What is a Devil's Garden and How is it formed?

  • In the Amazon rainforest, you can find a very strange phenomenon - a so-called Devils Garden. Areas of the forest that are dominated entirely by a single species of plant. In an environment with an unparalleled diversity of plants and animal species, these spots of regularity feel very out of place - almost mystical. Not surprising that locals think evil forest spirits cultivate these gardens. But in reality, there is a logical but very interesting explanation for them.

    Spoiler Alert:
    I recently deleted a few of my oldest videos, that I felt weren't that good anymore - the sleeper shark one and one about ants. They were from a time when I still learned how to animate and before I knew I want to turn this into a nature-science channel.
    This is the first of a series of replacement videos. I still have two more ant videos on my list, that will get made sometime in the future (probably next year) and a new sleeper shark video.
    Have a nice weekend you guys!

    the ants are cutting down and killing plants in order to make room for expansion and land? so they're basically like humans

    • @dynamicworlds1
      @dynamicworlds1 6 лет назад +349

      You'd be surprised how much ants are like humans sometimes. Most defenses across all insects are to try and fend of ants, and ants make up a surprisingly large amount of biomass.
      They conduct war, some clear forests, some domesticate other insects, some farm, etc.

      Milbox R insects/bugs indeed can't evolve in "full on" animals because they already are... ants dont need to change. they were here before the dinosaurs (in far more basic form) and will still be here faaaar long after we humans are dead. they have perfect societies where absolutely noone has to suffer from hunger etc. They are in a way superior to us... better infrastructure, coexistence with nature and as saied no one has to be hungry (if enough food is provided of cause)

    It makes sense that these areas would be considered ominous by human beings: They are dominated by the same species of plant which means that if you wander into them you lose sense of direction and location. Should panic grip you, you'll be more likely to hallucinate the indistinguishable columns as humanoids, and, being that you're lost, consider them malevolent forces.

      what started this mutualism? Evolution sometimes seems..."guided"

    • @trillionbones89
      @trillionbones89 6 лет назад +12

      Zef yes, by shared selective interests.
      imagine that cooperation on a smaller, less symbiotic level and it still benefits both parties.
      it's not even that uncommon in nature. leafcutter ants feed a fungus that is used for food.

    • @Rctdcttecededtef
      @Rctdcttecededtef 6 лет назад +1

      But why? Neither ants or fungus are able to communicate with each other so how did they realize it was mutually beneficial? What started it all? Maybe I'm just reaching, or maybe I dont really get it lol

    • @kuyaleinad4195
      @kuyaleinad4195 6 лет назад +19

      Zef The way Ants and the trees developed mutualism seems to be the same as Humans and Dogs I think.
      Humans Provided Food and Shelter to Dogs while Dogs provide humans with protection and kill anything posing a threat to humans. Of course humans and dogs can’t communicate as well so how did this develop? It’s known that dogs started getting close to human settlements due to human scraps of food. The settlements with more dogs had better chances of survival since dogs are predators and so settlements where dogs and humans were closer were more successful and survived and passed it onto their offspring. Thus mutualism evolved between species.
      It’s probably similar with ants and the trees. The ants got close to the trees as they happen to provide the right conditions for living. Ants are territorial like dogs and so they’d kill any insect that gets near the trees so basically more trees survived better so they spread. The ants spread with them. Thus mutualism evolved. What also happened was that ants that killed anything that poses a threat to the trees survived more as the trees had more success surviving :)

    I've never heard of a Devils Garden before honestly
    I thought it was going to be like the Devils Kitchen which is a part of Cwm Idwal in Wales
    Be interesting if you could do a video on how such geographical features formed and the legend behind the name
    Cwm Idwal is a mountain I've visited a few times because it's a pretty good textbook example of geographical formations with glaciation, so Ive taken multiple trips to it with school
    But I don't remember how exactly the devil's kitchen was formed
    It's a black cracked crevice in the mountain which steam can often be seen rising from
    It's not volcanic activity as the volcanoes in the UK are long, long dormant
    I think it is obvious as to why it'd get it's name, but there's a lot more lore behind it that I don't remember

      @chitinskin9860 6 лет назад +7

      No, the ants can only protect so much. Once it reaches standard size, the saplings on the edges start getting picked off by herbivores because the ants are to busy protecting fully grown trees.

    • @Merilirem
      @Merilirem 6 лет назад +3

      Basically it depends on the ants growing enough to protect the tree's. So unless thing change and they can expand drastically and indefinitely then it is unlikely such a thing would occur.

    Here in Brazil, this "Chuyachaki" is called "Curupira"(coo roo pee rah), you probably looked into the Castellano(spanish speaking) countries of Latin America for your research, also, about the formic acid, there is a plant called "urtiga"(oore tee gah) that produces formic acid on its leaves causing a stinging itch. Curupira hss it's feet turned backwards so that hunters could not track him down, mistaking him with another person's footsteps. He is usually depicted with a fiery hair and with his feet turned backwards.

      Increased herbivory, m. Schumanni ants do protect d. Hirsuta trees but, the gardens are so expansive that the ants are unable to ward off all herbivores.
      This is from a research article, “The devil to pay: a cost of mutualism with Myrmelachista schumanni ants in ‘devil’s gardens’ is increased herbivory on Duroia hirsuta trees” if you want to read it it’s pretty short and an easy read for a research article.
      I only looked this up as I had to give a presentation on something based on plant ecology and I found this channel when I was looking up interesting plants and the like.
      Hope this helped.

      "Japanophiles" are still pretty _pathetic._ *If you knew the true nature of the Japanese, not what they feign in front of Westerners, you cannot possibly remain fascinated with them.* Worshiping anything or any people as their fantasy versions and refusing to see all their aspects objectively, is hardly being different from insufferable anime nerds. How can you stay enamored over a vindictive people who unlike modern Mongols, venerate their warlike past of banditry, and see outspokenness even in the democratic 21st century as being ill-mannered or foolish? *A Feudalistic mindset for a people who still conform to the idea that the very concept of a class struggle is evil.*
      Any time you hear something good from any people, you have to keep in mind whenever something manages to get international recognition it's usually because they managed to be the cream of the crop in their country. Foreigners don't realize the other 90% is absolute crap and hence hardly gain international fame.
