Turn your HC-05 into a HID Bluetooth device (No Parallel Port Method)

  • Flash HID firmware on to a $3 Bluetooth devices so you make it act like a Bluetooth keyboard/mouse or game pad! You can use either a HC-06 or HC-05 for this
    Unlike other methods for doing this, this method does involve a parallel port so it should work on most computers.
    NOTE: Please read pinned comment, there is certain styles of board this won't work on

    If your watching this 2022, I would recommend skipping this and just using an esp32 instead, it's cheaper and easier than this method
    I have a video explaining how to use it as a hid device here:

      Thank you for the update, I had come to the same conclusion. I want to make an optionally wireless keyboard so I want USB HID and Bluetooth HID. I started with trying to figure out how to take an Arduino Pro Micro (which takes care of the USB-HID part) and add Bluetooth HID to it with a flashed (HC-05 or HC-06) or how to take an ESP32 and add USB-HID to it.
      Took me a while to come to the conclusion why not use both although it feels a bit odd to use the pretty powerful and capable ESP32 to basically just to do bluetooth.

      Hello, I’m trying to map a couple of bluetooth macro keys and I’m worried about the power consumption of the ESP32 I’m currently using for it (as I want it to run on battery). I believe that the ESP32 is way too powerful for this project and I would like to reduce everything to an ATTINY85 to make it as much cost and power efficient as possible. But I’m not really sure if the bluetooth module and the ATTINY85 together are going to be more power efficient than just using an ESP32, what do you think?

    If you have an ESP32, you don't need to go through any of these hassles. It has a built-in Bluetooth module and just needs short Arduino sketch to turn it into a Bluetooth keyboard: gist.github.com/manuelbl/66f059effc8a7be148adb1f104666467. At $5 the ESP32 is even cheaper than the HC-05/FTDI combo.

      Can you attach a usb keyboard to the ESP32 and have it behave as a bluetooth one? I've seen people use a few buttons but not a USB keyboard. If such a thing could be done it would be very popular! Many people would like to convert their favorite mechanical k/b to bluetooth or wireless HID.

    I have rebuild it using two HC-05 modules twice, inluding the wiring, won't work. I always get "XAP or SPI error", the HC-50 is flashing red permanently. Checked all the wires about 200 Ohms as supposed, and there's no short and no pin-swap. The FT232RL is workign as serial port at least, I have verified by shorting TX and RX to a loop. :(

    okay so i have a question...
    can we reprogram the HC-05 with an Arduino uno/nano
    cos to my understanding the purpose of using the ftdi breakout board is to interface the HC-05 to a pc...
    and a nano/uno has ftdi usb interfacing capability...
    and we can actually install the bootloader on another nano/uno with one (i've done this previously after somehow deleting the bootloader)
    so if this is a feasible method then it'll save a a lot of effort cos i already have multiple uno nanos and hc-05s...but no breakout-board....

      For the first part, you may need to send a blank key press (send 0) afterwards to let it know you've "released" the key
      Second part, make sure in the Arduino IDE serial monitor that it's set to "no line ending"
      I recommend using this library, it has lots of helper functions etc github.com/witnessmenow/BPLib/blob/master/src/BPLib.cpp

    What I was thinking with HC05 is: HC05 has a lot of PIO.
    So if I connect a button at HC05 master and one LED at another HC05 slave.
    and when I press button at master, the LED glow at slave.
    How Can we do that. Programming HC05 as per requirement.
    What you did is a firmware transfer but how to write an application on HC05.
    If we can do that then there is no need for arduino in bluetooth applications and making the use of arm processor on HC05.
    Can you please share a video on that too.

    Thanks for the video! I have followed your instructions successfully so many times! However I need some help from anyone that can assist. One of the connections broke loose while dumping the firmware of a module mounted on a ZS-040 breakout board. Now the thing is that I didn't realize until it was too late. Could anyone please offer an HC-05 dump from that breakout board? Now I know, revisions might be different and all, but I'd like to save the module if possible. Contacting the seller would be out of the question as I had bought it a few years ago. I'd appreciate any piece of advice. On that note, I've got a couple of modules (from a different batch) that don't want to get into at mode. Whatever I do, they just boot normally. Any thoughts on how I can solve that issue?

    Well, someone commented on my video about programming STM32 in Kei - "it is so complicated". What they will say for this video? :D Okay, I am using direct addressing programming, maybe that part looks complicated, but it is not that bad. Once used to do direct addressing, then I can switch to other compilers as is Atollic TrueStudio and others. Else, there is specific thing on each compiler, and I want to avoid that. Thank you again for very informative videos.

    Does anybody have the Bluesuite software? I tried registering on the CSR website with a gmail account like on the video but it will not accept my email. If you could send me a Google Drive, Dropbox, etc... link I would greatly appreciate it.

    I guess this method should work using an Arduino UNO as FTDI programmer, right? (in a similar way we do it to flash an ESP-01)

      I'm not sure Pedro, I think it will require the ftdi because of the custom driver

    Can I use a USB to UART cable to interface with the HC-05 module (not flashing the firmware) with one like this (www.adafruit.com/product/954)?

      That page is 404ing for me for some reason. Once it's flashed you can interface with it from any serial device, including a PC if you wanted

    Hi! Nice work! I was wondering if the RI pin is necessary for it to work. I am currently trying to implement it using the CY7C65211 USB-Serial Bridge instead of the FTDI Board and apparently it doesn't have the Ring Indicator pin like the FTDI does. It would be great if you happened to know something that could help me. Thanks!

    I'm having an issue and am wondering if it has to do with my FTDI Programmer. When I launch blueflash I see the FTDI as "FT242R 00000000". Is the 8 zero's normal?

      I guess that's the serial #. From what I've been reading that's a good indication that it's no a genuine FTDI Chip. Will these chips still work for this?

    are those settings ($$$; SF,1; S~,6;....) stored in non volatile memory, so even after hard reset it will work as HID with set name and other settings? I want to make sure that, I will have to set those settings just once, and will not need any other init routine every time. Thank you, great video btw.

    • @BrianLough
      @BrianLough  6 лет назад +1

      +Viktor Vano yeah they only need to be done once and then they persist
      Thanks a lot, really appreciate it!
      I have been working on a library to make using the flashed device easier, someone already one but it was specific to a certain board, might be worth checking out.

    Hello Brian, could you please clarify whether this method can be used to create a bluetooth device for a laptop (a wireless keyboard) meaning that arduino and all the wireless modules will be inside the device and it connects to the laptop wirelessly? For now, I've only found a tutorial that describes how to create a wire "keyboard" (ruclips.net/video/1unTKKGd8qs/видео.html) but I'm looking for a way to connect a device wirelessly. Any ideas?

    • @TexasSting007
      @TexasSting007 6 лет назад

      Jackob Litvin, yes it can be used with an arduino but be sure to used a logic level shifter as the arduino is 5v and these bluetooth devices are 3.3v. Other wise you could damage the bt device.

    • @robatoto
      @robatoto 5 лет назад

      Gajendra Suthar No. The ESP8266 has a USB chip that only supports serial communication. It can‘t do HID (USB term for keyboard, mouse etc.). Other microcontrollers are more versatile with regards to USB: Arduino Leonardo, ST32F103 (aka blue pill), Teensy LC and 3.x. They can all simulate a keyboard and mouse.
