- Exercise Steadfast Defender is taking place across Europe with 16,000 British troops involved - but who keeps the operation running from a sustainment and signals perspective?
The British Army's Theatre Enabling Group (TEG) is delivered by personnel from 104 Theatre Sustainment Brigade. It provides vital logistical support to the soldiers on exercise, ranging from rations and fuel, to communications and the securing of diplomatic passes.
Forces News' James Wharton visited the TEG in Germany to find out more about their crucial role in Nato's largest exercise since the Cold War.

Brilliant video this one, great insight to what goes on behind the scenes, hats off to these guys
Logistics isn’t a dirty word we couldn’t do without them makes me proud to be a veteran
In the circus, everyone can't be the lion tamer.
Paraphrasing T.E. Laurence
@@Crustymarine If the Army didn’t have lions medals wouldn’t be won would they plus every man and woman I have worked and fought with in Afghanistan had the heart of a lion that’s the nature of the beast!
The fact this post is edited suggests grammar is also a dirty word.
Maybe even “Un-British.”
@@TheGonzogibby I am British thank you and served my country for 13 years and got injured on Herrick 10 in 2009 have you served yourself?
Crevice is a dirty word....but logistics isn't
They clearly do essential work in their support role.

Thanks for updating us 👍🏼
OMG! those land Rovers are 1980's vintage! you can tell by the door handles and hinge design.
They’ve been kept going for a very specific reason
Good to see the RLC and the TEG get some recognition but the Gurkhas are only 10% of it but get the most limelight.
Great video thumbs up!
"A whopping seven-hour drive" mate, I can leave home here in Sydney, Australia, and drive for seven hours in any direction except East (a bit hard to drive underwater!) and not even leave the State!!
The British Army is nade from different components. All pull together. This works. It intregrates wherever they are are.
On longer an army it's under 100k so defined as a defensive force!!!!
@@TheJon2442 it is The British Army.
@@alanmcmillan6969 fully aware of the numbers. And how many are available to deploy to an actual combat zone... Less than 50k... Too many sick, lame and lazy etc!
I really miss the old documentary-type films this channel used to produce. It's such a shame that it's all just short videos now.
Oh I i don't know, but I i was there for lionheart, crusader, certain shield and a few more. Before we had instant comms and ass covering exercises!
Thank you Gurkhas for your hard work and commitment!
A tiny exercise, I remember Lionheart and Crusader, more troops took part than there are now left in the entire British Army!
cheers dits
Cool story. Is there a shorter version?

@Swatmat don't give him ideas mate. Otherwise, we'll end up with post after post about how it's a real weapon that fires a real round, unlike the piffle 5.56 that the SA80 fires.
You cannot mass like this on a modern battlefield, cheap weapons will always overwhelm defenses, the European countries have to fight in place, no giant reinforcement will be tenable, combat units will have to be trained and disbursed, Reforger style exercises wouldn’t work in the 1980s and certainly won’t work today
“NO KID EVER GREW UP PLAYING SERVICE BATTALION!!!!” Hahahahaha
I enjoy military history, World War 2 in particular. As a kid it was the shooty bang bang stuff. The older I get, the more I'm fascinated how you get a tin of rations to a soldier fighting in the Burmese jungle.
Why doesn’t the military consult with civilian logistic companies.. companies that operate long distances all over Europe.. military is so out of date and not efficient
Because in a war you can't rely on Amazon staff to bring you bullets and bully beef. They won't be there.
Some peacetime logistics are outsourced. But there is a risk of becoming lazy and unskilled.
You could be russian spies
It does. There are also military units that do it in a military way. Most Civilian hauliers aren’t allowed to take a lot of the kit the military needs. They can move a lot of bulky stuff, ISO’s, vehicles, armour etc. but there’s a lot of kit civvies aren’t allowed to take.

RLC awesome ,
was on steadfast defender its finished now, and we take it all with us nothing has come from these guys its delivered to home base and we take it all with us loool
I guess they are looking at replen here. Replenishment. Sustainment. After you have been in position for a while and used your initial supplies.
Former loggy. Looking at some photos, shouldn't we be training, more than ever, to break up the vehicles and supplies? Rather than cluster them? Be unpredictable. Avoid drones, long-range missiles & air assets. Maybe some pics were just photo opportunities.
they've forgotten the basics . including how dumb it is to tell the potential enemies about organisational structure and placement of assets
@CastleHassall yes the videos are odd aren't they? Give away alot of info. But I suppose the exercises are propaganda to show we are active, flexing our muscle etc. But sometimes the detail is a bit OTT. Catch 22. I hope our general staff are sharp, not on the golf course or planning the kitchen extension, or their politican career most the time. That can be our downfall.
Nothing Compared to ex Lionheart and Crusader
Yes when the UK had an army. But at least everyone currently is fully woke and annual diversity indoctrination trained!

Gurkhas doing logistics seemes a bit weird for me. Just had a wee look at this regiment, all drivers, cooks, petrol attendants etc.
I'm sure they do an awesome job, it just seems a shame to have this proud and capable force doing just this.
It's all a specialised division, etc. im just surprised 👍

BTW To the admin team for this site. I'm a UK forces fan and a Gurkhas fan.
I was surprised to see our proud Gurkhas doing/specialising in background logistics. Nothing more.
I'm gonna unsub from the site now 👍
The Brigade of Gurkhas includes infantry, engineering, signal, logistic, training and support units. What were they supposed to be doing, charging up mountains knives unsheathed or creeping around a jungle near Aldershot somewhere?

I'm just surprised they're specialists in things like Petroleum Operatives, etc
They are fully able to defend themselves in event with attack on them
All logistics people are (in theory) infantry trained first so it's not a 'waste'. It means you have key skills within the Regiment. Handling fuel (you mentioned it) can be complex and is crucial to effective combat. Plus they connect with the wider RLC network which (in theory) makes them more effective if things get ever more complex.
Sad
Land rovers? Still? 😂😂😂🤣🤣🤣😂
They get the job done. There will always be a need for something similar. Doesn't need to be for frontline use.
Distracting muzac. Please stop adding it
it is totally dumb how much info you give to the potential enemies
They only release info they're happy to release. Anything above official doesn't get mentioned.
