You are incredibly well-spoken. You have this contagious, calming energy that I gravitate toward immensely. I also love the way you speak.. to explain, you exude patience by taking your time with each thought, word, and sentence that makes it all seem so eloquent and genuine as you go through each portion of your video. Your videos never seem rushed, and you are, overall, just a likable person with a very welcoming and sincere personality. I'm very glad your husband mentioned the idea of you starting a channel - happy to have you here! 💛 EDIT: My favorite genre is Thriller/Mystery. Although I am still diving into new authors, I feel like some of the authors I have grown to love are Frieda McFadden (although some of her novels are 3 🌟 to me), it is still a good intro to the genre with relatively good endings that make sense (for the most part). Riley Sager is another. I also love "The Silent Patient". On my Goodreads, you can see certain books I have read in the genre and maybe gather a bit from that. If youd like that link, let me know and I can give it to you! 😊
Oh I love these newbie questions so much more than the usual ones I have seen! So excited to have found your channel because I share so many of your sentiments about these titles! Though as a mama with teens, I tend to read lots of YA. We homeschool too, and my daughter absolutely loves Mara.
My wife Hannah and I love your vibe a lot. My wife found you back when you had 500 followers and said, “I really hope she does well on RUclips, she has your vibe if you made book-tube videos”. We are looking forward to seeing you and your husband’s review video when the time comes!
I want to make my own RUclips channel and style it similar to this channel. I absolutely love 💕 the way you talk about books. It’s the same way I would talk about any book I was reading with my boyfriend at the time. I really hope I get to make that dream come true and this comment encapsulates how much I enjoy watching your videos🥹💙
I found your channel a couple of days ago and I already have several of your recommendations on my wishlist for Christmas or downloaded on my Kindle. I loved when I got to the end of this video and you talked so fondly of Mara! I homeschool my son and we read that book as a read aloud at the beginning of September. We both really enjoyed it but I feel like I want your mom to read it to us! Thanks for all the great recs and videos!
Hi, Olive! I'm looking forward to hearing about all bookish things you want to share with us. From an oldie content creator to a newbie, welcome aboard. We're so glad to have you here!
Love your vibe (I drink TJs sparkling water over coffee too 💕) and I love how you are reviewing books I never hear about on BookTube! Also, just had to comment that I was also homeschooled and my mom was also a theater major and also read books aloud with fall accents and dramatic interpretation. 😂💕 It was the best thing ever and I just wish I had as much flare as she did for my own kids. Keep the videos coming! I’ll be watching! 😊
Ah thank you so much for watching and commenting! So cool to hear we had similar experiences when it comes to homeschooling and reading. I really love that. Also - my first thought with fall accents was definitely Dracula and maybe The Sanderson Sisters? 😂 A very funny thought
I was homeschooled as well, you reminiscing your days with your mom reading aloud brought back many memories of my mom doing the same. There were six of us kids, and she would make sure there were piles of laundry to fold. While we folded laundry, she would read. I kicked started my love of reading and being emersed in other worlds.
Hello Olive, welcome to booktube! This month is my fourth year on the platform. I’m happy you’re doing the newbie tag. I only have a small channel but I know that many of us here search the newbie tag looking for people were just starting out. If you have one or two subscribers, it’s always beneficial to do the tag so we get to know you thank you for sharing. Aloha. PS I’ll be 74 later this month and I have expanded my genres because of the new people here.
I love this video! And I can totally relate to the homeschooling life and having an amazing mom that read to me and led me to be a lifelong learner. Thank you for sharing bits of your life with us, and I’m so glad your channel is growing! Congratulations on over 2k! ✨🤍✨
I’m so glad I found your channel and this video! We have such similar taste in reading, and I was homeschooled too! Loved hearing you talk so passionately about why you love all of these books, makes me excited about reading all over again! And I totally get the struggle to find a satisfying mystery thriller. Some of my favorites in the last year or so have been None of This Is True, Kill For Me Kill For You, First Lie Wins, The Heiress, Listen For the Lie, and The Housemaid! Oh and I 100% agree that Powerless is not worth the hype! Was quite disappointed by that one 😬
This is so nice, thank you! We have so much in common. :) Thank you for the book suggestions! I'm excited to check them out - I have The Housemaid on my physical TBR right now.
ngl this has added so many books to my tbr because a lot of your books recs are so different from what people usually recommend. It gets repetitive sometimes but this was so refreshing and i cannot wait to expand my taste in books. Thank you 💗
I think you are now part of my holy circle of booktubers amongst Jack Edwards and Savage Reads. I watch them religiously. I love the camera quality and set up of yours. To think that this is the start of your yt career is just crazy.
Hi Olive - I so enjoyed this video and I’m looking forward to following your reading journey. The bonding moment you shared of your mom reading to you was so heart warming! You have such a calming vibe and I’m happy to have found your channel!
I'm really enjoying your channel! I like the fact that you're low-key. Whenever I click on a book tuber who is overly bubbly, I click off right away. Also, thanks for sharing your story!
Whoooa, maybe I shouldn't be so surprised, but your reading journey is so similar to mine. Read those series in the same order, and those four really got me into reading! (But I agree, Divergent fell flat). I also agree with almost all of your picks! If you're looking for good sci fi, RED RISING is such a good series. Maybe you've already read it, but it's now one of my favorites.
That's so cool! I love when that happens. I have Red Rising on my shelf right now! I'm waiting to be in the right move for a sci-fi like that, but I definitely am excited to read it.
I’m 67 and in my tweens I loved Nancy Drew and Hardy Boys. Then I had life get in the way. When I got back into reading it was romance all the way. Now the only books I don’t read is Romance. lol. I love reading.
I'm so glad that your husband coerced you to start up this RUclips channel!! ❤ I always look forward to your video uploads 😍 I also ABSOLUTELY agree with you on The Invisible Life of Addie Larue!!! That book has been on my TBR for about a year & I was hesitant to read it because it was out of my comfort zone but finally picked it up in July and it was an easy 6 stars read for me!!! ❤❤❤ I also hope I'll get around to "All the light we cannot see" before the year ends!
This is so nice, thank you so much!! And yeah Invisible Life does feel like one of those books people hesitate to read but when they do it’s SO rewarding.
Two mystery/thrillers I’ve enjoyed recently are The Kind Worth Killing and The Woman in the Window! Recommend especially the latter, there was one twist I had guessed at and one I didn’t see coming at all.
Emily Henry is fantastic 😁 Happy Place - the Ferris wheel scene is one of my most favorite memorable. I laughed reading that part. Really enjoyed that book! Fourth Wing was beautiful!! I heard so much negativity when it came out and I hesitated picking it up, but I'm glad I did. Very fun, very cool!! I love the characters, I love the world building.. so imaginative, so well played!! 😁
Ok, for mystery I highly HIGHLY recommend Tana French The Searcher. I have never been a fan of mystery, but someone recommended it and I was sucked in immediately. A retired Chicago cop moves to Ireland and begins fixing up his cottage and of course he just can't escape his detective instincts. Tana's writing is just exquisite.
Aww just got to your homeschooling section; I was homeschooled too and had a very similar read-aloud experience with my sweet mama 🥹 I read Mara Daughter of the Nile too (loved it), apparently it is very specific to the homeschooling community 😂😂
Just seeing you for the first time and am so excited to add some more books to my already long list of TBR! Went through several years of a reading slump after having kids and am so glad I have gotten back into reading:) My favorite read from 2023 was The Unmaking of June Farrow by Adrienne Young. If you haven’t read that one before, I’d recommend adding it to your list 😉 Also was good to hear of such great memories you have of being homeschooled!! I went to public but am homeschooling my two kids and can only hope they have similar memories 😊 We mostly do read alouds on audible and your video might have inspired me to be sure I do some reading too…
Yay this comment is so nice! Thank you for watching and I'm glad you got some new books to explore. Also kudos for homeschooling your kids - definitely not easy but it can be so worth it. It absolutely was for me. :) Also I loved The Unmaking of June Farrow! It also was one of my favorite reads of 2023. So fun.
Yes, Mara, Daughter of the Nile! When I read it as a young teen, I felt like I had been completely transported to ancient Egypt, and I had a hard time coming back to reality. So good.
I was so excited when you brought up The Night Circus!! It’s my favorite book and I’ve never heard anyone else talk about it!!! Also for a mystery recommendation I really like Karen M. McManus, all of her books I’ve been a huge fan of especially Two Can Keep A Secret!!
I love The Night Circus. I just read a book that gave me a similiar vibe.. in a modern day way anyway.. Here in Avalon by Tara Isabella Burton. About a young woman who tries to help rescue her sister from what she thinks may be a cult.. a travelling cabaret on a mysterious boat...
My favorite mystery thriller authors are Riley Sager and Ruth Ware. Both write very atmospheric and fascinating mysteries and have been putting out a new one every summer for a few years now so there’s always one to look forward to each year. Grady Hendrix is one I’ve enjoyed too that’s more in the horror vein, if you want to try that. My Best Friend’s Exorcism and Horrorstor are probably my favorite. For more of a sci fi leaning thriller, I’d go with Blake Crouch. He writes more like a Black Mirror episode. Very fast paced technological thrillers usually. Very page turnery.
Thank you for the suggestions! I'll have to look those up. I recently read Dark Matter by Blake Crouch, and it wasn't personally my favorite but I might try something else of his.
Glad I found your channel. I would recommend Hail Mary,by Weir, but the audio version, it is a wonderful product and the narrator is so good! If if you like Greek mythology, have you read the Wolf Den, it's a series.
Hi nice to meet you! It's refreshing to hear someone to not be that into From Blood and Ash. I would recommend Tom Mead's books for the mystery genre. They are locked room, golden age inspired mysteries. They have some magical/theatrical themes but ultimately the answers are all rooted in fact... but working out the answers is not easy so hopefully you won't be disappointed by the ending.
I watched some of your videos and i love how you explain the books makes me want to buy them. Hehe looking forward on your videos. Hope you have more followers someday!!
I relate heavily with feeling like Hunger Games was a "grown up" book when I read it for the first time! lol For thriller, try "We Used to Live Here" I listened to it on audio this month and it was so eerie
I am so glad I came across your channel and LOVED watching this video! I kind of like these questions, because they concentrate on the books rather than the redundance of what the general newbie tag can sometimes offer, though the questions being a bit similar in the positive attributes means you have to think a little bit and plug in different books for different prompts. While your favorite genres are not necessarily my favorites, we both have the commonality of being eclectic readers that are willing to give anything a chance. You should read what you enjoy, though. If modern mysteries do not work for you, you should not read them. I can see where a lot of mainstream fiction does not do anything to stand out. Agatha Christie is relatively reliable, though it can be argued that later on, her works were not as strong. I feel that Harry Potter established "the chosen one" trope and that The Hunger Games series' take on this was a rushed knockoff that was looking to be dynamic. While I loved the first book in the series, it seemed to boil the pot in needing to do everything with the primary focus being effect and satisfying the checklist often applied to box office films. In turn, The Hunger Games seemed to inspire many dystopians that followed. I own Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close and I, too, remember when the film came out. I did not get around to reading the book, but am especially now inclined to doing so. I am generally not someone that rereads, though I will do so if I need to refresh myself on a work and I have found it helpful. I am familiar with The Night Circus, though. Hah! BookTok especially had a great influence. The Song of Achilles is a prime example. I found it to be like The Real Housewives of Athens, it was so over the top with melodrama! There is no need for you to worry about unpopular opinions. You like what you like and should read what you want. The Song of Achilles is a book I did not like and I have to say the same about The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue. I did not like the book and the direction it chose to take. Addie could have taken such an enthralling direction with her immorality and the state in which she was in, because instead we mainly get her interactions with Henry during the present day and her encounters with Luc during the past and just about NOTHING ELSE from the past. I do, however, want to look into Everyone Brave is Forgiven and The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo. I only have a vague idea about the former, but have heard plenty about the latter and am inclined to check them out. I also want to look into The Light Between Oceans. I am impressed with how quickly you reached 2K subscribers, but you have such a good presence and do such a fine job making your videos engaging. I love how casual they feel! I thought The Martian was a great book! I felt Andy Weir was the perfect person to write this book, because he knew his subject matter and was able to translate it into a book that was accurate, dramatic at times, and always entertaining. I heard a lot about All the Light We Cannot See when I first started Booktubing and I own the book, but need to read it. There are quite a few books I would be happy to see adapted into film, but I would want these films to be done justice. I also hate love triangles! I honestly never heard of Mara: Daughter of the Nile and it is fascinating that your mom was able to find a hidden gem like that. It is great that it was on your curriculum, though! Was the woman that made a cameo through the window your mother? That was quite a riot and I believe your husband, too? Anyway, I will look into Mara: Daughter of the Nile as well. Thank you for sharing your thoughts on so many books, many of which I will have to look into when I get the opportunity! -Josh
Great video, The Will of the Many, The Night Circus, and The Martian are fantastic! It's always fun to see new recommendations. I don't read a lot of mystery/thriller but here's a few general recommendations of mine: The Tapestry by Henry H. Neff - If you ever get nostalgic for Percy Jackson or Harry Potter but want something new, give Max McDaniels a try! The Aurelian Cycle by Rosaria Munda - A political YA trilogy with dragons and a slow burn romance with an interesting cast of characters Veronica Speedwell series by Deanna Raybourn - Historical fiction mysteries set in the Victorian era featuring another slow burn romance with fun banter interwoven throughout Guns of the Dawn by Adrian Tchaikovsky - A standalone military focused story with a tiny splash of fantasy and a prose reminiscent of Jane Austen I hope one of these different stories can help somebody else browsing through!
Hello Olive. Best wishes with what you choose to read. For thrillers my favourites are the oldies of Raymond Chandler such as The Big Sleep and Lady in the Lake. Dashiell Hammett is fantastic. The Maltese Falcon is pretty perfectly written. And then of course there are the Sherlock Holmes short stories by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.
I just finished “All The Colors of The Dark” by Chris Whitaker for my neighborhood book club. Really good mystery. Starts off a little cheesy but gets better, even funny. Wonderful character development.
I just found out your channel and it's been great to hear your perspectives on the books you read. Keep on the good work, we love it! Greetings from Brazil! 🤍
Hi! I have 40+ years of reading experience on you so my recommendations may be a little vintage but they are books I think you might enjoy: For mystery thrillers - The Jackson Brodie series from Kate Atkinson, The Collector by John Fowles(my very first thriller read in my teens), Alive by Piers Paul Read; Fantasy - anything by Patricia McKillip, The Dragonsong trilogy by Anne McCaffrey, The Snow Queen by Joan D. Vinge; Magical Realism - Garden Spells by Sarah Addison Allen (actually all of her books are magical) Enjoy!
One of my favorite thrillers of all time is The Borrowed by Chan Ho Kei which takes place in Hong Kong. It is the book that I had to come back to the first part of the story right after finishing the last line of it. Dropped my jaw on the floor and have not picked it up since then
Olive, I think we must have used the same curriculum because Mara: Daughter of the Nile was one my mom read aloud to me as well! It was one of my favorites from childhood that I read over and over all through high school! Love to see another Mara fan!!
Hi Olive I’ve just recently got into Thrillers this year and would definitely Recommend The Only One Left by Riley Sager it definitely gave me Agatha Christie vibes
I am currently reading we used to live here by Marcus Kliewer. Also one that really creeped me out was called The Chain by Adrian McKinty. One of my favorite books is Debbie Macomber cottage by the sea
I love VE Schwab! I still think about the Invisible Life of Addie LaRue often. It’s like nothing I’ve ever read before and I would have fought a bear for Addie. That ending was 🤯 i kind of wish there was a sequel, but also the last few pages were absolute perfection. So empowering. If you haven’t read it yet, I highly recommend her Cassidy Blake series. First book is City of Ghosts, and perfect for autumn/spooky season. They are more fascinating and charming than scary, but the spooky vibes are vibing, and you get to visit a different city in each book: Edinburgh, Paris, then New Orleans.
I love her too! She's so great - Shades of Magic is still one of my favorite fantasy trilogies ever. And thanks for the suggestion! I'll definitely look into them, especially as we head into spooky season now... can't wait for all the fall reads.
@@olivesbooknook I just put A Darker Shade of Magic on hold at the library! I haven’t read all of her books yet, and you have convinced me that this is the next one I need to check out :) Yes, give me all the fall season vibes! 🍁 🎃 🐈⬛ ☕️
Hi Olive, I totally agree with you on Powerless. I thought it was okay and was disappointed with book 2 😔. Anyway new subscriber here. Really enjoyed the video and your vibe 😊
Really enjoying your videos and always come away with new books to add to my TBR 😊 Some thriller/mystery recommendations: The collector by John Fowles is a good psychological thriller. Probably my favourite book I had to read for school. Lisa Jewell has good easy read thrillers, None of This is True got me out of a reading slump! Gone girl and Fight Club also great but I think the movie adaptations have spoiled the plot for most people by now!
Saving Noah by Lucinda Berry, the Silent patient, or any true crime books by Ann rule , they're older true crime but I love them . The only one left , or lock every door by Riley Sager. Never lie by Frieda McFadden.
For a magical book with a bit of mystery, a bookstore, a secret garden, time travel?, and lots of literary references, I recommend Nightfall in the Garden of Deep Time by Tracy Higley.
This was so fun and loved getting to know you a bit more! I really need to re-read Hunger Games and I’ve never read Percy Jackson and I’ve heard such good things! I agree that Powerless wasn’t my favorite and got my expectations so high! Idk if I’m gonna read Reckless 😅
Percy Jackson really is core for me, haha. You should give it shot if you're in the mood for a fast-paced middle grade reader. I'm really trying to decide if I'm gonna push through Reckless. I know I won't be able to right now...but maybe eventually.
I’m new to this book tube thing. But a lifetime reader. Retired now. Your channel is well done I think and your presentation excellent. No flailing hands, rapid speech, or annoying facial expressions!!!!! You’re great!!! (Sorry couldn’t resist I was a former employee trainer !!!!!! Ha!!!!! I have one recommend. It’s Thomas Perry the Jane Whitfield series. NOT his other books …. Like the Butcher Boy series I never could read those because of language and violence..BUT, Jane Whitfield is a Native American “guide” who helps people in trouble disappear. She’s a force of nature literally. She’s brilliant and it is amazing to go on her journeys…. The first book in the series is Vanishing Act
Vaguely new to your channel and I read a lot of mysteries and thrillers. I really enjoyed the book House Of Glass. I don't remember the author's but it shouldn't be hard to find. It was a BOTM pick in July this year. I borrowed it from someone.
I’ve read House of Glass recently actually! I thought it was okay, I liked the premise but wasn’t a big fan of how it all wrapped up. It was a quick an easy read though and I do enjoy that.
I wouldn’t really call them “new” but I am having the exact same issue with modern mystery novels but I would highly recommend checking out The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo series. To me, what makes the best Agatha Christie novels great is her ability to infuse what were modern issues and concerns into her mysteries (rise of Fascism, death of the British empire, etc.) and I think Stieg Larsson absolutely captured that tension with The Girl of the Dragon Tattoo series. His background as an investigative journalist looking into alt-right Swedish groups honestly makes the first book feel prophetic- showing the simmering fascistic sentiments still lingering in Scandinavia. These tensions would come to the surface in the 2010s after Larssen’s death and it’s fascinating to see how he predicted these elements resurfacing as early as 2004.
I highly recommend the Inspector Gamache series by Lousie Penny. I have raved about this series in my channel for years now. It is a traditional crime investigation series but with great characters and overarching narratives that take several books to play out. I recommend giving the first few books a try!
I love watching your videos! I would suggest Dead Woman Crossing by Jeneva Rose. It's a series, two books are out so far. Currently can not wait for the next book in this series.
Just discovered your channel through this video and you have a new subscriber!! 🤍I looooove fantasy too and I love a good mystery, especially both in one book. Some of the books you mention are very high on my favorites list (like the seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo and of course Harry Potter). So, I've got a mystery recommendation for you that I think you might like (based on the books you mention in this video): The Last Tale of the Flower Bride by Roshani Chokshi. Also one my favorites. It made me feel sooo many different emotions. I thought the mystery was pretty good too. I predicted the ending, but quite late in the book and I feel like the author gave me just a enough right before the end to have me scream at the book: "I KNEW IT!!!" 🤭 It has fantastical elements that make you question whether you're reading fantasy or maybe magical realism or maybe just a realism book. It's super unique. If you read it and know anything like it, I'd love to know! Also a shout out to my all time favorite book: Babel by R.F. Kuang (historical fantasy set in Oxford). If you want a good ugly sobbing cry, go for it! I wish I could read it again for the first time.🥺
If you’re looking for modern mystery novels I’d suggest the Strike series by Robert Galbraith. I really like them. The first one is called “The Cuckoo’s Calling”.
@11:40 I completely understand this... I get turned off when writing seems lazy and sloppy ... I'm a stickler for breaking up POVs and I don't like it when an author switches between POV within a scene, just an example .... And spice can really turn me off, ironically I guess 🤣🤣 I loved Fear the Flames but the spicy scenes I thought over the top and ridiculous. 👍
I also get regularly disappointed with thrillers/mysteries :( the ones I can think of right now that I had more fun with are Riley Sager’s Home Before Dark and The Only One Left… maybe The Wife Upstairs by Rachel Hawkins? Also enjoyed American Gothic by Silva Moreno-Garcia. I think having an element of horror gives it more of a kick
I don't see the "love triangle" in Shadow & Bone. All of the "love interests" serve as an analogy for her own inner turmoil at some point. There is a crush in the beginning that sets up the MC's naivete at the start of her journey. It's very short-lived and illustrates her struggle with power and its dynamics. There is a second interest later in the series, but this one has the MC parse out the balance between her desires and duty. With the enduring love interest, they are so young they both unintentionally and intentionally hurt each other, there is exaggerated jealousy, but I respect their relationship a little more for its realism. And that relationship is symbolic of her innocence and its ability to survive the harsh realities of war and trauma. Maybe this reframing will help you get through it if you ever decide to give it another chance.
I was honestly so surprised when I read Fourth Wing. I thought I would hate it but I actually enjoyed it so much more than I was expecting, though I am apprehensive to read the sequel since that seems to have the unanimous review that it isn't as good as the first which is a shame.
The sequel is definitely not as good as the first one. My personal opinion is because it was rushed so much by the publishing company - Fourth Wing was SO successful that I think they just wanted R.Y. to pump out the next book as quickly as possible to capitalize on the success. I'm hoping that book 3 will be better since it seems like she's taken a lot more time writing it!
I generally avoid hyped books when I’m not already familiar with the author’s previous writing, as it’s so subjective, plus I’m a mood reader, so have to go how I feel rather than what people recommend.
I have 2 recommendations for a mystery and a thriller! Mystery: The 7 and a half deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle by Stuart Turton Thriller: The Whisper Man by Alex North
Great video :) finally someone with similar taste, my the most favourite books are The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue, All the light we cannot see and 11/22/63. For mystery I currently read Lisey's story by Stephen King. I am not sure whether it is recommendable... yet :)
@@olivesbooknook Honestly, I have never planned starting reading Stephen King, it was just that hype. And I was very surprised. I read It, The Stand... I did not care much about a plot, but his characters and his writing! I did not want those stories to end.
We should thank your husband for encouraging you to create this channel! I rarely comment on videos, but I had to let you know that your content is awesome. Here goes a book recommendation: 11/22/63 by Stephen King. It's a historical fiction with time travel (and no, there's no horror). I think you'd enjoy it ;)
Have you read any of the Dresden Files by Jim Butcher? it is a fantasy series about Private Investigator Wizard. James Marsters, Spike from Buffy the Vampire Slayer reads the series on Audible. As for mysteries, I mostly read Detective Fiction, meaning Detective Inspectors in England, though I do like Louise Penny novels. For historical detective fiction, I would suggest Charles Todd, Inspector Rutledge, or their Bess Crawford mysteries. They are set in WWI, the first series is a shell-shocked, old name for PTSD detective, the second is a nurse during the war that gets too curious about deaths/murders. Elizabeth George, Inspector Langley series, Deborah Crombie Duncan Kincaid and Gemma James. Cozy mysteries with my favorite British detective character is Martha Grimes series. My favorite all time book are Fools Crow’ by James Welch, Native American literature, and The Talisman by Stephen King and Peter Straub, fantasy/minor horror, Tom Sawyer retelling.
I will follow you forever if for no other reason than you loved Invisible Life of Addie LaRue! This book is one of the best I’ve EVER read! ❤ I love it. I was so sad it ended. Have you read The Thirteen Tale?
I LOVED the Will of the Many and I stalk James Islington's website on the regular. Also not a fan of From Blood and Ash and Powerless- too dramatic and YA for me.
I just found your channel and I looooove your filming style, it’s the perfect mix of cinematic and casual!!
Thank you so much, I really appreciate that!
EDIT: My favorite genre is Thriller/Mystery.
That's so nice, thank you so much for the kind words!
Oh I love these newbie questions so much more than the usual ones I have seen! So excited to have found your channel because I share so many of your sentiments about these titles! Though as a mama with teens, I tend to read lots of YA. We homeschool too, and my daughter absolutely loves Mara.
Wow, that's so kind! Thank you so much for watching and commenting, I appreciate it. :)
My wife Hannah and I love your vibe a lot. My wife found you back when you had 500 followers and said, “I really hope she does well on RUclips, she has your vibe if you made book-tube videos”. We are looking forward to seeing you and your husband’s review video when the time comes!
This is so sweet, oh my goodness. That really means a lot, thank you!
Thanks so much!
* full accents not fall accents. What are fall accents? Like Dracula??
Ah thank you so much for watching and commenting! So cool to hear we had similar experiences when it comes to homeschooling and reading. I really love that.
Also - my first thought with fall accents was definitely Dracula and maybe The Sanderson Sisters? 😂 A very funny thought
I was homeschooled as well, you reminiscing your days with your mom reading aloud brought back many memories of my mom doing the same. There were six of us kids, and she would make sure there were piles of laundry to fold. While we folded laundry, she would read. I kicked started my love of reading and being emersed in other worlds.
Ah, this is so sweet. Thank you for sharing! It's such a special time to reminisce on.
Thanks for such a great video! I just added Mara Daughter of the Nile to my TBR to preview for my tutoring groups. Thanks for the recommendation!
Awe that's awesome! I hope you like it!
I love this video! And I can totally relate to the homeschooling life and having an amazing mom that read to me and led me to be a lifelong learner. Thank you for sharing bits of your life with us, and I’m so glad your channel is growing! Congratulations on over 2k! ✨🤍✨
Thank you so much, that is so nice and really means a lot.
Thank you 💗
So exciting! Thank you for the kind words. Can't wait for you to check out some of these books.
I think you are now part of my holy circle of booktubers amongst Jack Edwards and Savage Reads. I watch them religiously. I love the camera quality and set up of yours. To think that this is the start of your yt career is just crazy.
This is so nice :') Thank you so much!
Hi Olive - I so enjoyed this video and I’m looking forward to following your reading journey. The bonding moment you shared of your mom reading to you was so heart warming! You have such a calming vibe and I’m happy to have found your channel!
Thank you so much!
I'm really enjoying your channel! I like the fact that you're low-key. Whenever I click on a book tuber who is overly bubbly, I click off right away. Also, thanks for sharing your story!
Thank you so much, that's so nice!
Your husband sounds very supportive, this warms my old jaded heart❤
He’s the best 🥹❤️
I’m 67 and in my tweens I loved Nancy Drew and Hardy Boys. Then I had life get in the way. When I got back into reading it was romance all the way. Now the only books I don’t read is Romance. lol. I love reading.
Same!!!!!!!
Welcome to the BookTube community! Best of luck with your channel - I look forward to watching more of your videos. Happy Reading! 😎📚👍
Thank you!
Two mystery/thrillers I’ve enjoyed recently are The Kind Worth Killing and The Woman in the Window! Recommend especially the latter, there was one twist I had guessed at and one I didn’t see coming at all.
Ah thank you!! I will look into those ❤️
Emily Henry is fantastic 😁
Happy Place - the Ferris wheel scene is one of my most favorite memorable.
I finally gave Emily Henry a go and bought Happy Place recently. Your comment makes me even more excited to read it.
I hope you like it! Definitely one of my favorites of the entire year.
For thriller, I’d try something by Riley Sager. Home Before Dark and Lock Every Door are two really good ones.
Awesome, thank you!
This sounds amazing. Thanks for the recommendation!
I always recommend Janice Hallett’s “The Appeal” for folks trying to break into mystery. Enjoyed the video!
Aww just got to your homeschooling section; I was homeschooled too and had a very similar read-aloud experience with my sweet mama 🥹 I read Mara Daughter of the Nile too (loved it), apparently it is very specific to the homeschooling community 😂😂
That's so sweet! I do think Mara is pretty specific to homeschoolers and I love that. :) And thanks for the book recommendation!
Wait. This is so random, but I love how “soft” this video looks. It’s so cozy 🥹
That’s so nice thank you 🥹
Love your videos and book recommendations and the esthetic of your content!
Thank you so much!
Just seeing you for the first time and am so excited to add some more books to my already long list of TBR! Went through several years of a reading slump after having kids and am so glad I have gotten back into reading:)
My favorite read from 2023 was The Unmaking of June Farrow by Adrienne Young. If you haven’t read that one before, I’d recommend adding it to your list 😉
Also was good to hear of such great memories you have of being homeschooled!!
Also I loved The Unmaking of June Farrow! It also was one of my favorite reads of 2023. So fun.
I second the Inspector Gamache series by Louise Penny. For creepy mystery, Freida McFadden’s books are great!
Nice, thank you for the suggestions!!
Yes, Mara, Daughter of the Nile! When I read it as a young teen, I felt like I had been completely transported to ancient Egypt, and I had a hard time coming back to reality. So good.
It's the best!!
I was so excited when you brought up The Night Circus!! It’s my favorite book and I’ve never heard anyone else talk about it!!!
Also for a mystery recommendation I really like Karen M. McManus, all of her books I’ve been a huge fan of especially Two Can Keep A Secret!!
Night Circus is the absolute BEST!
Thank you for the mystery suggestion. I'll definitely have to look it up!
Love your videos, thanks for sharing your story with us! it made me think about how I got into books and my journey with reading.
Ah thank you! That's awesome.
Glad I found your channel. I would recommend Hail Mary,by Weir, but the audio version, it is a wonderful product and the narrator is so good! If if you like Greek mythology, have you read the Wolf Den, it's a series.
Thank you! Project Hail Mary was actually the last book I read, it was awesome.
omg yes the audiobook for PHM! That book has one of my all time favorite characters 😸
Awesome, will definitely look into that! Thanks!
I watched some of your videos and i love how you explain the books makes me want to buy them. Hehe looking forward on your videos. Hope you have more followers someday!!
That’s so nice, thank you so much!
I relate heavily with feeling like Hunger Games was a "grown up" book when I read it for the first time! lol For thriller, try "We Used to Live Here" I listened to it on audio this month and it was so eerie
Ah thanks for the recommendation!! I love an eerie read.
-Josh
I just bought Mara Daughter of the Nile! I'm so excited that you loved it so much! Can't wait to read it with my kids in their homeschool
That is awesome!!! I hope you love it.
Great video, The Will of the Many, The Night Circus, and The Martian are fantastic! It's always fun to see new recommendations. I don't read a lot of mystery/thriller but here's a few general recommendations of mine:
The Tapestry by Henry H. Neff - If you ever get nostalgic for Percy Jackson or Harry Potter but want something new, give Max McDaniels a try!
The Aurelian Cycle by Rosaria Munda - A political YA trilogy with dragons and a slow burn romance with an interesting cast of characters
Veronica Speedwell series by Deanna Raybourn - Historical fiction mysteries set in the Victorian era featuring another slow burn romance with fun banter interwoven throughout
Guns of the Dawn by Adrian Tchaikovsky - A standalone military focused story with a tiny splash of fantasy and a prose reminiscent of Jane Austen
I hope one of these different stories can help somebody else browsing through!
Thank you so much for the recommendations! Will definitely look into them.
Just found your channel and I love it ❤it’s so cozy and chill booktube and I love that
Ah thank you so much!
Thank you!
Thank you so much!!
Dropped my jaw on the floor and have not picked it up since then
Ooh - thank you for the recommendation! I'll have to look into that.
Olive, I think we must have used the same curriculum because Mara: Daughter of the Nile was one my mom read aloud to me as well! It was one of my favorites from childhood that I read over and over all through high school! Love to see another Mara fan!!
Wow that's so cool! I love that.
Hi Olive I’ve just recently got into Thrillers this year and would definitely Recommend The Only One Left by Riley Sager it definitely gave me Agatha Christie vibes
Thank you!
Mystery thriller - Kill for me, Kill for you - Steve Cavanagh; It has multiple povs and great twists
I absolutely LOVED this book!
Ooh thank you for the suggestion!
I am currently reading we used to live here by Marcus Kliewer. Also one that really creeped me out was called The Chain by Adrian McKinty. One of my favorite books is Debbie Macomber cottage by the sea
Ooh - thank you for the suggestions!
Yes!! I’m so excited for you to read that series it’s soooo good and interesting
Hi Olive, I totally agree with you on Powerless. I thought it was okay and was disappointed with book 2 😔. Anyway new subscriber here. Really enjoyed the video and your vibe 😊
Yeaaah not my fav. But thanks for the nice words! happy to have you here. :)
For mystery/thrillers - I really liked One by One by Ruth Ware and Verity by Colleen Hoover :)
Thank you for the suggestions! I'll definitely have to look those up.
Fourth Wing is not my favorite book, but dear Lord, it helped to cure my reading slump as well, just for that, it has a special place inside my heart
Dude for real! Exactly what happened for me.
Really enjoying your videos and always come away with new books to add to my TBR 😊
Some thriller/mystery recommendations:
The collector by John Fowles is a good psychological thriller. Probably my favourite book I had to read for school.
Lisa Jewell has good easy read thrillers, None of This is True got me out of a reading slump!
Gone girl and Fight Club also great but I think the movie adaptations have spoiled the plot for most people by now!
Thank you so much!!
Saving Noah by Lucinda Berry, the Silent patient, or any true crime books by Ann rule , they're older true crime but I love them . The only one left , or lock every door by Riley Sager. Never lie by Frieda McFadden.
I loved The Silent Patient and have Lock Every Door on my TBR!
I heard “the couple next door” is a good mystery/thriller book. I haven’t read it personally but I will soon this fall season 😊
So excited for spooky season and spooky books!
@@olivesbooknook yessss 😁 I’m so ready for it
For a magical book with a bit of mystery, a bookstore, a secret garden, time travel?, and lots of literary references, I recommend Nightfall in the Garden of Deep Time by Tracy Higley.
That sounds amazing!
* purchases The Will of the Many * I’ve heard such good things!!!
Percy Jackson really is core for me, haha. You should give it shot if you're in the mood for a fast-paced middle grade reader.
I'm really trying to decide if I'm gonna push through Reckless. I know I won't be able to right now...but maybe eventually.
Excited to hear your thoughts on it!
Thank you so much!
Thriller that I really liked: The Snowman by Jo Nesbo! Detective/ murder mystery in sweden. Left me in chills
Ooh thanks for the suggestion!
Hi! I'm new, too! Oh my. Same thing for me with the mystery/thriller books. I haven't liked the ending of the two that I've read so far 😕
You should try out The Silent Patient if you haven't already!
Wow this is really great. Thanks so much for the recommendation!
just came across your channel, and i LOVE YOUR VIDEOS AND UR VIBEEEE
Thank you so much!!!
I highly recommend the Inspector Gamache series by Lousie Penny. I have raved about this series in my channel for years now. It is a traditional crime investigation series but with great characters and overarching narratives that take several books to play out. I recommend giving the first few books a try!
Thank you for the recommendation! I appreciate it!
Hey, even for me percy jackson lighting thief was the book that got me into reading 😌 it's so emotional 😢
That's awesome!! It really is the best.
I love watching your videos! I would suggest Dead Woman Crossing by Jeneva Rose. It's a series, two books are out so far. Currently can not wait for the next book in this series.
Thank you so much for the suggestion! I'll definitely look into it.
I wish I could read it again for the first time.🥺
Ah thank you so much! That's so nice. We have a lot of common interest it seems. I really appreciate the suggestions - I'll have to look into them!
If you’re looking for modern mystery novels I’d suggest the Strike series by Robert Galbraith. I really like them. The first one is called “The Cuckoo’s Calling”.
Thank you!
You might like The Witching Hour by Anne Rice. Ive read Yellowface recently too and that was really goid.
Ooh I'll look into it! Thanks so much!
Try David Baldacci for modern mysteries/ thrillers - go for the memory man series first or atlee pine
Thanks! I'll check it out.
@11:40 I completely understand this... I get turned off when writing seems lazy and sloppy ... I'm a stickler for breaking up POVs and I don't like it when an author switches between POV within a scene, just an example ....
And spice can really turn me off, ironically I guess 🤣🤣
I loved Fear the Flames but the spicy scenes I thought over the top and ridiculous.
Ooh thanks for the suggestions! I appreciate it!
For a psychological thriller about an obsessive cat-n-mouse game between two library workers, I recommend How Can I Help You by Laura Sims.
Thanks!
Just purchased Mara Daughter of the Nile!!!!! Thank you for this video!
That's AWESOME! Would love to know what you think of it!
I generally avoid hyped books when I’m not already familiar with the author’s previous writing, as it’s so subjective, plus I’m a mood reader, so have to go how I feel rather than what people recommend.
Totally get that!! I’m the same I think
For thriller/horror try Hex by Thomas Olde Heuvelt. I don’t read a lot in the genre but was captivated by this book.
Thank you for the suggestion!
Read the Silent Patient by Alex Michalaides for psychological triller. Not scary but a great page turner. Thanks for sharing.
Read it a couple months ago actually, it was great 👍🏻
I have 2 recommendations for a mystery and a thriller!
Mystery:
The 7 and a half deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle by Stuart Turton
Thriller:
The Whisper Man by Alex North
Thank you! I actually have recently added 7 and 1/2 to my TBR, so I’m even more interested in it now.
Great video :) finally someone with similar taste, my the most favourite books are The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue, All the light we cannot see and 11/22/63. For mystery I currently read Lisey's story by Stephen King. I am not sure whether it is recommendable... yet :)
Ah thank you! I love those books. I actually haven't read any Stephen King yet but maybe I should try to pick something up...
@@olivesbooknook Honestly, I have never planned starting reading Stephen King, it was just that hype. And I was very surprised. I read It, The Stand... I did not care much about a plot, but his characters and his writing! I did not want those stories to end.
That’s awesome! Very good to know…
We should thank your husband for encouraging you to create this channel! I rarely comment on videos, but I had to let you know that your content is awesome. Here goes a book recommendation: 11/22/63 by Stephen King. It's a historical fiction with time travel (and no, there's no horror). I think you'd enjoy it ;)
That is so nice. :) Thank you so much. And thanks for the book suggestion!
Ah thank you for the suggestions! I appreciate it so much.
I loved this video! I am new to booktube and I relate to you a lot🤍
im in love w the quality of your videos! what camera and lense do you use, if you dont mind?
Thank you! I use an Ursa 4.6K and a Sony Fx30
Everyone in my family has killed someone is a really good mystery. Not thriller but such a neat way for a mystery to be told and read.
Ooh cool! Thanks for the recommendation!
Honestly I'm shocked how similar our book tastes are😳 sorry but I'm calling you my booktube sister from now on😂
I ACCEPT ❤️
I posted one video once and gave up completely. I think I'll give it another shot with this tag 😊😊
Yay you should!
First time watching you! Love your video ❤ 👍🏻
Ah thank you!
Try Silent Patient and/or the Maidens by Alex Michaelides
Loved the Silent Patient.
So happy RUclips recommended your channel ☺️🫶🏻 new subscriber from Mexico (Chihuahua) 🤍
Thank you so much! So glad to have you here!
I think you might enjoy Benjamin Stevenson’s books, especially if you enjoy Agatha Christie.
I'll check it out!
I agree with you on books that were hyped and weren't deserved. Lightlark, Powerless and IMO any JLA didn't hit the mark.
Welcome to booktube 📚🧋
You NEED to read Rock Paper Scissors by Alice Feeney!!
You're not the first person to recommend this to me, so I'll definitely have to look into it soon :)
I will follow you forever if for no other reason than you loved Invisible Life of Addie LaRue! This book is one of the best I’ve EVER read! ❤ I love it. I was so sad it ended. Have you read The Thirteen Tale?
Ahh yes Addie LaRue is just amazing! No I haven't read The Thirteen Tale...never even heard of it...maybe I should give it a try?
Absolutely do. I know you’ll love it. It’s been around for quite awhile 💜
I LOVED the Will of the Many and I stalk James Islington's website on the regular. Also not a fan of From Blood and Ash and Powerless- too dramatic and YA for me.
Yes agreed!!
