The greatest Giant to ever play the game is gone and while he was the greatest player to ever put on a pair of baseball cleats he was an even better human being and because of that alone the world is a little less bright Say Hey Willie
Am gutted. I remember as a little kid reading a book about him and it made me fall in love with baseball even more. I wonder how many people got into baseball because of Willie Mayes? More than I can imagine. I’m glad San Francisco had the vision to honor him while he was alive.
My oldest brother checked out a book about Willie Mays when he was a kid and never returned it. Not long ago I found that book and when he came back for a visit from Pennsylvania I gave it back to him along with a Willie Mays baseball card that I purchased. I knew it was his favorite player. Luckily that library doesn't exist anymore 😁. But sadly my oldest brother died a couple of years after. I have to figure everything went to one of his children
Crushing. My dad took me and my brothers to Candlestick Park to see Mays and his partner in RF Bobby Bonds (Barry's father) play. Greatest baseball player of all time, and Barry's godfather.
One of the very few good things about being 65 years old was watching and vividly remembering Willie Mays in a San Francisco Giants uniform. This is a tough one Damon.
As selfishly I want him alive, I know the legend is now resting in peace 🙏 Both our Willie’s now in heaven playing some catch. Descansa en paz don Willie Mays #24
I grew up in Scottsdale Az and when the Giants took over Memorial from the Cubs, Willie was at the end of his career. He was allways low key, quite, so you had to approach him, when you did shaking his hand left you in awe of the man, big soft hands like a mule skinner, the most well rounded ball player ever.
Sad day hearing the passing of the Great Willie Mays. Watched him play and tutor Bobby Bonds in the outfield. So hurt to hear his passing. I named my fantasy baseball team “Say Hey”. Will miss you Willie. 24 Forever!
Which part of his New York days were you considering: with the Mets in the 70s or New York Giants in the 50s? He played in San Francisco from 1958 until May, 1972.
My friend and I Knocked on his door when I was 13. He opened it shook my hand and gave me his autograph. Who does that today? My childhood hood hero. So lucky I got to see him play
I’m old enough to be blessed to remember seeing him play.
Yes, me too 😀
Me, too. He hit a homer off of Claude Osteen of the LA Dodgers at Dodger Stadium. Baseball's GOAT.
93 years old... a good life for a good human being. Rest in Peace "Say Hey Kid"
