Wealth is a GREAT insulator from the effects of stupidity or lack of common sense. They can just spend their way out of their dumbass decisions and make it someone else's problem. But most REAL wealthy people were born with the $ chromosome or get lucky with stupid ideas and bad decisions. A few REALLY earn it through hard work, but at least half of them would be eligible for a lifetime membership at Club Fed if we actually knew how they got there.
But i'm not saying they're dumber than the consumers and fetuses who fall for their scams either.

As a heavy maintenance mechanic, I can say that the O2 gen have an expiration date of either 10, 15 or 20 depending on the models and we replace them 25 months before the expiration date. The mask themselves also have their own exp. date. The gens are in fact, not filled with oxygen but work in a fashion similar to a grenade, you pull on the mask to put it on which will pull on a pin that once remove activate the chemical reaction creating oxygen (also the generator itself becomes really hot so dont try to touch it). The generators are rated to produce the O2 for about 12-15min (more than enough time for the plane to go down in altitude to a point where you can breath normally) but out of the hundred+ that I have activated they all seem to last somewhere between 20 to 30 min

As an engineer safety critical systems are always designed with a healthy safety margin. If you have to guarantee that every unit is able to generate at least 12 minutes of usable oxygen you have to take into account that some will perform a bit worse than the mean. It seems like they used a safety margin of double the requirement to guarantee that even the worst performing unit is comfortably above the limit.

I was on a flight when the oxygen masks came down suddenly. Scary moment as we had no idea why this had happened. We were told to put them on and stow the tray tables, I thought it must be serious if they want us to throw food and drink on the floor. Then the engines went quiet, adding to the scary part of this and then the real clincher, totally ruining the integrity of my underpants, the plane started a very steep dive. I still can't believe how quiet everyone was, people just sat quietly with their masks on and clinching their armrests, tightly.
Although it seemed like an age, a few minutes later the engine sound came back up and the aircraft levelled off. We landed at the next available airport and as we got off the plane we were told that the aircraft had lost pressurisation and was not able to continue. We were transferred onto another flight a few hours later.
Scary but, as it turns out, never actually in any danger.

    • @rileyflack8010
      @rileyflack8010 4 месяца назад +17

When pressurization is lost, one of the immediate goals is to get to a level with breathable air. Probably why the dive happened.

@@rileyflack8010 I know that now but not when it happened. It would have been better for everyone if they had told us what was happening so that we weren't all frightened until the plane actually touched down. To be honest though, the 12 hours in Madrid airport, waiting for a replacement aircraft, was a worse ordeal 🤔

The engines keep the plane pressurized. When the engine(s) go quiet, then the cabin loses pressure. Sounds like they were able to get the engines restarted thankfully!

    • @Andy-xs3ld
      @Andy-xs3ld 3 месяца назад +5

It was something else that caused pressure loss. The engines went quiet because they were throttled back to idle. But I get your point, had we lost all the engines then I guess we'd have had a similar scare, only that would have most likely have had a worse outcome 🙄

It's not so much Pilot vs Flight Attendant so much as professional vs idiot. There's a lot of training that goes into being an FA since, as stated by the pilot here, they are the ones in charge of cabin safety. They are in charge of dealing with passenger emergencies (health risks), and crash/evacuation procedures. Something tells me the "FA" influencer might just be someone who isn't actually an FA, or wasn't one long enough to really understand how aviation works.

They brought us back twice and a we were delayed an hour and stuck on the plane but they were able to fix the issue within that time and the flight went smoothly. Sometimes things happen and they can get them fixed. The flight attendants were very nice about everything and made sure we were in good spirits by the time the plane finally took off.

    Mainntenance here:
The oxygen masks and "PSU" (passenger service units) get looked over every C-check.
The masks get their oxygen from "oxygen generators" or "candles" that get activated when you give a strong jerk to the strings that deploy with the masks.
Typical arrangement is 3 masks (seats) per candle.
The candles have a shelf life. They get recycled or otherwise disposed regularly.

Avionics technician here. I'm responsible for the electrical, computer and communication systems on planes. Not sure what part of 14 CFR governs the oxygen mask deployment on airliners but: Every plane has an interval at which certain inspections are *required* to be performed. That's what the alphabetical checks are. C check is every 2 years or so, A check is every 400-600 flight hours, etc. At regular intervals the oxygen mask deployment system gets tested. We make sure they manually deploy via the control in the cockpit and also automatically by connecting a pneumatic test set to the planes pitot/static sensors to simulate a certain altitude at which the masks are observed to deploy or not deploy. Where I work it's mandatory that our quality control inspector is present when this test is performed because it's safety critical. If they don't deploy the problem is either fixed or the jet isn't allowed to leave until it's corrected. We also verify oxygen flow rate and that the masks themselves aren't broken. Like little plastic pieces and what not.
Wall of text I know. Point being, she is completely wrong. Just about any and everything you can imagine and more is regularly inspected/tested for proper working condition. ESPECIALLY anything to do with flight safety or emergency systems.

He said it was going to be a while because of the paperwork, that it was something easy enough to fix, but he will not fly until it will be taken care of. Safe to say passengers (my husband included) where happy to wait. So, yes, if the captain feels that is not safe, they just don't fly. BTW, congrats on your promotion.

But the pilots and flight attendants haven't studied the subject matter of crash survival. They're just telling you what they're required to tell you.
People like to watch channels like this and think being a pilot qualifies what is being said, but they're often talking about things that have nothing to do with the pilot.
I'm not saying they don't know what they're talking about but being a pilot doesn't mean they would know.
Lots of instructors I've had can tell you what they learned, but have no clue if something is true or not, but will argue with people who've actually tried things and found the explanation to be wrong. A lot know what airspeed to fly on approach and the correct attitude and it works. But they wouldn't be able to work out how to do things differently. They just do what they were taught and nothing else.
Be careful thinking pilots are experts, especially be suspicious of those that act as if they are.

Good video. Hapeended to me once when the Captain came on pre departure and explained that the weather radar was not working. He said that usually that would not be a massive issue but there were thunderstorms forcast on route so flight was delayed 24 hours whilst they sorted it. Prob cost the airline lots of £ but well done to him! Safety first allways.

I am a pathologist. I did 6 months of forensic. THERE ARE NO CASES OF ANYONE LOSING THEIR VERTEBRAL COLUMN IN THE ENTIRE FORENSIC PATHOLOGY LITERATURE! I saw a case presentation where someone’s parachute did not open and he landed standing up from 9000’ . His trivia’s broke and protruded through the skin and planted into the ground to his crotch. The femurs broke as well. The vertebral column usually described to “a pile of plates stacked on top of each other, with a sponge in between”. This guy broke all of his vertebras and his height shrunk by 2 feet.. The “landing” impact caused multiple skull fractures due to the energy transmitted to the head even though the vertebrae were flattened. His eyes bulged a little due to the pressure of the brain once the orbital sockets, which are very thin also shattered. Most of his teeth stayed in place but also broke. He had a smirky smile kind of suggesting “hey, I did it!” I don’t think it was intentional. Making a long stout short: NO THE VERTEBRAL COLUMN WAS SMASHED AS A PILE OF BROKEN PLATES, IT DID NOT COME THROUGH HIS SKULL!
Additionally, his liver detached and was sitting on top of his bladder. His intestines ruptured, but the abdomen remained closed and intact. The kidneys and spleen spleen ruptured.but remained attached. His lungs collapsed. The heart remained intact but had large hematomas. This guy was a skydiving instructor with hundreds of skydives. I guess the sign I saw at a small airport :
“IF AT FIRST YOU DONT SUCCEED. MAYBE SKYDIVING IS NOT FOR YOU”
You can contact me for any medical questions. I did over 500 autopsies from which only 80 or so were from the Medical Examiner’s Office, cleared to be done at the hospital morgue. Around October, the ME’s office is running out of funds and they will usually clear everything to be done at a teaching hospitals except those who come with a knife, ax or machete attached to the body. We fill a special form, take a lot of pictures and keep the organs and the body in the morgue drawer till the ME clears it and co-sign our diagnosis. The ones like this skydiver, requires the ME or “Death Investigator” - usually a police officer or Sargent who takes college classes to learn the essentials and pass a test.
I travelled a lot, lecturing and presenting at international meetings. I accumulated 20 million miles and have been in situations that are comical if not sad, like having me as a physician sit next to a passenger who passed during a flight from Johannesburg to Atlanta, and pretend she was still alive so as not to freak out the passengers (at the request of the captain). We placed sunglasses and headphones on the decedent, got snacks, tray for me and the dead woman, and I pretended to be engaged in conversation with the dead person when the movies ended…. I even ordered 2 Bloody Mary’s for both of us, (at no cost!) We were the last to deplane… I had to give an extensive report to the police.
Sergio Torloni MD, frustrated ATP. I suck at math and in the early 70’s one had to,have a degree in engineering or aviation to even get an interview… Lots of pilots with lots of hours after the Vietnam war… So I became a doctor!

Not only does having the seat in the upright position give the person behind you more room to escape in an emergency (especially if it's a tall or obese person behind you), but it's also harder for you to get up in a reclined position during an emergency (especially in a compact space with seats on both sides), and much easier for you to inadvertently slide out of your seat on the force of impact when in a reclined position (rather than being restrained by the ninety-degree angle of the back of the seat and seatbelt in the upright position).

Trauma nurse here that works as a flight nurse and sees the worst of the worst. Axial loading (basically same type of injury we see in diving subjects in shallow water) more often than not will result in the force being transferred down your spine causing a cord injury or multiple vertebral burst fractures. A dens fracture or Atlanto-occipital dislocation, which is often caused by the head going forward then being forced back, in the case of not putting the head down is often called an internal decapitation because it essentially just leaves just soft tissue keeping the head attached to the body. Not to mention serious injuries to the trachea that can be caused by hyper extension of the neck. Both can be fatal, however I would take an axial loading incident over an internal decapitation any day!

Close friend's son is in crash investigation (trains not aircraft.) He maintains - and I agree from direct experience - that one of the major causes of accidental death is "Wha...? Wha...?"
In addition to every other notice and warning, he insists that every mode of transport should have notices saying "Wake UP! And pay f**king ATTENTION !"
I was actually involved in a bus crash and fire in Europe many years ago. To be brutally honest, most of my fellow passengers had my footprints across them before they even woke up to the idea that they might be at risk. I was among the first off that bus - having grabbed the first-aid box - and I make no apologies. Couple of us dragged off an unconscious driver and hysterical courier, while a third did his best with the small fire-extinguisher. German services arrived in what seemed an impossibly short time. A few burns, no fatalities.
But even as we were all safely sat around on the roadside grass, some passengers were still "Wha...? Wha...? Wha's going on?"

    • @MoA-Reload...
      @MoA-Reload... 5 месяцев назад

I worked fast craft ferries for years and assisted with training. One of our first officers was also the regions head TO. He had a really good "ice breaker" speech for newbie crews starting training. It was along the lines of "you're not just here to pull pints, serve coffees and sell stuff in the gift shop. That's not even your primary job role. If that was all that was needed from you the company would fill that ship with vending machines and not bother with the expense of cabin crew. Your job is to save lives if/when things go wrong. If you think this job is going to be like Starbucks at sea then maybe you should leave now before wasting our and your own time". By the time we'd get the new starts, they'd already had 2 days of "customer service" training so that was our way to make it clear THIS is what the job actually was and it was time to really pay attention.
He's not wrong either. Training cabin crew even back when I was working there cost thousands but if they didn't pass, they were bounced even after investing that much money into them. As for recurring training, MCA regs for ship crew have certifications for some things and you'd have to recertify to keep the qualification. The ships would have regular drills and a log of crew performance was kept. Any individual crew member that failed in those drills often enough would be thrown shore side until retraining could be arranged or if it was bad enough, lose their job and if it's the ships master giving you the boot, they don't even have to go through the warnings process with HR.
Ships in British waters found in breach of regs can have massive fines brought down on the owner/operator and if it's a big enough breach, they can lose their licences to operate at all and have all their routes shut down.

Sheogorath give us sanity! Kudos to you for sitting through that.
I'd add that the brace position reduces play, in your spine. This, in turn, reduces the effect of jerk on your spine when the change in acceleration maxes out...and that's a lot safer for your spine than flopping forward and snapping your neck when you faceplant the seatback in front of you.
Also, when the hostess says to wear the seatbelt "low and tight" that's really important in the event of an impact because sufficient play in the seatbelt will break your hips and nobody's going to carry you out of the path of a creeping fuel fire if you can't walk - not when everyone's making sure they don't burn to death themselves.
One other thing; water ditching. If you're by an emergency exit, never take your seatbelt off until after the emergency door is open because the only brace you have to get that door open is the seatbelt and the seat. That's it. Pushing against the door only propels you back from the door in the water so you're not getting that door open without your seatbelt fastened. And don't waste your air and stamina on the door before pressure equalisation (inside and out) unless instructed otherwise (e.g. because one of the crew knows the water's not up to the level of the door yet).
Some airlines are dodgy, just like some companies are dodgy, and it shows in the statistics; specifically the number of annual fatalities per capita. Avoid the airlines which get people killed more often and this will improve your flight safety as a passenger. Workplace safety is no different. If you see a lot of lost time incidents, and you plan to keep all your fingers and toes, go work for the competition. Statistically, it's healthier.

Sheogorath. Now, there's a name I haven't heard in a long time. This Breton follows the path of Mara. Yours was a very well thought out post. As an RN of 28 yrs, the only thing I would add, is that keeping the seatbelt low prevents injuries to the internal organs, and keeping the head low prevents contrecoup brain injuries (which occur when the head is propelled forward, then strikes something hard). If they brace, it lowers the risk. I shall follow your advice. I do like to keep all of my limbs intact. It's not easy. Some of my enemies have curves swords. Curved swords.

After a particularly "rough landing" where we were told to "brace" with a very hard landing followed by hard braking, I witnessed the overhead bin pop open with a carry-on bag flying forward and slamming someone in the back of the head of another person who didn't "brace" splitting him open, profusely bleeding. Keep your heads down people. We all walked off, but scary as hell.

That's a good reference and helps me make the right decision in that situation. ;)

It surprises me how folks who are casual observers will tell people to ignore safety advice given by trained staff, I don't bother to challenge them, but try to make sure others realise that H&S advice will normally be best advice!

After. a few close calls, and a background of adventurous sports, i've always been safety first. That actually led to my only crash, when I hired an instructor on a murky day, he got lost, instead of admitting this, ( I could have got us out ) He flew me in to a mountain, the undercarriage was removed by a cliff and we sat on a ledge!

Oh, I just noticed that you have your fourth stripe! Congratulations! Of course I only know you through your channel, but you come across as a very competent and professional pilot. I’m sure you’ll have a long and successful career in aviation.

So sometime between this video and your last video "Plane Crash Stopped by Mechanic", you got promoted to captain from first officer. First of all I want to wish you congratulations. I can't imagine the amount of added responsibility this entails. Secondly, been following you for awhile and really enjoy your content. Keep up the great work! "p.s." Did any flat-earthers ever respond to your video? "Proving The World is Flat!".

Kelsey, one of you best and funniest videos !
If the allegedly Flight Attendant dosen't report the company she used to work for, that just makes her "partners in crime" with her ex employers...

Congrats on the fourth stripe sir! So well deserved, your channel is informative and factual. I started in aviation in 1973 and have seen it all come and go. At last there is someone putting the record straight.... Thanks 🤝

Congratulation, Kelsey, on your promotion. If the content of your RUclips channel is any indication of your dedication to the aviation industry, you certainly earned that promotion. Again, congratulations.

If the content of his RUclips channel is any indication of his dedication to the aviation industry, he has fake log books and cheats on every exam LOL what a clickbait punk LOL

Same exact thing Kelsey with our semi trucks, we decide if it's safe etc...but sometimes simple things like an idiot light or some rubber piece, or maybe a squealing ..well we drive until we reach a shop, Perfectly safe to do so...Just wanted to chime in on your examples here

4 stripes and not a word from you about it! I love your modesty, Captain Kelsey! And you probably thought you could just sneak it in. 😆 Congrats! Love your channel. I'm just learning to be a pilot myself, hope to have my first solo very soon. If you have any words of wisdom for my first solo, I'd appreciate them. Take care!

Congrats Capt Left chair! Seriously, congratulations on your upgrade. I decided to go the private pilot route and considered commercial flying but my career was already set for Bio Medical Engineering. I loved what I do. Now retired but still flying.
