    Australia is the second driest continent on the planet, so if we plan to grow cotton and rice for more then a couple of more months, isn't it about time we started building de-saltianation plants or stopped dumping our waste water in the ocean? The situation is only going to get worse in the coming years, but being Australia we'll ignore that and just hope it rains. Eventually. Somewhere.

      @MortifiedU 5 лет назад +60

      @@mikespearwood3914 WHAT? what about global warming, are you saying we should just throw our hands in the air and yell ' global warming' and do nothing else... If you are not part of the solution you are part of the problem. The Murray Darling was flowing for 200+ years before the cotton farmers got their water allocation. But nope, lets blame global warming.

      Desalination is energy intensive and then you create a new problem of expensive water of a different kind. Also, most plants dont last as long as you might hope as their membranes get screwed up pretty bad.

    • @MortifiedU
      @MortifiedU 5 лет назад +32

      Remember we did investigate recycled water.. but the media grabbed hold of the 'poo water' slogan and stupid sheep voted against it.. In Dubai they have two massive desalination plants, and the citizens can use as much water as they like. In England they recycle water and have done for years.. In Australia the inventors of the solar cell, wifi amongst many other things, we pray for rain..

    • @rogerwagner6940
      @rogerwagner6940 5 лет назад +6

      We do have desalination plants. They aren't used, they cost billions to build and annually cost 100's of millions to keep in standby mode. The issue is water usually only falls within a few 100km of the coastal regions. It frequently falls in excess (floods), but you need to move it inland.

    About 2 weeks ago I went with an SBS reporter and went and filmed the Nyah/Vinifera Forest devastation. I’m a videographer and the people that hired me were for fixing the river and stop the drought around the Murray River. I heard about all the trees beginning to die and learnt about ring trees. It’s pretty fucked up that because of all this black water and water distribution issues that one of my favourite camping spots will eventually be whipped out.

    During the 2019 NSW Lib. state election campaign, when #GuiltyGladys & Co. touted "5000 more nurses" they didn't provide the other half of that election promise which is that those 5000 more nurses were part of normal workforce growth taking into account attrition and retirement. Nor did that election promise include the skill mix included in that number. That is, that many of them would be new graduate and junior nurses who then require the support of more senior, experienced and skilled nurses each and every shift which obviously adds to the workload of those nurses. Also, that is 5000 nurses across every public hospital in NSW.

    See thats what I hate about us in New south wales. Our government is literally tearing our environment apart and selling everything off for meagre profits but its the music festivals that get people in an uproar. We deserve this

    This whole cotton things shits me up the wall. Back in 2010 when I was in uni we had an entire lecture just on how the Murray Darling Basin was being mismanaged. That's how far back this goes. Not only were scientist researching it they had collated their findings and it was being taught as a case study for mismanagement. They had the results showing that the nitrogen and salt content in the rivers had risen causing fish deaths. The soil had salt concentrations that were killing trees, adding to that the water table underground was so low, due to farmers pumping water directly from the water table, meaning the trees were barely getting any water. The banks of the river were collapsing because the trees that were holding the soil in place had died. This was again messing with the nutrient levels in the water.
    It was a massive shit show back then and it's even worse now.

    Cotton uses about 1gigalitre of water per acre (sorry I'm an oldszeimer), rice about 5x that, and if we build more dams then the water intensive crops will just increase, so when drought comes, then they'll be more pressures, where's the water to stop evaporation at 1% per week in the onsite water dams, have a look at colly downs setup to see how huge it is, and water pumps are more than not rigged with bypassers allowing for 20% unmeasured water through, been there seen that

    The solution to all of this is more dams on the coast, particularly in areas of high rainfall and a pipeline system out west to farmers and the Murray darling river system. Solved. Cost a shit ton of money, but the increased yields and as a result increased taxes will pay for itself in due time.

    Should grow hemp. Cotton is not suited to the environment they are growing it in, it uses way to much water, then the river is no longer a river, just a series of largish puddles.
