  • Autonomous vehicle technology has gotten better in the last decade, and the hype has gotten bigger. Are we truly close to robots being able to drive us anywhere safely? (Additional footage by Rob Green.)

Really gives a solid perspective to the issues of self driving cars! Didn't realize how much I didn't know

Awesome work as usual!! It should take awhile for self driving cars to be fully reliable but in the meantime we can use the technology as a very good and trustworthy co-pilot

Haven't seen the video yet, but sure hope the answer is yes considering there is a self driving bus operating in the city where I live 😆

I think Trevor Noah made a joke a long time ago that "cars don't drive themselves". Even if the car is on auto-pilot, there is still a person in the driver's seat. If an automatic car causes an accident, that's the fault of the person in the car, for not paying attention.

The pathway to self driving cars gets a lot shorter when it's only driving the last mile for 99% of all use. All the rest of public travel and goods delivery is in some version of public transit system. For example your self-driving vehicle will take you to the place where you enter the multiple use Transit system. In other words this video is not as farsighted as you might think. We don't need self-driving cars for very long if we have a hyperloop based Transit system. We're only looking at the medium distance with self-driving cars.

so it's an issue of what "*self* driving" means. There can be different levels of autonomy and it may just not turn out the same way we imagine it in our head.

I'd imagine perfect self driving would be like auto pilot in airplanes. Still they should NEVER remove the ability to manually control the car, Ethiopian Airlines proves what happens when technology tries to do what it thinks is "right"

Overall, I think people were way to optimistic about how far we’d be in 2020 the last two decades.

This has been my issue all along, random traffic work or a broken light are edge cases still, things humans have no issue with and are far from rare occurrences

To be honest cars should never be 100% self driving. Hell planes which have had autopilot for decades are not entirely self flying and still have manual controls. Also let's not forget the Ethiopian Airlines crash which was caused by automatic technology the pilots couldnt do anything to stop...

It is absurd to say self driving is impossible. Its only a matter of time until the algorithms become developed enough to handle the intricacies needed.
They said man will never fly. Then they said well never get to the moon. One day cars will drive better than humans.

"One day cars will drive better than humans"
That's not a high bar to clear considering the drivers all of us encounter daily.

We can't even teach people to drive.
