    A lot of people here are really clueless about what tracing actually is in the professional art world. It is extremely common to start off a portrait for a client by tracing the face and breaking down the structure. I was taught that this is acceptable by my college art professors. This artist is clearly very skilled. Saving time by doing some initial tracing of a photo and working from there is smart, not cheating. You can tell the difference between the tracing of an artist that is inexperienced versus the tracing of an artist that understands the facial structure.

    • @drawspaceX
      @drawspaceX 4 года назад +103

      If you truly understand facial structure you dont need to trace. Youre not gonna sit here and tell me professionals trace whole faces, which if they are portrait artists is their whole job in the first place, and call that real art. Sure if this was photobashed, but it aint. Why do you think people study faces from reference instead of tracing them? If you trace like this how are you ever going to get your skills up to par. You miss proportions you miss shapes etc. Because by you tracing it you skip that step of the observation.
      If i commissioned a portrait and found out they only did the colouring because they traced the base, i would ask my money back

      @@drawspaceX i respect your opinion
      If there's a technique that can make your work fast why not use it maybe for you you always put your heart, emotions etc to your art but im just a hobbyist art is not really my passion so it always depends how people using the Tracing technique. Also professionals using that technique like disney.

    • @Tinkalila
      @Tinkalila 4 года назад +148

      Lan Gnezda In this particular vector/vexel portrait art style, it is completely standard to start by drawing over a picture. As the creator of this video also mentioned, tracing was and is heavily utilized by Disney, look up the technique of Rotoscoping. As a client, you do not pay for how the artist does their work, you pay for the finished art piece. It would be completely inappropriate for you to want your money back because you retroactively decided you didn’t like that way in which the piece was made. I do also believe that stepping away from tracing is important to improve your skills, but that doesn’t make this entire genre of artwork worthless.

      I'm a professional artist and we were trained not to trace. We took several courses about proportions, anatomy, facial expressions, basic shapes, etc. There is a reason why tracing feels like cheating to artists who trained for years just to draw without a guide or draw from memory. That's what makes the skill.
      I am not judging your art, I think this actually looks pretty good, but if you want to skill-up, then do away with the tracing. Maybe you can start by placing a reference photo beside your canvas, but not tracing it.

    Guys, in doing vexel art, it is only natural to trace the outline from the original image. That is why it is called VEXEL and not digital PAINTING. In vexel, you trace the outlines and then color it the way you want, BUT, the way you color it must be like a pop/comic style. Try searching more about Vexel and Vector art and you would know their differences from other forms of art in digital and even in traditional.

    To anyone saying that tracing doesnt help you improve too much. I think it depends how long you've been doing it. Cause as you trace it you also learn the features. And in the long run somehow you gain muscle memory from doing it.
    But i guess if you use heavy stabilizer on tracing, muscle memory might not be too much help 🤷 when you switch to traditional art.

      [TLDR: It depends on how you trace imo]
      I really think it depends on how you trace, I had never traced in my life after drawing traditionally for more then 10 years probably, till I got a tablet last year maybe(?) and from there I think my art skill (if you can call it that hahah) really got boosted because I started not just drawing but understanding what I was drawing and seeing figures geometrically, making it easier to distinguish bodies and then add my own art style. That means that I wasn’t tracing the outline but actually drawing figures on top of the picture to help me understand and distinguish what is being seen and I think that’s one of the ways you can really learn from tracing, and I still do it to this day before I start really making a drawing my own and it’s been okay so far but each and every person can choose what works for them and what they personally think is right. And I think it’s also important to note that my traditional drawings have also improved *a lot* and I can somewhat easily draw portraits traditionally now that I now how to actually break apart the face and features to have symmetry and make sure it looks like the actual picture (something that I used to really struggle with and sometimes still do). Buttt don’t take my word for it, everyone should be open to try new things at some point in their life and especially to improve their hobby or future career

      @@maddymoore8930 man you'd be surprised. Sure anyone can trace but it takes a bit of understanding of how digital art works and proportions to make the tracing look that clean. Gotta know how to move the pen with the face and proportions. Tracing isn't necessarily a bad thing. Many artist use tracing to get use to a shape or form (usually of anatomical nature) or to help with coloring and shading. It can be great practice. I tried doing Vexel art. I'm an experienced editor and I work on art as well, but only just a little on that. I do a lot of coloring and tracing on certain edits, I sometimes draw (though I'm not an artist at all). But when I tried Vexel art, I realized this was also some kind of professional art field. It was difficult as fuck, you really need to understand Vexel art as a whole first before properly trying it somehow. That is if you don't know Vexel at all or you have little to no experience in art. This is not just tracing, you need to learn and get used to a lot of things. My comment can be subjective, this is just my point of view.

Which sucks and I hate those clients, but it’s a reality. It’s the difference to be getting paid the $200-$300 you’re due or to have a potential lawsuit from Karen because she felt you drew her too fat and doesn’t want to pay.

    Sketching on paper is easy but I tried it on the autodesk and its really hard. Plus I'm just using my fingers, I can't afford the stylus pen. Tracing is not that bad for me as long as you're learning from it. Let's just focus on the beautiful art he/she made.

      Some people can't even do anything close to this even if they trace a picture, and the fact that the shading is almost perfect makes me think that this person knows how to draw even without tracing, but it makes it easier and faster to trace specially if this is your job, clients want to look just like the picture they gave you, they don't want your "touch" in there, i think it's still respectable

    Even thou he trace the line art you can tell that he litterally can do it without tracing he's coloring skill and understanding the human face is 🔥 he literally just want to save time.
    Many people dont like vector cause they thought it was cheating because of the tracing but this kind of style really helps youbif you're just starting it can help you understand the humn structure

    People make and view TRACING as a negative word in the art community. When even proffesionals trace when it comes to work. Tracing is a good practice too, it saves you a lot of time and effort. You can always practice freehand but when there's a long line up of clients and commissions, free hand isn't always an option. Art doesn't have rules, as long as you don't steal other's works, it's fine the way you do it. Also, it's vexel art. Tracing the lineart is a norm here.
