Granted, those missiles would do nothing against the shields of Star Wars capital ships-- do remember that even the "small" proton torpedoes launched by an X-wing ARE proton weapons. Aka miniature nuclear missiles. Similarly while the EDF fleet would be able to bombard the First Order fleet from a fairly long distance with their Wave Motion Guns, the ships themselves would be glass cannons in the face of Star Wars' sheer firepower.

I love this story, but will always wonder why Kodai needs a two handed grip on a firing device that's fixed to his console, or even why that kind of targeting system is even close to efficient. Plot strikes again I guess.
Well, having that kind of trigger is probably a good call back to the original Yamato shows. As for teh two handed grip, I wondered the same thing, but as a military person, it just might be old habits.
Same as why modern fighter pilots sometimes hold the stick with both hands even when its suposed to be fly by wire and doesnt need force to operate it, they do it to make sure the stick is moved to that position and stays there even if they dont need both hands but do it to feel its there fully.... the WMG is aimed with that pistol grip.. he probably wants to make sure he holds it really steady for the trigger pulling.. iirc when he fires it again later in the movie he uses one hand only ...

The Space Battleship Yamato movie shits rings around anything coming out of Hollywood. Mind you, the time it takes to prepare the wave motion gun is horrendously long.
And it is still very far from a good movie or a good adaptation if compared to the 2199 series; although granted it did come out 2 years before 2199, but even compared to the original series.
Transit WMG crippled a nearly indestructible Saturn-sized warship and vaporized several planets it was carrying without directly hitting them. A bit overkill.

I mean if u look at the Yamato compared to the Super Star Destroyer, it’s probably necessary to use the Transit WMG. The Yamato is like 300-340m while the First Order ships are literally over 2Km and 60km.
