      @@joeymirabile6803 oh definitely! The only problem is that I don’t want to go to Italy for less than a month 🤣 so we’re hoping we can plan a pretty epic trip one day and experience so much more than the touristy spots. Do you have particular parts of Italy you love?

      @@James-np8pu ah definitely! Bryan’s sister lives in England so a trip to visit her and travel around as much as we can is definitely in the cards! There is sooooo much we want to see. I’ve never been a huge fan of mushy peas but I’m sure I’ll find incredible things to eat 🤣 (I actually haven’t had them since being plant based so I probably wouldn’t scrunch my nose up as much anymore)!

    This was culturally fascinating--I do not know much about Bali's cuisine--but also very well edited. The recipes look both familiar to those of acquainted with Viet, Thai, or even other Indonesian foods, but also exotic because the differences, even where similar ingredients are used, are readily apparent. Thanks for posting 🙂

      We’re so glad you enjoyed this video! (And Bryan very much appreciates your compliment on the editing 😜!) we had such a great time and learned so much on this trip. The time we spent learning from locals was really special. Food is so central to culture, traditions, and daily life - it’s such a great way to connect to people (and then getting to eat all the delicious food makes it even better 😋)!

      Oh hello fellow Ontarian! We’re in BC now but we’re still getting used to the more laid back west coast vibes 😂 I’m so glad you enjoyed the video and let me know if you ever experiment with these recipes. (The banana leaves definitely help to make everything look really impressive 😜). We would definitely love Thailand. There was a Thai restaurant in Toronto we loved and we always talked to the owners about a sanctuary they ran in Chiang Mai. It’s been on our list ever since! Have you been?

      @@TastyThriftyTimely Yes! We spent three glorious weeks in Thailand just before Covid, traveling to many off the beaten path places, sampling delicious foods at every opportunity. The people are wonderful... the natural beauty spectacular. There's lots to explore - like the 13th century ruins - for example. And did I mention the food? Always freshly prepared and really tasty! My only regret is not taking a cooking lesson in one of the many restaurants that offer this option. BTW... there were plenty of vegan options everywhere.

    Absolutely love south East Asian cuisine! Never been to Bali (Indonesia) but done Malaysia, Vietnam & Thailand. The premise of the herbs and spices are very similar but very different ways and methods, so it was fascinating to see this insight. Just love travel and good blog combined. I actually slice up fresh turmeric and ferment/ pickle for later use. Never heard of candle nuts! Love the tip with the kifir lime leaf. Completely watched and enjoyed, as always. Just love the tasting sessions too, you totally sell it. The corn fritters look epic! You’ve covered loads of recipes here! Loved the outro, this is your most complete video yet!!! Looked like you had an amazing honeymoon. OMG how can you put your shirt on backwards, only I can do that! Keep up the great work & inspiration, Kathryn 🤟🏼😜

      Hahaha gosh happens to the best of us I guess 🤦🏻‍♀️too funny. I’m glad you liked the tasting session. I think Bryan joining me for the taste test at the end our videos will be the new normal. His observations have been adding a touch of comedy to the outros lol 😂 I’m so glad you enjoyed this video and it brought back memories from your own travels. I’ve never tried pickling turmeric! Once we release our ebook soon I’ll have some time to tackle my next project… getting fermented foods into our daily rotation!

      @@TastyThriftyTimely Note that the water i mentioned is already mixed with the spices (garlic,salt and corriander), the tempeh are soak in it to absorb the spices . This is the most commonly method used by Indonesian when frying the tempeh.

      Oh interesting. Our hosts just fried it in oil first and then fried the spices in a pan and added the fried tempeh to coat it. Good to know you can soak it too.

    I'm so glad you and Bryan finally got to go to Bali! :-D Everything you prepared looks absolutely delicious -- I particularly want to see if I can find that ginger-y root that puts one in mind of Vick's at any Asian groceries near me. That really would be amazing in stuff.
    I didn't realise you had to delay your honeymoon 3 years because of COVID, though! :-( I didn't realise you had to reschedule it that far out. I really hope you had an amazing time, and that everything worked out for the best.
    Incidentally... when you brought up that it was originally in 2020, you reminded me of something you did back then, for charity -- I bring that up because your opposite number from that praised your work with them, as an artist, two nights ago: ruclips.net/video/tvrQ5cZLUcY/видео.htmlsi=Apk8wX0xARk4aN1O&t=2722 If you didn't know about it already, I just wanted to let you know, because they gave quite the shout-out. :-)
    Are you planning to travel back to Bali when you can, or are you hoping to do a few more trips to the Azores? Wish I could recommend places you and Bryan haven't been to, yet, but you've traveled to some amazing places already!

    • @TastyThriftyTimely
      @TastyThriftyTimely  7 месяцев назад +3

      Oh thank you for sending along that interview 🥰 she’s the greatest and that show was such a wonderful one to work on ❤️
      I hope you are able to find galangal (the menthol like one!) it’s a key ingredient in tom yum soup if you’ve ever had that so there are definitely many delicious things you could make from it!
      And yes it took us awhile to reschedule our trip! Work started back up for us and then we moved across Canada from Toronto to Vancouver Island so by the time we got our feet under us enough to book it again it had been over 3 years! It was definitely worth the wait though and made all the sweeter in a way.
      We have been really fortunate to be able to travel to great places. We’d love to go back to the azores 🥰 now that we live on the west coast traveling to Asia is a little closer too. No plans at the moment but we have an extensive travel wish list 🤣!

    • @blofeld39
      @blofeld39 7 месяцев назад +2

      @@TastyThriftyTimely I hope I am able to find galangal, too -- would you recommend specific dishes/recipes to put it in, aside from authentic Balinese cuisine? It seems like it would go really well with certain things, but not others, but I have the sort of palate that sort of makes me go in for distinctive flavour combinations. :-)
      Had you planned to stay with those specific people in Bali way back when, or did you have to find a new host to stay with? Regardless, I'm sure it took a while to get sorted to satisfaction, but I'm so glad it worked out so wonderfully!
      I remember you said you moved because Bryan got a position at... I think it was an aquarium? A specific oceanic thing? I'm sure I'm not doing the actual position justice, but I was wondering if you wind up having regular interactions with wonderful oceanic wildlife if he does. :-) I know there's so much biodiversity in the Bay.
      As for places closer to you now that you're on Vancouver Island, I was about to say that I wasn't sure if you'd been down the West Coast before... but then I remembered you probably had been, at least a few times, for, you know, that show. :-D So, I'm sure you'd know what to look for, down there, but I'm also sure it might be a lovely adventure for TastyThriftyTimely to go on! Left coast is large and long enough that you could probably make an entire series of videos going state-by-state and vegan dish by vegan dish, if you wanted to. :-)

    • @TastyThriftyTimely
      @TastyThriftyTimely  7 месяцев назад +2

      @@blofeld39 yes galangal is really popular in Thai cuisine. Tom Yum soup is a great one you can make and Thai curry pastes like green curry and massaman curry all use galangal. There’s another Vancouver RUclipsr @PailinsKitchen that has amazing authentic Thai recipes (not plant based) but you can get some ideas from her channel for sure!
      And yes we had planned to stay with suara glamping when we first booked our trip for 2020. We were so glad we were able to rebook with them. We were originally going for a month but had to scale back to two weeks when we rebooked (now that Bryan isn’t self-employed too lol) so we had some other stays booked originally that we couldn’t rebook.
      You’re close on Bryan’s job 🤣 he works for an ocean conservation company called @sealegacy. He’s their video editor and a creative producer so he’s not usually in the field filming the underwater creatures and more so in a room alone, editing 🤣 he loves it though and he at least gets to look at beautiful ocean life every day (he gets to see the not so beautiful parts of what we’re doing to the ocean too so it’s a good reminder to keep making our food from plants!)
      We would love a US trip for sure. We’ve been to California but it’s so easy for us to ferry to Washington so we’ll have to do that at some point for sure! Thanks for the reminder ❤️
      Keep me posted if you find galangal and what you make!

      @@TastyThriftyTimely I shall keep you posted; thank you SO much for all the info! :-) I wasn't expecting so much, but you answered every question I wound up thinking of, so... thank you, so much. Bryan being a videographer and editor makes so much sense, considering how great your channel's videos all are -- I'm sad you had to scale back your dates in Bali, but I'm so glad you still had an amazing time there! And if you do Washington State, if that's easiest, I'm sure there's such a variety there that it'd be worthwhile to videograph there, too. :-) If I'm able to find galangal, I'll let you know what I can make with it. Thank you so much!

      Thank you Jackie! We had an amazing time 🥰 and hmmm I don’t have an air fryer so I’m not sure how something as wet and floury as the batter for these would crisp up? I haven’t tried baking them and I wondered if I would actually try making them with cornmeal instead of flour for a baked version. If I give it a try I’ll let you know what I find. I might do a bit more internet sleuthing to see if others have done something similar without oil.
