As you're into rap, you might be surprised to learn "Running up that hill" is one of Big Boi from Outkast's favourite songs and Kate Bush his favourite artist alongside with Bob Marley. Some time ago, he declared they've just recorded a song together. But you also have to know Tupac's favourite song was also a Kate Bush song called "Wuthering Heights" (which is really surprising from a master of rap!). So I suggest you to react to this song which definitely sounds like nothing else...It went to No1 in the UK charts during 4 weeks in 1978, she was only 19 and totally unknown.
And no, Kate Bush is not just an artist from the 70's & the 80's: all her albums went into top ten in UK during 5 decades. In 2014, she put 8 of her albums in the charts simultaneously, just after Elvis and The Beatles. She's one of the most respected pop artists everywhere except the USA.

Kate was signed to EMI in 1976 when she was 16 years old. Discovered by David Gilmore from Pink Floyd. She had written over 200 songs by the time she was signed. She was a pioneer right from the beginning. The first female solo artist with a number one hit in the UK, the first self produced female artist with 100 % creative control. The first perforner to pioneer the headset microphone in 1979, one of the first recording artists to work with digital sampling technology. Seversl decades of artists owe so much to her. She is also the ONLY woman who delved into progressive rock. Check out her seven part epic masterpiece, The Ninth Wave.

Kate Bush has always been treasured in the UK, she is a true artist and after her early success she got control over every aspect of her career. This song and album was when she first had her own studio. She could record and release things when she was ready, record companies no longer called any of the shots, and they, and her loyal fans, learnt to be patient, knowing when she did release new material it would be worth waiting for and not be compromised in any way. She was never interested in being a celebrity, and hated talking about herself or her music, wanting it to speak for itself. She never showed any desire to 'conquer' the States, and only ever did one tour and that was in the UK and Europe only. After having hit singles in the late 70's and into the 80's, and very creative promo videos, her later career has concentrated on albums, which have had large gaps between releases while she got on with her very private family life. She did do 22 dates in 2014, as a residency at the Hammersmith Apollo theatre in London, which was eagerly anticipated and over subscribed. It was released as a live album but not on DVD. Her audience were requested not to video it on their phones but experience it in the moment without distraction, and the vast majority amazingly did as they were asked.

    Kate Bush broke 3 records
    1. Longest time it took to reach number 1 37 years
    2. Longest time between number 1's, the previous was Wuthering Heights in 1978, so 44 years
    3. Oldest female to have a number 1, 63.
Kate is a musical genius. She recorded her first album at age 16 but the record company held it back for 2 years. It included a song called "the man with the child in his eyes" which was recorded when she was 15 and she wrote when she was 12.

Glyn Gasson That wasn't the album. It was a three track demo that secured her recording contract at 16. She didn't start recording the rest of the album until 1977 when she was 18-19 years old.

    • @gbulmer
      @gbulmer 2 года назад +1

Glyn Gasson, @Warren Bridges version sounds like the old Kate Bush documentary I remember. David Gilmour helped KB make the demo tape, and took it to his record company, to persuade them to sign her.
IIRC, the record company did hold the album back _a little_ because KB wanted 'Wuthering Heights' as the first single, but they wanted something else. IIRC David Gilmour helped persuade the record company to go with KB's choice, and hence it was 'Wuthering Heights' first.
KB is talented enough as it is.

About the meaning of the song then Kate Bush explained in 1985:
"It's about a relationship between a man and a woman. They love each other very much, and the power of the relationship is something that gets in the way. It creates insecurities.
"It's saying if the man could be the woman and the woman the man, if they could make a deal with God, to change places, that they'd understand what it's like to be the other person and perhaps it would clear up misunderstandings. You know, all the little problems; there would be no problem."
Kate also spoke about the song has been misinterpreted, saying: "I was trying to say that, really, a man and a woman can't understand each other because we are a man and a woman. And if we could actually swap each other's roles, if we could actually be in each other's place for a while, I think we'd both be very surprised!
"And I think it would lead to a greater understanding. And really the only way I could think it could be done was either... you know, I thought a deal with the devil, you know. And I thought, 'well, no, why not a deal with God!' You know, because in a way it's so much more powerful the whole idea of asking God to make a deal with you.
"You see, for me it is still called 'Deal With God'. that was its title. But we were told that if we kept this title that it would not be played in any of the religious countries, Italy wouldn't play it, France wouldn't play it, and Australia wouldn't play it! Ireland wouldn't play it, and that generally we might get it blacked purely because it had God in the title."

This song holds a special place in my heart. In high school in 1985, I used to ride to school with my neighbor friend Kurt. He was small in stature but big in personality. He would drive a giant boat of a car purchased by his father for the three boys. Kurt would drive with a cup of coffee in one hand and a cigarette in the other, with this song playing on the cassette player. I think of him often, but especially whenever I hear this song. RIP Kurt.

Well done gentlemen. I really enjoyed your enthusiastic and open minded reaction. I was about your age when this song first came out and I had been a Kate Bush fanatic since the first time I heard her in 1978. I am sure she is delighted to be reaching a new audience, but she has never been bothered about commercial success. This is one of her most commercial and accessible songs. Most of her work is deliberately artistic and esoteric. She often dances to her music in her videos. Another song that you may already know is This Woman’s Work, which was covered almost note for note by someone called Maxwell. My favourite video by her is a later remake of an earlier song by her called And Dream Of Sheep, from the same 1985 album that features Running Up That Hill. She re-recorded And Dream Of Sheep in 2014, and spent a day in a water tank for the accompanying video. She was close to hypothermia by the end and the result is astonishing. I have never seen a reaction to that video.

Great reaction guys, some other suggested Kate Bush songs from the 1980s, well first off I don't think you can go wrong with the other singles releases from her Iconic "Hounds Of Love" album: Cloudbusting, Hounds Of Love and The Big Sky.
I would also suggest Kate's duet with Peter Gabriel on his song "Don't Give Up", if you get a chance watch the official music video, it's very simple but so perfect for the subject matter of the song.
Then from Kate's next studio album "The Sensual World" I would suggest: This Woman's Work, Love And Anger and The Sensual World.
Just to give a quick background WRT Kate Bush - she started writing songs about 11, adding more complex lyrics at 13 - by her mid-teens she had well over 100 songs (some reports say nearer 200), a friend of the family passed on a tape containing 50 demo recordings to his friend David Gilmour (Pink Floyd), who convinced of her raw teeth. So he booked studio time to enable Kate professional recordings of 3 songs, when Pink Floyd were working on their new album an EMI executive asked him about any new talents and he handed over the tape with the professional recordings, EMI wanted to sign Kate immediately, but she was still quite young, Kate signed for EMI when she was 16.
Her debut single "Wuthering Heights" was released in 1978 and was a massive hit in the UK and many other countries, Kate sings with a very high register which was unlike anything else in the charts, but it fit in perfectly for the subject matter of the song and who she was portraying. I think that version 1 of the music video is a closer fit to the meaning of the lyrics, Kate's vocals were recorded as a single take with no edits. Kate became the first female to reach number 1 with a self written song, the 1st of numerous records/milestones she has set in conjunction with her UK single and album chart performance. NOTE: early Kate songs are sung with a higher voice, which makes sense since voice hadn't yet matured.
Kate has had 25 Top 40 UK singles. When RUTH initially charted at number 8 in the UK chart, a few weeks ago, Kate became the 1st female artist to have (at least one) top 12 hit single in the UK chart for six consecutive decades: 1970s, 1980s, 1990s, 2000s, 2010s and 2020s. Kate is multi-talented a singer/songwriter, musician, dancer, record producer, video producer and director.
She's considered to be a national treasure in the UK and elsewhere a musical icon and pioneer who has inspired/influenced countless artists/musicians who have followed her.
The word genius is overused but it matches Kate perfectly.

Kate bush is a one off genius that changed the music industry for women the world over inspired artists like Elton john to forget his suicidal tendencies, has performed with David Gilmore and peter Gabriel she wrote most of her music before she was 17 on an old organ in her fathers barn and still at school, the maturity of her song writing at that age defies logic, every thing she writes makes you think about life living and death, her first hit wuthering Hight's hit the UK charts at number one and stayed there for several weeks, shocking the whole industry to its roots, it took years of arguing with record Company's to get it released they thought it was not viable or to different for a single release but with the help of David Gilmore from pink Floyd they gave in, the industry was never the same for women after that she done things her way a pure artist, she never stopped singing she had a break for 12 years to go and be a mum and raise a family, had a come back of several concerts that sold out in seconds, and the number a deal with god placebo had a hit with a cover version i scratch my head at time over the US music industry it has its own inward outlook and misses out on a so much amazing music from around world, two quote a sinatra song kate did it her way and no one elses

I am truly happy that Kate FINALLY got her success in the states now. She is one of the greatest artists of all time, she just never made it in the US and I'm still quite shocked that so many people to this day hear her for the first time in their lives, but hey, better late than never. Truly not only one of the greatest UK artists from the late 70s and 80s, but also one of the most influential female performers and songwriters. She got nominated three times for the rock and roll hall of fame, hopefully she'll finally get in now next time she will be one of the nominees, it's due time. Artists like Tori Amos, Bat for Lashes, FKA Twigs, Lorde, Joanna Newsom, St. Vincent and others were clearly influenced by her. I cannot praise her enough. She's a living legend for sure and finally you Americans seem to understand it now.

Musician, songwriter, dancer,choreography.....her talents are far reaching......such as shame it took "Stranger Things" to bring her finally the adulation she deserves. It seems the USA were the last to really get into her!!! Hey please check out " The Man with a Child in his Eyes"....she was 13 years old when she wrote it......a modern day genius.

My favorite artist of all time with so many masterpieces including this incredible song, which is expressing that if a man and a woman could temporarily switch places they would be able to understand each other better. All her songs are very deep and meaningful and always have been since the beginning of her career when she was a prodigy discovered by Dave Gilmour of Pink Floyd. Kate Bush’s dance style would be described as modern, interpretive and mime, and like David Bowie, she was trained and inspired by the avant-garde choreographer and instructor Lindsay Kemp. By the way, her debut single, “Wuthering Heights”, is the first self-written song by a woman to ever hit number 1 on the UK 🇬🇧 charts and was one of 2Pac’s favorite songs. “This Woman’s Work” is one of her best, so check that out. Check out Maxwell’s beautiful cover, too. She is Big Boi’s (OutKast) idol and he wants to collaborate with her. “Running Up That Hill” is one of his favorites. In my opinion Kate is the most talented, most versatile, most creative, most innovative, most unique artist ever. She is one of a kind and in a league of her own. Thanks so much for reacting to her! Y’all rock!

Nice reaction. One of the greatest living female artists. Original, unique, ahead of her time, prolific songwriter from her early teens, pianist, producer, video director, and a trained dancer and mime (see the official music video to Running Up That Hill). Most often associated with the art pop/art rock/prog rock genres (often described as the female Peter Gabriel/David Bowie), much of her work was experimental and quite out there. She didn’t often do mainstream; ‘Running Up That Hill’ is one of her more instantly accessible songs. Other ‘near mainstream’ songs have been mentioned in other comments. Huge globally but didn’t do so well in the States. Mainly because she didn’t tour or do more than the minimum amount of album promotion, her music didn’t easily fit into the American radio structure of the time, and because her American record label delayed release of her early albums after she refused to go on tour with Fleetwood Mac as the backing act following the success of her debut album (brought out as a 19 year old in 1978). Even then, she still had a strong cult following in America. Glad the younger generation are now getting to know her music. Hopefully she will be nominated again next year for induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and this time get in.

I was quite young when I first saw/heard Kate Bush.
It was a DVD compilation of 80's music videos
The song was "Cloudbusting" (1985) off her "Hounds of Love" album (same one that has "Running up that Hill (A Deal with God" on it). From then on became one of my favorite artists.
Kate is definitely in a league of her own who inspired many artists who came after her (Tori Amos, Bjork, Lorde to name a few).
Kate is every bit of a theatrical/visual performer/storyteller as she is a musical genius/writer/artist and her extensive/legendary discography proves it.
Check out Kate's song/music video "This Woman's Work" (1989) about the uncertainty of childbirth through the eyes of the man. The R & B artist Maxwell famously covered it in the late-1990s

Not a huge fan of Stranger Things to be honest but it has a great soundtrack. The Clash is in there which is great but the greatest for me was Peter Gabriel singing David Bowie's Heroes, beautiful, loved it.

Kate Bush is a very unique and important artist! She was discovered by David Gilmour of Pink Floyd and he started her out when she was only 16 doing demos and getting her in the industry. By 1978, she recorded and released her first single Wuthering Heights when she was only 17 and that not only reached number 1, but it was the first UK single to be written by a female performing artist to reach number 1 on the Singles Charts! This would be her only number 1 in the UK until 2022 when Running Up That Hill, which was released in 1985, finally reached number 1 after its use in Stranger Things, as you guys have heard, making this also the longest period between number 1 placements for an artist in the UK as well! Kate Bush never stopped making music, but she did stop performing for decades, with the acception of a few shows and specials, and she rarely did interviews after the 80s. She's very much a dark horse nowadays with a lot of mystery surrounding her current whereabouts.
I'd HIGHLY recommend Wuthering Heights and Babooshka for some future reactions! Definitely two of her best from her earlier years! Prepare for some very unique vocals as well! Reminder that she was roughly 18-20 at the time of these songs!

In the U.K, throughout Europe, Australia, and Japan, Kate is an icon (and hopefully now in America!) She is a true original, there's just no one like her - a musical genius. By the time Pink Floyd guitarist David Gilmour discovered her at the age of 15, she had already written over 250 songs. A brilliant and innovative composer, lyricist, singer (with a 4-octave voice), pianist, dancer, mime, choreographer, record producer, video producer & director - she even helped develop the first cordless headset microphone that she used on tour. Hugely influential and highly respected by musicians worldwide, Kate was one of the first female musicians to take total production and artistic control over her work. She’s been a real pioneer for women in the music industry for the last 40 years. First woman to have a #1 self-written song in the UK charts. First woman to have an album debut at #1. First woman to have a Top 10 album in each of the last four decades. She has had 25 Top 40 singles, 10 albums on the Top 10 Albums Charts, nominated 13 times for British Phonographic Industry awards and 3 Grammy awards, an Ivor Novella Award for Outstanding Contribution to British Music, and appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 2013 for her honored services to music. In September of 2020 Kate was honored as a fellow of the prestigious Ivors Academy for songwriters and composers. In 2014 she returned to the stage and sold out over 100,000 tickets in less than 15 minutes (a record for the Hammersmith Apollo). Her 22 performances were highly acclaimed (named as "the #1 live music event of the year" by many music publications) and she became the first woman to have 8 albums in the top 40 charts at the same time (third behind only Elvis and The Beatles).
