    It is a common question. The energy released is just some fraction (less than 100%) of the energy that you needed to expend to lift the dominos into place. So there is no net gain of energy to be harnessed.

      Speaking of chain reactions, did you know that your comment is anti zionist until I open it up to see what you really wrote? It reads:
      "Zionism goes much deeper than most people realize! Look up The Noahide Laws and you'll see what I'm talking about!"
      I like your actual comment better, and please understand that this means your account is being used for social engineering via aggressive propaganda to agitate the public. I spoke with someone from NZ yesterday, the 8th of May, in the year 2019, who reported that the reactions to such comments are being gathered to label people as anti semitic. They have equated anti zionism with anti semitism and white supremacy. In NZ, the authorities are visiting the homes of those people they have falsely labeled white supremacists, and their firearms are being confiscated. Do you think it is acceptable to use your account, which is likely dormant, to divide us? I write this to inform anyone who reads it of what is being weaponized against us. Chain reactions can be stopped by not reacting. The h8 is fake, the struggle is real. Fight for truth.

    No: in principle a constant density will work fine. They are just hard to handle and set up if they are too light.

  • @smorris123
    @smorris123  11 лет назад +21

    This won't work. The collisions between dominos are necessarily inelastic. So some energy is lost to heat on each collision. Plus some energy is lost to heat when the dominos slide along each other with friction. Frictionless, perfectly elastic dominos would behave very differently. They would bounce back and never stop vibrating around.

    • @YKLWEF
      @YKLWEF 7 лет назад +1

      Ironically, the inelastic reality is easier to model, as long as you know the coefficient of friction of the sliding material(s). Doing a time-history on the bouncing, vibrating elastic model would be a challenge!

    Geosynchronous means an orbit with a period of 24 hours. The moon's period is about 27 days. I think what you had in mind is that the same side of the moon always faces the earth. This is due to tidal locking.

    At 1:28 he says that we're "storing" gravitational potential energy in the domino. I totally get how this is a helpful explanation and visualization, but it also introduces confusion since there really isn't any "stored" energy in the system. But still. VERY cool demonstration. I'm totally saving this one.

    • @smorris123
      @smorris123  5 лет назад

      How is it "not stored"? Seems pretty correct to me. My physical effort ends up as gravitational potential energy that is later released.

    • @smorris123
      @smorris123  5 лет назад

      Of course the system is very dissipative --- lots of friction and inelastic collisions that turn the "stored" gravitational potential energy into heat. But the energy is stored while the dominos are all standing up.

    • @JonathanLaRiviere
      @JonathanLaRiviere 5 лет назад

      @@smorris123 thanks for the replies! And I understand what you're saying, but I still don't understand how the energy is stored or in what form it is stored. Consider the following example so that maybe you can explain it to me: we have a hole that is 100 meters deep. We also have a rock on the ground next to that hole. I pick up the rock and drop it on the ground. I pick up the rock again and drop it down the hole. Did it have two different potential energies at the same time? Did the potential energy change based on where it would go in the future? If the rock wasn't "lifted" 100m (~102m), did it have the potential energy to fall 100m at some point?

    • @smorris123
      @smorris123  5 лет назад

      Potential energy is always relative to some arbitrary level. Once you decide where zero is, everything is fixed relative to that. Only differences matter. Potential energy can be negative. It does not need to know about its future values. Go read a first year textbook.

    • @smorris123
      @smorris123  5 лет назад

      The rock does not use up energy in order to fall 100m. The gravitational force does work on the rock, adding to its kinetic energy, while reducing its potential energy.

  • @smorris123
    @smorris123  12 лет назад +3

    1.6X would also work. I don't know the theoretical maximum to the scale factor, but I suppose there must be one.

  • @smorris123
    @smorris123  12 лет назад +2

    The smallest ones are made of aluminum. The larger ones are made of plywood (laminated for the big ones). Making the smallest ones out of wood does not work too well as they are too light. They are all painted white to look nice.

    and the 53rd domino would be larger than the earths radius. This is mind-boggling! With this same progression, the 62nd domino is almost big enough to bridge the distance between the Earth and Moon. This is geometric progression. This is also your NIKKEN compensation plan!
    By Consistently working on seemingly small things everyday can accumulate into disproportional results, extraordinary results!

  • @siyata4u
    @siyata4u 12 лет назад

    I think there are amazing lessons to be learned here about our actions and what we say to others: We just need to exert the energy that makes positive change, physically or verbally, that is just a little bit more than what we would normally do - and let that domino effect have a reaction across the world!

      When you understand the power of the domino effect and you have seen the timeline for all the major cataclysms documented in historic records and you know another - much larger - cataclysm is coming, and if you've managed to continue to do your research, you would also have realized the power of the domino effect is precisely the force that broke and subducted the tectonic plates, it's the force that carved out the ocean trenches and placed the archipelago islands in place - it's the exponential power of the domino effect that resulted in the explosion of thousands of volcanoes along the Pacific Ring of Fire - all in under 24 hours - and when you see the exact date for that devastation recorded in different languages by people more than 16,000 km apart - because of your unusual tenacity, you know the few places on Earth that will be relatively safe from the next domino effect that will destroy most of our world - and since you know the CO2 scare is a scam, the 2C lunacy has come and gone, etc. - you know the true horror that's rapidly approaching so you've already packed and relocated, stocked up and mentally and emotionally prepared while the less aware twiddle their thumbs as if they can think of nothing better to do - the existential crisis related to climate collapse is not what most people think it is

    The exact dimensions are not that crucial. Here, the smallest one in the movie is about 8mm high (I have an even smaller one which is 5mm high, but it is hard to handle). The largest one is 42 X 21 X 4.5 inches. The larger ones are made of laminated particle board and the smaller ones are made of aluminum (which is easy to machine). We also have some small ones made of plastic, but again, they are so light as to be hard to handle.

    Well, my demo was made to fall over spectacularly, not to demonstrate energy conservation. So I cheated a bit on the density. But of course energy is still conserved --- sort of. Energy is turned into heat when the dominos bounce to a stop after falling. Also, there is some friction in how they slide over one another (friction turns kinetic and potential energy into heat). Still, the demo shows how you can release stored gravitational potential energy with a little push. They are all solid.

    COOL even with my BSc. in physics, my first guess would be that the change won't happen and that the process will stop in the middle, because of the great difference in mass between the tiny dominos and the bigger ones (newtons law about mutual effect) so... I could almost imagine how the smaller domino will bounce back.
    Of course I completely forgot the source of the energy for the whole thing here. the STORED energy in the erected dominos.

    I wonder if it can be even mor than 1.5x because you have the added weight of the previous dominos stacked on top of each other. Pause at 2:19

    Potential Energy is the name. So obvious. Learnt at school more that 60 years ago - we all did.

    Analogy: The butterfly effect, that is the concept that small causes can have large effects. Initially, it was used with weather prediction but later the term became a metaphor used in and out of science.

    This is pretty much exactly what is done with "pumped storage" hydroelectric power systems, except they use water instead of dominos. Surplus power is used to lift water to a higher reservoir. The energy is thereby stored as potential energy. When the power is needed, the water is allowed to fall back down through a turbine. Most of the energy used to lift the water is recovered.

      Stephen Morris this requires a lake above another lake to work though, however once you can find one you basically have a giant cell.

      Rather than over complicating it with ‘potential energy’, could a hydroelectric power system just simply be explained by water finding its level?

    This is awesome to think about, thanks Mr Morris!
