue with u.s. troops still fightingn
Yeah I thought they didnt leave till 75

You sound like a bitter democrat….. a little stoned too.~~
I wonder how drunk he was when he gave this speech?
less drunk than you are
Even though he had domestic problems he was still one of the greats
He was a very very smart as well as wise man I adored him
