How to release or transfer a YouTube Handle to another channel

In this video I'm gonna show you how I fixed the issue of transfering a RUclips handle from one of my channels to another one. Feel free to comment, rate and subscribe. Thank you very much! :)

worked for me april 2024 you have to make sure to change the name twice on the account you want to release change publish one time then change publish another time with another name and then the original handle you want will be released thank you NICO

Works exactly like you said. For those having trouble removing the handle on the donor/source account, you can only make two changes in 14 days. If you try to change it more times, it will tell you that you have to wait. It also tells you when you can try again.

I had a main account and a secondary account and when youtube handles were released I quickly took 2 handles, my bad they were swapped, the good handle was in the secondary account. Thanks to your video I just changed the handle on my main account to the one I actually wanted.
For deleted accounts, I deleted my secondary account a few months ago and created it again minutes after. With the surprise of not releasing the handle as you mention. I think creating it again and then trying your solution of going through 2 different handles will work for deleted accounts

this did not work for me either :(. I changed the name of my channel 3 times like suggested and the other channel it is still saying it is not available. The old channel is saying that the 'existing channel (the one I am trying to release) still works. I wonder if it is because I am trying to change from a personal account to a brand account? I might have to just delete the old channel and wait the 14/30 days?

this did not work on march 17,2023. Chatted with support at length, and you have to wait 14 days for a handle to be released. You made it look easy, but all I did was lock the account i wanted to remove the handle from.i.e 2 changes=you cant change again for 14 days. worse yet, all 3 handles point the same place.
I checked again with another random account and I have to say, that it still works for me as in the video. I'm sorry to hear, that it did not work for you. Or do you have any news on that by now?
Did you had a brand account associated to your old channel? I had one with my old channel and it didn't work. Tried with another account I wanted to release the handle from, and it worked perfectly.
did you see @scientologist comment above? they said they couldnt get it to work on mobile. did you try changing it on desktop? i'm hoping that helps you.
I say this works. You just have to change the handler twice for the channel whose handler you want to transfer. Then it will be available for the other one.
I think I understand the issue that this user might be describing. If you have TWO handles and you want to swamp them BOTH with eachother, it actually requires you to swap the first account 3 times. For Example: Channel A changes to Channel A2. Then Channel B changes to Channel B2. Then Channel A2 changes to Channel B. Then Channel B2 changes to Channel B3. Now Channel A has taken over the handle for Channel B successfully, but in order for Channel B3 to take over Channel A, it would require a THIRD handle change for that channel. I know this sounds crazy confusing, but this is the reality of trying to swap to account fully. You can successfully move one name over to another, but you must wait 14 days for the second channel name to be switched to the first. Hope this helps SOMEBODY out there lol.

I was very excited to get this to work is there a certain amount of time you have to wait after you technically release the user name because sadly I still can't change to my desired user name after doing what youve told me , maybe after 14 days or 30 days it will then work?

TLDR: A channel has one handle, if the owner changes the handle the old handle moves to a secondary handle that fwds to the the first handle.
The handle is not available and still forwards at this point.
If you change it to a third handle then the first handle is unlocked and anyone can pick it up. At this point the second handle will fwd to the third.

Oh thank God! I was worried because the most recent comment said it didn't work, so it was a gamble. I went for it and on 1/12/2024 - it worked! Did it exactly as was done on the video basically.

Can I convert/switch my personal youtube account into a brand youtube account and keep the same name and handle? Keeping the same name and handle is key here because I made mistake. With my business google details I intially opened a normal youtube account instead of brand one and now I need the same name and handle on the brand one. Is that possible? How to do it? Please help

I want to release a Handle that was created from an old custom URL. I tried this method, and still appears me that option. So, I have now 3 options I can choose, it didn't release it 😓
Hey! You're trying to release a "custom URL" and not a handle? Because these custom URLs can't be released or transferred. They will stick to the channel. Only the handles can be transferred 😕

Still works. I did wait for 14 days after freeing the handle I wanted to transfer, and it took a few minutes to update
Currently, the handle remains with you after changing it for an indefinite period until you change it again, after which you can reserve the old handle again.

Very helpful, so what I understand from this, is that you can hold TWO handles at the same time, so for example
When you have @handle1, then you change it to @handle2,
*_these 2 handles are are activated and unusable for anybody else. I DON'T know for how long it will stay unavailable, though._*
I previously had four handles at the same time for the same channel.
@@ఠ̥ఠtechnically you can have infinite handles by adding diacritics, or do you mean 4 completely different letter/character handles?

Hi, I had a handle, changed it to second and then third.
Realized I actually wanted the second.
I still have the second in my secondary spot so for 14 days it can be used in a URL. However I can’t revert back to the second handle! How do I get around this!

This isn't working for me, all I managed to do was release my desirable handle by changing it twice and the new channel cannot grab it days later still and I put both channels under the same login account ownership. Am I missing something? or did I follow some misleading advice that caused me to lose my handle like an idiot?

Oh my goodness, this video saved me so much stress and time! Thank you! Do you know if the process is similar on Instagram? I've heard about a 14-day delay with releasing a username, but now I'm wondering if it's just a queuing process like you described for RUclips??
I don't know how exactly how it works on instagram, but I think on Instagram you have to wait for a defined time until a freed handle is actually free again.

This works, unfortunately for whatever reason you can only change your handle once within a 14-day period on mobile. Not sure why this is the case. It wouldn't even let me change it back to the original handle.

I tried the method you told me with a friends account. We want to transfer/release a username. We both registered around 2007 to RUclips.
But, even after changing the username twice (in RUclips Studio) of the wished account, the name was not released back into the available name pool.
can you tell me, if we do something wrong?
Is it possible, because of the age of the account, it is too old for that method?

June'24 changed name once a long time ago and ran into this issue. After this video I changed my name 2 more times, yet the handle i'm after is still binded to old account. Grrr

Didn't work for me in 2024. I changed the handle and 2 months later I still couldn't use the handle in my new channel. I even deleted the old channel, and still cant use the original handle.
That’s because you can have up to two handles reserved. When you change your handle to the third name, your first original handle gets dropped.
So the reason was because it was still in the reserve, you had to change it again. Since you deleted the channel, you probably could try to retrieve it, but it’s possible you locked yourself out forever

@@balrajrai8071 Yeah I figured the same. But that's a very annoying process, because now I need to make sure I'm ready once the old handle is being released. And I bet it's not going to be exactly 14*24*60*60 seconds since my last change. And if you're not in time, your handle might get squatted.

didnt work for me, probably because of the "brand" channel. I wish i didnt lose that name for good, im not able to create new channels with that handle but I also cant claim it back before the 14 days I assume, even though its now pushed to be my third user... i dont know anymore x_x was using desktop

@@5hubh4m Hi, after 14 days I tried to change the username in my brand channel again, and it said it was taken. The username was still available for my original account. So I didn't lose the handle from the original channel, despite pushing it from the handle list. Unfortunately this method doesnt seem to work with the branded channels (channel within a channel) but you wont lose the username for trying apparently.

Following this advice made me lose my channel name :( Maybe something has changed within the year but you can only change your name twice in 14 days. That did not release my domain name at all and now I'm locked into some stupid name that isn't what I wanted. SMH
