It is awesome seeing the bipartisan love and respect leaders in Congress had for Gerald Ford. Immediately after President Nixon said “he has served in the Congress for 25 years” everyone erupted because they knew it was Ford. Really wish we had a Gerald Ford today!! #POTUS38

Gerald Ford was probably the right person for the time to become VP then, President. Maybe, at the time when he gave Nixon a full pardon, it seemed to make some angry, but Ford did mention of not wanting to essentially, drag the American people through another drawn out trial, just wanted to move on, Nixon, at least finally "accepted" his mustskes, unlike, #45, Orangey.

This was when America was united. Unlike today people like Nancy Pelosi have separated the country.

One of the great con artists of history. Timing of this speech in reference to prosperity is interesting, as 1972 was the peak year for the middle class in the US. From 1973 on it has been stagnation and decline. And Nixon's gross mismanagement -- wage and price controls, the HMO rot in our health system, blaming oil-price-caused inflation on our own workers and so on -- was one of the significant ingredients of this turning point. And yet you have vestiges of the old ways still -- Nixon acknowledging the need to have a VP with credibility with both parties. A pity that the guy he chose, with Dick Cheney and Donald Rumsfeld and George Bush senior's close cooperation, created the excessively powerful modern imperial presidency in just two and half years in office.....and almost every president since has taken liberties with those excessive powers in some way.

The 1970’s were the end of the World War 2 economic blip. After the war, the US was the only major industrial power not destroyed. The US enjoyed a prosperous but temporary economic boom. The boom was going to end whoever was president.

And the Yom Kippur War was getting started, which resulted in the Arab oil embargo, which spawned the "energy crisis"; the ONE thing I remember about that, (I was only 11 years old at the time) was when Daylight Saving Time started on January 6th the following year, and on February 23rd in 1975.
