back when i was in the white collar world, mainly as the CFP with a credit union group, but firstly with MSDW for a few years. an investment banker acquaintance taught me early on.. if it's a really serious deal like say a 401k plan etc. see if you can find out who the likely peeps at the presentation would be, competitors, maybe in house plan managers, whatever,... and bring AT LEAST one more person...although i didnt/couldnt do this every time, the times i did, we won every contract.... We in the trades face an uphill battle that was riddled with failure from the start. We get licensed, experienced and a contractors license and BOOM...we can go out and do work.
No reinforcement or obligation to take formal business classes, continuing education beyond the 2-3 hours every couple years, and we wonder why the trades suffer in garnering respect on par with white collar professions. We have to do better. Seminars like this should be the standard.
It is only on the off chance that you have formed a relationship with someone who can point you in these directions- to expore negotiation strategies, knowing what to charge, business acumen, marketing, and book keeping- only then does a contractor have a chance to survive.
There are too many skills and educational requirements needed to jump out and bring dignity to the trades, that no one ever talks about. I'm suffering through it myself.
