    🤔 NEW HERE? 🤔
    Hi! My name is Christopher Odd and I’ve been playing video games on the internet for a few years. I really enjoy a variety of games but generally lean towards games with a unique and engaging story (Bioshock, The Witcher, Cyberpunk 2077, The Last of Us etc), strategy/roguelike games (XCOM 2 War of the Chosen, Darkest Dungeon, etc), and RPGs (Dark Souls, Elden Ring, Dragon Age, etc). Of course, I am always looking for great indie games too!

    Remembering back to the first episode Oppy says that the instability scrambles everything it comes in contact with and matter has lost the ability to maintain its physical properties, but it is never stated that such matter is destroyed. So I wonder if the people killed by the instability aren't actually dead. Maybe they continue to exist but not in a physical sense which is why Tobias and Allen were still able to communicate with the "living" during the gamma ray surge.

    And so the bonkening saga comes to a close, the same as the trunk does as it descends on Chris' head.
    At episode start:
    BONKs so far: 15
    Current Bonk-less streak: 28
    Best Bonk-less streak: 55
    Current successful trunk-closing rate: 222/237 (93.7%)
    1:35 - no incident (no incident since last bonk: 29) (223/238 success rate)
    2:37 - no incident (no incident since last bonk: 30) (224/239 success rate)
    3:56 - no incident (no incident since last bonk: 31) (225/240 success rate)
    5:38 - no incident (no incident since last bonk: 32) (226/241 success rate)
    14:20 - no incident (no incident since last bonk: 33) (227/242 success rate)
    15:34 - no incident (no incident since last bonk: 34) (228/243 success rate)
    17:33 - no incident (no incident since last bonk: 35) (229/244 success rate)
    And so ends the saga, the tale, the legend of the legendary driver Chris. With just 15 BONKs out of 244 possible times, it is pretty impressive, putting him at a neat 93.9% success rate. Thank you for reading these and see you in future series, this is your friendly records keeper Adam Bárta, signing off.

      @@thetoastmonster I just completed the game. Some of the quirks are very subtle, but I saw I few of the ones I also got during Chris' playthrough.
      - Radio volume fluctuates when wipers are turned on
      - Wipers get 'stuck' or stutter
      But some quirks are very annoying. Like when doors open when you put the car in park, or worse, when it is put into drive.

    @NEEDbacon 3 месяца назад +16

    58:50 Honestly the twist I was expecting was, the people you interact with, just aren't there. Long since perished. However they're stuck in a way over the radio, or perhaps the Station Wagon Remnant itself. And going by the ending with the well allowing you to "talk" with Tobias again, there may have been a plan for that being it.
    Given you're dealing with a lady in her admitted 80's somehow surviving in a secluded part of an absolute hellscape (by choice) and a pair of, at least middle aged men in a not so much hellscape (though weirdly being in the Midzone apparently never invite you over). Both of their survival seems pretty exceptional as I think it's been 10 years (The zone gets expunged from everyone in the 80's, game takes place in the 90s).
    But going by the ending where we deal with Tobias one more time, it's clear the zone isn't big on Mortality and can allow communications between folks who shouldn't be breathing. And given you're rolling around in a mutation that's supposed to influence your mind, to head to the well for it's own reasons basically. It using the voices from long dead folk (that may have even tried to escape in the wagon leading to it being a Remnant now) to convince you isn't the craziest thing. And you'd be hard pressed to say it even lies to you. It warns you, but due to whatever effects it has, you push on with it regardless. And Said Warnings can be considered to be in it's self intrest as you have a shared destination.
    It also lines up with the characters leaving. Tobias is brash, and perhaps as a spirit would be a bit too much for the Remnant Wagon to really handle, so comes up with an excuse to get rid of it. And once you reach the well, it still has a hold on you, but since it completed it's mission, doesn't really have a reason to really push you there any more. So "Oppy" choses to leave, leaving the meekest member Francis to act as a glorified guide in your extended stay in the Peninsula. Note how while They're all keen on getting you out of the zone, it really does boil down to getting the Remnant Wagon to the Well ; something the voices comment on as being the goal as the previous remnant owners. But well, a Station Wagon is a bit more useful then a teapot. But once you're "Free" of the Remnant, no one is really left to help you get OUT of this hell hole. And you're basically trapped, with a carrot on a stick wielder to convince you to "go back into the zone, for science" in Francis.

    • @NEEDbacon
      @NEEDbacon 3 месяца назад +5

      Since folks are talking about how a DLC or a Sequel might pan out, I figure may as well see how I'd want it to go down. After a few years being in the Peninsula (perhaps to your own confusion as there's not a REAL reason you're still there) helping "Francis" track down what the zone has to offer, a new voice appears. In the form of a ARDA task force meant to sweep the zone for any breechers. Perhaps aware of you specifically, or just doing a routine thing and finding you. (in terms of gameplay could offer new enemies who focus on exposing the wagon for what it is, a shitheap running on supernatural means)
      In a desperate fit to keep you "Francis" convinces you that ARDA will only, at best kill you, at worst experiment on you (perhaps in a not too subtle way to imply it's more talking about itself). Could even bring back Oppy or Tobias to try and convince you to head to the Well (to set off a Gama radiation blast that'd drive ARDA off). Before giving up the subterfuge and revealing it's nature as a parasitic supernatural entity which has found great success in the station wagon via you. Gathering more and more information to use in disguises to convince folks to go to the well (though it hasn't had much reason to go back to it after successfully returning). And it continues pushing you back to the well mainly out of self preservation (terrified of what ARDA would do to it). And there could be an alternative story line were you DO co-opperate with ARDA to get out of the penisula and away from the manipulative Wagon. Could tie in nicely as if doing what the Wagon wants will result in less quirks. Where going the ARDA route could make it VERY HOSTILE to you (Imagine your wheel jerking fully in a direction every time you hit top speed)

  • @aerumvorax
    @aerumvorax 3 месяца назад +7

    The reason to use different panels / doors than just radiation resistance ones lies in adjancency bonuses. Each part provides the bonuses to itself and its neighbours. I ended my run with Olympium, lead, insulated and corrosive resistant paneling giving me resistance to practically everything but not quite all around the vehicle.
    Tobias dying and Francis taking the lead leaves the aftergame with a bit bad aftertaste since Francis will keep constantly making references like "If Tobias was here to see this". I want to drive around a bit and take in the sights, have a good time. With Francis on the lead that becomes increasingly hard.

    When we got the message on the FAX machine a few episodes back where the message was like "I've been turned into pure data, don't delete any files on your computers whatever you do!" I thought that was setting something up for the plot, but then nothing came of it. Thought perhaps it was setting up for a reveal that Oppy, Tobias and Francis were no longer human, and were instructing you in hope of some kind of rescue from their digital existence. After all, how else could they have survived so long in the zone with no outside support?

    • @NEEDbacon
      @NEEDbacon 3 месяца назад +6

      TBH from the first moment I swear that was going to be the twist. That all those folks you talk to are trapped basically in the Remnant. Maybe on a last ditch effort out of the zone they all happened to get stuck in the Station Wagon. Or Deus Ex Machina for the radio. Either way, no one you'd ever meet. While Oppy mentions "I'm behind a literal cloud of instability, you ain't finding me", Tobias and Francis are mentioned to be in the Midzone. But they never mention WHERE. And for sure would be at least semi-accessable (as they have to do some scavanging of their own to survive).

    29:34 - You did one easy/straight-line drive for that middle highway junction and then loaded into the easy drive for the second highway junction (the one you selected from the map after leaving the garage), skipping the actual location/stop for the middle highway junction. It saves you some time, but in the case of those highway junction stops, also eliminates the chance of any Anchors - as Anchors do not spawn on the easy drives. So free mats and a bit faster of a ride to your end destination, or the free mats along with an actual map between to possible provide anchors at the cost of additional time in your run.

    Thank you a lot, Odd, for this series!!! To me, the whole story was really beatiful and sort of innovating or really ingenious. The way they have pretty much only four main characters to make the whole plot to develop and move forward, having as much weight and intensity as any other story. Even more than many others there are out there... Not to mention that three of those four characters are voices on a radio and the other one doesn't even talk, lol!!! To me, instead of that feeling like something that was lacking, felt much more like an achievement from a storytelling perspective. Also, the whole way that the character arcs were handle really got to me emotionally and that felt just super satisfactory. I simply can't believe how much I've enjoyed this series, so lots of thanks againg to you, Odd!! 😁

    Stephen King was once asked what kind of story "The Shining" was. He thought, and eventually called it hopeful. Because any story that implies some sort of life after death was inherently hopeful.
    I think that this game is too. It's bittersweet, but hopeful. Oppie finally accepts forgiveness from the ghost of her husband (ghosts you might see in that final run towards the portal). Francis has a new purpose - to continue to chase down the mysteries and stories of the zone.
    For those people who want a story that does its job, this is it. Forty hours of explanation, and a satisfying ending.
    Me? I'm only on part four of the frequency files. I've got a mere 38% of my logbook filled out. If Francis's is here to help me make further discoveries, I'm in for it. I'll keep driving until I have logged more anomalies (including that one in the very opening zone that's still eluding me). And Olympium doors and panels. I want to see how those look, blast it.
    Mr. Odd, thank you for sharing your route with us. I'm still a few junctions behind on the Pacific Pounder, as the Seattle Cutlass had to finish her journey first. But I'm catching up now. I promise.
    To you other drivers out there, whether you take an early off ramp or if you drive until your tank is empty, your battery oxidized, and the abductors are dragging you offroad (again), do me a favor? Log your travels for me. Because the best part is the journey, isn't it?
    Petal to the metal, folks!
    ...and what did Tobias mean... "Until next time"?

      Those who enjoy games with a longer playthrough can enjoy the replayability though. Trying out different builds and adding skills that they didn't use in the last playthrough could make it feel like playing a new game.
      So they could probably get at least double the playtime out of it before it feels repetitive.
      Completely agree with you about it being nice to see a game that doesn't get lost in side quests and such and instead stays focused on the story it is trying to tell.

    Totally agree with you that getting to meet/see the people you were in constant communication with during your journey would have been a great payoff.
    I think that the reason Tobias's death wasn't as impactful was because even though we got to know him through the radio at the end of the day he was just a voice without a face.
    Even getting to see them on a monitor at the game's conclusion would have been enough to just put a face on the people who were essentially your travel companions in the zone.
    Hopefully with updates and patches they'll work out the bugs that you experienced like not being able to collect fuel from the synthesizer and having to travel through junctions even after getting the upgrade ability to bypass them.
    Even with those flaws this looks like a solid game and it has been fun watching you play it.

    I spent like double the amount you did on grinding for resources. I wanted every upgrade. I like the sound design too. I also felt like the deep zone threats should have been more difficult and that it needed a fast travel to get to the zone you wanted to farm. It was interesting too that the vibe of the early zones is WAY more chill, which I did miss sometimes. I wouldn't have minded a chill stable deep zone run or two, instead of always barely managed chaos and a mad dash to get resources. Overall, a solid game and an excellent price point for what you get.

    If I had to describe this game, I'd say it's the setting of _Control_ combined with the gameplay of _Subnautica_ .
    I actually thought the car Remnant was going to be something akin Stephen King's _Christine_ when we started out, so I'm a bit disappointed the car didn't play a bigger role in that regard. But nevertheless, great series, great game. And it almost feels like they're leaving off to set it up for a sequel to continue the story - or to make you think and interpret the conclusions that are never really explicitly stated as conclusions, only as interpretations, hints or speculation.

    I could see the no teleport system being more bearable as actual downtime if the destination area or anomalies was more dangerous as mentioned, and also if the crafting/upgrading was less messy in the second half of the game. The gameplay loop would then be: Crafting( brief thinking/planning time) > downtime on the long roads > dangerous destination area. Subnautica also had various landmarks and interesting biome landscapes while traversing whereas most of this was dark and not a lot of change in the background, so unless you're someone who still plays Euro truck Sim to this day, I get why most people would like a fast travel system.

    It's a good game. I enjoyed watching and playing it. The thing that's bothering me the most the fact that I cannot save whenever I want, I stop often when I play and sometimes I can't afford keeping it running. Basically forced to continue or lose progress, I mean I get why but you know..
    2nd I fully agree with you on basically fast travel, especially when you reach "deep zone". Time is precious, time is money, simply put I don't wanna waste my time driving through no longer needed areas to my destination, just get me there.
    Lastly yeah detailing station need some work. Now that being said, I still think this a game that came out of nowhere and crushed many AAA titles at least to me.

      I don't think people are saying that fast travel should be able to be done freely out of the gate, but once they've passed through an area being forced to go through it again to get to destinations that are further away I get why they don't like that.

But to me and I can only speak for my self, I can't buy the gameplay side, I understand yes. Because in the end it's up to the player to play it as he see fit whether it's cheesy or not so long he enjoys it, options in my opinion always great. overall i agreed with you, wouldve been nice if you could change the location of your garage or something, some sort of autopilot wouldve been nice for on the roads so you could make repairs or fix it whilst climbing out, making it more dynamic. i felt like there were too many upgrades, which isnt something i would normally say, its just that the layout was confusing and you couldnt unlock everything, and there was so much to craft you forgot half of what you unlocked and i dont blame you for it, was a bit much.
    storywise, i expected some kind of twist at some point, hoped on some betrayal, or doublecrossing, but that didnt happen, wouldve loved to meet the characters, but im glad they stuck to only 3. i never really connected with the 3 characters tho. the ending was kind of an anticlimax imo, you were working on trying to get out of the peninsula, but you never did, I hoped/expected once you returned to the real world something dark happened, nuclear apocalypse or something dramatic explanation why all the stuff happened? maybe aliens? Overal 7.7/10 I loved watching it, but i wouldnt play it myself, I also find it hard to recommend to others, since its quite a niche youll either love it or hate type of game.

Did they do an Easter egg thing and you carry on with the new guy for more adventures? A sequel, I can't see how that could work... what would have been cool is starting as the doctor just before everything went to crap. Experiencing every thing, do a 10 years later thing and carry on. A telling commentary on the amount of radiation, just from consumer electronics.

    • @kaelananderson9237
      @kaelananderson9237 3 месяца назад +5

      Is it? Gamma rays, the type of radiation generally regarded as "harmful" due to its penetrative power, exist at frequencies around 300 ExaHertz - or 300,000,000,000,000,000,000 Hertz. Vague "consumer electronics" operate at frequencies in the 10 GigaHertz or less range... 10,000,000,000 Hertz and lower. This includes microwave ovens, cell phones, wireless routers, televisions, radios - basically any "consumer electronic". That's several orders of magnitude different - indeed, the two are on opposite sides of the visible light spectrum's wavelengths, and "consumer electronics" operate closer to sound waves in frequency than ionizing Gamma radiation.
      Do you think hearing someone speak, or hearing an instrument play - or seeing literally anything - is a radioactive danger?
      It's wise to be skeptical of potential dangers, but it's more wise to recognize the difference between fear mongering and genuine hazard.

      @@kaelananderson9237 Thank you for your analysis. I’m not going to pretend that I ran the numbers, or that I am qualified to speak to this area of study. I was merely trying to comment on the great tally of old TV sets, without spoiling. Question: would the amount of those TV sets raise risk to a human, or is the effect neither additive nor multiplicative?

    • @kaelananderson9237
      @kaelananderson9237 3 месяца назад +2

      @@yon_monsterNo worries. I just bristle at remarks like that because it's the kind of off-handed, unnuanced statement that some people will run with to form, at best, unhelpful and, at worst, dangerous "theories".
      To answer your question - perhaps marginally? There are two factors to consider regarding electromagnetic radiation: intensity and frequency. Differing intensities is why you shouldn't stick your head in a microwave oven but your cell phone doesn't cook your hand, even though they both operate at similar frequencies (around 2.4GHz) - the microwave oven's EM radiation is more intense and directional. The quantity of TVs would impact the intensity experienced, I believe additively, but this would only cause a heating effect, not damage at a cellular level, because the frequency wouldn't be changed. I also imagine this effect would be fairly marginal due to the inverse-square law - the intensity of an electromagnetic wave falls off very quickly because for every doubling of the distance from the source the intensity experienced is quartered (this is mathematically related to the square-cube law where if you make an object 2x bigger in length, its surface area becomes 4x bigger and its volume 8x).
      Frequency describes the rate at which the wave oscillates - 1 cycle per second is 1 Hertz - and has an inversely proportional relationship to the wavelength - the physical distance over which one cycle is completed - with higher frequencies having shorter wavelengths, and lower frequencies having longer wavelengths. Imagine a swinging pendulum: the pendulum will make more back-and-forth cycles in a shorter amount of time if it's travelling a short distance, but if you pull the pendulum really far back it will take longer to cycle. (As an interesting aside, this is why the metal grille on a microwave door keeps you from being cooked like your food. The holes are much smaller than the wavelength of the microwave radiation [around 12 centimeters] and so it doesn't "fit through", but visible light is higher frequency, shorter wavelength [400 to 700 nanometers] and passes through easily).
      Frequency also has a directly proportional relationship to the energy of the photons that compose the wave - so higher frequencies are more energetic. This is the energy of the photons themselves and is unrelated to the intensity of the wave. This energy is what makes the much higher frequency gamma rays dangerous - the photons have enough energy to rip electrons off of atoms (called ionization) and a narrow enough wavelength that they pass easily through most material. The frequency doesn't change with intensity, so even if you stack up a whole mess of TVs they won't suddenly start emitting dangerous ionizing radiation, just a greater quantity/intensity of the same (relatively) low-frequency waves that don't have the energy to disrupt the structure of atoms (just bounce into them, making them vibrate more, resulting in more heat).
      Hopefully this long-winded explanation helped! I'll admit I'm reaching the end of my knowledge and understanding of the concepts involved so I probably couldn't elaborate further, at least not in a meaningful way, if you still have questions. Thanks for not taking offense to my original reply and showing an interest in the science. :)

    • @yon_monster
      @yon_monster 2 месяца назад +1

      @@kaelananderson9237 TY for response 😊 the explanation helps a lot, where the intensity and frequency is what would cause cellular damage, and TV sets don’t emit bands until lower frequencies. And, although the effect might be additive with so many TVs, the intensity and frequency emitted would not be the type of cellular damage associated with apocalyptic radiation. Happy Sciencing 🧬

      The remnants kinda got explained as being triggers to "The Well" anomaly at the center that sets off massive Gama Radiation blasts when it comes into contact with said Remnant. The First was apparently a Tungsten cube. TBH I think it'd be interesting if the Remnant was a single entity and it keeps trying to fufill it's purpose of activating the Well (somehow). Thus why all previous Remnants made their owners go insane and disappear (presumably to the well). And while either failing to get it's owner there (a teapot that makes delicious tea isn't the best for traversing a hellscape) and eventually having to find a new target to occupy after it's clear it's current form can't satisfy it's need to return to the well, drifts to something else. And it just so happens to land in the Wagon we find. Clearly after everyone is long since gone.
      As for why Oppy can leave, tbh I think the Remnant may also be able to harbor spirits. And uses them to convince it's latest victim to it's will. It's one thing to have some eldritch entity tell you go to the center of Radioactive hell, and others providing a cast of "friends" to get it to where it ultimately wants, but at the hosts own will.
      Since the Remnant finished it's goal of reaching the well, it wouldn't have a need of Oppy or Tobias. But could spare Francis to keep you running around with it.
      Oh, and the reason Oppy can leave is she's a spirit and is basically passing on.

I always liked your meticulous checking of everything and now, "give me fast travel", you were no longer interested in new anomalies. Just finish it.
