Firefighter Destini Torres is Breaking the Mold

The duties of a firefighter are very physical and demanding. But Firefighter Destini Torres says she’s proof that anyone can succeed with the mindset and the determination to work hard.
“I don’t want to go into the mindset I can’t do something,” said Torres. “If you want to do this you have to put in the work. It’s all about what kind of message and conversation you’re having with yourself.”
As a woman firefighter who isn’t very tall, Torres says she breaks the mold of what people expect a firefighter to look like. “One of the firefighters was like, ‘Well you're the person I’m gonna be calling when I need to get into a small space. There is a job for everyone out there,’” said Torres. “Anyone on this job, no matter your body type, is figuring out what works for you, how to do the job, and get the job done,” said Torres.
