- This is how to use the shove tool end of a FirePik from FirefighterSwipeTool.com
PLEASE READ: Many people, presumably locksmiths and construction workers, are pointing out that this tool will not work if the lock is installed properly. In my 20 years in the fire service, it is rare that we come upon a perfectly installed door and lock. If you do, all you have to do is use an aluminum wedge to gap the door where the lock is. This will cause the deadlatch/deadpin/anti-loiding pin to fully extend and then this tool will work. Future video will show this.

Honestly most door locks in the US don't have safety pins and can be picked by an amateur in about 3 seconds flat. In addition to that many doors have their hinge pins on the outside, which can be knocked out fairly easily and then the door can be walked away from the frame

I am confused. If you have to slam the door shut to use the tool. Then you already have the door open.
You could probably hit the door to get it "slammed shut" while its still closed

Thats what I was thinking. If you can slam it then you already have access and don't need the tool, which is great, but that darn pin defeats it every time.
Hehehe yep this only works when the door is installed with the wrong strike plate (the rounded pin is not supposed to fit in the hole) so people fuck up the installation by cutting corners so often that firefighters can access doors some what reliably enough to make a tool for it
@@mat100ca that was my thought. This thing is fuckin useless to get into any doors I've ever installed locks on. Kinda surprised people would spend money on locks and then do a half ass job installing them.
If the strike plate and door are installed correctly this will not work. However it is EXTREMELY common for them to be misaligned allowing this attack to work often enough for this tool to be worth it. If you are ever locked in, you can use a credit card, (although it may not work depending on the specific door’s geometry). A bent wire coat hanger can work for really loose doors too. This tool will work better though as it is more ridged and reliable. This is also a great tool to have if you have kids or pets so they can’t lock them selfs in.
Yes dogs and cats can lock them selfs in rooms if the door closes and they are jumping up on the door pawing the lock. It has happened to me and my dog was stuck in my room for a while. Not before he panicked and dug a hole in the floor and tore up the curtains. It wouldn’t have been bad if I could just have opened the door easily and quickly with this tool instead of fumbling with credit cards and wire.
Kind of my thought too, but why buy his expensive overpriced tool when you can just carry a butter knife with you. And in addition, most doors you're trying to get through open inwards for this very reason or at least they have a security plate covering the jam. There's lots of great videos of the fire department showing how you enter an inward opening door with deadbolts and reinforced, and properly installed doors and jams. They basically Hammer a wedge in with their ax and then use it as a lever. I can't imagine an actual firefighter fumbling with this tool with his gloved hands when he could probably pull the hinge pins.
A simple razor knife works a lot faster
But that's from the interior, the difficulty comes up when you have to do it from the exterior.

That is a bypass tool, not lock picking.

However, im not saying this bypass device is not critical.

never thought i'd use one of these for hvac work to get through doors in buildings where the building engineers or security guards either do not have the right keys or they have no access to it and want me to fix the AC RIGHT NOW!
On locks made in the last few decades this only works if your strike plate is improperly installed. Latch slipping only works if the deadlatch plunger (the tiny spring loaded peice next to the main latch) isn't properly engaged. That plunger should be pushed in by the strike plate and it will lock the main plunger from being retracted. You can test this by holding down the deadlatch plunger with your finger and trying to push in the main plunger.

Your doing this from inside! No need for a tool for that. You will have a much harder time from the outside, especially with you solid straight tool.
There are 2 types of doors. Inward opening and outward opening. This is an example of an outward opening door which is commonly found on commercial properties. For inward opening doors I recommend the Firefighter Swipe Tool for the job.

Again, these only work if there's a fault with the security latch (that half-barrel pin) or the striker plate.
You can still get it like that if its working.... just rmtakes a tad longer
@@51-FS Not if the latch is working properly. When that security shaft is pressed in, the latch can't be forced back.
Even the makers of other similar tools have commented that they rely on the fact that most doors are not installed properly. In this video he reveals that by saying the door needs to be slammed. He's relying on the striker plate being installed incorrectly, excess space between the wall & the jam or a shotty frame.
Just a note, most secure places the doors open inward so you're not going to have access to the latch. They're usually going to be steel and if they do open outwards they'll have a security plate. In another video he shows how he jams lockdown with a hammer, as if that would actually work. You could see where he had scraped away the paint from knocking it down before and was acting like all you had to do was give it a good knock and you could get open any door. He doesn't tell anyone that the inside of the door had been destroyed in previous attempts. Want to save yourself money, bring yourself a butter knife. It'll work just as good and it's heavy enough that you'll be able to jam it through the jam of an inward opening door and retract the latch. Kind of like you used to do the bathroom door when somebody locked it on you.

@@51-FS if you're a locksmith, and the security latch is installed properly, as well as the striker plate, the space between the door and the jam and the depth of the door in the jam, exactly how does a tool like that open it, just taking a "little" longer. If that security pin is retracted, there's a physical barrier to the latch opening. Particularly within outward opening door, it'd be easier to use a pry bar and does rip the jam apart.
And two other things I will note. You commented earlier that "you are not going to get in my house with one of those" adding "that you use a Kwik set". That says it all, anyone who uses a quick set and expects high security from picking one unless wafers are added to lock the mechanism up, there are relatively easy lock to pick. On the other hand, in just about every video this guy makes, is some totally shitty lock, door, jam and presenter I have ever witnessed.

2 things...locks only keep honest people out. 2nd making tools like this may start as a good idea but most likely your profit on purchases will be made from the bad guys.
I'd say otherwise. Most doors on houses have measures to protect against attacks like this or open inwards, and most business have different styles of locks as well. This is mostly for interior doors of houses, like a bathroom door somebody locked on the way out.

Lock picking and bypassing has been around for ages, and criminals don't use it. It's much easier and quicker to carry a pair of bolt cutters to cut a padlock than it is to pick it for example
No we just kick the door in or bust out a window...... some times we use a pocket knife to do it just like he did..... if we do use any kinda special tool its a bump key
That's all fine and dandy if the dead latch doesn't engage.

Yes, while these work on residential doors, they are really meant for commercial. For residential doors we use the In&Out Firefighter Swipe Tool.
That will not retract unless you get the anti-pick pin to go into the hole so unless there’s slack in that door jam that thing will not work I install doors and hardware for a living I should know

The whole purpose of the Firefighter Swipe Tool is that it CAN go around molding. This video is for the FirePik which is mainly meant for outward opening doors, or inward opening doors by pushing it through the molding.

You need to do from the outside of the door. The idea is your trying to get in. Not getting a out. You can get out easy as there is no jam in the way.

I bought one of these. They aren't anything special. There inexpensive shove tool sets that do more, available that have much better handles, and thinner shafts that will access more latches. The shaft on these are too thick. The handle/grip area is awkward to hold.
Since when did firefighters care about damaging anything? I thought brute force was always the first thing used when a house is on fire?
And what if it's a medical emergency. Sure grandma's fine other than her broken hip, but we decided the fire fighters only need to know how their axe works so they're going to just break 3 doors and a window to make sure she gets help.
Fires makes up less than 1% of the calls they go on. This is for the 99%

Nope, this tool isn’t for deadbolts and we have found most people don’t actually lock their deadbolts when they leave their house.

Most houses we encounter do not have their deadbolts locked, just the knob locked.

There are 2 types of doors. Outward opening and inward opening. I have video for both. Even your style door that is inward opening with molding. I use a Firefighter Swipe Tool for that.
I keep reading the comments on these videos... Everyone is amazed that the tools, lock picks, etc. aren't illegal. This is the mindset we're facing...
Wev'e been convinced that everything possible to commit a crime with should be illegal. Should a butter knife be illegal, too? They're used all the time. CRIME is illegal, crime is an act perpetrated by people, not things.
Some things WILL bring more charges if you use them during commission of a crime, such as lock picks. Also crow bars, hammers, screwdrivers, hatchets, etc. Should they be illegal because they make it easier to gain forced/unauthorized access??? Or to threaten another person???
It's the old "Guns don't kill people, people kill people." scenario. A gun doesn't jump up and shoot someone. It's just a tool, like lock picks are a tool.
The point of my rant? Crime is a thoughtful act committed by people. Punish the person for the crime, not inanimate objects which have no will of use.

I'm a veteran, a locksmith (not practiced for years) automotive tech, an expert marksman, etc., and I'm tired of e everyone being afraid of everything, thinking everything should be illegal and a cop should be waiting around every corner for them to call 911.
I hope that someone reads these comments and stops to realize that their fate is in their hands, not the bad guys, or even the good guys.... But thank goodness for the good guys. 😉 People can do so much to help themselves. Learning about these flaws in their security may motivate them to do something about it or at least be aware. (Not that I want to make your job harder). 😉

You can literally do the same thing with a credit card use a deadbolt.

Most deadbolts, chain locks, and door bars would prevent this tool from being useful, most deadbolts are a straight bar that goes into your door frame, but some are angled for firefighters to gain access. Door bars (the extra lock you see at hotels a lot of the time) are easily broken into with a rubber band and duct tape, chains are so thin, simple wire cutters can break into them, the best security is a deadbolt with a straight bolt.

@Half as long Twice as skinny life’s really not all that difficult unless you make it . It’s simple you either walk or run out the door ect . On the other hand which we are talking about is the view of a thieving ass intruder getting out without consequences.
Wait, kwiksets are notorious for being average security at best...
I have no success with this type of tool, i find mica shims much more efficient.
Better hope people don't figure out how to properly install doors.

or just make sure your door has a guard plate over the bolt.
Or use a EU door lock insted of these trash ones, that tool would be useless in that case, you just have to replace the handle + lock.

"Reasonable measures" makes you set in the eyes of the law, being able to defend yourself makes you set in the eyes of God and justice. Especially when you're protecting your family.
An alarm and a dog are the best things to ward off an intruder(s). Being armed (doesn't have to be a gun) works when they don't. :)
@@MtnBadger Sure but in this case we are talking about this tool specifically i know that a theif has other options that's just common sense... I'm not into guns the rest of the world seem to be just fine without the tool specifically made to take human life, I'm not the judge, jury and executioner. Home invasions are very very rare, they go for houses without anyone home.

I fully understand... And you're right about stopping this tool but, the simplest cure is just add a plate that covers the door gap to prevent any tools/credit cards, etc. from being used. No lock switch required. I made that comment elsewhere, here and the creator agreed.
My point to my response was more general to the other readers that constantly worry about a tool being illegal (or should be) and concentrating on that issue, lock picks, shim tools, etc., when you can't really make all the possible tools illegal, the concentration should go towards the criminal... His actions are the crime. Stopping him thru preventative measures is important but not guaranteed.
That said, as a general comment... Again, I'm fully agreeing with you that stopping this tool (and anything in the same class) is important and doable as one of several steps in securing your home... Just remember that the firemen have all these tools for a reason. So, it's a double edged sword... If a burglar can't get in, the rescuers probably can't, either. :)
I have guard plates that prevent this tool from being used and jams at the floor level to keep the door from being kicked. It would take an equipped safety/rescue/police crew with a shotgun or other means of blowing through the hinges where they're mounted and then pry the door apart from the frame... lol
But, that's a choice I make in exchange for keeping my home free of "uninvited guests." lol
If I were installing new doors/locks, I'd definitely look into your idea.

(and anyone who *does* break into my house will be begging for the cops to arrest them. ;) I don't believe in letting my family's safety rest in someone else's hands while I do nothing. We have the instinct and right to defend ourselves but, that starts at good locks, as you say and understanding the potential hazards today's cracked-out psychos present. 😀)

The locks come straight out of the box with the ability to fit into its own strike plate. Go to any store and take a lock out of the box and see for yourself. It’s crazy.
@@JobTownTools still caused by cutting corners but in that case then its corners cut at the factory but in my experience most door handles/ mechanisms are sold separately from the strike plate without any reference to the required strike plate (im Canadian not sure if they are handled differently elsewhere) so when i buy a new doorknob i usually have to open the packaging inorder to select the correct strike plate or go to my local locksmiths office to get the doorknob and plate together (they order the doornobs without packaging and manually bag them with the matching plate) its quite annoying that company's who sell doornobs with locks decided to ignore the security features they build into the lock
Ok, not sure about Canada, but all locks sold at our big box stores like Home Depot and Lowe’s comes as a set. Handle, lock, strike plate.

I don't like anyone that sells equipment that possibly will be used to break into someone's home or business. Being violated doest feel good. I know personally.

Tools are legal, it's what you do with them that is not,, like a gun... Though some Tools try to be monitored. You couldn't buy lock picks fir a long time, unless you're a locksmith (I am) but, now, they're everywhere with competitions for the skinny-Jean crowd. And people can make anything, you just have to be smarter than the door.
Yes lock picking tools can be bought anywhere by anyone. If you use it during a crime they will add a charge for having it on you.
Depending on where you are, I own lockpicking tools and frequently use them on a couple locks I lost the key to years ago, but depending on the state you live in they are illegal to carry on your person, you'll be charged with intent of breaking and entering or something similar. Don't take them in a carry on bag on an air plane, check them if you need them.
I'm not a locksmith but have lock picking tools because picking locks is a hobby of mine. I have picked licks for people who have been locked out, however, I can't legally charge them because I'm not a registered locksmith. (Australia)
The knob with the lock on the wrong side is a bad example
Makes no difference which side the knob lock is on for demonstration purposes. Either way the tool functions the same way.
