    I've only just discovered your channel but the timing was perfect. Thanks to you I've been able to make an informed decision for choosing between two products. I see it's been a few months since your last video and I really do hope that you keep the channel going because your reviewing style so far is second to none. The videos might be a little long but you cut right through any hype or preconceptions surrounding a product. I can't wait to see what you've got to say about the Thrustmaster Warthog.
    Please, keep up the good work!

    Hi, it's nice that you made this video! I have this whole Thrustmaster FCS HOTAS set of 3 parts in use. What bothered me about the TWCS Trottle for a long time was that it wasn't so smooth in the throttle function. The solution was to loosen the screw which adjust the pressure on the rails. What I find strange in this video is that you don't talk about it but only about the lubricant! I think this screw 'function' is the most important for the customer after buying this TWCS and noticing that the whole ground plate is sliding on the table with giving more / less thrust! I read a lot of reviews of customers and it seems that the smoothness of the throttle function is not out of the box equal for every device! For mine it needed adjustment but not yours because you didn't even talk about it in this video... Anyway, many thanks for your time and the video was very helpful for me in comparing the TWCS inside with mine!

      Hey, I have the same issue. Bought silicone grease (made for plastics on to metal / plastic on to plastic). Works great now. However, it is missing the "notch" for the mid (50%) throttle..

      Not to mention, there's even an extra hole in the bottom of the casing (see 20:43) that makes the tension screw accessible without having to open up the entire case! Lovely stuff.

    Man, I'm enjoying this way more than I should. Top work. Especially regarding the older reviews as well. As in, stating personal bias and expectations from the product, stating facts about the product to convey whether or not it suits a certain set of preferences. I know I'm late to the party, but this definitely deserved a "Excellent work". Top stuff.

    Worth noting that this is about the only throttle on the market that's any good for HOTAM space sim users (at least until VKB eventually release theirs). This is because the rudder paddles can be used for roll, while the analogue stick gives you 2 axis strafe. Now if only it had a center detente for full range throttle use - however it's relatively cheap and can easily be taken apart to mod it. By the way CB we miss your wonderful hardware reviews I hope you will get back to it one day!

    Personally I find I need the thumb dexterity more for accurately pushing one of the 3 d-pad/hat switches/extra button (13 buttons) than I need for the stick, I find the stick under finger does take a slight getting used to but is placed well. Throttle is the best piece of the system for button layout, imo. The stick part I think suffers from a lack of buttons accessable one handed, which you often are when using a HOTAS system where you have the throttle for the other hand. Without the throttle as a stand alone stick, its not TOO bad, but its sensitivity and smoothness are very nice

    Hi Baryon,
    Amazing and very thorough review! I also watched your CH Throttle review and find it very detailed.
    I currently have a CH Throttle and considering getting one of these as replacement.
    You did however raise a valid point in regards to the awkwardness of using the mini stick with the index finger.
    Do you think using the mini stick with the index finger can be a matter of practice? Do you feel that you can get used to do precision movements with the index while simultaneously using the throttle and the other buttons?

    Thanks for the disassembly video.
    I wanted to swap the analog stick and uppermost pov stick so I could have my analog multi-directional throttle at my thumb rather than forefinger.
    Seeing them mounted to the pcb is a bummer, but it looks like there may be enough room for some fabricated mounting plates for those two sticks and I can just run some leads to their respective boards.

    Now owning this throttle and the TM16000M stick I can tell that the potentiometers for the Z axis do fail (signal is wiggeling around) on both devices after some time.
    You need to disassemble the potentiometer and clean its contacts to be able to use it again.
    Beside that the devices are great but I personally would buy something else after my experience with it.

    did you ever get a problem where every time you reconnect the throttle with the rudder on the computer you get a crazy ratio of command on the pedals? like step just a bit and it apply full brake, move the rudder a little and it goes full until you repeat these movements sometimes? If so, how to solve it? Looked around without much success.

    Re: the button on the little joystick, in the drivers for the throttle may be a setting that helps.
    (These throttles’ drivers are ridiculously bundled with the drivers for the *PEDALS, and the t.flight HOTAS series devices, the latter of which have a throttle already permanently connected via a cord to their throttle, rather than with the package which includes the t16000m’s driver!)
    In the driver settings is an option for a dead zone on that thumb stick.
    Why that setting isn’t in the T.A.R.G.E.T. software they gave us to set up these devices in all ways from simple mapping, turning off LEDs, etc. all the way up to the ability to write actual code for every input ourselves,
    is a mystery.
    Older video, but if I came across it, some others will also. Hope this helps.

  • @Gamingoodz

    I know this video is old but I had to take mine apart as the grease inside had too much dust in it and just wasnt enough in the first place so the throttle movement was really jerky and would catch all the time trying to make smooth movementts was imposible.
    I took the whole rail system apart and cleaned off the old grease and put new grease one. I used SLick honey grease I use for my Mountain bike suspension which I know is safe for seals and I assume plastics.
    Works like butter now. Argh it was soo damn frustrating trying to use it before this. It seems this is a product that requres some maintenance since the system isnt sealed any dust etc. can and will get into the moving parts.

Now that I want to get back into flight sims and space stuff I am looking around and all I see are these plastic monsters that are at least $100 to get anything functional and at least $200 for anything functional and mildly less toylike.
    Is it so bad that I want something that just works and doesn't feel like a hollow plastic toy? (this is sort of a cry for recommendations)

    Great review. Thanks for going the extra mile and stripping these apart like you do. I am thinking of creating a frankenstick from this throttle and a T16000m.... depends if I can mount that little microcontroller in the base of the throttle, in the base of the stick..... Do you think it would fit?

    • @CharmedBaryon
      @CharmedBaryon  7 лет назад

      Thanks for the compliments! Technically the microcontroller means just the IC so of course it fits, but the overall PCB might be a challenge. It isn't made to fit in a T16000m and the mount points won't line up. It would require significant modding.

      I am going to be doing this too, whenever they deliver it. On the Star Citizen hardware forum someone describes how he did it. He has some photos and descriptions. He mounted the PCB for the throttle by taking out the weights and using putty for a few standoffs for screws. Unfortunately he glosses over a few points. He disabled the twist in his but I would like to keep it. I cannot find a video of anyone dismantling the stick, not even the old one. When can we expect Part 2?
      PS- I have seen the 'button mod' video, and neither me nor youtube captions can make out what he is mumbling.

    Do you think you could map the slider inversely, and make do with a "DIY" Left handed throttle?
    And just get used to the buttons being where they are over time? (The best thing about the T1600 was its Left-Handed capability - it's a real shame they didn't continue with this design ethos with the throttle - as the 'throttle' slider on the original T1600 was BY FAR the worst aspect of the flight-stick imo - so loose and wonky!) :S

      I don't use my T.16000M FCS stick anymore because of the throttle slider which was interfering the yaw function of the stick. Very annoyable with helicopters. So the yaw of the stick and the throttle slider didn't work well together. I didn't use the functions anymore for a while but then I bought a better stick! With its own software of Thrustmaster I started noticing this malfunction. At the end I must say that I am not impressed at all by quality of this whole set. On Reddit you can read a lot of problems concerning this set. For me it was better to spend a little bit more money for real quality from start for my flight simulators. I use now the VKBsim Gladiator MKII Flight Stick (SKU: VKBSIM-S-GL-MK2-STD-001).

    Great review as always, I have this throttle and it's awesome but I'm using mouse with right hand still at the moment because I'm not a fan of any of the sticks out there (at least none of the ones you can buy seperately). Maybe I will get a Warthog standalone stick if it's ever at a reasonable price. Anyway I just wanted to say my POV hat makes the same noise in all directions so it must be something with the unit you reviewed. Also worth pointing out you can set deadzones and nicely customisable curves on the T.A.R.G.E.T software. I found the rudder paddles a bit sensitive so I set it to have a nice curve and now and now I can do better precision rolling in Elite Dangerous with it.

    It still uses a pot as the axis? whats stopping me from just getting some slide pots and tearing apart my secondary Logitech wheel and just rebuilding that as a hotas? motivation? Yea, lets go with that.

    Hi, Which software are you using to test the functions of the joystick pls ?

  • @Xon1984

    Thx for the great in in depth review. I have been looking forward to this throttle for DCS, Arma and Star Citizen. So did you apply better grease to the rails to see whether the last bit of initial movement friction would disappear? Secondly, i hoped to be able to forego extra pedals for a while since it has this awesome big springloaded rocker in the front. Do you think this allows decent enough analog yaw control for something like dcs planes? The twist of my t.16000m kinda does not cut it there.

    • @CharmedBaryon
      @CharmedBaryon  7 лет назад +3

      Haven't tried regreasing yet. I'm going to do a series of videos on some simple mods for various products including this one, and regreasing will be a recurring theme. I have several greases I'll review for this, including an over the counter silicone grease (basically equivalent to what it already has), Nyogel 767a (the gold standard for flight sim gear), and Nyogel 760g (cheaper and more readily available tjam 767a, not made specifically for this use but good to see if it can provide a budget option for a good grease).
      I do like the rocker more than the twist on the joystick since it has no bleed issues, although I've mapped it to forward/reverse strafing rather than yaw. Crazy thing is the default FCS HOTAS bindings E:D has out of the box don't even use it in normal flight, just for left/right tab in interfaces! Quite a waste.

      Charmed Baryon You likely to do one for TFRP? My unit isn't terrible but still I'd like to improve them a little.

    • @Xon1984
      @Xon1984 7 лет назад +1

      Charmed Baryon since you had opened the throttle and pointed out that the mini joysticks placement in front was rather poor, do you think it can be moved to the side/thumbs position e.g. exchange position with one of the 8 way heads? For space games (star citizen) it would be great to put rotate on the big grey rocker on the throttle, but then u could not really simultaneously use the mini joystick with your index finger for vertical/horizontal strafing.

    Why do you call the main throttle sensor a potentiometer? Is it not a magnetic sensor?

    • @rofie6682
      @rofie6682 6 лет назад

      From what I understand, a potentiometer translates linear or rotary motion to an electrical signal, think of something like a volume slider, and the sliding bit rotates just that part as if it was pushing against a lever.

    Concerning the buttons: Do you dislike rubber domes because of the feel or because you've found they have shorter wear life than cheap tac switches?
    The only rubber dome type switch I'm familiar with would be those found in game console controllers like a Nintendo, which seem to last quite a while to my perception.

    Nice review. How long did it take you to make the software? What language(s)? I'm curious.

    • @CharmedBaryon
      @CharmedBaryon  7 лет назад +1

      The software is still in progress and actually being rewritten as a new product, so the clock is still ticking. What you see here probably took ~5 day, but has was killed shortly after. A rewrite is in progress, which makes this a general programmable user mode IO driver (basically something like CH Control Manager or TARGET but a lot more powerful and vendor independent). The version seen here is written in C# on the .NET platform. The next gen version is in C++/Qt, has a much improved UI, and is cross-platform (Windows and Linux targetted for version 1, Mac to be added in version 2). Everything will be released to the public under an open source license when it's ready.
      I will have some software (and hardware) related product announcements in the future where I will discuss details.

      Charmed Baryon Nice! Thanks for the informative response. I assume your writing the software by yourself and if so that's awesome as a beginner programmer I really appreciate the time and effort it takes to make stuff from scratch being new making anything like this right now is a bit far off. Keep up the good work.

      This one, i've had mine for 3-4 weeks, that's about how long you can use a X52 pro before sending it back. I wanted a X52 pro or a X56 but i have had Saitek gear before and was a bit wary about the quality. To no surprise a few Google searches later confirmed my worries. Saitek still has no clue how to do simple QA or do soldering.
