A lot of people here are really clueless about what tracing actually is in the professional art world. It is extremely common to start off a portrait for a client by tracing the face and breaking down the structure. I was taught that this is acceptable by my college art professors. This artist is clearly very skilled. Saving time by doing some initial tracing of a photo and working from there is smart, not cheating. You can tell the difference between the tracing of an artist that is inexperienced versus the tracing of an artist that understands the facial structure.
If you truly understand facial structure you dont need to trace. Youre not gonna sit here and tell me professionals trace whole faces, which if they are portrait artists is their whole job in the first place, and call that real art. Sure if this was photobashed, but it aint. Why do you think people study faces from reference instead of tracing them? If you trace like this how are you ever going to get your skills up to par. You miss proportions you miss shapes etc. Because by you tracing it you skip that step of the observation.
If i commissioned a portrait and found out they only did the colouring because they traced the base, i would ask my money back
@@drawspaceX i respect your opinion
If there's a technique that can make your work fast why not use it maybe for you you always put your heart, emotions etc to your art but im just a hobbyist art is not really my passion so it always depends how people using the Tracing technique. Also professionals using that technique like disney.
Lan Gnezda In this particular vector/vexel portrait art style, it is completely standard to start by drawing over a picture. As the creator of this video also mentioned, tracing was and is heavily utilized by Disney, look up the technique of Rotoscoping. As a client, you do not pay for how the artist does their work, you pay for the finished art piece. It would be completely inappropriate for you to want your money back because you retroactively decided you didn’t like that way in which the piece was made. I do also believe that stepping away from tracing is important to improve your skills, but that doesn’t make this entire genre of artwork worthless.
Lan Gnezda sheesh another one of “those” people
I'm a professional artist and we were trained not to trace. We took several courses about proportions, anatomy, facial expressions, basic shapes, etc. There is a reason why tracing feels like cheating to artists who trained for years just to draw without a guide or draw from memory. That's what makes the skill.
I am not judging your art, I think this actually looks pretty good, but if you want to skill-up, then do away with the tracing. Maybe you can start by placing a reference photo beside your canvas, but not tracing it.
Bro, this comment section wtf.
1. If this person is literally doing this for fun, don’t go absolutely Karen over “oh no it’s not real art”
2. If they were to actually do this professionally, then OFC learn it in a way that isn’t just tracing.
3. Guys it’s vector art, you most literally trace over photos
4. Aight
most of commenters on this vid are literally Karens trying to prove that they are the most educated in this topic, like they say "someone who always say they always get laid, never got laid at all", kinda sad tbh.
Good example and I agree
AJ BTLLR Yeah, and it’s not like they’re claiming they “drew it”. It’s for fun and enjoyment. I did it once and I don’t post them anywhere on the internet. It’s just for me to look at :)
how did i know that there would be ppl pulling the "its not real" art thing just because the used a picture for line art. When you start expecting stuff like this then you know there's a real problem
Guys, in doing vexel art, it is only natural to trace the outline from the original image. That is why it is called VEXEL and not digital PAINTING. In vexel, you trace the outlines and then color it the way you want, BUT, the way you color it must be like a pop/comic style. Try searching more about Vexel and Vector art and you would know their differences from other forms of art in digital and even in traditional.
Yeah, same thing about vector.
Lemme just copy paste dis to some "pros" who think this is cheating, thanks.
Sometimes we wanna work on our colouring skill without thinking much of the drawing, tracing is one way to do it, some people also use downloadable lineart. But really, there is no correct way to do art, lemme remind you~
true! art like semi-realism are usually focused on colouring than lineart itself. Tracing arent always bad but it's better to get reference than to trace
i do trace too for quick art. Basically digital art helps us for easy work
No correct way to do art? what??
@@nicanii2151 Everyone do art differently, there are people who do digital art, traditional art, use sketches, with pencil, brush etc. There is really no one correct way of doing art, so there's no wrong one either, that's what i meant.
Exactly
i dont know if she can actually create something from nothing tho... bcs i dont see nothing wrong in practicing ur color, but u also need to practice the most important thing which is to actually make ur own drawing, starting with sketch to finelining and her adding the shadows and lights from her imagination and where she thinks they'd be ( ofcourse she has to decide where she wants the light to come from first) bcs her colouring is a very nice and unque style, but without ur own drawing its like a human body without its soul or memories for example

To anyone saying that tracing doesnt help you improve too much. I think it depends how long you've been doing it. Cause as you trace it you also learn the features. And in the long run somehow you gain muscle memory from doing it.
But i guess if you use heavy stabilizer on tracing, muscle memory might not be too much help 🤷 when you switch to traditional art.
I've been drawing for over 10 years now, been tracing at the beginning and trust me it taught me jack shit.
@@honestphrog I was about to say the same thing
So time = art 😹
[TLDR: It depends on how you trace imo]
I really think it depends on how you trace, I had never traced in my life after drawing traditionally for more then 10 years probably, till I got a tablet last year maybe(?) and from there I think my art skill (if you can call it that hahah) really got boosted because I started not just drawing but understanding what I was drawing and seeing figures geometrically, making it easier to distinguish bodies and then add my own art style. That means that I wasn’t tracing the outline but actually drawing figures on top of the picture to help me understand and distinguish what is being seen and I think that’s one of the ways you can really learn from tracing, and I still do it to this day before I start really making a drawing my own and it’s been okay so far but each and every person can choose what works for them and what they personally think is right. And I think it’s also important to note that my traditional drawings have also improved *a lot* and I can somewhat easily draw portraits traditionally now that I now how to actually break apart the face and features to have symmetry and make sure it looks like the actual picture (something that I used to really struggle with and sometimes still do). Buttt don’t take my word for it, everyone should be open to try new things at some point in their life and especially to improve their hobby or future career
Im ok with u when it comes to tracing face proportion for clients
But tbh i don't this applies to shadow tracing :/ besides hue changes he traced the whole image this is purely uncreative in my opinion
though it is traced especially the lineart but i really enjoyed the way they colored it so nicely ^^
Hei culture person, i see you use leviathan as your profile 😌😇
hasni rosselini lmao yes levi is so cute ):
That's why it's called vexel art. You literally trace the outline from the original image and then do your own coloring. (The coloring style should be like a pop/comic art style).
Even if it's traced, it took skills and talent to be able to identify that what you're doing is proportional and right. Because if my brother traced that, she'll be lookin like shrek. He cant even draw a straight line with a ruler. 😅
@@maddymoore8930 man you'd be surprised. Sure anyone can trace but it takes a bit of understanding of how digital art works and proportions to make the tracing look that clean. Gotta know how to move the pen with the face and proportions. You could start off like me with real thin lines and the trace still looks like chicken scratch trash after you're done then build up a better understanding so you can learn how to do it like the artist in this video.
Tracing isn't necessarily a bad thing. Many artist use tracing to get use to a shape or form (usually of anatomical nature) or to help with coloring and shading. It can be great practice. And I would like to point out that work like this still takes a great deal of effort. Tracing is only bad if you take unoriginal artwork and try to pass it off as your own.
But you actually don’t learn, I think is bad, it is only good to color
@@majo2211 tracing isn't bad if you already know how to draw portraits freehand, if you are a beginner, tracing is bad
Majo you DO learn. But it depends on the person. If she/he rlly loves to do this kind of style then she/he will learn. It’s not bad too
@@majo2211 wdym you dont learn lmaoo, learning with tracing is probably one of the fastest lol
@@majo2211 I disagree. If you do it enough then you'll learn by muscle memory. Of course depending on who you are or your skill level you might need or want other courses or tutorials to really flesh those shapes or objects out and that's fine. Everyone learns differently.
Despite all these tracing comments 😑; Can we appreciate the colors, shadows, highlights, and shading done? I for one can not do any of those and still have lots to learn. Props to this person!!
This is not even what what you can call "tracing". This is so dope, enjoyed every seconds of it.
I'm a little dizzy because the screen is spinning a lot, but the drawing was perfect, congratulations. :0

these people commenting about tracing being bad obviously don’t know art and how many artists trace things. even the greatest of artists traced at some point in time and its not even about the PROCESS its about the final product so calm your mashooganas thanks. the piece is beautiful by the way.

This is REALLY cool though. As someone who draws digitally since a lot of time, I can tell you're very skilled with painting! Honestly I didn't knew this was an existing method of making art but damn, looks pretty dope, guess I'm learning something new today.
Also sorry by this ugly ass comment section lmao.
ikr wth is this comment section lmao
I tried doing Vexel art. I'm an experienced editor and I work on art as well, but only just a little on that. I do a lot of coloring and tracing on certain edits, I sometimes draw (though I'm not an artist at all). But when I tried Vexel art, I realized this was also some kind of professional art field. It was difficult as fuck, you really need to understand Vexel art as a whole first before properly trying it somehow. That is if you don't know Vexel at all or you have little to no experience in art. This is not just tracing, you need to learn and get used to a lot of things. My comment can be subjective, this is just my point of view.
Is this kind of art used in the animation industry I feel I see something like this in a few frames of an aniem
@@kevinn_9568 that's the artstyle, and yes its a pretty common artstyle ^^

Esse sua técnica de pintura é simplesmente genial. Parabéns.
Muito boa
I'm a multimedia arts graduate and I use traced and not traced in doing my arts and I do traditional drawing too, there's is no right or wrong in making art as long as you enjoy what you do it's all good.
Your outlining skills produced a very nice outcome!
its a good idea to watch dis i need to learn like this to help my channel and creat more arts.
This is very well done! When it comes to portraits, especially paid, “tracing” is recommended. When you have a picky client, the reality is, “artistic freedom” is not really option. Which sucks and I hate those clients, but it’s a reality. It’s the difference to be getting paid the $200-$300 you’re due or to have a potential lawsuit from Karen because she felt you drew her too fat and doesn’t want to pay.
Yo this is soo dope what the heck, just earned a new subscriber keep up the amazing work man!
Love your art style 👌🔥
This is a great method to focus on illustrating while still teaching your mind perspective and of course line work. 😊

ang hirap nung part na iisipin mo san banda magbubura hahahaha para maayos yung shadows kaiyaq
And now i want to learn this... Sigh....
Nice video! Hehe
imo, tracing is acceptable if you only use it as your guidelines. tracing for body proportion, breaking it down into shapes and more accurate angles and poses. as long as you're learning and will apply what you've learned in your future artworks that you no longer have to trace your reference to use guidelines. but direct tracing is a lil bit... you know what i mean... kinda off to those who learned anatomy and body proportions. but all in all, i like the way you color, you actually did a great job and i salute you that. again, this is my opinion guys.
That blending is awesome
A perfect and a amazing art
This is so nice, I will try to do this too.. 😍
I think its more of an edit rather than art but thats just my opinion if you desegree than its fine since not all peoples have to have the same opinion but i do love the end result! Keep up the good work!
this is beautiful.. though you make it with Android.. amazing, respect 👍
That was sooooooo smooooooth!
all the people commenting about tracing, this artist is clearly skilled enough to be able to draw this without tracing but has traced the outline to save time. stop preaching, most of you guys are not even close to the artist skill level and are just using bs logic about what's "right". you'd be surprised just how many pro artists use this method to save time in their work.
AMAZING , so finely and precisely beautiful
I do this trick everyday to improve my drawing🔥
Tracing is not an efficient way to improve your drawing.
Recommend you to references, and not trace from other people pics,i sometimes do it for fun,but i don't recommend it,you wont improve,I tell you from experience
Breakdown the structure bro, Its more efficient, You'll know where the facial features are placed, Hair, and Body structure, You could trace if you want to but it won't be as effective
Check ethan becker and you'll see improvements within a month
^ this. you shouldn't trace only but also try to break down the structure. it will be helpful in the future and broaden your drawing skill. tracing is okay, all of us have done it. but if you want to be good at drawing, you still need to work it out.
This deserves a ton of likes
I hope I can be this good at this. Iloveyourwork, really ❤

Sketching on paper is easy but I tried it on the autodesk and its really hard. Plus I'm just using my fingers, I can't afford the stylus pen. Tracing is not that bad for me as long as you're learning from it. Let's just focus on the beautiful art he/she made.
YOU MAKE IT LOOK SO EASY!
I need a tutorial to this masterpiece🤩
It's tracing. It takes minimal skill. Just trace an image, get super popular apparently
Some people can't even do anything close to this even if they trace a picture, and the fact that the shading is almost perfect makes me think that this person knows how to draw even without tracing, but it makes it easier and faster to trace specially if this is your job, clients want to look just like the picture they gave you, they don't want your "touch" in there, i think it's still respectable
@@pl7396 but how she do the coloring tho?the shading?not everything about the work is just tracing smh

Many people dont like vector cause they thought it was cheating because of the tracing but this kind of style really helps youbif you're just starting it can help you understand the humn structure
I doubt very much that you can learn anatomy without Base
There's nothing wrong in tracing, just imo it'll even better if u can alter a bit of what u r tracing. Like change her hairstyle, cloth, etc

Nice I love it :)
People make and view TRACING as a negative word in the art community. When even proffesionals trace when it comes to work. Tracing is a good practice too, it saves you a lot of time and effort. You can always practice freehand but when there's a long line up of clients and commissions, free hand isn't always an option. Art doesn't have rules, as long as you don't steal other's works, it's fine the way you do it. Also, it's vexel art. Tracing the lineart is a norm here.
This is super great , damn!
