This whole cotton things shits me up the wall. Back in 2010 when I was in uni we had an entire lecture just on how the Murray Darling Basin was being mismanaged. That's how far back this goes. Not only were scientist researching it they had collated their findings and it was being taught as a case study for mismanagement. They had the results showing that the nitrogen and salt content in the rivers had risen causing fish deaths. The soil had salt concentrations that were killing trees, adding to that the water table underground was so low, due to farmers pumping water directly from the water table, meaning the trees were barely getting any water. The banks of the river were collapsing because the trees that were holding the soil in place had died. This was again messing with the nutrient levels in the water. It was a massive shit show back then and it's even worse now.
Cotton uses about 1gigalitre of water per acre (sorry I'm an oldszeimer), rice about 5x that, and if we build more dams then the water intensive crops will just increase, so when drought comes, then they'll be more pressures, where's the water to stop evaporation at 1% per week in the onsite water dams, have a look at colly downs setup to see how huge it is, and water pumps are more than not rigged with bypassers allowing for 20% unmeasured water through, been there seen that
The solution to all of this is more dams on the coast, particularly in areas of high rainfall and a pipeline system out west to farmers and the Murray darling river system. Solved. Cost a shit ton of money, but the increased yields and as a result increased taxes will pay for itself in due time.
Should grow hemp. Cotton is not suited to the environment they are growing it in, it uses way to much water, then the river is no longer a river, just a series of largish puddles.
