I have the Nikon model of the Tamron 70-200 G2. Just magic. I point it at even dumb subjects, like shrubbery, and flowers, and the bokeh looks like paint. Granted, my last lens in this range was the venerable and amazing nikkor 80-200 2.8 'two-touch'. That's a lot to live up to, but the G2 does it. Recently I shot portraits of a musical performer after his concert using the G2 and some strobes. It's very satisfying when someone says, "That's the best photo anyone has ever taken of me." That final result is what makes the G2 a winner as part of my workflow.
I think this is the first video I have seen that broke down the chart in the 3 VC modes and difference between full and infinite. Nearly 1yr in owning this incredible lens. Thank you very much for this.
Nice viedo. But I guess what most people mean when they talk about 'focus breahting' is something different. They relate to still shooting and the effect that at close distances the focal range is not what the lens says it is. For instance: If you shoot a subject at 0,95m or 1,5m distance at a focal length of 200 mm and compare the angle of view and magnification to a 200mm prime shot, you will see, that the tamron's focal range seems to be significantly less than 200mm. This issue has been widley discussed in forums and other youtube channels and honestly it isn't an issue for me.
Thats exactly what I was thinking. Compared to the Nikon 70-200 mk3 there a 50mm difference at the long end. The Tamron being more like a 150 mm. Not a big deal though as I dont think anyone is going to buy this lens and shoot it at 200mm that close.
just talked to my photopusher to order one for me for middle of december as an early xmas and birthday present to myself!I gave the sigma version to my kid bro after using it for 2 weeks in february!damn slow and noisy!
What I do not have (and can not afford) is a long range fast lens which will allow me to shoot speakers at conferences, dancers, athletes or footballers ... in evening events outside or inside... stadiums, sports halls. I have a D500 and already have my 70-300 for daylight sports events or my 180mm for other things. So, is this good for low light at 200mm.
Educational video!! Thanks for sharing. I want to buy a 70-200 lens, have nikon Z5. I found a Tamron SP 70-200mm f/2.8 Di VC USD but I don't know if it is good enough, I have no idea about what that model means. Should I buy it? It's second hand, used like 5 times, looks like new. Any suggestions??? Should I save more money and buy another model? I love your content! Hugs from Norway ❤❤❤
I have a Tamron 70-200 G2 (for Nikon) on the way and I have been looking at quite a few reviews on the lens. Your review was particularly good. Concise and informative, I learned some extra things on the three-mode VC control, you pegged it. Nice use of the graphics at the right places also. I subscribed.
Share your knowledge on lens calibration, i.e. did the Tamron need anything for calibration out of the box? And your experience on the Tap-In Console.....thanks.
loss of sharpness at 200mm is what made me go for the nikon one. At 200mm 2.8 dx mode with the d750 ... the image is better resolved than with the tamron at 200mm f2.8 full frame... just to put things in perspective.
Hey JP...met you at wppi in Vegas...you let me try that lens on my D500...I've since then ordered mine...loved it then and still love it now...been my #1 money maker...you're as cool in person as you are on your videos...if you go next year drinks are on me at the Pioneer Saloon!
Here is information from Tamron: "Three separate VC modes are also available to suit various styles of shooting: Mode 1 is a balanced setting for general use, and promotes both a stabilized viewfinder image and stabilized results; Mode 2 is designed exclusively for panning movements; and Mode 3 is optimized to stabilize only during capture without stabilizing the viewfinder image."
Was waiting for someone to comment. It's a criminal offence to not use a lens hood on youtube! I sometimes don't use them when I'm being lazy or trying to save space/girth in my camera bag.
VC1 is the basic mode that gives you a balance between the image stability and compensation effects. VC3 prioritizes the compensation effects, but only at the moment you release the shutter. Check out the manual for more specific info about the lens, www.tamron.com/support/instruction.html
New definition of focus breathing for me... always thought(in short): question is if lens is at 200mm and close focus situation (e.g. headshot) if you actually get 200mm or something less....
Looking at buying the A001E, EF mount, Tamron 70-200 2.8. I think its the 1st generation? Does anyone know where to find more info on it? Ive been looking. Im a beginner and I only have Canon kit lenses, so I know the newer Tamrons are better but I can get this lens at a great price for now. Any thoughts on that earlier model?
As an entry level lens you will love it. If you can get a good deal I wouldn't hesitate. The newer lenses have faster autofocus. But it will be sharp and serve you well.
JP, I wish I could understand what your complaint was; all I understood was something "Nikon" something "Canon. I wish they had changed that...." You speak too fast sometimes!
Sorry! It's just that you turn the focus rings for Canon and Nikon in different directions. I'm used to Canon, and this one focuses like a Nikon. They changed their other new lenses but not this one, so I was disappointed by that.
Great video! Is it okay to pair this with a Crop sensor Body? I've read that a designed full frame lens will perform differently with a Crop sensor such as having not a true f2.8 opening but an f4 to APS-C and 112mm-320mm focal length? the focal length doesn't bother me but the aperture :( thank you very much for your time :)
if it has an arca swiss plate built in, it won't connect to the vanguard tripod ballhead which has a Vanguard proprietary plate. That's the only thing I don't like about my vanguard tripod.
Err no it still has the capability to have a foreign plate attached the screw hole is still there. I was thinking the same thing since I have manfrotto tripods and their plates are proprietary also. But no you just attach the plate you have to the collar like in the old days.
"So for a crop sensor camera would this lens perform as good?" Yes. "I keep hearing it's actually like f4 on crop sensor?" If you are talking about exposure, no. However, to have the same exact frame on a crop sensor, you will need to get more camera to subject distance, which increases depth of field. This essentially changes the rendering of the image, making it look like the lens was stopped down a bit(something that impacts depth of field in a similar fashion). Rendering will be similar to a f4 lens on a full frame, hence the f4 reference.
I've entered the contest, but winning a Tamron lens is the only way I'll ever get another one. I have a Tamron 18-270 that's been sent back, under "warranty", three times (and waiting to be sent back a fourth) to have internal dust removed from it. By the time I'm done with it I'll have spent as much on postage, out and back, as I paid for the lens. I'm not impressed with Tamron at all.
Hello, great vid....I couldn’t understand what meant when you said it focuses like nikon and not canon? I have always used canon so I couldn’t figure out what that meant. Thanks
sadly it has the same issue as the previous one where it's not a real 200mm at normal portrait distance. Saying that it does not affect stills is very silly.I am paying for a 200mm for the reach and compression not a 180mm or wherever it is.
The Nikon 70-200 f/2.8 VR II focus breathes as well, so if you are a perfectionist, you had better pony up the $2800 USD for the newest Nikon 70-200, because that is about the only 70-200 made in the last 8 years that doesn't focus breathe, unless Sigma lenses don't suffer from it. As a new owner of the Tamron G2, I will say that, when shooting this lens it only focus breathes at short distances, but the optical quality is fantastic for a lens that is almost $2000 cheaper than the most expensive 70-200. So if you need a 70-200, don't count this one out just because it breathes at close range. Your clients / customers do not care if your lens breathes. In fact, lens have been focus breathing for years and nobody even cared. Now suddenly it's a thing and people are turning their noses up at great pieces of glass just because they aren't 100% perfection.
It's time Canon fires Ms. Takahashi (the lady who cleans the restrooms at Canon headquarters and moonlights as the Canon Director of Research and Development). It's little things that bug me about Canon like the Arca Swiss grooves that this Tamron lens has and the Canon telephoto mounts do not!
The Slanted Lens I had mine 3 weeks and there’s times it will not lock focus on anything. I have to turn my camera off and then back on and it will work for a little bit again after and then start doing the same thing. It’s mounted to eos r. Not sure what’s going on
wandererstraining thank you so much for your message. As it really difficult to find someone how use this combo. Can you tell me if focusing speed is good enough for sport and wedding photography? Really appreciate if you can make a video of the af capability. Thanks again.
Ulrick Teissier I'd like to make a video, but right now I'm super busy. For wedding photography, I think it's most definitely fast enough. And I don't know if it counts as sports, but I used it on circus photoshoots where people were moving across the floor decently fast and also on people doing swinging trapeze, and it worked really well.
Ulrick Teissier No problem! To make sure it fits your needs, my suggestion would be to buy one from a store that accepts returns. Most likely will do the job (as much as the A7R II can be used for sports), but just in case. It's really worth a try tho, I absolutely love it and all reviews were good.
You’re incorrect on your idea of what focus breathing is. When you focus on a subject close to you, you lose focal length and instead of the lens being a 70-200mm it’s actually more like a 70-132. With this lens though you can focus much closer and you’re able to make the lens look like a 200mm shot.

Nikon & Tamron put infinity focus on the left, Canon & Sigma place infinity on the right.

probably more expensive than canon L glasses
