Ms. May. I am an aspiring teacher in Houston. Just started my certification process and want kindergarten or first grade. I know I just started and not even teaching yet... but boy am I nervous! But it is a life dream to become a teacher. So glad to have found a local teacher on RUclips!

Thanks for the reminder to keep the walls blank! I had a veteran/20 year 1st grade teacher help me get my new 1st grade room ready last month. I started putting “library rules” posters up in my reading nook to elevate the cuteness and she said “whoaaaa. Don’t put those up yet! You want to do a mini lesson on how to behave in the library, how to treat books, how to be a good reader. You’ll want to model, model, model. Then put the posters up as you talk about and review the rules before even letting them go near your library/reading nook.” So, same point you make in this video. Also, can you do a video on what you cover day 1 of school? My school doesn’t do a meet-the-teacher. My grade level team has given me some getting to know you resources that I will use. I’m just a bit overwhelmed with what all to do day 1, 2, 3, 4. I’d love to hear how your first days go!

Good tip! Kids don’t even know what’s up on the wall and your posters are not functional but just wall art instead. I agree about the word wall....I see word walls up filled with words before school even starts and I know kids probably don’t use it because they don’t know what’s on there. Good reminder for all teachers, not just first years. “Fab friends, fab family” could be our name? Another great video. Didn’t realize how much I missed your videos until you started posting again. 😂😀👍🏾

Girl, we don't need a regularly scheduled program. We just need YOU! Meanwhile, thank you for this video. I agree, we put a LOT of pressure on ourselves to design pretty rooms but we need a seasoned teacher to explain the purpose for the decor. It's for learning! 😊 It took me a minute to figure that out 'cuz I was all Pinterest-y and I didn't have your online mentoring yet. As for our name, I'm voting for One Fab Family! 💕

You rock Ms. May! If I can put most of your tips and ideas into practice and channel all that positivity, I know this year as a new first grade teacher in a brand new charter school will be “fabulous”. I am re-entering the public teaching arena after years of homeschooling my two kiddos, so thank you, thank you for all your insight. You are truly One Fab Teacher. FYI- I like “Fab Fans” or “Fab Friendies” as our title! What do ya think? 💕Kellie

I wish that principals would watch this presentation. Some of them expect teachers to have their walls covered and ready to greet students. They forget that a principal is a master teacher and not a master of teachers. Glad to hear that you are back, and thank you for remembering how far you have come.

GREAT, GReat, Great ADVICE! My first year I put all the posters up before the students came to school. Epic fail...just pretty posters on a wall. 😳 Now, I teach it first and then hang it up it in the room. By going through this process I noticed my students refer to the anchor charts often in the classroom. 😁 I am a 3rd grade teacher and noticed throughout the test the students would look up where the anchor chart use to hang. (Posters are covered or taken down during state assessments.) Thank you again Ms. May. May you continue to spread your wisdom and knowledge to us ALL!❤

You are so on point with those tips. I taught in Jamaica for 18 years and that was something I practiced. I found that the students really make use of anchor charts after the lesson is taught and it's placed on the wall. I have just completed my first year as an international teacher in NC and I felt like I was fresh out of college but thanks to some of your videos I was able to get an insight into this new classroom culture. Thanks for all that you do Miss May❤ [Hugs]

Thank you for reminding me that I'll have 20 little interior designers that will help me get my room together. We can put things up together and that gives it more meaning. Gracias!

Lol you had me cracking up when you started saying I have my rules up. I’m like, Ms. May. It’s July. 😂
2:20- real life! 😂 Happens to me all the time while teaching 😂
Your smile and personality always brings me such joy!
“As first year teacher’s we get so caught up on my room has to be all put together.”
So true. It was so much more effective when WE did them together as anchor charts throughout the first week, and then put them up. The kids knew them better and were more apt to follow them because they had a say in creating them. We were also able to discuss them and act them out while creating them. So beneficial.

This video is such great advice. The posters are suppose to serve as tools for the kiddos. In order to use a tool you have to receive instruction first. Then student know where to locate the tool and how to use it once it is posted for the class. I wish there was a Miss May during my early years. You are providing a great service. As a veteran teacher, I get great ideas and the often needed REFRESHER. Side note the scripture writing video helped me in so many ways. Thank you!

Thank.You. I’m a first year teacher here in Houston! I’m hyper-organized and planner-obsessed, so you know a room transformation with allllll the things and posters, etc would have me working 24/7 the rest of the summer. This really takes the pressure off. I’ve also decided to just go with a color scheme instead of a theme.... and only purchase things as I need them. Hopefully I won’t get pressure from my team, but I feel firm in this.

    • @kc-bi6qh
      @kc-bi6qh 5 лет назад

Majda M. Congratulations! You might want to try creating the rules with the kids- that worked best with me. That way the kids are more accountable for them. Of course, you have in mind the rules you want for the classroom, and then align the kids suggestions with your premade list that’s in your head by making suggestions like, “Okay, so we think we should not touch each other’s things, not touch each other’s desk without permission, not get in each other’s backpack, not push, not hit...- what if we said something like keep our hands, feet, and other objects to ourselves? Does that kind of cover all of this? What do you guys think?” That way they feel like they’re responsible for creating the rule, but it was really your rule all along. I would write their suggestions on the white board, and then write the final product on the anchor chart, which will go on the wall. You could even have the kids sign it like a class contact. Just some thoughts 🙂

Oh and I'm a 6 month old teacher....so happy I discovered you! You are definitely God's send! God Bless! Jacks

Wow! I just had a 🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️ moment watching this. I’m so guilty of wanting to have everything up and ready to go before the first day because I don’t want to fool with it once school starts. In my 12 years of teaching, I never thought to put it up as you teach it. 🤦🏻‍♀️
When I watched your video, I was literally saying “duh” the entire time. 😂😂😂 You also helped relieve a lot of my anxiety because I’ve been stressing out about getting my room ready.
All that to say, thank you for sharing this tip that is so logical, yet so often not practiced. 🥰

It’s like you are me and made this video for me. I legit have done and bought everything you said not to 😭. I went on tpt and went crazy through the free stuff and I do think I will use this stuff but also I feel like I went a little overboard in my excited anticipation. My mom is enabling me by taking me to the teacher store to get everything too.
I didn’t even think about having the walls separated by areas to help with organization, honestly that is a very smart thing to do thanks for the tip!

Yes! I am the same way, I have the “skeleton” of the class up. Like with the word wall, as I add the new words on Monday the kids always notice which ones are up there.

Last year was my first year teaching third grade and I agree with your tips completely! This time last year, I was stressed out because my classroom didn’t look like the classrooms on Pinterest. By the first day of school, I was burned out completely from worry and stress. Love you Miss May! 💖💖

Agree! If students do not participate in the creation of charts, it has little to no meaning to them. When we include students in the creation of charts/word walls, it will be much more effective since they will recall.

Beginning of the year when I decided to teach, I watched the majority of your vids. When you posted the first one from your hiatus, I was upset with myself because I thought I had subscribed 😔😔 Now I am. Thanks for this video because I wasn’t sure how this was going to go. I’ve never had the opportunity to do student teaching. It wasn’t my major in undergrad, but I feel it’s my destiny.
